[0084] Figure 1 This diagram illustrates an antenna structure 100 according to an embodiment of the present invention. The antenna structure 100 can be applied to a mobile device, such as a smartphone, a tablet computer, or a notebook computer. Figure 1 In one embodiment, the antenna structure 100 includes at least a feeding radiation element 110, a first radiation element 120, a first tuner 130, a shorting element 140, a second radiation element 150, and a second tuner 160. The feeding radiation element 110, the first radiation element 120, the shorting element 140, and the second radiation element 150 can all be made of metal, such as copper, silver, aluminum, iron, or alloys thereof.
[0085] The feed radiator 110 can generally be a short, straight strip. Specifically, the feed radiator 110 has a first end 111 and a second end 112, wherein a feeding point FP is located at the first end 111 of the feed radiator 110. The feeding point FP can also be coupled to a signal source 199, such as a radio frequency (RF) module, which can be used to excite the antenna structure 100.
[0086] The first radiating portion 120 may generally be a long, straight strip, and may be generally perpendicular to the feed radiating portion 110. Specifically, the first radiating portion 120 has a first end 121 and a second end 122, wherein the first end 121 of the first radiating portion 120 is coupled to the second end 112 of the feed radiating portion 110, and the second end 122 of the first radiating portion 120 is an open end. However, the invention is not limited thereto. In other embodiments, the included angle between the first radiating portion 120 and the feed radiating portion 110 may be between 45 degrees and 135 degrees, for example: about 70 degrees, about 80 degrees, about 90 degrees, about 100 degrees, or about 110 degrees.
[0087] The first tuner 130 provides a first adjustable impedance value. The first tuner 130 is coupled to a first connection point CP1 on the first radiator 120. Additionally, the first radiator 120 can be coupled to a ground potential VSS via the first tuner 130. For example, the ground potential VSS can be provided by a ground copper foil, which can also be coupled to a system ground plane (not shown). It should be noted that the feed-in radiator 110 is located between the first tuner 130 and the short-circuit section 140. For example, the first tuner 130 can be located to the right of the feed-in radiator 110, and the short-circuit section 140 can be located to the left of the feed-in radiator 110, but this is not a limitation.
[0088] The short-circuit section 140 can be generally L-shaped. Specifically, the short-circuit section 140 has a first end 141 and a second end 142, wherein the first end 141 of the short-circuit section 140 is coupled to the ground potential VSS, and the second end 142 of the short-circuit section 140 is coupled to a second connection point CP2 on the feed-in radiating section 110. That is, the feed-in radiating section 110 can be coupled to the ground potential VSS via the short-circuit section 140.
[0089] The second radiating portion 150 may be generally straight. The second radiating portion 150 is adjacent to the first radiating portion 120 and may be completely separated from it. It should be noted that the terms "adjacent" or "adjacent" in this specification may refer to a distance between two corresponding elements that is less than a predetermined distance (e.g., 5 mm or less), but generally does not include cases where the corresponding elements are in direct contact with each other (i.e., the aforementioned distance is reduced to 0). Specifically, the second radiating portion 150 has a first end 151 and a second end 152, wherein the second end 152 of the second radiating portion 150 is an open-circuit end. For example, the second end 152 of the second radiating portion 150 and the second end 122 of the first radiating portion 120 may extend in generally opposite and mutually distant directions. In some embodiments, the second radiating portion 150 and the first radiating portion 120 are generally parallel to each other, wherein a coupling gap GC1 may be formed between the second radiating portion 150 and the first radiating portion 120.
[0090] In other embodiments, the specific shape of each of the feed radiator 110, the first radiator 120, the short-circuit section 140, and the second radiator 150 can be adjusted according to different needs. For example, any of the feed radiator 110, the first radiator 120, the short-circuit section 140, and the second radiator 150 can be changed to a straight strip of unequal width, an L-shape, a T-shape, a U-shape, or a meandering shape, but is not limited to these.
[0091] The second tuner 160 provides a second adjustable impedance value. The second tuner 160 is coupled to a first terminal 151 of the second radiator 150. Additionally, the second radiator 150 can be coupled to ground potential VSS via the second tuner 160. It must be understood that by using the first tuner 130 and the second tuner 160 for impedance adjustment, the antenna structure 100 can still cover the required wideband operation without increasing the design area.
[0092] In some embodiments, the antenna structure 100 may be formed on a dielectric substrate (not shown). For example, the aforementioned dielectric substrate may be a printed circuit board (PCB) or a flexible printed circuit (FPC). The antenna structure 100 may be a planar structure, but the invention is not limited thereto. In other embodiments, the antenna structure 100 may be a three-dimensional structure and may be formed on any supporting element (not shown) by laser-directed structuring (LDS).
