Abstract
Description
[0001] Cross-referencing related applications
[0002] not applicable. Technical Field
[0003] This disclosure relates to a cap having one or more pressure relief features, and more specifically, to a cap for a pressurized vessel including one or more pressure relief features. Background Technology
[0004] Various types of containers or canisters are used to hold or contain contents that can be initially pressurized or pressurized over time. For example, an aerosol canister can be pressurized with an aerosol and can maintain this initial pressurization until the user releases the aerosol, thereby reducing the pressure within the canister. In some cases, containers can be pressurized and can maintain the initial pressurization level throughout the entire lifespan of the container contents. In other cases, the container can be pressurized over time due to one or more factors that cause the container to be pressurized, such as a chemical reaction occurring within the container.
[0005] In any of the pressurization scenarios described above, one or more features may be built into or disposed along one or more portions of the container, allowing for venting of the container when necessary. In cases where the pressure inside the container increases after it has been initially sealed, venting features may be included to prevent over-pressurization of the container, which could lead to uncontrolled release of the contents.
[0006] While various venting features exist for venting or depressurizing containers containing contents that have been pressurized over time, there is a need for improved apparatus and methods that allow for more controlled depressurization based on predetermined factors associated with the contents of a particular container. Summary of the Invention
[0007] The embodiments of this disclosure generally relate to a cap for a pressurized container, the cap comprising a plate having a top surface and a bottom surface, a first slot extending along the top surface about a first axis, and a second slot extending along the bottom surface about the first axis. The first slot and the second slot form a membrane that is capable of rupturing when maximum pressure causes the membrane to rupture.
[0008] In another aspect, the cap for the pressurized container includes a plate having a top surface and a bottom surface, and a first notch extending along the top surface about a first axis. The first notch defines an inner surface, an outer surface, and a bottom surface. The inner surface defines a first plane tangent to a first point along the inner surface, and the outer surface defines a second plane tangent to a second point along the outer surface. The line between the first and second points is orthogonal to the first axis. The first and second planes intersect to define a first angle between 61,000 degrees and 180,000 degrees.
[0009] In another aspect, the cap for the pressurized container includes a plate defining a top surface, a bottom surface, and a first diameter spanning the top surface. The plate further includes: a first notch extending about a first axis along the top surface, defining a second diameter; and a second notch extending about the first axis along the bottom surface. The ratio of the second diameter to the first diameter is between 0.700 and approximately 0.990.
[0010] Other aspects of the cap described herein, including its features and advantages, will become apparent to those skilled in the art upon careful reading of the accompanying drawings and detailed description. Therefore, all these aspects of the cap are intended to be included within the specific embodiments and the content of this invention. Attached Figure Description

[0021] Before explaining the embodiments of this disclosure in detail, it should be understood that the application of this disclosure is not limited to the details of the structure and arrangement of the components set forth in the following description or shown in the accompanying drawings. Other embodiments of this disclosure are possible and it can be implemented or performed in various ways. Furthermore, it should be understood that the phrases and terms used herein are for descriptive purposes only and should not be considered limiting. The use of “comprising” and “including” and variations thereof means including items listed below and their equivalents, as well as additional items and their equivalents. Throughout this disclosure, the terms “approximately” and “about” refer to plus or minus 5% of the number preceding each item.
[0022] Embodiments of this disclosure provide a cap, plate, or lid that can be coupled to a can or container, the cap having one or more pressure relief or venting features that allow pressure relief within the can or container if pressure reduction is required. The venting features described herein may be formed along two opposing faces of the cap and may be disposed along different portions of the cap. The venting features of this disclosure can be implemented in various techniques, including applications related to aerosol containers, battery cell containers, capacitors, and pressure vessels. In each of these applications, pressure may need to be released due to pressure buildup within the container, and the venting features disclosed herein can allow pressure reduction after a maximum pressure threshold has been reached. While additional pressure relief features can be combined with any device considered herein, and a cap with pressure relief features can be coupled to such a device, the pressure relief features disclosed herein can also be used independently as standalone pressure relief features.
