Abstract

Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communication are described. In some systems, a transmitting device can transmit a reference signal indicating a first service type supported by the transmitting device, and a receiving device can receive the reference signal and determine whether to measure a signal strength associated with the reference signal based on determining whether the first service type supported by the transmitting device is the same service type as a second service type supported by the receiving device. For example, if the first service type indicated by the reference signal is the same service type as the second service type supported by the receiving device, the receiving device can measure the reference signal. Alternatively, if the first service type indicated by the reference signal is a different service type than the second service type supported by the receiving device, the receiving device can refrain from measuring the reference signal.

[0002] This patent application claims the benefits of U.S. Provisional Patent Application No. 63 / 076,919, entitled “TECHNIQUES FORMEASURING SERVICE-ASSOCIATED REFERENCE SIGNALS”, filed by Ly et al. on September 10, 2020, and U.S. Patent Application No. 17 / 466,779, entitled “SERVICE-ASSOCIATED REFERENCE SIGNALS”, filed by Ly et al. on September 3, 2021; each of which is assigned to the assignee of this application. Technical Field

[0003] The following typically pertain to wireless communications, including service-associated reference signals. Background Technology

[0004] Wireless communication systems are widely deployed to provide various types of communication content, such as voice, video, packet data, messaging, and broadcasting. These systems can support communication with multiple users by sharing available system resources (e.g., time, frequency, and power). Examples of such multiple access systems include fourth-generation (4G) systems such as Long Term Evolution (LTE), LTE-A Advanced (LTE-A), or LTE-A Pro systems, and fifth-generation (5G) systems, which may be referred to as New Radio (NR) systems. These systems can employ technologies such as Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA), Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA), Frequency Division Multiple Access (FDMA), Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA), or Discrete Fourier Transform Extended Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (DFT-S-OFDM). A wireless multiple access communication system may include one or more base stations or one or more network access nodes, each of which simultaneously supports communication from multiple communication devices, which may also be referred to as User Equipment (UE).

[0005] In some wireless communication systems, a UE and a base station can communicate via one or more relay nodes. In some cases, such as when the existing link between the UE and a relay node deteriorates, the UE can perform a handover procedure via a different relay node to rebuild the connection with the base station or establish a connection with a different base station. During the handover procedure, a device in the system (which may be referred to as a receiving device, and which may be a UE, a relay node, or a base station) can measure a reference signal transmitted by one or more other devices (which may be referred to as a transmitting device, and which may be one or more of a UE, a relay node, or a base station) to determine which link provides sufficient signal strength for communication between the UE and the base station.

[0006] Different devices (such as relay nodes and base stations) may support different service types (which may be related to different Quality of Service (QoS) constraints), and the UE may attempt to establish a connection with a base station and relay node that at least supports the service type also supported by the UE. However, in some cases, the receiving device may not be able to determine the service type supported by the transmitting device until after measuring a reference signal, sending a measurement report to the transmitting device, establishing a connection with the transmitting device, and reporting its capabilities. Therefore, after measuring one or more reference signals, sending a measurement report to the transmitting device, establishing a connection with the transmitting device, and reporting its capabilities, the receiving device may determine that the transmitting device does not support the same service type as the receiving device, which may lead to inefficient processing and resource usage by the receiving device, as well as unnecessary transmissions. [0035] Various aspects typically involve service-associated reference signals that enable a receiving device to determine the type of service supported by the transmitting device. In some aspects, the receiving device determines whether to measure the signal strength associated with the service-associated reference signal and send a measurement report including the measured signal strength based on whether the service type indicated by the reference signal is the same as the service type supported by the receiving device. For example, in an example where the receiving device supports a first service type and determines based on the received reference signal that the transmitting device also supports the first service type, the receiving device may measure the reference signal and send a measurement report to the transmitting device based on the measurement result. Alternatively, in an example where the receiving device supports a first service type and determines based on the received reference signal that the transmitting device supports a second service type (a different service type), the receiving device may avoid measuring the reference signal and may also avoid sending a measurement report to the transmitting device. The transmitting device may indicate the service type supported by the transmitting device via the reference signal in one or more ways, and one or both of the transmitting and receiving devices may determine a mapping between different service types and different reference signal types (e.g., a base station or relay node may configure the mapping and send an indication of the mapping to a user equipment (UE). In some examples, the transmitting device can achieve this by transmitting different types of reference signals according to the mapping, in one or more ways, based on its indication of different service types supported by the transmitting device. Such different reference signal types may involve reference signals transmitted through different resources, reference signals transmitted using different sequences, reference signals transmitted based on different cell identifiers (IDs), reference signals including different indications of service types (e.g., within the payload of the reference signal), or combinations thereof.

[0036] Specific aspects of the subject matter described in this disclosure can be implemented to achieve one or more potential advantages. In some aspects, the described techniques can be used to prevent potentially unnecessary transmission of measurement reports from the receiving device and are generally used to provide more efficient resource utilization. For example, by avoiding the measurement of signal strength associated with reference signals indicating service types not supported by the receiving device, the receiving device can achieve greater power savings and increased battery life. Furthermore, by avoiding the transmission of measurement reports for reference signals indicating service types not supported by the receiving device, the receiving device can prevent the use of resources intended for transmitting measurement reports, which can also improve power savings at the receiving device while increasing system capacity (because other devices can use resources not used by the receiving device). Thus, the described techniques can be used to provide greater power savings, higher data rates, greater spectral efficiency, and other benefits.

[0037] Figure 1An example of a wireless communication system 100 is shown, illustrating reference signals associated with support services according to various aspects of this disclosure. The wireless communication system 100 includes one or more base stations 105, one or more UEs 115, and a core network 130. In some examples, the wireless communication system 100 may be a Long Term Evolution (LTE) network, an Advanced LTE (LTE-A) network, an LTE-APro network, or a New Radio (NR) network. In some cases, the wireless communication system 100 may support enhanced broadband communication, ultra-reliable (e.g., mission-critical) communication, low-latency communication, communication with low-cost and low-complexity devices, or combinations thereof.

[0038] Base stations 105 can be distributed throughout a geographic area to form a wireless communication system 100, and can be devices of different forms or with different capabilities. Base stations 105 and UE 115 can communicate wirelessly via one or more communication links 125. Each base station 105 can provide a geographic coverage area 110, and UE 115 and base station 105 can establish one or more communication links 125 on the geographic coverage area 110. The geographic coverage area 110 can be an example of a geographic area on which base stations 105 and UE 115 support communication of signals according to one or more radio access technologies.

[0039] UE 115 can be distributed across the geographical coverage area 110 of the wireless communication system 100, and each UE 115 can be stationary, mobile, or both at different times. UE 115 can be devices of different forms or with different capabilities. Figure 1 Some example UE 115s are shown in the figure. Figure 1 As shown, the UE 115 described herein can communicate with various types of devices, such as other UE 115s, base station 105, or network devices (e.g., core network nodes, relay devices, integrated access and backhaul (IAB) nodes, or other network devices).

[0040] Base station 105 can communicate with core network 130, communicate with each other, or perform both. For example, base station 105 can interface with core network 130 via one or more backhaul links 120 (e.g., via S1, N2, N3, or other interfaces). Base station 105 can communicate directly with each other (e.g., directly between base stations 105) or indirectly (e.g., via core network 130) via backhaul links 120 (e.g., via X2, Xn, or other interfaces), or both. In some examples, backhaul link 120 can be or includes one or more radio links.

[0041] One or more of the base stations 105 described herein may include, or may be referred to by those skilled in the art as, base station, radio base station, access point, radio transceiver, node B, e-node B (eNB), next-generation node B or giga node B (any of which may be referred to as gNB), home node B, home e-node B or other suitable terms.

[0042] UE 115 may include or be referred to as a mobile device, wireless device, remote device, handheld device, or user device, or any other suitable term. "Device" may also be referred to as a cell, station, terminal, or client, etc. UE 115 may also include or be referred to as a personal electronic device, such as a cellular phone, personal digital assistant (PDA), tablet computer, laptop computer, or personal computer. In some examples, UE 115 may also include or be referred to as a wireless local loop (WLL) station, Internet of Things (IoT) device, Internet of Everything (IoE) device, or machine-type communication (MTC) device, which may be implemented in various objects such as devices, vehicles, or meters.

[0043] The UE 115 described in this article can communicate with various types of devices, such as Figure 1 As shown, various types of devices include other UEs 115 that can sometimes act as relays, base stations 105, and network equipment including macro eNBs or gNBs, small cell eNBs or gNBs, or relay base stations.

[0044] UE 115 and base station 105 can wirelessly communicate with each other via one or more carriers through one or more communication links 125. The term "carrier" can refer to a set of radio spectrum resources having a defined physical layer structure for supporting communication link 125. For example, a carrier for communication link 125 may include a portion of the radio spectrum band (e.g., a bandwidth portion (BWP)) operating according to one or more physical layer channels for a given radio access technology (e.g., LTE, LTE-A, LTE-A Pro, NR). Each physical layer channel may carry acquisition signaling (e.g., synchronization signals, system information), control signaling for coordinating operation for the carrier, user data, or other signaling. Wireless communication system 100 can support communication with UE 115 using carrier aggregation or multi-carrier operation. Depending on the carrier aggregation configuration, UE 115 can be configured with multiple downlink component carriers and one or more uplink component carriers. Carrier aggregation can be used with frequency division duplex (FDD) component carriers and time division duplex (TDD) component carriers.

