Abstract
Description
[0001] The present invention relates to a system for administering medical fluid to a patient and a method for administering medical fluid to a patient, according to the preamble of claim 1.
[0002] This type of system includes an infusion station comprising a rack and control unit, the rack defining multiple slots for receiving multiple infusion devices. The control unit is configured to synchronously reference patient data among the infusion devices attached to the multiple slots, the referenced patient data relating to a patient to be administered medical fluid using the infusion station.
[0003] This type of system is typically used at the patient's bedside in healthcare settings such as a hospital's intensive care unit (ICU). Using an infusion station of the type described herein, multiple infusion devices, such as syringe infusion pumps or volumetric (peristaltic) infusion pumps, can be combined to administer one or more medical fluids, such as medications for the patient's treatment or nutritional solutions for enteral or parenteral nutrition, to the patient in a coordinated manner, for example, within an infusion protocol in which infusion operations are performed sequentially or in parallel. Furthermore, using an infusion station allows for the organization and physical holding of the infusion devices to form, for example, a stack of infusion devices at the patient's bedside, resulting in an organized and easily manageable arrangement of the infusion devices. The rack described herein serves as a communication link because it links the infusion devices to each other and to a control unit; therefore, the rack acts as a communication backbone, which can also provide a power supply for electrically feeding the infusion devices connected thereto.
[0004] Typically, a specific infusion station is used to perform infusion procedures on a single patient. It is conceivable, as described herein, that an infusion station contains multiple racks, and that these racks are associated with a single control device for controlling the racks and the infusion devices arranged on them.
[0005] The infusion procedures performed by the infusion device at the infusion station described in this article may depend on certain patient-related data, such as the patient's weight, age, sex, body surface area (BSA), and body mass index (BMI). Based on this patient data, limits and restrictions can be established for the infusion procedure, such as limitations on dose and flow rate. Furthermore, the determination of the dose rate may require consideration of patient data such as the patient's weight.
[0006] For infusion stations, the following expectation exists: patient data should be synchronized across different infusion devices connected to the rack. Specifically, all infusion devices should use the same reference patient data to perform infusion operations, ensuring no mismatch between the patient data and the corresponding infusion settings applied by different infusion devices.
[0007] Synchronization of patient data is usually performed under the control of a control device.
[0008] US2015370973 relates to a method for transmitting operational data to a medical device for administering medication to a patient. This document relates to a set of infusion pumps mounted on a rack. An infusion device can be inserted into the rack, whereby the rack verifies the configuration of the attached infusion device against a reference copy of the configuration of the attached infusion device. If updates to the data mounted on the infusion device are required, the infusion device can input an update sequence with the rack, without providing further details.
[0009] In this paper, the expectation is that synchronization will be easy and comfortable for the user, potentially requiring a limited number of user interactions to achieve the distribution of synchronized patient data among infusion devices connected to the rack at the infusion station. This should be especially true when a new infusion device is connected to the rack, potentially requiring updates to patient data at the infusion station to ensure correct infusion settings for all infusion devices connected to the station.
[0010] The object of the present invention is to provide a system and method for administering medical fluids to a patient, which allows for easy synchronization of patient data, particularly in cases where a new infusion device is connected to the rack of an infusion station.
[0011] This objective is achieved by means of a system including the features of claim 1.
[0012] In this document, the control device is configured to: receive device patient data defined on the new infusion device when attaching a new infusion device to one of a plurality of slots in the rack, and update the reference patient data based on the device patient data according to the infusion status of the new infusion device and the infusion status of the infusion station.
[0013] Therefore, when a new infusion device is attached to one of the slots in the rack, an update of the reference patient data may be performed based on the infusion status of the new infusion device and the infusion status of the infusion station.
[0014] When a new infusion device is connected to the rack of the infusion station, patient data synchronization is performed to ensure that the infusion devices already connected to the rack and the new infusion device now connected to the rack use the same patient data associated with the patients currently being treated through the infusion station. The synchronization described herein is not simply performed by transmitting data from the control unit to the new infusion device, but rather takes into account the infusion status of both the new infusion device and the infusion station, and based on this, potentially updates the reference patient data currently set up at the infusion station according to the device patient data defined on the new infusion device.
[0015] Specifically, based on the infusion status of the new infusion device and the infusion status of the infusion station, the reference patient data of the infusion station may be updated, or—alternatively—reference patient data previously defined at the infusion station may be transferred to the new infusion device for synchronization purposes. Therefore, potentially, if it is determined that the device patient data should have priority, the reference patient data currently stored in the control device of the infusion station is updated with the device patient data. Alternatively, if it is determined that the reference patient data currently stored in the control device of the infusion station should have priority, the device patient data is updated with the reference patient data stored in the control device to synchronize with the infusion station.