[0023] Figure 1-7 A plate, cover, or cap 20 according to this disclosure is shown. See details. Figure 1 and Figure 2The figures depict isometric views of the top and bottom of the cap 20, highlighting a first pressure-relieving feature 22 along the top surface 24 of the cap 20 and a second pressure-relieving feature 26 along the bottom surface 28 of the cap 20. Although the cap 20 is described and shown in the figures as having top and bottom surfaces 24, 28, it should be understood that the cap 20 can be configured with either its top surface 24 or bottom surface 28 facing upwards or downwards, and is not limited to the orientation depicted in the figures. The cap 20 disclosed herein is adaptable for attachment to a jar or container 32 (see figure 32) by any conventional means. Figure 7 The container 32 may be attached to the side wall 30 of the cap 20 by means of, for example, crimping, welding, double-seam connection or other conventional attachment methods. The container 32 may include or contain materials that are pressurized before, during or after the cap 20 is attached to the container 32.
[0024] As will be described below, the combination of the first and second pressure relief features 22, 26 along the cap 20 allows for controlled and targeted pressure release when a maximum pressure threshold is reached. Viewed in cross-section, referencing... Figure 4-6 The first pressure-relieving feature 22 is a first notch defining a generally trapezoidal profile with curved or flared edges, and the second pressure-relieving feature 26 is a second notch defining a generally trapezoidal profile with curved or flared edges. For ease of reference, the first pressure-relieving feature 22 will be referred to as the first notch 22, and the second pressure-relieving feature 26 will be referred to as the second notch 26. In this disclosure, the term "notch" refers to a pressure-relieving feature that is an embedded area cut or machined from the cap 20. Although not specifically shown in the figures, in some embodiments, the second notch 26 may be provided along the top surface 24 and the bottom surface 28, or the first notch 22 may be provided along the top surface 24 and the bottom surface 28. The first and second pressure-relieving features 22, 26 may be cuts defining one or more planes or planar surfaces. Alternatively, the first and second pressure-relieving features 22, 26 may be cuts defining only curved surfaces.
[0025] Reference Figure 1 The cap 20 is typically disc-shaped and defines an outer wall 36, which includes an outer edge 38 defining the periphery of the cap 20. The outer wall 36 intersects with an intermediate wall 40, which extends upward and inward from the outer wall 36 and intersects with a bottom wall 42. The first slot 22 and the second slot 26 are respectively provided along the bottom wall 42 (see...). Figure 2The walls 36, 40, and 42 each define the top surface 24 and the bottom surface 28. The top surface 24 of the walls 36, 40, and 42 is generally continuous but interrupted by the first notch 22. The bottom surface 28 of the walls 36, 40, and 42 is also generally continuous and interrupted by the second notch 26. The outer wall 36 connects to the intermediate wall 40 at the first corner 44, and the intermediate wall 40 connects to the bottom wall 42 at the second corner 46. Each corner 44, 46 is generally circular and defines a portion of the top surface 24 and the bottom surface 28 of the cover 20.
[0026] like Figure 1 and Figure 2 As shown, the first slot 22 and the second slot 26 can extend 360.000 degrees around a first axis or longitudinal axis A1. The first axis A1 extends through the cover 20 and is orthogonal to the bottom wall 42. In some embodiments, the first slot 22 and the second slot 26 can extend only a portion of the first axis A1. In some embodiments, the first slot 22 and the second slot 26 may extend about the first axis A1 between about 10.000 degrees and about 350.000 degrees, or about 20.000 degrees and about 340.000 degrees, or about 30.000 degrees and about 330.000 degrees, or about 40.000 degrees and about 320.000 degrees, or about 50.000 degrees and about 310.000 degrees, or about 60.000 degrees and about 300.000 degrees, or about 70.000 degrees and about 290.000 degrees, or about 80.000 degrees and about 280.000 degrees, or about the first axis A1. Line A1 extends between about 90,000 degrees and about 270,000 degrees, or extends around the first axis A1 between about 100,000 degrees and about 260,000 degrees, or extends around the first axis A1 between about 110,000 degrees and about 250,000 degrees, or extends around the first axis A1 between about 120,000 degrees and about 240,000 degrees, or extends around the first axis A1 between about 130,000 degrees and about 270,000 degrees. It extends between approximately 230,000 degrees, or extends between approximately 140,000 degrees and approximately 220,000 degrees around the first axis A1, or extends between approximately 150,000 degrees and approximately 210,000 degrees around the first axis A1, or extends between approximately 160,000 degrees and approximately 200,000 degrees around the first axis A1, or extends between approximately 170,000 degrees and approximately 190,000 degrees around the first axis A1.