[0045] In some examples (e.g., in a carrier aggregation configuration), a carrier may also have acquisition signaling or control signaling to coordinate the operation of other carriers. A carrier may be associated with a frequency channel (e.g., an Evolved Universal Mobile Telecommunications System Terrestrial Radio Access (E-UTRA) Absolute Radio Frequency Channel Number (EARFCN)) and can be located according to the channel grid discovered by UE 115. A carrier can operate in standalone mode, where initial acquisition and connection can be performed by UE 115 via the carrier, or in non-standalone mode, where a connection is anchored using different carriers (e.g., those with the same or different radio access technologies).

[0046] The communication link 125 shown in the wireless communication system 100 may include uplink transmission from UE 115 to base station 105, or downlink transmission from base station 105 to UE 115. The carrier may carry downlink communication or uplink communication (e.g., in FDD mode), or may be configured to carry both downlink and uplink communication (e.g., in TDD mode).

[0047] A carrier can be associated with a specific bandwidth of the radio spectrum, and in some examples, the carrier bandwidth can be referred to as the carrier or the "system bandwidth" of the wireless communication system 100. For example, the carrier bandwidth can be a specific bandwidth (e.g., 1.4, 3, 5, 10, 15, 20, 40, or 80 MHz) of a carrier used for radio access technologies. Devices of the wireless communication system 100 (e.g., base station 105, UE 115, or both) can have a hardware configuration that supports communication on a specific carrier bandwidth, or can be configurable to support communication on a set of carrier bandwidths. In some examples, the wireless communication system 100 may include a base station 105 or UE 115 that supports simultaneous communication via carriers associated with multiple carrier bandwidths. In some examples, each served UE 115 can be configured to operate on a portion (e.g., a subband, BWP) or all of the carrier bandwidth.

[0048] The signal waveform transmitted on a carrier can consist of multiple subcarriers (e.g., using multi-carrier modulation (MCM) techniques, such as orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) or discrete Fourier transform extended OFDM (DFT-S-OFDM)). In a system employing MCM, a resource element can include a symbol period (e.g., the duration of a modulation symbol) and a subcarrier, with the symbol period and subcarrier spacing being inversely proportional. The number of bits carried by each resource element can depend on the modulation scheme (e.g., the order of the modulation scheme, the coding rate of the modulation scheme, or both). Therefore, the more resource elements the UE 115 receives and the higher the order of the modulation scheme, the higher the data rate the UE 115 can achieve. Wireless communication resources can refer to a combination of radio spectrum resources, temporal resources, and spatial resources (e.g., spatial layers or beams), and the use of multiple spatial layers can further improve the data rate or data integrity used for communication with the UE 115.

[0049] One or more digital schemes can be supported for a carrier, and the digital scheme can include a subcarrier spacing (Δf) and a cyclic prefix. A carrier can be divided into one or more BWPs with the same or different digital schemes. In some examples, the UE 115 can be configured with multiple BWPs. In some examples, a single BWP for a carrier can be active at a given time, and communication for the UE 115 can be limited to one or more active BWPs.

[0050] The time interval used for base station 105 or UE 115 can be expressed as a multiple of a basic time unit, which can, for example, refer to T. s =1 / (Δf) max ·N f The sampling period is ) seconds, where Δf max This can represent the maximum supported subcarrier spacing, N. f This can represent the maximum supported Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) size. The time interval of the communication resource can be organized according to each radio frame having a specified duration (e.g., 10 milliseconds (ms)). Each radio frame can be identified by a System Frame Number (SFN) (e.g., ranging from 0 to 1023).

[0051] Each frame may include multiple consecutively numbered subframes or time slots, and each subframe or time slot may have the same duration. In some examples, a frame (e.g., in the time domain) may be divided into subframes, and each subframe may be further divided into multiple time slots. Alternatively, each frame may include a variable number of time slots, and the number of time slots may depend on the subcarrier spacing. Each time slot may include multiple symbol periods (e.g., depending on the length of the cyclic prefix preceding each symbol period). In some wireless communication systems 100, a time slot may be further divided into multiple mini-time slots containing one or more symbols. In addition to the cyclic prefix, each symbol period may contain one or more (e.g., N) symbols. f (Number) sampling periods. The duration of a symbol period can depend on the subcarrier spacing or the operating frequency band.

[0052] A subframe, time slot, mini-slot, or symbol can be the smallest scheduling unit of the wireless communication system 100 (e.g., in the time domain) and can be referred to as a transmission time interval (TTI). In some examples, the duration of the TTI (e.g., the number of symbol periods in the TTI) can be variable. Additionally or alternatively, the smallest scheduling unit of the wireless communication system 100 can be dynamically selected (e.g., in bursts of short-time TTIs (sTTIs)).

[0053] Physical channels can be multiplexed on a carrier using various techniques. Physical control channels and physical data channels can be multiplexed on a downlink carrier, for example, using one or more of Time Division Multiplexing (TDM), Frequency Division Multiplexing (FDM), or hybrid TDM-FDM techniques. A control region (e.g., a control resource set (CORESET)) for physical control channels can be defined by multiple symbol periods and can be extended across the system bandwidth or a subset of the system bandwidth of the carrier. One or more control regions (e.g., CORESETs) can be configured for a group of UEs 115. For example, one or more UEs 115 can monitor or search for control regions for control information based on one or more search space sets, and each search space set can include one or more control channel candidates arranged in a concatenated manner with one or more aggregation levels. The aggregation level of the control channel candidates can refer to the number of control channel resources (e.g., control channel elements (CCEs)) associated with coded information for a control information format with a given payload size. The search space set can include a common search space set configured to send control information to multiple UEs 115 and a UE-specific search space set configured to send control information to a specific UE 115.

[0054] Each base station 105 may provide communication coverage via one or more cells (e.g., macro cells, small cells, hotspots, or other types of cells, or various combinations thereof). The term "cell" may refer to a logical communication entity used to communicate with base station 105 (e.g., via a carrier) and may be associated with an ID used to distinguish neighboring cells (e.g., Physical Cell ID (PCID), Virtual Cell ID (VCID), etc.). In some examples, a cell may also refer to a geographic coverage area 110 or a portion of geographic coverage area 110 (e.g., a sector) on which a logical communication entity operates. Such cells may range from smaller areas (e.g., structures, subsets of structures) to larger areas depending on various factors such as the capabilities of base station 105. For example, a cell may be or include buildings, subsets of buildings, or external spaces between or overlapping geographic coverage areas 110, etc.

[0055] Macro cells typically cover a relatively large geographical area (e.g., a radius of several kilometers) and can allow unrestricted access for UE 115 with a service subscription to a network provider supporting the macro cell. In contrast, small cells can be associated with a lower-power base station 105 and can operate in the same or different (e.g., licensed, unlicensed, etc.) frequency bands compared to macro cells. Small cells can provide unrestricted access to UE 115 with a service subscription to a network provider, or restricted access to UEs associated with the small cell (e.g., UE 115 in a Closed Subscriber Group (CSG), UE 115 associated with a user at home or office, etc.). Base station 105 can support one or more cells and can also support communication using one or more component carriers.

[0056] In some examples, a carrier can support multiple cells and can be configured with different cells based on different protocol types that can provide access for different types of devices (e.g., MTC, Narrowband IoT (NB-IoT), Enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB)).

[0057] In some examples, base station 105 may be mobile, and thus provide communication coverage for mobile geographic coverage areas 110. In some examples, different geographic coverage areas 110 associated with different technologies may overlap, but different geographic coverage areas 110 may be supported by the same base station 105. In other examples, overlapping geographic coverage areas 110 associated with different technologies may be supported by different base stations 105. Wireless communication system 100 may include, for example, a heterogeneous network, wherein different types of base stations 105 use the same or different radio access technologies to provide coverage for various geographic coverage areas 110.

[0058] The wireless communication system 100 can support synchronous or asynchronous operation. For synchronous operation, base stations 105 can have similar frame timing, and transmissions from different base stations 105 can be approximately time-aligned. For asynchronous operation, base stations 105 can have different frame timing, and transmissions from different base stations 105 can be time-disaligned. The techniques described herein can be used for both synchronous and asynchronous operation.

[0059] Some UEs 115, such as MTC devices or IoT devices, can be low-cost or low-complexity devices and can provide automated communication between machines (e.g., via machine-to-machine (M2M) communication). M2M communication or MTC can refer to data communication technologies that allow devices to communicate with each other or with base station 105 without human intervention. In some examples, M2M communication or MTC may include communication from devices with integrated sensors or meters that measure or capture information and relay that information to a central server or application, which can then utilize or present the information to a person interacting with the application. Some UEs 115 can be designed to collect information or automate the behavior of machines or other devices. Examples of applications for MTC devices include smart metering, inventory monitoring, water level monitoring, equipment monitoring, medical monitoring, wildlife monitoring, weather and geological event monitoring, fleet management and tracking, remote security sensing, physical access control, and transaction-based business billing.