[0016] Updates and synchronization can be performed automatically when a new infusion device is attached to the corresponding slot in the rack. In one embodiment, the control device can be configured to recognize a connection event indicating that a new infusion device is to be attached to one of the slots in the rack. For this purpose, a sensor, such as a switch, can be present at the slot to output a detection signal when the infusion device is attached to the slot. Then, following the recognition of the connection event (i.e., directly in response to the recognition of the connection event), the reference patient data can be updated based on the device patient data.
[0017] In one implementation, the new infusion device is configured to transmit patient data of the device to a control device when the new infusion device is attached to one of a plurality of slots in the rack. The transmission of patient data can be performed automatically upon detection of a connection event without user interaction, allowing updates to reference patient data for synchronization purposes to be performed substantially without user interaction. Therefore, synchronization becomes easy and comfortable for the user when the new infusion device is attached to the infusion station.
[0018] In one embodiment, the control device is configured to synchronously update reference patient data among infusion devices attached to the plurality of slots. If, when a new infusion device is attached to the corresponding slot of the rack, the reference patient data, as previously stored at the infusion station, is updated based on the device's patient data, the updated reference patient data is distributed among the other infusion devices connected to the rack. This ensures that all infusion devices connected to the rack receive the same reference patient data and are synchronized using the same reference patient data, thus guaranteeing that the same patient data is used by all infusion devices at the infusion station.
[0019] Updates to reference patient data stored and defined within the control unit of the infusion station are performed based on the infusion status of the new infusion device and the infusion status of the infusion station. In one embodiment, the infusion status of the new infusion device indicates whether the new infusion device is currently performing an infusion operation. Therefore, the infusion status of the new infusion device indicates whether the infusion device was in the process of performing an infusion operation when it was connected to the rack.
[0020] Similarly, the infusion status of the infusion station can indicate whether at least one of the infusion devices attached to the plurality of slots is currently performing an infusion operation. Therefore, if one or more of the infusion devices connected to the rack (excluding new infusion devices) are currently performing an infusion operation, the infusion station is assumed to be in an infusion state.
[0021] Based on the infusion status of the new infusion device and the infusion station, it is determined whether device patient data stored and defined in the new infusion device or reference patient data previously defined in the control device should have priority. Therefore, based on the infusion status of the new infusion device and the infusion station, it is determined whether the reference patient data of the infusion station should be updated according to the device patient data of the new infusion device.
[0022] Updating reference patient data can typically be done by modifying the reference patient data based on the device patient data—for example, by replacing or modifying some values while keeping others unchanged, or by merging reference patient data, such as that stored in a control device, with the device patient data. In a preferred embodiment, if it is determined that the device patient data should be prioritized based on the infusion status of the new infusion device and the infusion status of the infusion station, the reference patient data is set as the device patient data. Therefore, in this case, the reference patient data, such as that previously stored in the control device of the infusion station, is replaced by the device patient data, such that the reference patient data is updated to assume the value of the device patient data.
[0023] By considering the infusion status of the new infusion device and the infusion station for updating reference data, it was considered whether the new infusion device was infusion when it was attached to the rack, and whether the infusion station was infusion when it was attached to the rack.
[0024] For example, the control device can be configured to set reference patient data as device patient data if the infusion status of a new infusion device indicates that the new infusion device is currently performing an infusion operation, and additionally if the infusion status of the infusion station indicates that none of the infusion devices attached to the plurality of slots are performing an infusion operation. Therefore, if the new infusion device is performing an infusion and the infusion station is not performing an infusion when the new infusion device is connected to the rack, it is assumed that the device patient data has a higher priority. In this case, the reference patient data in the control device of the infusion station is set as the device patient data received from the new infusion device, such that the reference patient data is updated according to the device patient data received from the new infusion device. After the reference patient data is updated, the reference patient data can be synchronized among all infusion devices connected to the rack, and for this purpose, the reference patient data can be distributed to all infusion devices so that all infusion devices are set with the same reference patient data.