[0027] In some embodiments, the first slot 22 and the second slot 26 may extend about the first axis A1 between 139.000 degrees and 360.000 degrees, or about 145.000 degrees and about 355.000 degrees, or about 150.000 degrees and about 350.000 degrees, or about 155.000 degrees and about 350.000 degrees, or about 155.000 degrees and about 350.000 degrees, around the first axis A1. Extending between 45,000 degrees, or extending around the first axis A1 between approximately 160,000 degrees and approximately 340,000 degrees, or extending around the first axis A1 between approximately 165,000 degrees and approximately 335,000 degrees, or extending around the first axis A1 between approximately 170,000 degrees and approximately 330,000 degrees, or extending around the first axis A1 between approximately 175,000 degrees and approximately 325,000 degrees, or extending around the... The first axis A1 extends between about 180.000 degrees and about 320.000 degrees, or extends about the first axis A1 between about 185.000 degrees and about 315.000 degrees, or extends about the first axis A1 between about 190.000 degrees and about 310.000 degrees, or extends about the first axis A1 between about 195.000 degrees and about 305.000 degrees, or extends about the first axis A1 between about 200.000 degrees. [0028] In some embodiments, the first slot 22 and the second slot 26 may extend about 10.000 degrees, or about 20.000 degrees, or about 30.000 degrees, or about 40.000 degrees, or about 50.000 degrees, or about 60.000 degrees, or about 70.000 degrees, or about 80.000 degrees, or about 90.000 degrees, or about 100.000 degrees, or about 110.000 degrees, or about 120.000 degrees, or about 130.000 degrees, or about 140.000 degrees, or about 150.000 degrees, or about 160.000 degrees, or about 170.000 degrees, about 10.000 degrees, about 140.000 degrees, or about 150.000 degrees, or about 160.000 degrees, about 170.000 degrees, about 1 ... 00 degrees, or approximately 180.000 degrees, or approximately 190.000 degrees, or approximately 200.000 degrees, or approximately 210.000 degrees, or approximately 220.000 degrees, or approximately 230.000 degrees, or approximately 240.000 degrees, or approximately 250.000 degrees, or approximately 260.000 degrees, or approximately 270.000 degrees, or approximately 280.000 degrees, or approximately 290.000 degrees, or approximately 300.000 degrees, or approximately 310.000 degrees, or approximately 320.000 degrees, or approximately 330.000 degrees, or approximately 340.000 degrees, or approximately 350.000 degrees, or approximately 360.000 degrees.
[0029] The degree by which the first notch 22 and the second notch 26 extend about the first axis A1 can affect the performance and accuracy of the cap 20. For example, extending the first notch 22 and the second notch 26 by 170.000 degrees about the first axis A1 can provide the cap 20 with higher accuracy in breaking under specific or maximum pressure within the container 32 (see [link to product description]). Figure 6 This also provides better venting of material passing through the cover 20.
[0030] Reference Figure 1 and Figure 2 The second slot 26 and the first slot 22 are shown positioned along the bottom wall 42 inside the second corner 46. The second slot 26 and the first slot 22 may be spaced apart at any point within the second corner 46 along the bottom wall 42. In some embodiments, the cover 20 may include a single plane or a curved wall, and the first slot 22 and the second slot 26 may be positioned in a similar manner around the first axis A1 extending through its center point. In some embodiments, one or more of the corners 44, 46 may be removed, or one or more of the walls 36, 40, 42 may be removed. Alternatively, in some embodiments, one or more corners (not shown) or one or more walls (not shown) may be added. Furthermore, in some embodiments, the second slot 26 and the first slot 22 may be positioned along the cover 20 in another location without needing to be centered around an axis.
[0031] Still refer to Figure 1 and Figure 2 This shows the outer edge 38 extending around the periphery of the cap 20. In some embodiments, the outer wall 36 may be adapted to be crimped or otherwise coupled to the container 32 (see [link to documentation]). Figure 7 As described above, the cap 20 can be fastened to the container 32 using one or more fastening means, such as crimping, welding, or double-seam connection. For this purpose, the outer wall 36 of the cap 20 can be manipulated, molded, or otherwise attached to another element to secure material (not shown) within the container 32, thereby subjecting the material to pressure before, during, or after the cap 20 is secured to the container 32.