[0060] Some UE 115s can be configured to operate in modes designed to reduce power consumption, such as half-duplex communication (e.g., a mode that supports unidirectional communication via transmission or reception but not both simultaneously). In some examples, half-duplex communication can be performed at a reduced peak rate. Other power-saving techniques for UE 115s include entering a power-saving “deep sleep” mode when not engaged in active communication, operating on limited bandwidth (e.g., according to narrowband communication), or a combination of these techniques. For example, some UE 115s can be configured to operate using narrowband protocol types associated with a defined portion or range (e.g., a set of subcarriers or resource blocks (RBs)) within a carrier, within a carrier’s guard band, or outside a carrier.

[0061] Wireless communication system 100 can be configured to support ultra-reliable communication or low-latency communication, or various combinations thereof. For example, wireless communication system 100 can be configured to support ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC) or mission-critical communication. UE 115 can be designed to support ultra-reliable, low-latency, or mission-critical functions (e.g., mission-critical functions). Ultra-reliable communication can include private or group communication and can be supported by one or more mission-critical services (such as Mission-Critical Push-to-Talk (MCPTT), Mission-Critical Video (MCVideo), or Mission-Critical Data (MCData)). Support for mission-critical functions can include service prioritization, and mission-critical services can be used for public safety or general commercial applications. The terms ultra-reliable, low-latency, mission-critical, and ultra-reliable low-latency are used interchangeably herein.

[0062] In some examples, UE 115 can also communicate directly with other UE 115 via device-to-device (D2D) communication link 135 (e.g., using a peer-to-peer (P2P) protocol or a D2D protocol). One or more UE 115s can utilize D2D communication within the geographic coverage area 110 of base station 105. Other UE 115s in such a group may be outside the geographic coverage area 110 of base station 105 or unable to receive transmissions from base station 105. In some examples, a group of UE 115s communicating via D2D communication can utilize a one-to-many (1:M) system, where each UE 115 transmits to every other UE 115 in the group. In some examples, base station 105 facilitates the scheduling of resources for D2D communication. In other cases, D2D communication between UE 115s is performed without involving base station 105.

[0063] In some systems, the D2D communication link 135 may be an example of a communication channel, such as a lateral link communication channel between vehicles (e.g., UE 115). In some examples, vehicles may communicate using vehicle-to-all (V2X) communication, vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication, or some combination of these communications. Vehicles may send information related to traffic conditions, signal control, weather, safety, emergencies, or any other information relevant to the V2X system. In some examples, vehicles in a V2X system may communicate with roadside infrastructure (such as roadside units), or communicate with the network via vehicle-to-network (V2N) communication through one or more network nodes (e.g., base station 105), or both.

[0064] Core network 130 can provide user authentication, access authorization, tracking, Internet Protocol (IP) connectivity, and other access, routing, or mobility functions. Core network 130 can be an evolved packet core (EPC) or a 5G core (5GC), and may include: at least one control plane entity that manages access and mobility (e.g., a Mobility Management Entity (MME), Access and Mobility Management Functions (AMF)); and at least one user plane entity that routes packets or interconnects to external networks (e.g., a Serving Gateway (S-GW), a Packet Data Network (PDN) Gateway (P-GW), a User Plane Function (UPF)). The control plane entity can manage non-access stratum (NAS) functions, such as mobility, authentication, and bearer management, for UE 115 served by base station 105 associated with core network 130. User IP packets can be transmitted through the user plane entity, which can provide IP address allocation and other functions. The user plane entity can connect to IP service 150 for one or more network operators. IP service 150 may include access to the Internet, intranet, IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS), or packet-switched (PS) streaming services.

[0065] At least some network devices, such as base station 105, may include sub-components such as access network entity 140, which may be an example of an access node controller (ANC). Each access network entity 140 may communicate with UE 115 through several other access network transport entities 145, which may be referred to as a radio headend, smart radio headend, or transmit / receive point. Each access network transport entity 145 may include one or more antenna panels. In some configurations, the various functions of each access network entity 140 or base station 105 may be distributed among various network devices (e.g., radio headends and ANCs) or combined into a single network device (e.g., base station 105).

[0066] Wireless communication system 100 can operate using one or more frequency bands, sometimes in the range of 300 MHz to 300 GHz. Typically, the region from 300 MHz to 3 GHz is referred to as the Ultra High Frequency (UHF) region or decimeter band because the wavelength range is from approximately one decimeter to one meter. UHF waves may be blocked or redirected by buildings and environmental features; however, the waves can penetrate structures sufficiently to allow macrocells to provide service to UE 115 located indoors. Compared to transmissions using lower frequencies and longer waves in the High Frequency (HF) or Very High Frequency (VHF) portions of the spectrum below 300 MHz, UHF wave transmission can be associated with smaller antennas and shorter distances (e.g., less than 100 km).

[0067] The wireless communication system 100 can also operate in the ultra-high frequency (SHF) region using a frequency band from 3 GHz to 30 GHz (also known as the centimeter band), or in the extremely high frequency (EHF) region of the spectrum (e.g., from 30 GHz to 300 GHz) (also known as the millimeter wave band). In some examples, the wireless communication system 100 can support millimeter wave (mmW) communication between the UE 115 and the base station 105, and the EHF antennas of the corresponding devices can be even smaller and more closely spaced than UHF antennas. In some examples, this can facilitate the use of antenna arrays within the device. However, the propagation of EHF transmissions may be subject to even greater atmospheric attenuation and shorter distances than SHF or UHF transmissions. The techniques disclosed herein can be used for transmissions across one or more different frequency regions, and the designated use of frequency bands across these frequency regions may vary by country or regulatory authority.

[0068] Wireless communication system 100 can utilize both licensed and unlicensed radio spectrum bands. For example, wireless communication system 100 can employ Licensed Assisted Access (LAA), LTE-Unlicensed (LTE-U) radio access technology, or NR technology in an unlicensed band (e.g., the 5 GHz Industrial, Scientific, and Medical (ISM) band). When operating in an unlicensed radio spectrum band, devices such as base station 105 and UE 115 can employ carrier sensing for collision detection and avoidance. In some examples, operation in the unlicensed band can be based on carrier aggregation configuration combined with component carriers operating in a licensed band (e.g., LAA). Operation in the unlicensed spectrum can include downlink transmissions, uplink transmissions, P2P transmissions, or D2D transmissions, etc.

[0069] Base station 105 or UE 115 may be equipped with multiple antennas, which can be used to employ techniques such as transmit diversity, receive diversity, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication, or beamforming. The antennas of base station 105 or UE 115 may be located within one or more antenna arrays or antenna panels, wherein the antenna arrays or antenna panels may support MIMO operation or transmit or receive beamforming. For example, one or more base station antennas or antenna arrays may be located together at an antenna assembly such as an antenna tower. In some examples, the antennas or antenna arrays associated with base station 105 may be located in different geographical locations. Base station 105 may have an antenna array with several rows and columns of antenna ports that base station 105 can use to support beamforming of communications with UE 115. Similarly, UE 115 may have one or more antenna arrays that can support various MIMO or beamforming operations. Additionally or alternatively, antenna panels may support radio frequency beamforming for signals transmitted via antenna ports.

[0070] Base station 105 or UE 115 can use MIMO communication to employ multipath signal propagation and increase spectral efficiency by transmitting or receiving multiple signals via different spatial layers. Such a technique can be referred to as spatial multiplexing. For example, multiple signals can be transmitted by a transmitting device via different antennas or different combinations of antennas. Similarly, multiple signals can be received by a receiving device via different antennas or different combinations of antennas. Each of the multiple signals can be referred to as a separate spatial stream and can carry bits associated with the same data stream (e.g., the same codeword) or different data streams (e.g., different codewords). Different spatial layers can be associated with different antenna ports used for channel measurement and reporting. MIMO techniques include single-user MIMO (SU-MIMO) for transmitting multiple spatial layers to the same receiving device and multi-user MIMO (MU-MIMO) for transmitting multiple spatial layers to multiple devices.

[0071] Beamforming, also known as spatial filtering, directional transmission, or directional reception, is a signal processing technique used at a transmitting or receiving device (e.g., base station 105, UE 115) to shape or manipulate an antenna beam (e.g., transmit beam, receive beam) along a spatial path between the transmitting and receiving devices. Beamforming can be achieved by combining signals transmitted via antenna elements of an antenna array such that some signals propagating relative to the antenna array in a particular orientation experience constructive interference, while others experience destructive interference. Adjustments to the signals transmitted via the antenna elements can include the transmitting or receiving device applying amplitude offset, phase offset, or both to the signals carried via the antenna elements associated with the device. The adjustments associated with each antenna element can be defined by a beamforming weight set associated with a particular orientation (e.g., relative to the antenna array of the transmitting or receiving device or relative to another orientation).

