Abstract
Description
Technical Field
[0001] This invention relates to the field of furniture. More particularly, this invention relates to a table having a folding tabletop, foldable legs, and a planar cross brace for supporting the central area of the tabletop. Background Technology
[0002] Banquet tables and utility tables with foldable legs and bi-fold tabletops are well-known. Traditionally, a bi-fold tabletop comprises two tabletop halves formed from plastic by blow molding or injection molding, or from honeycomb panels, medium-density fiberboard (MDF), or other materials. When the table is unfolded to a usable position where the tabletop halves are aligned, the inner edges of the tabletop halves converge at the center of the tabletop. In some designs, such as those described in U.S. Patent No. 7,096,799 and... Figure 11 As described, the inner edges of the desktop half have interlocking and overlapping features, which are integrally formed into the molded desktop half. When the desktop half is aligned in the use position, the interlocking features 234 and overlapping features 236 of the two halves will interconnect to form a more rigid desktop.
[0003] While a rigid tabletop is desirable, incorporating fully interlocking and overlapping features within the tabletop half introduces further complexity and cost to the mold in which the tabletop half is formed. Furthermore, because these features are located at or near the mold parting line where the two mold halves converge, removing any plastic burrs at the mold parting line becomes more difficult. Burrs are easier to remove if the mold parting line coincides with a straight edge surface from which the features do not protrude. Therefore, eliminating the interlocking features would make the manufacturing process more efficient.
[0004] Therefore, what is needed is a folding desktop that is sufficiently rigid and has a flat surface along the inner edge of the desktop half, without molded interlocking features. Summary of the Invention
[0005] The aforementioned and other requirements are met by a foldable table having a tabletop, side rails, leg assemblies, hinge assemblies, a central support bracket, tubular cross brackets, and planar cross brackets. The second ends of the central support brackets 40a and 40b are pivotally connected to a tubular cross bracket 38, which spans the width of the second tabletop portion 12b.
[0027] Using screws or other fasteners, the first side rails 30a, 32a and the second side rails 30b, 32b are preferably attached to the first desktop portion 12a and the second desktop portion 12b, respectively. The first side rail 30a is pivotally connected to the second side rail 30b via a hinge assembly 36. Figure 6As shown, hinge assembly 36 includes a first hinge portion 36a and a second hinge portion 36b, the first hinge portion 36a being fixed to a first side rail 30a, and the second hinge portion 36b being fixed to a second side rail 30b. Similarly, the first side rail 32a is pivotally connected to the second side rail 32b via hinge assembly 34. Hinge assembly 34 includes a first hinge portion 34a and a second hinge portion 34b, the first hinge portion 34a being fixed to the first side rail 32a, and the second hinge portion 34b being fixed to the second side rail 32b. When leg assemblies 14 and 16 are retracted to... Figure 3 , Figure 9 and Figure 10 When in the storage position shown, hinge assemblies 34 and 36 allow desktop portion 12a to pivot relative to desktop portion 12b along hinge axis 44.
[0028] The tubular cross bracket 38 is centered on the hinge axis 44 formed by the hinge assemblies 34-36, with one end attached to the hinge assembly 34 and the other end attached to the hinge assembly 36. In a preferred embodiment, the cross bracket 38 is a cylindrical tube with a circular cross-section. In some embodiments, these ends of the tubular cross bracket 38 are attached to the hinge assemblies 34 and 36 by welded joints. The tubular cross bracket 38 preferably includes holes through which fasteners pass to attach the tubular cross bracket 38 to a molded support 50 extending from the bottom surface of the second desktop portion 12b.
[0029] like Figure 3 , Figure 5 , Figure 6 and Figure 7 As shown, an elongated planar cross bracket 39 is attached to the bottom surface of the first desktop portion 12a to provide lateral support. The bracket 39 reinforces the inner edge 42a of the first desktop portion 12a independently of any connection to the inner edge 42b of the second desktop portion 12b. This eliminates the need for any interlocking features, such as those required in existing technical tables. Figure 11 ).
[0030] like Figure 8A and Figure 8B As shown, a preferred embodiment of the cross brace 39 includes a rectangular planar portion 60, each end of which has a tab 54 perpendicular to the planar portion 60. To enhance its rigidity, the central region of the brace 39 includes ribs 56 along its outer edge, also perpendicular to the rectangular planar portion 60. Multiple pairs of arcuate cutouts 52 are provided in the ribs 56 and located near the tabs 54 at each end of the cross brace 39. Figure 3 and Figure 7As shown, the cutout 52 accommodates the lower ends of the legs 24a-24b, thereby allowing the legs 24a-24b to lie flat against the bottom surface of the tabletop portion 12a when the leg assembly 16 is in the folded position.
[0031] like Figure 8B As shown, rib 56 and planar portion 60 form a channel 64 with a U-shaped cross-section, which provides greater rigidity to the cross bracket 39. Pairs of holes 58 are provided through which fasteners can pass to secure the bracket 39 to the bottom surface of the first tabletop portion 12a. The bracket 39 is preferably formed from a single piece of steel, wherein the tabs 54 and ribs 56 are integrally formed by bending.
[0032] like Figures 8C to 8D As shown, the bracket 39 has a width W and a length L1. Its central region has a length L2. The tab 54 has a height H1 and the rib has a height H2. All components of the bracket 39 preferably have the same thickness T. The holes 58 are spaced apart by a distance D and each has a radius R. In a preferred embodiment, W is 20 mm, L1 is 683.4 mm, L2 is 495 mm, H1 is 18 mm, H2 is 10 mm, D is 220 mm, T is 2.3 mm, and R is 6.5 mm. In another preferred embodiment, W is 20 mm, L1 is 643.5 mm, L2 is 483.5 mm, H1 is 18 mm, H2 is 10 mm, D is 250 mm, T is 2.3 mm, and R is 6.5 mm.
[0033] The tab 54 is secured to the first hinge portion 34a at one end of the bracket 39, and the tab 54 is secured to the first hinge portion 36a at the other end of the bracket 39. In a preferred embodiment, the tab 54 is attached to the hinge portions 34a-36a by welding. In another embodiment, attachment is performed using fasteners such as screws or rivets.
[0034] In a preferred embodiment, the desktop portion is formed of blow-molded plastic, while the side rails, leg assembly, central support bracket, tubular cross bracket, planar cross bracket, and hinge assembly are formed of steel. In another embodiment, the metal components may be formed of other materials, such as aluminum extrusions, and components formed of other materials may have a greater thickness compared to components formed of steel.
[0035] Using a planar cross brace with a U-shaped channel to reinforce the inner edge of the desktop portion 12a has several advantages over using a tubular cross brace, including: —Tests have shown that U-shaped steel channels are more robust than tubular steel supports; —U-shaped steel channels are less expensive than tubular steel supports; —U-shaped steel channels are lighter than tubular steel supports; —Because U-shaped steel channels are more robust than tubular steel supports, less plastic material is needed to form the tabletop, resulting in lower costs; and Attaching a flat support to the bottom surface of a desktop is less complicated than attaching a tubular support.
[0036] The foregoing description of preferred embodiments of the invention has been presented for purposes of illustration and description. These descriptions are not intended to be exhaustive or to limit the invention to the precise forms disclosed. Based on the foregoing teachings, obvious modifications or variations are possible. The embodiments have been chosen and described to provide the best illustration of the principles of the invention and its practical application, and to enable those skilled in the art to utilize the invention in various embodiments and to utilize various modifications suitable for the particular purpose contemplated. All such modifications and variations fall within the scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims when interpreted according to the breadth to which they are fairly, legally, and justly enjoyed.