[0032] Figure 3 yes Figure 1 The top plan view of the cover shows the slot 22 in more detail. A second axis A2 and a third axis A3 intersect at the center point 52 of the cover 20 to divide the cover 20 into a first quadrant 54, a second quadrant 56, a third quadrant 58, and a fourth quadrant 60. In some embodiments, the first slot 22 may only span the first quadrant 54, or only span the first and second quadrants 54, 56, or only span the first, second, and third quadrants 54, 56, 58. In some embodiments, the first slot 22 may be closer to the center point 52 in the first quadrant 54 than in the second quadrant 56. In some embodiments, the first slot 22 may be closer to the center point 52 in the third quadrant 58 than in the first quadrant 54. In some embodiments, a third slot (not shown) may be located between the first slot 22 and the center point 52 in any of the quadrants 54, 56, 58, and 60.
[0033] As will be shown below relative to the cross-sectional view (see...) Figure 4-6 As discussed herein, according to this disclosure, the second slot 26 is aligned with and directly opposite the first slot 22. Therefore, the above description of the positions of the slot 22 and the four quadrants 54, 56, 58, 60 applies similarly to the second slot 26. Although the cover 20 of the present invention is circular, it is conceivable that the cover 20 may take other forms, such as elliptical, square, rectangular, or polygonal shapes. For this purpose, the cover 20 may be divided into other regions (not shown) of substantially the same area, in a manner similar to quadrants 54, 56, 58, 60 described herein, and the second slot 26 (see...) Figure 2 The first slot 22 and the first slot 22 can be changed in these areas in a manner similar to that described above with respect to quadrants 54, 56, 58, and 60.
[0034] Still refer to Figure 3 The cap 20 defines a first diameter D1. Furthermore, the first notch 22 defines a second diameter D2, which extends through the center point of the cap 20. The first diameter D1 and the second diameter D2 may be defined as a D2 / D1 ratio between about 0.500 and about 0.990, or between about 0.550 and about 0.990, or between about 0.600 and about 0.990, or between about 0.650 and about 0.990, or between about 0.700 and about 0.990, or between about 0.750 and about 0.990, or between about 0.800 and about 0.990, or between about 0.850 and about 0.990, or between about 0.900 and about 0.990, or between about 0.950 and about 0.990. The D2 / D1 ratio can be selected between about 0.500 and about 0.990, or between about 0.600 and about 0.800, or around about 0.750. The ratio of the second diameter to the first diameter may affect the performance and accuracy of the cap 20. For example, a D2 / D1 ratio of about 0.750 may provide the cap 20 with better accuracy in breaking under specific or maximum pressure within the container 32 (see...). Figure 7 ).
[0035] Now for reference Figure 4 It shows along Figure 3 The cross-sectional side view is obtained by section line 4-4. The top surface 24 and bottom surface 28 of the cap 20 shown in the figure are positioned above and below the various walls 36, 40, 42 defining the cap 20. The second notch 26 and the first notch 22 are depicted along opposite sides of the cap 20, and a membrane or fracture wall 62 is shown positioned between the first notch 22 and the second notch 26. As mentioned above, additional notches may be provided along the cap 20 at different locations along one or more of the walls 36, 40, 42; however, for the purposes of this disclosure, only the second notch 26 and the first notch 22 will be discussed. The first notch 22 is positioned directly above the second notch 26, such that the line drawn through the first notch 22 and the second notch 26, or the fourth axis A4, intersects each of these features centrally.