[0072] Base station 105 or UE 115 may use beam scanning technology as part of beamforming operations. For example, base station 105 may use multiple antennas or antenna arrays (e.g., antenna panels) for beamforming operations for directional communication with UE 115. Some signals (e.g., synchronization signals, reference signals, beam selection signals, or other control signals) may be transmitted multiple times by base station 105 in different directions. For example, base station 105 may transmit signals according to different beamforming weight sets associated with different transmission directions. Transmissions in different beam directions may be used (e.g., by a transmitting device such as base station 105, or by a receiving device such as UE 115) to identify the beam direction for subsequent transmissions or receptions by base station 105.

[0073] Some signals, such as data signals associated with a specific receiving device, may be transmitted by base station 105 in a single beam direction (e.g., the direction associated with a receiving device such as UE 115). In some examples, the beam direction associated with transmission along a single beam direction may be determined based on the signals transmitted in one or more beam directions. For example, UE 115 may receive one or more signals transmitted by base station 105 in different directions and may report to base station 105 an indication of the signal received by UE 115 with the highest signal quality or other acceptable signal quality.

[0074] In some examples, transmission by a device (e.g., by base station 105 or UE 115) may be performed using multiple beam directions, and the device may use a combination of digital precoding or radio frequency beamforming to generate a combined beam for transmission (e.g., from base station 105 to UE 115). UE 115 may report feedback indicating precoding weights for one or more beam directions, and the feedback may correspond to a configured number of beams spanning the system bandwidth or one or more subbands. Base station 105 may transmit reference signals that may or may not be precoded (e.g., cell-specific reference signal (CRS), channel state information (CSI) reference signal (CSI-RS)). UE 115 may provide feedback for beam selection, which may be a precoding matrix indicator (PMI) or codebook-based feedback (e.g., multi-panel type codebook, linear combination type codebook, port selection type codebook). Although these techniques are described with reference to signals transmitted by base station 105 in one or more directions, UE 115 may employ similar techniques to transmit signals multiple times in different directions (e.g., to determine the beam direction for subsequent transmission or reception by UE 115), or to transmit signals in a single direction (e.g., to transmit data to a receiving device).

[0075] A receiving device (e.g., UE 115) may attempt multiple receiving configurations (e.g., directional detection) when receiving various signals (such as synchronization signals, reference signals, beam selection signals, or other control signals) from base station 105. For example, the receiving device may attempt multiple receiving directions by: receiving via different antenna subarrays; processing the received signals according to different antenna subarrays; receiving according to different sets of receiving beamforming weights applied to signals received at multiple antenna elements of the antenna array (e.g., different directional detection weight sets); or processing the received signals according to different sets of receiving beamforming weights applied to signals received at multiple antenna elements of the antenna array. Any of these operations, depending on the different receiving configuration or receiving direction, can be referred to as "detection." In some examples, the receiving device may use a single receiving configuration to receive along a single beam direction (e.g., when receiving a data signal). A single receiver configuration can be aligned on a beam direction determined based on detection of different receiver configuration directions (e.g., a beam direction determined based on detection of multiple beam directions to have the highest signal strength, the highest signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), or other acceptable signal quality).

[0076] The wireless communication system 100 can be a packet-based network operating according to a layered protocol stack. In the user plane, communication at the bearer or Packet Data Convergence Protocol (PDCP) layer can be IP-based. The Radio Link Control (RLC) layer can perform packet segmentation and reassembly for communication on logical channels. The Medium Access Control (MAC) layer can perform priority processing and multiplexing from logical channels to transport channels. The MAC layer can also use error detection techniques, error correction techniques, or both to support retransmissions at the MAC layer to improve link efficiency. In the control plane, the Radio Resource Control (RRC) protocol layer can provide the establishment, configuration, and maintenance of RRC connections between the UE 115 and the base station 105 or core network 130 supporting radio bearers for user plane data. At the physical layer, transport channels can be mapped to physical channels.

[0077] UE 115 and base station 105 can support data retransmission to increase the likelihood of successful data reception. Hybrid Automatic Repeat Request (HARQ) feedback is a technique used to increase the likelihood of correctly receiving data on communication link 125. HARQ can include a combination of error detection (e.g., using Cyclic Redundancy Check (CRC)), forward error correction (FEC), and retransmission (e.g., Automatic Repeat Request (ARQ)). HARQ can improve throughput at the MAC layer under poor radio conditions (e.g., low signal-to-noise ratio conditions). In some examples, the device can support simultaneous time-slot HARQ feedback, allowing the device to provide HARQ feedback in a specific time slot for data received in a previous symbol within that time slot. In other examples, the device can provide HARQ feedback in subsequent time slots or according to some other time interval.

[0078] In some examples, UE 115 and base station 105 can communicate directly via communication link 125, which can be an example of a Uu communication link. In other examples, UE 115 and base station 105 can communicate indirectly via communication link 135, which can be an example of a PC5 communication link. For example, wireless communication system 100 can support NR-side link communication between two or more peer devices. In such examples of PC5 communication, UE 115 can communicate with base station 105 via a relay node, which can be another UE 115.

[0079] In some aspects, the link quality of the communication link associated with UE 115 (such as communication link 125 or communication link 135) may degrade, and in some examples, UE 115 may participate in a handover process from base station 105 or source relay node to target base station or target relay node. For example, in an example where UE 115 initially communicates directly with base station 105 via communication link 125 and the link quality of communication link 125 degrades (e.g., falls below a threshold link quality), UE 115 may participate in a handover process from base station 105 to target relay node to improve the overall link quality between UE 115 and base station 105 or different base stations 105. Alternatively, in an example where UE 115 initially communicates indirectly with base station 105 via communication link 135 through a source relay node and the link quality of communication link 135 deteriorates (e.g., falls below a threshold link quality), UE 115 may participate in a handover process from the source relay node to the target relay node to improve the overall link quality between UE 115 and base station 105 (or a different base station 105).

[0080] In some examples, this handover process to a relay node can be a downlink-driven handover process, where one or more relay nodes can send reference signals to UE 115, and UE 115 can measure the signal strength associated with each reference signal received from the relay nodes to determine which relay node to establish a connection with. In other examples, this handover process to a relay node can be an uplink-driven handover process, where UE 115 can send reference signals to one or more relay nodes, the relay nodes can measure the signal strength associated with each reference signal received from UE 115, and UE 115 can determine which relay node to establish a connection with based on measurement reports received from the relay nodes.

[0081] Furthermore, in one or both examples, UE 115 can determine the service type supported by UE 115 and may attempt to establish a connection with a relay node or base station that supports the same service type as the one supported by UE 115. For example, UE 115 may determine the service type supported by one or more relay nodes, where UE 115 receives or transmits reference signals from or to the one or more relay nodes after transmitting measurement reports, establishing connections with the relay nodes, and reporting the corresponding capabilities; and UE 115 may attempt to connect to the relay nodes based on the determination that the relay nodes support the same service type as UE 115. Similarly, UE 115 may avoid attempting to connect to relay nodes that do not support the same service type as UE 115. In the example where UE 115 determines that a relay node does not support the same service type as UE 115, this determination of which relay nodes support the same service type as UE 115 after measuring reference signals and transmitting one or more measurement reports may result in inefficient resource usage. For example, UE 115 can measure a reference signal transmitted by a relay node and send a measurement report associated with the measured reference signal to the relay node, and then determine that the relay node does not support the same service type as UE 115. Thus, the resources used by UE 115 to send the measurement report are effectively wasted.

[0082] In some implementations of this disclosure, the transmitting device (e.g., a device transmitting a reference signal, such as UE 115 in an example of an uplink-dominated handover process, or a relay node or base station in an example of a downlink-dominated handover process) can indicate the supported service type via the reference signal. For example, in some examples, the transmitting device can transmit the reference signal via a first resource corresponding to or indicating the supported service type. In some other examples, the transmitting device can generate a sequence based on the supported service type and use the generated sequence to transmit the reference signal. In some still examples, the transmitting device can determine a cell ID associated with the supported service type and transmit the reference signal based on the determined cell ID.

[0083] Similarly, a receiving device (e.g., a device that receives a reference signal, such as a relay node or base station in an example of an uplink-dominated handover process, or UE 115 in an example of a downlink-dominated handover process) can receive the reference signal and determine the type of service supported by the transmitting device based on the received reference signal. In an example where the receiving device determines that the type of service supported by the transmitting device is the same as the type of service supported by the receiving device, the receiving device can measure the signal strength associated with the reference signal and send a measurement report to the transmitting device. Alternatively, in an example where the receiving device determines that the type of service supported by the transmitting device is different from the type of service supported by the receiving device, the receiving device can avoid measuring the signal strength associated with the reference signal and can similarly avoid sending a measurement report to the transmitting device.

[0084] Therefore, in examples where the receiving and transmitting devices support the same service type, the receiving device can send measurement reports to the transmitting device, and in examples where the receiving and transmitting devices do not support the same service type, the receiving device can avoid sending measurement reports to the transmitting device, which can lead to more efficient resource utilization of the receiving device. This more efficient resource utilization can in turn lead to greater capacity and higher achievable throughput in the wireless communication system 100.

