This invention discloses a method for producing adiponitrile by electrolysis of acrylonitrile. Acrylonitrile is converted to adiponitrile in an electrolytic cell containing an electrolyte at electrodes subjected to alternating current. This invention uses alternating current electrolysis to prepare adiponitrile, simplifying the step of converting alternating current to direct current in traditional direct current electrolysis techniques. The electrolyte of this invention also contains metal particles. Compared with traditional plate-and-frame electrodes, the metal ions in the solution provide a larger reaction surface for the conversion of acrylonitrile to adiponitrile, which can improve the processing capacity of the electrolytic cell per unit time and increase production output.