[0036] Now for reference Figure 5 The diagram depicts Figure 4A detailed view of a portion thereof shows that the first groove 22 is defined by a first or top inner surface 64 and a second or top outer surface 66, which are connected to each other by a first planar surface 68. The first planar surface 68 is one of the surfaces defining the membrane or fracture wall 62. The second groove 26 is disposed along the opposite face of the membrane 62. Although the first surface 64 and the second surface 66 define curved portions intersecting the top surface 24, the first surface 64 and the second surface 66 also include straight or planar portions that define a first plane P1 and a second plane P2, respectively, which traverse each of the first surface 64 and the second surface 66 to form a trapezoidal structure. The first plane and the second plane intersect to form an angle θ between approximately 60,000 degrees and approximately 90,000 degrees. In some embodiments, the angle θ formed by the intersection of the first plane P1 and the second plane P2 may be between approximately 60.000 degrees and approximately 180.000 degrees, or between approximately 65.000 degrees and approximately 175.000 degrees, or between approximately 70.000 degrees and approximately 170.000 degrees, or between approximately 75.000 degrees and approximately 165.000 degrees, or between approximately 80.000 degrees and approximately 160.000 degrees. [0037] Still referencing Figure 5The second groove 26 is defined by a third or bottom inner surface 70 and a fourth or bottom outer surface 72, which are connected to each other by a second planar surface 74. The second planar surface 74 is one of the surfaces defining the membrane or fracture wall 62. The first groove 22 is disposed along opposite faces of the membrane 62. Although the third surface 70 and the fourth surface 72 define curved portions intersecting the bottom surface 28, the first surface 70 and the second surface 72 include straight or planar portions that define a third plane P3 and a fourth plane P4, respectively, which cross each of the third surface 70 and the fourth surface 72 to form a trapezoidal structure. The third plane and the fourth plane intersect to form an angle ф between approximately 60,000 degrees and approximately 90,000 degrees. In some embodiments, the third plane P3 and the fourth plane P4 may intersect to form an angle ф, which is between approximately 60.000 degrees and approximately 180.000 degrees, or between approximately 65.000 degrees and approximately 175.000 degrees, or between approximately 70.000 degrees and approximately 170.000 degrees, or between approximately 75.000 degrees and approximately 165.000 degrees, or between approximately 80.000 degrees and approximately 160.000 degrees. In some embodiments, the third plane P3 and the fourth plane P4 may intersect to form an angle ф, which is approximately 50.000 degrees, or approximately 55.000 degrees, or approximately 60.000 degrees, or approximately 65.000 degrees, or approximately 70.000 degrees, or approximately 75.000 degrees, or approximately 80.000 degrees, or approximately 85.000 degrees, or approximately 90.000 degrees, or approximately 95.000 degrees, or approximately 100.000 degrees, or approximately 105.00 degrees. 00 degrees, or approximately 110.000 degrees, or approximately 115.000 degrees, or approximately 120.000 degrees, or approximately 125.000 degrees, or approximately 130.000 degrees, or approximately 135.000 degrees, or approximately 140.000 degrees, or approximately 145.000 degrees, or approximately 150.000 degrees, or approximately 155.000 degrees, or approximately 160.000 degrees, or approximately 165.000 degrees, or approximately 170.000 degrees, or approximately 175.000 degrees.
[0038] Still referencing Figure 5 A fourth axis A4 extends centrally through the first slot 22 and the second slot 26. The fourth axis A4 extends centrally through the first slot 22 and the second slot 26 over their entire length. Preferably, the first slot 22 and the second slot 26 are aligned to form a controlled system whereby an vent can be formed when the membrane 62 ruptures after reaching maximum pressure within the container 32.
[0039] Now for reference Figure 6 Illustration Figure 5 A partially enlarged view. The first planar surface 68 defines a first width W1, which can be between about 0.005 mm and about 0.020 mm, or between about 0.010 mm and about 0.015 mm, or between about 0.100 mm and about 0.900 mm, or between about 0.200 mm and about 0.800 mm, or between about 0.300 mm and about 0.700 mm, or between 0.400 mm and about 0.600 mm, or about 0.500 mm, or about 0.012 mm. In a preferred embodiment, the second width W2 is approximately 0.280 mm.
[0040] like Figure 5 and Figure 6 As shown, the membrane 62 disposed between the second slot 26 and the first slot 22 is defined by a membrane thickness or a distance X1. The second slot 26 further defines a depth, namely a distance X2, and the first slot 22 defines a depth, namely a distance X3. The distances X1, X2, and X3 define the total thickness T of the cap 20 (see...). [0041] The first and second exhaust features 22 and 26, i.e., the first slot and the second slot, can be provided along any opposing surface of the wall of the pressurized container. The second slot 26 is actually a notch within the cap 20, the depth of which can vary depending on the internal pressure of the container 32 (see...). Figure 7 The cap 20 may comprise various metals, such as stainless steel, carbon steel, aluminum, Hastelloy, nickel alloy, titanium, tin, or polymers capable of retaining pressure-bearing material therein. In a preferred embodiment, the cap 20 comprises nickel-plated cold-rolled steel.