[0093] Figure 2This diagram shows an antenna structure 200 according to an embodiment of the present invention. Figure 2 and Figure 1 Similar. Figure 2 In one embodiment, a first tuner 230 of the antenna structure 200 includes a first variable capacitor C1 and a first switch element 235 connected in series, while a second tuner 260 of the antenna structure 200 includes a second variable capacitor C2 and a second switch element 265 connected in series. Specifically, the first variable capacitor C1 has a first terminal and a second terminal, wherein the first terminal of the first variable capacitor C1 is coupled to a first connection point CP1, and the second terminal of the first variable capacitor C1 is coupled to a first node N1. The first switch element 235 has a first terminal and a second terminal, wherein the first terminal of the first switch element 235 is coupled to the first node N1, and the second terminal of the first switch element 235 is coupled to a ground potential VSS. The first switch element 235 can be selectively turned on or off. The second variable capacitor C2 has a first terminal and a second terminal, wherein the first terminal of the second variable capacitor C2 is coupled to the first terminal 151 of the second radiating section 150, and the second terminal of the second variable capacitor C2 is coupled to a second node N2. The second switch 265 has a first terminal and a second terminal, wherein the first terminal of the second switch 265 is coupled to the second node N2, and the second terminal of the second switch 265 is coupled to ground potential VSS. The second switch 265 can be selectively turned on or off. In some embodiments, the first variable capacitor C1, the second variable capacitor C2, the first switch 235, and the second switch 265 can all be operated according to a control signal from a processor (not shown). Figure 2 The remaining features of the antenna structure 200 are all the same as Figure 1 Since the antenna structures are similar to those of the 100, both embodiments can achieve similar operational effects.
[0094] Figure 3 This diagram shows the return loss of an antenna structure 100 (or 200) according to an embodiment of the present invention, where the horizontal axis represents the operating frequency (MHz) and the vertical axis represents the return loss (dB). Figure 3As shown, a first curve CC1, a second curve CC2, ..., an eighth curve CC8, and a ninth curve CC9 correspond to different impedance values provided by the first tuner 230 and the second tuner 260. For example, if both the first switch 235 and the second switch 265 are on and both the first variable capacitor C1 and the second variable capacitor C2 provide their maximum capacitance values, the operating characteristics of the antenna structure 100 (or 200) will be as described by the first curve CC1. If both the first switch 235 and the second switch 265 are on and both the first variable capacitor C1 and the second variable capacitor C2 provide their minimum capacitance values, the operating characteristics of the antenna structure 100 (or 200) will be as described by the eighth curve CC8. Furthermore, if both the first switch 235 and the second switch 265 are off, the operating characteristics of the antenna structure 100 (or 200) will be as described by the ninth curve CC9. Figure 3 Based on the measurement results, antenna structure 100 (or 200) can at least cover a first frequency band FB1, wherein the first frequency band FB1 can be between 600MHz and 960MHz. However, the invention is not limited thereto. In other embodiments, the first frequency band FB1 can also be between 400MHz and 960MHz to include a relatively lower frequency range.
[0095] In some embodiments, the operating principle of antenna structure 100 (or 200) may be as described below. The second radiating section 150 may be coupled and excited by the feed radiating section 110 and the first radiating section 120 to form the aforementioned first frequency band FB1. The short-circuit section 140 can be used to fine-tune the impedance matching of the first frequency band FB1. Furthermore, the first tuner 130 and the second tuner 160 can be used to significantly increase the operating bandwidth of antenna structure 100.
[0096] In some embodiments, the component dimensions of the antenna structure 100 (or 200) may be as described below. The total length L1 of the feed radiator 110 and the first radiator 120 may be between 0.25 and 0.5 times the wavelength of the first frequency band FB1 of the antenna structure 100 (λ / 4 to λ / 2). The width W1 of the first radiator 120 may be between 1 mm and 5 mm. The length L2 of the second radiator 150 may be between 0.125 and 0.25 times the wavelength of the first frequency band FB1 of the antenna structure 100 (λ / 8 to λ / 4). The width W2 of the second radiator 150 may be between 1 mm and 5 mm. The path length L3 from the feed point FP to the first connection point CP1 may be between 0.125 and 0.25 times the wavelength of the first frequency band FB1 of the antenna structure 100 (λ / 8 to λ / 4). The width W3 of the short-circuit portion 140 may be between 1 mm and 5 mm. The width of the coupling gap GC1 can be between 0.5 mm and 2 mm. The capacitance value of the first variable capacitor C1 can be between 0.7 pF and 8 pF. The capacitance value of the second variable capacitor C2 can be between 0.7 pF and 8 pF. The above size ranges are derived from multiple experimental results and help optimize the operating bandwidth and impedance matching of antenna structure 100 (or 200).