[0085] Figure 2An example of a wireless communication system 200 is shown, illustrating reference signals associated with support services according to various aspects of this disclosure. In some examples, the wireless communication system 200 may implement aspects of the wireless communication system 100. The wireless communication system 200 may be illustrated as a system including base station 105-a, base station 105-b, UE 115-a, and relay node 210, which may be examples of corresponding devices described herein. In some examples, UE 115-a, which may be an example of a remote UE 115, may participate in a mobility process and attempt to establish a connection with base station 105-a or base station 105-b via relay node 210 based on transmitting or receiving reference signals 215 indicating the type of service supported.

[0086] For example, base stations 105-a and 105-b can support NR sidelinks and can also support indirect communication with UE 115-a via one or more relay nodes 210, which can be other UE 115, TRP, IAB nodes, or any other device capable of relaying wireless communication between UE 115 and base station 105. For example, base station 105-a can communicate with relay nodes 210-a and 210-b respectively via communication links 205-a and 205-b (which can be an example of a Uu link), and either relay node 210-a or relay node 210-b can establish a sidelink 220 (such as a PC5 link) with UE 115-a and communicate with UE 115-a via sidelink 220. Similarly, base station 105-b can communicate with relay node 210-c via communication link 205-c, with relay node 210-d via communication link 205-d, with relay node 210-e via communication link 205-e, or any one of relay node 210-c, relay node 210-d, or relay node 210-e can establish a side link 220 (such as a PC5 link) with UE 115-a and communicate with UE 115-a via side link 220.

[0087] In some examples, UE 115-a or base station 105 (base station 105-a or base station 105-b) may determine that the radio link quality of the current communication link between UE 115-a and base station 105 (which may be a direct communication link such as a Uu link, or an indirect link via relay node 210) has degraded below a threshold radio link quality, and may initiate a mobility procedure (such as a handover procedure) for UE 115-a. Based on the mobility procedure, UE 115-a may switch from a connection with base station 105-a or base station 105-b to a connection with relay node 210, from a connection with a first relay node 210 (source relay node 210) to a second relay node 210 (target relay node 210), or from a connection with a first base station 105 to a second base station 105. In any case, UE 115-a may send or receive reference signal 215 to or from one or more relay nodes 210 or base stations 105 to determine which relay node 210 or base station 105 provides the maximum signal strength for communication between UE 115-a and base station 105 (base station 105-a or base station 105-b). For example, UE 115-a may send or receive reference signal 215 to or from each (if not all) of relay nodes 210 or base stations 105, and in some examples, the receiving device (UE 115-a under downlink-dominated mobility or relay node 210 or base station 105 under uplink-dominated mobility) may measure the signal strength associated with each received reference signal and may send a measurement report associated with the received reference signal to the sending device (UE 115-a under uplink-dominated mobility or relay node 210 or base station 105 under downlink-dominated mobility).

[0088] In such an example, the receiving device might measure the signal strength associated with each received reference signal without knowing the service type supported by the transmitting device. This could lead to inefficient use of resources in examples where UE 115-a and relay node 210 or base station 105 support different service types. For example, one of UE 115-a, relay node 210, or base station 105 could measure a reference signal transmitted by one of the other devices, send a measurement report associated with the measured reference signal to the transmitting device, establish a connection with the transmitting device and report its capabilities, and in examples where UE 115-a and relay node 210 or base station 105 do not support the same service type, UE 115-a could avoid communicating with relay node 210 or base station 105 regardless of the measured signal strength. In other words, even in examples where the measured signal strength between UE115-a and relay node 210 or base station 105 is greater than a threshold signal strength, if UE115-a and relay node 210 or base station 105 do not support the same service type, then UE115-a and relay node 210 or base station 105 can avoid communicating with each other. Therefore, any processing power used by the receiving device to measure the reference signal 215 transmitted by the transmitting device, and any resources used by the receiving device to send the corresponding measurement report, may actually be wasted because: since UE115-a and relay node 210 or base station 105 do not support the same service type, the measured signal strength may not be considered during mobility operations.

[0089] In some implementations of this disclosure, the transmitting and receiving devices may support a reference signal 215 associated with a service type indicated by the transmitting device. Therefore, before measuring and reporting the signal strength associated with the reference signal 215, the receiving device may receive the reference signal 215 and determine the service type associated with the transmitting device. Thus, the receiving device can compare the service type indicated by the reference signal 215 with the service types supported by the receiving device and determine whether the two service types are the same or different. In examples where the two service types are different, the receiving device may avoid measuring and reporting the signal strength associated with the reference signal 215. Alternatively, in examples where the two service types are the same, the receiving device may measure the signal strength associated with the reference signal 215 and report it to the transmitting device.

[0090] For example, relay node 210-d can send reference signal 215 to UE 115-a (making relay node 210-d usable as a transmitting device and UE 115-a usable as a receiving device), and reference signal 215 can indicate a first service type supported by relay node 210-d (or by base station 105-b to which relay node 210-d is connected). Based on receiving reference signal 215, UE 115-a can determine that relay node 210-d supports the first service type and can compare the first service type with a second service type supported by UE 115-a. In some examples, UE 115-a can determine that the first service type and the second service type are different, and therefore can avoid measuring and reporting the signal strength associated with reference signal 215 to relay node 210-d. In some other examples, UE 115-a can determine that the first service type and the second service type are the same, and therefore can measure and report the signal strength associated with reference signal 215 to relay node 210-d.

[0091] Among other aspects, such a service-associated reference signal 215 can indicate the service type supported by the transmitting device. For example, different service types supported by UE 115-a, relay node 210, or base station 105 may include one or two of the eMBB service type, URLLC service type, or MTC service type, and the reference signal 215 may indicate one or more of the eMBB service type, URLLC service type, or MTC service type (depending on which service types the transmitting device supports, if not all three service types). In some aspects, different service types may be associated with different QoS constraints, which may include data rate, latency constraints, or battery power constraints (e.g., some service types may be associated with battery power constraints for higher or lower battery power levels), and the receiving device can determine whether it supports the same service type (and the same QoS constraints) as the transmitting device based on the receiving reference signal 215.

[0092] Alternatively, reference signal 215 may indicate the data traffic strength of communication between the transmitting and receiving devices. For example, the transmitting device may use reference signal 215 to indicate the strength level of data traffic that it expects to receive (in the example where the transmitting device is relay node 210) or that it expects to transmit (in the example where the transmitting device is UE 115-a). The receiving device may compare this indication of data traffic strength with the data rate or data traffic expectation at the receiving device to determine whether the amount of data it expects to transmit or receive is less than or greater than the data traffic strength indicated by reference signal 215.

[0093] For example, if UE 115-a receives a reference signal 215 from relay node 210-d indicating the data service strength expected or supported by relay node 210-d (such that relay node 210-d can transmit reference signal 215 while receiving data from UE 115-a), and if the indicated data service strength is greater than or equal to the data service expectation at UE 115-a (e.g., how much data UE 115-a expects to send to base station 105 via relay node 210-d), then UE 115-a can determine that relay node 210-d is capable of relaying the data service from UE 115-a. In such an example, UE 115-a can determine that UE 115-a and relay node 210-d support the same service type, and can measure and report the signal strength associated with reference signal 215 to relay node 210-d. Alternatively, if the indicated data service strength is less than the data service expectation of UE 115-a, UE 115-a can determine that relay node 210-d cannot relay data services from UE 115-a. In such an example, UE 115-a can determine that UE 115-a and relay node 210-d do not support the same service type and can avoid measuring and reporting the signal strength associated with reference signal 215.

[0094] Alternatively or concurrently, reference signal 215 may indicate the broadcast type supported by the transmitting device. For example, the transmitting device may use reference signal 215 to indicate one or more broadcast types under which the transmitting device can communicate or otherwise operate. In such an example, to determine whether to measure reference signal 215, the receiving device may compare this indication of one or more broadcast types supported by the transmitting device with one or more broadcast types that the receiving device can communicate with, or with one or more broadcast types that the receiving device expects or is suitable for the receiving device. The one or more broadcast types that the transmitting device may indicate via reference signal 215 may include any one or more of unicast broadcast types or modes, multicast broadcast types or modes, broadcast broadcast types or modes, or multicast broadcast types or modes, or any combination thereof.

[0095] Reference signal 215 may be any of the following: Synchronization Signal Block (SSB), Sounding Reference Signal (SRS), CSI-RS, Demodulation Reference Signal (DMRS) for the Physical Control Channel, DMRS for the Physical Data Channel, or a dedicated reference signal used to indicate the type of service. In some aspects, the transmitting device may use the same digital scheme as the active BWP to transmit reference signal 215. For example, the transmitting device may determine the active BWP for communication between the transmitting and receiving devices and may use the digital scheme associated with the active BWP to transmit reference signal 215.

