Abstract

The invention relates to forming 2,3,5-trimethyl hydroquinone from 2,3,6-trimethylphenol, comprising the following steps: a) oxidizing 2,3,6-trimethylphenol to 2,3,5-trimethylquinone; and b) reducing 2,3,5-trimethylquinone to 2,3,5-trimethylhydroquinone; the steps are carried out in such a way that both reaction steps a) and b) are carried out in a cyclic alkylene carbonate solvent.
