Abstract

This invention relates to the field of composite materials used in medicine, and more particularly in ophthalmology, for the manufacture of optical ophthalmic implants, preferably intraocular lenses (IOLs) intended for vision correction after cataract extraction, and discloses materials for preparing ophthalmic implants by photopolymerization. The materials comprise: a) a urethane di(meth)acrylate oligomer having a (meth)acrylate segment, b) a (meth)acrylate monomer having an aromatic substituent in its side chain, c) a (meth)acrylate monomer having an aliphatic branched substituent in its side chain, d) a UV-absorbing component, such as a polymerizable UV filter material, e) a photopolymerization initiator, and f) a free radical polymerization initiator. This invention provides control over the polymerization rate to eliminate defects in the contours of ophthalmic implants, control dimensional geometry, reduce reflectivity of the finished product while maintaining optimal physical and mechanical properties.