[0025] Furthermore, the control device can be configured to: if the infusion status of a new infusion device indicates that the new infusion device is not currently performing an infusion operation, or if the infusion status of an infusion station indicates that at least one of the infusion devices attached to the plurality of slots is currently performing an infusion operation, then the reference patient data previously stored in the control device is not updated. If the new infusion device is not currently performing an infusion, it is always assumed that the reference patient data previously stored in the control device should have priority. Additionally, if it is detected that an infusion station is performing an infusion, i.e., one or more of the infusion devices connected to the rack (excluding the new infusion device) are currently performing an infusion operation, it is assumed that the reference patient data stored in the control device should have priority, regardless of the infusion status of the new infusion device. Therefore, if it is assumed that the reference patient data previously stored in the control device has a higher priority than the device patient data stored in the new infusion device, then the reference patient data of the infusion station is not updated, and thus the reference patient data of the infusion station remains unchanged at its previously stored value.
[0026] If the reference patient data is not updated, it is transmitted to the new infusion device, so that the new infusion device receives the reference patient data previously stored in the control device of the infusion station and is thus synchronized with the infusion station.
[0027] When a new infusion device is attached to an infusion station and is currently performing an infusion operation, a conflict may arise between the settings of the new infusion device used for the current infusion operation and the settings of the newly received reference patient data, such as those previously stored in the control unit of the infusion station, when the reference patient data is transmitted to the new infusion device for synchronization purposes. In this case, a conflict resolution workflow can be initiated, during which one or more parameters of the infusion operation can be adjusted to overcome the conflict with the reference patient data. For example, the user, such as a physician or nurse, can be consulted to confirm adjustments to the flow rate, or to adjust the dose rate while continuing at the same flow rate, for example, based on the newly received reference patient data.
[0028] This objective is also achieved by means of a method for administering medical fluid to a patient, the method comprising: providing an infusion station including a rack and a control device, the rack defining a plurality of slots, wherein the control device is configured to synchronously reference patient data among infusion devices attached to the plurality of slots, the reference patient data relating to a patient to whom medical fluid is to be administered using the infusion station; and attaching a new infusion device to one of the plurality of slots of the rack. In this document, when a new infusion device is attached to one of the plurality of slots of the rack, the control device receives device-patient data defined on the new infusion device, and updates the reference patient data based on the device-patient data according to the infusion status of the new infusion device and the infusion status of the infusion station.
[0029] The advantages and beneficial implementation methods described above for the system also apply to this method, so that this method should refer to the above.
[0030] The underlying concept of the invention will then be described in more detail with reference to the embodiments shown in the accompanying drawings.

[0035] Figure 4 An interactive diagram is shown for communication between the infusion device and the control device of the infusion station during the infusion operation programmed by the user when the infusion station is not performing infusion.
[0036] Figure 5An interactive diagram is shown for communication between the infusion device and the control device of the infusion station during user-programmed infusion operations, after infusion has already commenced at the infusion station; and
[0037] Figure 6 A flowchart is shown for synchronizing patient data between the infusion device and the control device of the infusion station when the infusion device is attached to the infusion station.
[0038] Figure 1 A schematic diagram is shown of an infusion station 1 at the bedside of patient P, for example in a healthcare setting such as a hospital intensive care unit (ICU).
[0039] As given Figure 2 of Figure 1 As can be seen, the infusion station 1 includes a frame 10 defining a plurality of slots 100 to which a plurality of infusion devices 2 can be attached. The frame 10 provides mechanical and electrical connections for the infusion devices 2 at the slots 100, and serves as a communication link and power supply, such that the infusion devices 2 connected to the frame 10 are interconnected with each other and are also connected to the power supply via the frame 10.
[0040] The rack 10 includes a control device 11, such as Figure 3 As schematically shown, the control device 11 includes a memory device 110 and a processing device 111, and therefore includes an electronic circuitry system for controlling the operation of the infusion station 1. The control device 11 specifically provides a connection to the hospital information system 4, enabling data to be transmitted to and received from the hospital information system 4 via the control device 11.
[0041] Specifically, control device 11 can be configured to send infusion data generated by infusion operation performed by infusion device 2 of infusion station 1 to hospital information system 4. Alternatively or additionally, control device 11 can be configured to receive configuration data, such as drug library data, from hospital information system 4.
[0042] In addition, the nurse call system and reading devices such as barcode readers can be connected to the control device 11.
[0043] Alternatively or otherwise, the control device 11 may be configured to control the operation of the infusion device 2 connected to the rack 10, for example, to perform the infusion operation in a coordinated manner, such as within a medical protocol for multi-channel infusion.
[0044] As from Figure 1 As can be seen, the rack 10, together with the control device 11 and the infusion devices 2 arranged on the rack 10, is connected to the support 3 placed beside the patient P's bed. The rack 10 holds the infusion devices 2 connected to it in an organized manner, forming a vertical stack of the infusion devices 2.