[0096] Furthermore, in some examples, the transmitting device may determine the quasi-co-location (QCL) relationship or spatial filtering for reference signal 215 based on one or more other reference signals transmitted by the transmitting device. For example, in an example where the transmitting device is relay node 210 or base station 105 (in an example where the transmitting device is transmitting reference signal 215 in the downlink), the transmitting device may determine the QCL relationship associated with the SSB and use the same QCL relationship associated with the SSB to transmit reference signal 215. Alternatively, in an example where the transmitting device is UE 115-a (in an example where the transmitting device is transmitting reference signal 215 in the uplink), the transmitting device may determine the spatial filtering associated with a Physical Random Access Channel (PRACH) message or SRS and may use the same spatial filtering associated with the PRACH message or SRS to transmit reference signal 215. For example, the transmitting device may employ a type A QCL relationship (QCL-type A) associated with Doppler frequency shift, Doppler spread, average delay, and delay spread; a type B QCL relationship (QCL-type B) associated with Doppler frequency and Doppler spread; a type C QCL relationship (QCL-type C) associated with Doppler frequency and delay spread; or a type D QCL relationship (QCL-type D) associated with spatial reception parameters.

[0097] The transmitting device may indicate the type of service supported by the transmitting device (such as one or more of eMBB, URLLC, MTC, data strength, or broadcast type) via reference signal 215 in various ways. For example, the transmitting device may indicate the supported type of service through a sequence of reference signal 215 (in an example where reference signal 215 is sequence-based or DMRS-based) or an indication included in the payload of reference signal 215 (in an example where reference signal 215 includes DMRS and data). Reference Figure 3A and 3B Additional details are described in detail regarding how the transmitting device indicates the supported service type via reference signal 215.

[0098] Figure 3A and 3B Examples of signaling techniques 300 and 301 associated with reference signals supporting various aspects of this disclosure are shown. In some examples, signaling techniques 300 and 301 may be implemented to implement various aspects of wireless communication system 100 or wireless communication system 200. Transmitting device 305 and receiving device 310 may be examples of the devices described herein, including those referenced... Figure 1 and 2 The UE, base station, or relay node described. For example, transmitting device 305 may send a reference signal 315 to receiving device 310 indicating a service type supported by transmitting device 305, and in response to receiving reference signal 315 and determining the indicated service type, receiving device 310 may determine via measurement report 320 whether to measure and report the signal strength associated with reference signal 315. In some aspects, receiving device 310 may determine whether reference signal 315 indicates a service type supported by receiving device 310 once, such as during an initial attempt or first attempt for a measurement cell or relay.

[0099] like Figure 3A As shown, transmitting device 305-a can transmit reference signal 315 to receiving devices 310-a and 310-b. In some examples, transmitting device 305-a can transmit reference signal 315 to each of receiving devices 310-a and 310-b as part of an uplink-dominated handover process (e.g., transmitting device 305-a may be an example of a UE under mobility or handover, and receiving devices 310-a and 310-b may be examples of relay nodes or base stations). In some other examples, transmitting device 305-a can send reference signal 315 to each of receiving devices 310-a and 310-b as part of a downlink-dominated handover process (e.g., transmitting device 305-a may be an example of a relay node or base station, and receiving devices 310-a and 310-b may be examples of a UE under mobility or handover).

[0100] In any example, transmitting device 305-a may indicate a first service type supported by transmitting device 305-a via reference signal 315. In some implementations, transmitting device 305-a may indicate that it supports the first service type based on the time and frequency resources it uses to transmit the reference signal 315. For example, transmitting device 305-a may determine that a first resource (such as a first set of time and frequency resources) corresponds to the first service type supported by transmitting device 305-a, and therefore can transmit the reference signal 315 via the first resource. In such an implementation, receiving device 310-a and receiving device 310-b may each receive the reference signal 315 via the first resource, and determine that the transmitting device supports the first service type based on receiving the reference signal 315 via the first resource.

[0101] In some other implementations, the reference signal 315 can be a sequence-based reference signal (e.g., the transmitting device can use different scrambling sequences to transmit the reference signal 315), and the transmitting device 305-a can generate the first sequence based on the QoS ID associated with the first service type as part of the process for generating the scrambling sequence. The transmitting device 305-a can use the first sequence to transmit the reference signal 315 to indicate that the transmitting device 305-a supports the first service type. In such an implementation, the receiving devices 310-a and 310-b can each receive the reference signal 315, determine that the first sequence was used to transmit the reference signal 315, and determine that the transmitting device 305-a supports the first service type based on the determination that the reference signal 315 was transmitted using the first sequence.

[0102] In some other implementations, transmitting device 305-a can determine a first cell ID associated with the first service type and can transmit a reference signal 315 based on the first cell ID to indicate that transmitting device 305-a supports the first service type. In some aspects, the first cell ID may correspond to a first physical cell ID (PCI) or an example of a first physical cell identifier (PCI). In some examples, transmitting device 305-a can determine that the first service type is associated with or corresponds to a set of first cell IDs and can select a first cell ID from the set of first cell IDs. In such an implementation, receiving devices 310-a and 310-b can each receive the reference signal 315, determine the first cell ID associated with the reference signal 315, and determine that transmitting device 305-a supports the first service type based on the determination that the first cell ID is associated with the reference signal 315. In some examples, receiving devices 310-a and 310-b can determine that transmitting device 305-a supports the first service type based on the determination that the first cell ID is within the set of first cell IDs associated with or corresponding to the first service type. Alternatively, although described in the context of a cell ID such as PCI, the transmitting device 305-a may transmit the reference signal 315 based on any ID that corresponds to or maps to the first service type supported by the transmitting device 305-a.

[0103] In some other implementations, the reference signal 315 may be associated with both a control portion and a data portion (e.g., the reference signal may include both DMRS and data), and the transmitting device 305-a may include an indication of a first service type in the data portion of the reference signal 315. In such an implementation, receiving devices 310-a and 310-b may each receive the reference signal 315 and determine that the transmitting device 305-a supports the first service type based on the indication of the first service type in the data portion of the reference signal 315.

[0104] Based on receiving the reference signal 315 and determining that transmitting device 305-a supports the first service type, receiving devices 310-a and 310-b can respectively determine whether the first service type is also supported by receiving device 310-a or receiving device 310-b. For example, receiving device 310-a may also support the first service type, and based on receiving the reference signal 315 and determining that transmitting device 305-a supports the first service type, it can measure the signal strength associated with the reference signal 315 and send the measured signal strength to transmitting device 305-a via measurement report 320. Furthermore, for example, receiving device 310-b may support a second service type different from the first service type, and based on receiving the reference signal 315 and determining that transmitting device 305-a supports the first service type, it can avoid measuring the signal strength associated with the reference signal 315 and similarly avoid sending measurement report 320 to transmitting device 305-a.

[0105] In such an example, transmitting device 305-a can determine that receiving device 310-a is a candidate device for establishing a connection with it, and can establish a connection with receiving device 310-a if the measured signal strength indicated by measurement report 320 meets a threshold signal strength (e.g., exceeds a threshold, or is a higher signal strength compared to other signal strengths provided by other receiving devices 310). Similarly, transmitting device 305-a can avoid attempting to establish a connection with receiving device 310-b based on not receiving measurement report 320 from receiving device 310-b.

[0106] Furthermore, although described in the context of transmitting a single reference signal 315 to each of receiving devices 310-a and 310-b (e.g., transmitting a corresponding reference signal 315 from different receiving devices 310), transmitting device 305-a may repeat signaling technique 300 for each additional service type supported by transmitting device 305-a. For example, transmitting device 305-a may support a first service type and a second service type, and may transmit a reference signal 315 indicating the first service type and other reference signals 315 indicating the second service type. In such an example, receiving device 310-b may determine to measure the reference signal 315 indicating the second service type, while receiving device 310-a may determine to avoid measuring the reference signal 315 indicating the second service type. Similarly, receiving device 310-a or receiving device 310-b may support multiple service types without departing from the scope of this disclosure.

[0107] like Figure 3BAs shown, transmitting devices 305-b and 305-c may each transmit a reference signal 315 to receiving device 310-c. In some examples, transmitting devices 305-b and 305-c may each transmit the reference signal 315 to receiving device 310-c as part of a downlink-driven handover process (e.g., transmitting devices 305-b and 305-c may be examples of relay nodes or base stations, while receiving device 310-c may be an example of a UE under mobility or handover). In some other examples, transmitting devices 305-b and 305-c may transmit the reference signal 315 to receiving device 310-c as part of an uplink-driven handover process (e.g., transmitting devices 305-b and 305-c may be examples of a UE under mobility or handover, while receiving device 310-c may be an example of a relay node or base station).

[0108] In either example, transmitting device 305-b and transmitting device 305-c may each indicate the service type supported by transmitting device 305-b and transmitting device 305-c respectively via reference signal 315. For example, transmitting device 305-b may support a first service type and may transmit reference signal 315 indicating the first service type. Similarly, transmitting device 305-c may support a second service type and may transmit reference signal 315 indicating the second service type. Transmitting devices 305-b and transmitting device 305-c may use reference signals in the context of transmitting device 305-a. Figure 3A The described technology is similar to that used to indicate the first service type and the second service type, respectively, via the transmission of their respective reference signals 315.