[0097] The following embodiments will illustrate other variations of the antenna structure 100, which can also achieve similar effects. It must be understood that these figures and descriptions are merely examples and are not intended to limit the scope of the invention.
[0098] Figure 4 This diagram shows an antenna structure 400 according to an embodiment of the present invention. Figure 4 and Figure 1 Similar. Figure 4 In one embodiment, the antenna structure 400 further includes a third radiating part 470, a fourth radiating part 480, and a fifth radiating part 490, all of which can be made of metal.
[0099] The third radiating section 470 may be generally straight and may be generally perpendicular to the feed radiating section 110. Specifically, the third radiating section 470 has a first end 471 and a second end 472, wherein the first end 471 of the third radiating section 470 is coupled to the second end 112 of the feed radiating section 110, and the second end 472 of the third radiating section 470 is an open-circuit end. For example, the second end 472 of the third radiating section 470 and the second end 122 of the first radiating section 120 may extend in generally opposite and mutually distant directions. In some embodiments, a combination of the feed radiating section 110, the first radiating section 120, and the third radiating section 470 generally forms a T-shape.
[0100] The fourth radiating section 480 may generally be in a narrow L-shape, with the fourth radiating section 480 adjacent to the feed point FP. Specifically, the fourth radiating section 480 has a first end 481 and a second end 482, wherein the first end 481 of the fourth radiating section 480 is coupled to ground potential VSS, while the second end 482 of the fourth radiating section 480 is an open-circuit end. For example, the second end 482 of the fourth radiating section 480 and the second end 472 of the third radiating section 470 may extend in generally the same direction.
[0101] The fifth radiating section 490 may generally present another narrower L-shape, wherein the fifth radiating section 490 is disposed between the third radiating section 470 and the short-circuit section 140. Specifically, the fifth radiating section 490 has a first end 491 and a second end 492, wherein the first end 491 of the fifth radiating section 490 is coupled to a third connection point CP3 on the short-circuit section 140, while the second end 492 of the fifth radiating section 490 is an open-circuit end. For example, the second end 492 of the fifth radiating section 490 and the second end 472 of the third radiating section 470 may extend in generally the same direction. Figure 4 The remaining features of the antenna structure 400 are all the same as Figure 1 Since the antenna structures are similar to those of the 100, both embodiments can achieve similar operational effects.
[0102] Figure 5 This diagram shows the return loss of an antenna structure 400 according to an embodiment of the present invention, where the horizontal axis represents the operating frequency (MHz) and the vertical axis represents the return loss (dB). Figure 5 Based on the measurement results, the antenna structure 400 can also cover a second frequency band FB2, a third frequency band FB3, and a fourth frequency band FB4. For example, the second frequency band FB2 can be between 1575MHz and 2690MHz, the third frequency band FB3 can be between 3200MHz and 4200MHz, and the fourth frequency band FB4 can be between 5150MHz and 5925MHz. Therefore, the antenna structure 400 will be able to support at least sub-6GHz wideband operation in next-generation 5G communications.
[0103] In some embodiments, the operating principle of the antenna structure 400 may be as follows. The feed radiator 110 and the third radiator 470 can jointly generate the aforementioned second frequency band FB2. The fourth radiator 480 can generate the aforementioned third frequency band FB3. The feed radiator 110, the short-circuit section 140, and the fifth radiator 490 can jointly generate the aforementioned fourth frequency band FB4. In other words, the addition of the third radiator 470, the fourth radiator 480, and the fifth radiator 490 helps to increase the high-frequency bandwidth of the antenna structure 400.
[0104] In some embodiments, the component dimensions of the antenna structure 400 may be as described below. The total length L4 of the feed radiator 110 and the third radiator 470 may be between 0.25 and 0.5 times the wavelength of the second frequency band FB2 of the antenna structure 400 (λ / 4 to λ / 2). The width W4 of the third radiator 470 may be between 1 mm and 5 mm. The length L5 of the fourth radiator 480 may be between 0.5 and 1 times the wavelength of the third frequency band FB3 of the antenna structure 400 (λ / 2 to 1λ). The width W5 of the fourth radiator 480 may be between 1 mm and 4 mm. The distance D1 between the fourth radiator 480 and the feed point FP may be between 0.125 and 0.25 times the wavelength of the third frequency band FB3 of the antenna structure 400 (λ / 8 to λ / 4). The path length L6 from the feed point FP through the second connection point CP2 and the third connection point CP3 to the second end 492 of the fifth radiating section 490 can be between 0.25 and 0.5 times the wavelength of the fourth frequency band FB4 of the antenna structure 400 (λ / 4 to λ / 2). The width W6 of the fifth radiating section 490 can be between 1 mm and 4 mm. These dimensional ranges were determined based on the results of multiple experiments and help optimize the operating bandwidth and impedance matching of the antenna structure 400.