[0045] Infusion station 1 also includes interface device 12, which is also referred to as treatment manager, such as Figure 3 As indicated, interface device 12 is functionally connected to control device 11 and includes input device 120 and display 121. Interface device 12 is configured to output information about infusion operations performed by infusion device 2 of infusion station 1. Additionally, a user can input information, for example, for programming the infusion operations of infusion station 1, into input device 120.
[0046] As from Figure 2 Therefore, the infusion device 2 can be configured as an injection pump or a volumetric (peristaltic) infusion pump. In either case, the infusion device 2 may include: a housing 20; an input device 21, such as a knob and / or keypad, for inputting data into the corresponding infusion device 2 to, for example, program the infusion operation; and a display 22 for outputting information, such as information related to the infusion operation in progress.
[0047] Refer again Figure 3 Each infusion device 2 may include a memory device 23 for storing information and a processing device 24 for controlling the operation of the infusion device 2.
[0048] The infusion device 2, arranged on the rack 10 of the infusion station 1, can be configured to perform infusions on patients P assigned to infusion stations 1 individually or together in multi-channel operations. In this document, each infusion station 1 is typically assigned to a single patient P, and therefore the infusion device 2 is dedicated to patient P to perform infusion operations on patient P.
[0049] When setting up an infusion operation on infusion device 2, patient data such as the patient's age, weight, sex, body surface area, and body mass index are typically considered to limit certain settings of the infusion operation. For example, within a drug library, various different drugs can be associated with various different limitations, such as those related to flow rate, dose, and dose rate, which may depend on patient data, such as the patient's age or weight. Furthermore, while flow rate is generally defined as the volume of fluid administered to the patient per time (e.g., expressed in ml / h), dose rate (also expressed as infusion rate) takes pharmacokinetics into account, and dose rate refers to the rate at which a drug should be administered to achieve a steady state of a specific dose within, for example, the patient's plasma compartment. The dose rate in this document is typically calculated by taking into account patient data, particularly the patient's weight.
[0050] Since the infusion station 1, which has an infusion device 2 connected to the rack 10, is assigned to a single patient, all infusion devices 2 of the infusion station 1 should use the same patient data. Therefore, the task of the control device 11 is to ensure that this patient data, i.e., all data related to the patient assigned to the infusion station 1, is synchronized between the different infusion devices 2 attached to the rack 10 and the control device 11.
[0051] Now refer to Figure 4 If a user U, such as a doctor or nurse, wishes to program an infusion operation on a specific infusion device 2A (step A1), the infusion device 2A sends a message to the control device 11 to inquire whether patient confirmation is required (step A2). The control device 11 responds to the request of the infusion device 2A by sending a response message to the infusion device 2A indicating whether patient confirmation is required or not; the response message is true in the current case (step A3). The infusion device 2A then instructs the user U to confirm the patient data currently defined on the infusion station 1, or to define a new patient by entering new patient data (step A4).
[0052] If user U confirms that the patient data is as previously defined at infusion station 1, then the infusion operation is programmed based on the previously defined reference patient data stored in control device 11 (step A5).
[0053] In the alternative scenario, if user U decides to create a new patient (step A6), user U inputs the new patient data into infusion device 2A, which then forwards the new patient data to control device 11 (step A7). In control device 11, the previously stored reference patient data is replaced by the patient data received from infusion device 2A. Control device 11 then distributes the new reference patient data to all infusion devices 2, 2A connected to rack 10 and thus part of infusion station 1 (steps A8, A9). Therefore, the newly defined patient data input by user U in step A6 is transmitted to control device 11, which distributes the patient data as new reference patient data to all infusion devices 2, 2A connected to rack 10.
[0054] In one implementation, new patient data can be entered on the infusion device 2A, on which the user U will program the infusion operation, if and only if the infusion station 1 is not currently infusing—that is, if none of the infusion devices 2 connected to the rack 10 is currently infusing except for the currently programmed infusion device 2A—that is, when no infusion operation is currently being performed on the infusion station 1.
[0055] In contrast, when an infusion operation is performed by one or more of the infusion devices 2 at infusion station 1, new patients are not allowed to be entered and the current reference patient data is not allowed to be replaced. Now refer to Figure 5 If user U initiates programming of infusion device 2A under these circumstances (step B1), infusion device 2A sends a message to control device 11 to inquire whether patient confirmation is required (step B2). In this case, control device 11 responds by indicating that patient confirmation is not required, and therefore the response message has the value "false" (step B3). Therefore, user U is not allowed to input a new patient, but programming of infusion operations on infusion device 2A can continue based on previously defined reference patient data.