[0109] For example, in some implementations, transmitting device 305-b can transmit reference signal 315 using a first resource (such as a first set of time and frequency resources) corresponding to a first service type supported by transmitting device 305-b. Similarly, transmitting device 305-c can transmit reference signal 315 using a second resource (such as a second set of time and frequency resources) corresponding to a second service type supported by transmitting device 305-c. In some other implementations, transmitting device 305-b can generate a first sequence based on a first QoS ID associated with the first service type, and can use the first sequence to transmit reference signal 315 to indicate that transmitting device 305-b supports the first service type. Similarly, transmitting device 305-c can generate a second sequence based on a second QoS ID associated with the second service type, and can use the second sequence to transmit reference signal 315 to indicate that transmitting device 305-b supports the second service type.

[0110] In some other implementations, transmitting device 305-b can determine a first cell ID associated with the first service type and can transmit a reference signal 315 based on the first cell ID to indicate that transmitting device 305-b supports the first service type. Similarly, transmitting device 305-c can determine a second cell ID associated with the second service type and can transmit a reference signal 315 based on the second cell ID to indicate that transmitting device 305-c supports the second service type. In some other implementations, transmitting devices 305-b and 305-c can explicitly indicate the first service type and the second service type in the payload portion of their respective reference signals 315.

[0111] Based on receiving two reference signals 315 and determining that transmitting device 305-b supports a first service type and transmitting device 305-c supports a second service type, receiving device 310-c can determine whether it supports the first or second service type. For example, receiving device 310-c may support the second service type, and based on receiving the reference signal 315 indicating the first service type from transmitting device 305-b, it can avoid measuring the signal strength associated with the reference signal 315 from transmitting device 305-b, and similarly avoid sending a measurement report 320 to transmitting device 305-b. Furthermore, for example, based on supporting the second service type and receiving the reference signal 315 indicating the second service type from transmitting device 305-c, receiving device 310-c can measure the signal strength associated with the reference signal 315 transmitted by transmitting device 305-c, and can send the measured signal strength to transmitting device 305-c via measurement report 320.

[0112] Furthermore, although described in the context of a single transmission of reference signal 315 from each of transmitting devices 305-b and 305-c (e.g., transmission of corresponding reference signal 315 from different transmitting devices 305), transmitting devices 305-b and 305-c may repeat signaling technique 301 for each additional service type supported by transmitting device 305-b or transmitting device 305-c. For example, transmitting device 305-a may support a first service type and a second service type, and may transmit a reference signal 315 indicating the first service type and other reference signals 315 indicating the second service type. Similarly, transmitting device 305-c may support a second service type and a third service type, and may transmit a reference signal indicating the second service type and other reference signals indicating the third service type. Additionally, in some examples, receiving device 310-c may support multiple service types without exceeding the scope of this disclosure.

[0113] For example, receiving device 310-c may support a first service type (which may be supported by transmitting device 305-a) and a second service type (which may be supported by transmitting devices 305-a and 305-b). In such an example, receiving device 310-c may measure a reference signal 315 transmitted by both transmitting device 305-b (a reference signal 315 indicating the first service type and other reference signals 315 indicating the second service type) and transmitting device 305-c (a reference signal 315 indicating the second service type). In such an example, the transmission of measurement reports 320 corresponding to the measured reference signals may be grouped based on the service type (or based on the corresponding QoS type). For example, receiving device 310-c may initially transmit a first measurement report group including measurement reports 320, wherein measurement reports 320 include the measured signal strength associated with the reference signal 315 indicating the first service type, and subsequently transmit a second measurement report group including measurement reports 320, wherein measurement reports 320 include the measured signal strength associated with the reference signal 315 indicating the second service type. For example, receiving device 310-a may send a first set of measurement reports including measurement reports 320 for UEs or cells 1 to K1 supporting a first service type (or a corresponding first QoS type), and may send a second set of measurement reports including measurement reports 320 for UEs or cells 1 to K2 supporting a second service type (or a corresponding second QoS type). Alternatively, in some examples, receiving device 310-c may simultaneously (e.g., in the same set) send measurement reports 320 associated with the first service type and measurement reports 320 associated with the second service type.

[0114] Alternatively or concurrently, the transmission of measurement reports 320 from receiving device 310-c can be managed separately or jointly based on the corresponding service type. For example, in an example where the transmission of measurement reports 320 from receiving device 310-c is managed separately, receiving device 310-c can determine, based on different triggering conditions, to trigger the transmission of a first measurement report 320 associated with a reference signal 315 indicating a first service type and to determine the transmission of a second measurement report 320 associated with a reference signal 315 indicating a second service type. For example, eMBB service type, URLLC service type, and MTC service type can be associated with different conditions for triggering the transmission associated with measurement reports 320. In some implementations, receiving device 310-c can trigger the transmission of measurement reports 320 based on reference signal measurement results such as thermal reference signal received power (RSRP) measurement results. In this implementation, the receiving device 310-c can trigger the transmission of the measurement report 320 associated with the reference signal associated with the URLLC based on a relatively high thermal RSRP threshold, and can trigger the transmission of the measurement report 320 associated with the reference signal associated with the eMBB based on a relatively low thermal RSRP threshold.

[0115] In an example where the transmission of measurement report 320 from receiving device 310-c is jointly managed, receiving device 310-c may determine, based on the same triggering conditions, to trigger the transmission of a first measurement report 320 associated with a reference signal 315 indicating a first service type and to determine the transmission of a second measurement report 320 associated with a reference signal 315 indicating a second service type. For example, the eMBB service type and the URLLC service type may be associated with the same conditions (such as the same hot RSRP threshold) used to trigger the transmission associated with the measurement report 320.

[0116] In some examples, transmitting device 305 and receiving device 310 may support signaling techniques 300 and 301 based on a mutually understood mapping or correspondence between a set of reference signal types and a set of service types. In some aspects, different reference signal types may involve reference signals 315 indicating different service types (e.g., reference signals 315 transmitted on different resources, reference signals 315 transmitted using different scrambling sequences, reference signals 315 transmitted based on different cell IDs, or reference signals 315 including different indications in the payload portion). For example, the mapping may indicate the correspondence between resources through which reference signals can be received and different service types, the correspondence between a set of scrambling sequences and different service types, or the correspondence between different sets of cell IDs and different service types (e.g., a first PCI set 900-949 may correspond to a first service type, and a second PCI set 950-999 may correspond to a second service type), etc. In some implementations, the base station or relay node may determine or configure the mapping between the set of reference signal types and the set of service types, and may send an indication of this mapping to the UE (mapping configuration). This mapping can be sent by a base station or relay node via broadcast or unicast to the UE in sidelink communication or to the UE in Uu communication using signaling.

[0117] The mapping between the set of reference signal types and the set of service types (or corresponding QoS constraints) can be complete (such that the entire set of service types is mapped to a reference signal type) or partial (such that a subset of service types is mapped to a reference signal type). In some aspects, the set of reference signal types may include a quantity of N reference signal types, and the set of service types may include a quantity of M service types. In some examples, the mapping between the set of reference signal types and the set of service types can be one-to-one, such that each different reference signal type maps to a different and unique service type (e.g., M = N). In some other examples, the mapping between the set of reference signal types and the set of service types can be many-to-one, such that each different reference signal type maps to a different group of service types (e.g., M > N). In such examples, each reference signal type may correspond to one or more service types, and if the receiving device supports any of the one or more service types indicated by the reference signal, the receiving device can determine, measure, and report the signal strength associated with the reference signal.

[0118] Figure 4An example of a processing flow 400 for a reference signal associated with a support service according to various aspects of this disclosure is shown. In some examples, processing flow 400 may implement aspects of wireless communication system 100 and wireless communication system 200. Processing flow 400 may illustrate communication between transmitting device 405 and receiving device 410, which may be examples of corresponding devices such as UEs, relay nodes, or base stations described herein. In some examples, transmitting device 405 may transmit a reference signal indicating a service type supported by transmitting device 405, and in response to receiving the reference signal, receiving device 410 may determine whether to measure the reference signal based on whether the receiving device also supports the indicated service type. Alternative examples of the processing flow may be implemented in which certain features are performed in a different order than described, or these features may not be performed at all. In some examples, operations may include additional features not mentioned below, or additional operations may be added.

[0119] At 415, transmitting device 405 and receiving device 410 can each determine their respective supported service types. Transmitting device 405 and receiving device 410 can each support one or more service types, and each service type can correspond to a different QoS. For example, at 415-a, transmitting device 405 can determine a service type supported by transmitting device 405 (such as a first service type) that corresponds to a QoS (such as a first QoS). Similarly, at 415-b, receiving device 410 can determine a service type supported by receiving device 410 (such as a second service type) that corresponds to a QoS (such as a second QoS).

[0120] At 420, in some implementations, transmitting device 405 may determine a mapping between a first set of service types and a second set of reference signal types. In some examples, the mapping may indicate how different reference signal types in the second set of reference signal types indicate different service types in the first set of service types. In some aspects, the first set of service types may include quantities of M service types, and the second set of reference signal types may include quantities of N reference signal types, where M may be equal to or greater than N.

[0121] At 425, in some implementations, transmitting device 405 may send an indication to receiving device 410 of the mapping between the first service type set and the second reference signal type set. In such an implementation, transmitting device 405 may act as a base station or relay node, while receiving device 410 may act as a UE.