[0042] Figure 8-10 Another embodiment of the plate, cover, or cap 120 according to this disclosure is shown. See details. Figure 8 The figure depicts a top isometric view of the cap 120, highlighting a first pressure-relieving feature 122 along the top surface 124 of the cap 120. While the cap 120 is depicted and shown in the figures as having top and bottom surfaces 124, 128, it should be understood that the cap 120 can be configured with either its top surface 124 or bottom surface 128 facing upwards or downwards, and is not necessarily limited to the orientation depicted in the figures. The cap 120 disclosed herein can be adapted to be attached to the sidewall 30 of a can or container 32 in a manner similar to that of the aforementioned cap 20 (see figure 30). Figure 7 ).
[0043] As will be described below, the first pressure relief feature 122 along the cap 120 allows for controlled and targeted pressure relief when a maximum pressure threshold is reached within the container or can to which the cap 120 is applied. (Refer to...) Figure 9 and Figure 10 The first pressure-relieving feature 122 is a first notch that defines a trapezoidal profile, typically with curved or flared edges. Although not specifically shown in the figures, in some embodiments, the first notch 122 may be positioned along the top surface 124 and the bottom surface 128 of the cap 120. The first pressure-relieving feature 122 may be a cut that defines one or more planes or planar surfaces, in a manner similar to that described above for pressure-relieving features 22, 26. Alternatively, the first pressure-relieving feature 122 may be a cut that defines only a curved surface.
[0044] Reference Figure 8 and Figure 9The cover 120 is typically disc-shaped and defines an outer wall 136, which includes an outer edge 138 surrounding the periphery of the cover 120. The outer wall 136 intersects an intermediate wall 140, which extends downward and inward from the outer wall 136 and intersects a bottom wall 142. A first notch 122 is provided between the outer wall 136 and the intermediate wall 140. The walls 136, 140, and 142 each define a top surface 124 and a bottom surface 128. The top surface 124 of the walls 136, 140, and 142 is generally continuous but interrupted by the first notch 122. The bottom surface 128 of the walls 136, 140, and 142 is generally continuous and not interrupted by the notch. The outer wall 136 intersects the intermediate wall 140 at a first corner 144. The corner 144 is generally rounded and defines a portion of the top surface 124 and the bottom surface 128 of the cap 120. The first corner 144 and the first notch 122 are depicted along opposite sides of the cap 120, and the membrane or fracture wall 162 (see...) Figure 10 The display shows that it is located between the first slot 122 and the first corner 144.
[0045] like Figure 8 As shown, the first slot 122 can extend 360.000 degrees around the first axis or longitudinal axis B1. Alternatively, the first slot 122 can extend around the first axis B1 in a manner similar to the first and second slots 22, 26 described above. Furthermore, the first slot 122 can be provided along or cut from the cover 120, similar to the arrangement of the first slot 22 in quadrants 54, 56, 58, 60 described earlier.
[0046] Now for reference Figure 10 The first slot 122 is defined by a first or top inner surface 164 and a second or top outer surface 166, which are connected to each other by a first planar surface 168. The first planar surface 168 is one of the surfaces defining the membrane or fracture wall 162. The first corner 144 is disposed along the opposite surface of the membrane 162. Although the first surface 164 and the second surface 166 define curved portions intersecting the top surface 124, the first surface 164 and the second surface 166 also include straight or planar portions that define a first plane Q1 and a second plane Q2, respectively, which cross each of the first surface 164 and the second surface 166, forming a trapezoidal structure. The first plane Q1 and the second plane Q2 may intersect with the aforementioned planes P1 and P2 in a similar manner. Furthermore, the first planar surface 168 may have similar or the same dimensions as the aforementioned first planar surface 68.
[0047] like Figure 10 As shown, the membrane 162 disposed between the first slot 122 and the first corner 144 is defined by a membrane thickness or a distance Y1. Furthermore, the first slot 122 defines a depth of distance Y3. The distances Y1 and Y3 can be defined in a manner similar to the distances X1 and X3 described above. Additionally, distances Y1 and Y2 define the total thickness U of the cap 120 (see...). Figure 9 The thickness U can be similar to the total thickness T of the aforementioned cover 20. The thickness U along the cover 120 can be constant or can vary along its various portions.