[0056] Now refer to Figure 6 When attaching infusion device 2A to slot 100 of rack 10 of infusion station 1, patient data synchronization must be performed between infusion station 1 and the newly attached infusion device 2A. This is because the patient data defined on infusion device 2A may differ from the reference patient data defined in control device 11 and the previously attached infusion device 2 of infusion station 1. The synchronization described herein occurs substantially immediately after infusion device 2A is attached to infusion station 1 and should involve a minimal number of user interactions to achieve a simple, fast, and comfortable synchronization process.
[0057] Figure 6 A flowchart is shown for the process of synchronizing patient data involving the newly attached infusion device 2A and control device 11 at infusion station 1.
[0058] If the infusion device 2A is newly attached to the slot 100 of the frame 10 of the infusion station 1 ( Figure 6 If, in step C1), a connection event is identified at control device 11 (step C2), causing control device 11 to recognize that infusion device 2A has been connected to rack 10. Following the connection event in step C2, control device 11 checks whether infusion station 1 is currently infusing (step C3). To do this, control device 11 checks whether one or more of the infusion devices 2 previously connected to rack 10 are currently performing an infusion operation.
[0059] If the infusion status of infusion station 1 indicates that infusion station 1 is not currently performing an infusion, then in step C4, control device 11 receives device patient data from infusion device 2A. In step C5, it is checked whether infusion device 2A is currently performing an infusion operation. If this is the case, it is assumed that the device patient data should have a higher priority than the previously stored reference patient data as defined in control device 11, such that the device patient data replaces the reference patient data previously stored in control device 11 and thus becomes the new reference patient data (step C6).
[0060] If in step C3 it is found that infusion station 1 is in an infusion state, that is, one or more infusion devices 2 that were previously connected to rack 10 are performing an infusion operation, then it is assumed that the reference patient data previously stored in control device 11 should have a higher priority than the device patient data that may be stored on the newly attached infusion device 2A, thereby retaining the reference patient data previously stored in control device 11 (step C7).
[0061] In step C8, existing reference patient data, which may correspond to the updated reference patient data in step C6 or the previous reference patient data in step C7, is synchronized to all infusion devices 2, 2A connected to rack 10 of infusion station 1, such that all infusion devices 2, 2A receive the now-valid reference patient data (step C9). This also includes newly attached infusion devices 2A, ensuring that all infusion devices 2, 2A are synchronized with the same reference patient data under any circumstances.
[0062] The process then ends in step C10.
[0063] When a new infusion device 2A is attached to infusion station 1, a synchronization process is performed to synchronize patient data among all infusion devices 2, 2A connected to infusion station 1. In this document, the infusion status of the new infusion device 2A and the infusion status of infusion station 1, including all previously connected infusion devices 2, are taken into consideration to determine whether device patient data stored on the new infusion device 2A or reference patient data previously defined in control device 11 should be given priority. In any case, at the end of the synchronization process, all infusion devices 2, 2A are equipped with the same reference patient data, and therefore the same reference patient data is used, for example, to define the infusion operation.
[0064] exist Figure 6 In the flowchart, if infusion station 1 is in an infusion state, that is, one or more infusion devices 2 previously connected to infusion station 1 are currently infusion, the reference patient data as previously defined in control device 11 is always given priority. If infusion station 1 is in an infusion state, the reference patient data as previously defined is maintained, regardless of whether a new infusion device 2A is infusion.
[0065] In this scenario, if a new infusion device 2A is in operation, reference patient data as previously defined in control device 11 is transmitted to the new infusion device 2A, resulting in an update of the patient data as defined in infusion device 2A. This may cause a conflict with the ongoing infusion operation on infusion device 2A, after which a conflict workflow can be executed on infusion device 2A. During the conflict workflow, user U may be requested to confirm adjustments to infusion operation parameters, such as an adjusted flow rate or an adjusted dose rate.
[0066] The concept implied in this invention is not limited to the above-described embodiments, but can be implemented in different ways.
[0067] Reference patient data can be related to a specific patient currently being treated by the infusion station. However, reference patient data can also refer to a general default patient, assuming some average standard values for that patient, such as the patient's weight.
[0068] It is conceivable that an infusion station contains multiple racks, and these racks are associated with a single control unit for controlling the racks and the infusion devices arranged on them. The synchronization of patient data described herein can be achieved through a single control unit associated with multiple racks, affecting all infusion devices arranged on the racks.