[0122] At 430, transmitting device 405 may send a reference signal to receiving device 410 indicating a service type (such as a first service type) supported by transmitting device 405. In some examples, transmitting device 405 may indicate the first service type supported by transmitting device 405 based on a first resource corresponding to the first service type. In some other examples, transmitting device 405 may generate a first sequence (such as a first scrambling sequence) based on an ID associated with the first service type (such as a first QoS ID associated with the first service type) and may use the first sequence to transmit the reference signal. In some other examples, transmitting device 405 may determine a cell ID (such as a PCI) associated with the first service type and may transmit the reference signal based on the first cell ID. In such examples, transmitting device 405 may select the first cell ID from a set of cell IDs corresponding to the first service type. In some other examples, transmitting device 405 may include an indication of the first service type in the data portion of the reference signal (in an example where the reference signal has DMRS and data). In some aspects, transmitting device 405 may transmit a reference signal as part of a mobility or handover process or as part of a radio link measurement process. Further details relating to the transmission of the reference signal are described with reference to FIG3.

[0123] At 435, receiving device 410 can determine whether to measure the signal strength associated with the reference signal based on receiving a reference signal indicating a service type supported by transmitting device 405, and based on determining whether the service type supported by transmitting device 405 (such as a first service type) and the service type supported by receiving device 410 (such as a second service type) are the same service type. For example, receiving device 410 can compare the service type indicated by transmitting device 405 with the service type (or multiple service types) supported by receiving device 410, and can determine whether the supported service types are the same. In the example where receiving device 410 determines that the supported service types are the same, receiving device 410 can determine to measure the signal strength associated with the reference signal. Alternatively, in the example where receiving device 410 determines that the supported service types are different, receiving device 410 can avoid measuring the signal strength associated with the reference signal.

[0124] At 440, transmitting device 405 can monitor measurement reports from receiving device 410 based on a reference signal indicating the type of service supported by transmitting device 405.

[0125] At 445, in some implementations, receiving device 410 may send a measurement report to transmitting device 405. In some examples, receiving device 410 may send the measurement report based on determining that the service type supported by transmitting device 405 is the same as the service type supported by receiving device 410, and determining the measurement reference signal. In such an example, transmitting device 405 may receive the measurement report based on monitoring at 440. In some other implementations, receiving device 410 may determine that the service type supported by transmitting device 405 is a different service type from the service type supported by receiving device 410, and may avoid measuring the signal strength associated with the reference signal, and similarly avoid sending a measurement report at 445.

[0126] At 450, in some implementations, transmitting device 405 can establish a connection with receiving device 410 based on received measurement reports. For example, transmitting device 405 can determine the measured signal strength associated with a reference signal transmitted at 430, and can compare the measured signal strength at receiving device 410 with any other received measurement reports. In examples where the measured signal strength at receiving device 410 exceeds a threshold signal strength or the maximum measured signal strength (relative to one or more other reference signal measurements), transmitting device 405 can determine to establish a connection with receiving device 410 and complete a mobility or handover process.

[0127] Figure 5 A block diagram of a device 505 for reference signals associated with support services according to various aspects of this disclosure is shown. Device 505 may be an example of various aspects of a transmitting or receiving device. Device 505 may include a receiver 510, a communication manager 515, and a transmitter 520. The communication manager 515 may be implemented, at least in part, by one or both of a modem and a processor. Each of these components may communicate with each other (e.g., via one or more buses).

[0128] Receiver 510 can receive information such as packets, user data, or control information associated with various information channels (e.g., control channel information, data channel information, and information related to the technology of reference signals associated with measurement services). This information can be transmitted to other components of device 505. Receiver 510 can be a reference... Figure 8 Examples of various aspects of the transceiver 820 are described. The receiver 510 can utilize a single antenna or a set of antennas.

[0129] In some implementations (such as in which device 505 is used as a transmitting device), communication manager 515 may determine a first service type supported by the transmitting device, the first service type corresponding to a first QoS, send a reference signal indicating the first service type to the receiving device, and monitor measurement reports from the receiving device based on sending the reference signal indicating the first service type.

[0130] Alternatively, the communication manager 515 may send a reference signal to the receiving device indicating a first service type supported by the sending device, the first service type corresponding to a first QoS, monitor measurement reports from the receiving device based on sending the reference signal indicating the first service type, and selectively establish a connection with the receiving device based on whether a measurement report is received from the receiving device during the monitoring period.

[0131] In some other implementations (such as in which device 505 is used as a receiving device), communication manager 515 may determine a first service type supported by the receiving device, the first service type corresponding to a first QoS, receive a reference signal indicating a second service type from the transmitting device, determine whether to measure the signal strength associated with the reference signal based on receiving the reference signal indicating the second service type and based on determining whether the first service type and the second service type are the same service type, and communicate with the transmitting device or a second transmitting device based on determining whether to measure the signal strength associated with the reference signal.

[0134] In some examples, the communication manager 515 may be implemented as an integrated circuit or chipset for a mobile device modem, and the receiver 510 and transmitter 520 may be implemented as analog components (e.g., amplifiers, filters, antennas) coupled to the mobile device modem to enable wireless transmission and reception over one or more frequency bands.

[0135] The communication manager 515 can be implemented to achieve one or more potential advantages. In some implementations, such as in which device 505 is used as a receiving device, the communication manager 515 can avoid measuring and reporting signal strength associated with reference signaling indicating a service type not supported by the communication manager 515. Therefore, the communication manager 515 can prevent the performance of unnecessary processing tasks associated with measurement and reporting, which can improve power saving and increase battery life at device 505.

[0142] Alternatively, the reference signal component 625 may receive a reference signal indicating a first service type from the transmitting device. The measurement component 635 may measure the signal strength associated with the reference signal based on receiving the reference signal indicating the first service type and based on the fact that the first service type is the same as a second service type supported by the receiving device corresponding to the first QoS. The communication component 640 may communicate with the transmitting device or a second transmitting device based on the measured signal strength associated with the reference signal.

[0143] Transmitter 645 can transmit signals generated by other components of device 605. In some examples, transmitter 645 can be co-located with receiver 610 in a transceiver assembly. For example, transmitter 645 can be a reference... Figure 8 Examples of various aspects of the transceiver 820 are described. The transmitter 645 can utilize a single antenna or a set of antennas.

[0144] Figure 7A block diagram of a communication manager 705 for reference signals associated with support services according to various aspects of this disclosure is shown. Each of these components may communicate with each other directly or indirectly (e.g., via one or more buses).

[0145] In some implementations, the communication manager 705 can operate as part of the transmitting device.

[0146] Service type component 710 can determine a first service type supported by the transmitting device, the first service type corresponding to a first QoS. In some examples, service type component 710 can determine a second service type supported by the transmitting device, the second service type corresponding to a second QoS. In some examples, service type component 710 can determine that the first service type and the second service type are not the same service type.

[0147] In some examples, the first service type includes eMBB, URLLC, or MTC service types. In some examples, the first service type is associated with data rate, latency constraints, or battery power constraints. In some examples, cell ID component 730 can determine a set of cell IDs corresponding to the first service type. In some examples, cell ID component 730 can select a first cell ID from the set of cell IDs.

[0152] Mapping component 735 can determine the mapping between a first set of service types and a second set of reference signal types. In some examples, mapping component 735 can send an indication to the receiving device of the mapping between the first set of service types and the second set of reference signal types. In some examples, different reference signal types in the second set of reference signal types indicate different service types in the first set of service types, and each of the different service types in the first set of service types is associated with a different QoS.

[0158] In some examples, the first or second service type includes eMBB, URLLC, or MTC service types. In some examples, the first or second service type is associated with data rate, latency constraints, battery power constraints, or broadcast type. [0159] In some examples, the reference signal component 715 may receive a reference signal indicating a second type of service from a transmitting device. In some examples, the reference signal component 715 may receive a second reference signal indicating a third type of service from a second transmitting device. In some examples, the reference signal component 715 may determine that the reference signal was received through a first resource, which corresponds to the second type of service.

[0160] In some examples, the reference signal component 715 may receive a reference signal indicating that the second type of service is part of a radio link measurement process. In some examples, the measurement reporting component 720 may send a second measurement report associated with a third service type from a second measurement report group to the second transmitting device.

[0162] Measurement component 755 can determine whether to measure the signal strength associated with the reference signal based on receiving a reference signal indicating a second service type and based on determining whether the first service type and the second service type are the same service type. In some examples, measurement component 755 can measure the signal strength associated with the reference signal based on determining that the first service type and the second service type are the same service type. In some examples, measurement component 755 can avoid measuring the signal strength associated with the reference signal based on determining that the first service type and the second service type are not the same service type. In some examples, measurement component 755 can measure the second signal strength associated with the second reference signal based on determining that the first service type and the third service type are the same service type.

[0165] In some examples, the mapping component 735 may receive from the transmitting device an indication of the mapping between a first set of service types and a second set of reference signal types. In some examples, different reference signal types in the second set of reference signal types indicate different service types in the first set of service types, and each of the different service types in the first set of service types is associated with a different QoS.

[0166] The sequence component 765 can determine a first sequence to be used to transmit a reference signal, the first sequence corresponding to the second service type.
