Abstract
Description
[0001] This application is a divisional application of application number 201911345410.9 of the invention patent application filed on December 19, 2014, with application number 201480076062.9, PCT international application number PCT / NZ2014 / 050024, and entitled "Humidification System Connection".
[0002] Incorporate any priority claim by reference
[0003] All applications whose foreign or domestic priority claims are identified in the application data pages filed with this application are hereby incorporated by reference in accordance with 37 CFR 1.57. This application claims priority to U.S. Provisional Application No. 61 / 919485, filed December 20, 2013, and U.S. Provisional Application No. 62 / 059339, filed October 3, 2014, each of which is incorporated herein by reference in its entirety. Technical Field
[0004] This invention relates to a method or apparatus for providing a user with heated and / or humidified gas, specifically breathing gas. More specifically, this disclosure relates to devices and techniques for providing or implementing connections between components of a humidification system. The disclosed devices and techniques can be used in systems such as positive airway pressure (PAP), ventilators, anesthesia, ventilation machines, and blowing systems to provide gas to and / or remove gas from a patient. Background Technology
[0005] Humidification systems have been designed to deliver heated and / or humidified gases for various medical procedures, including respiratory therapy and laparoscopy. These systems can be configured to control temperature, humidity, and flow rate.
[0006] Humidification systems also include medical circuits that comprise different components for delivering heated and / or humidified gas to or from the patient. For example, in some breathing circuits, such as PAP or assisted breathing circuits, the gas inhaled by the patient is delivered from a heated humidifier through an inhalation tube. As another example, tubing can deliver humidified gas (typically CO2) into the abdominal cavity in a blowing circuit. This can help prevent the patient's internal organs from drying out or becoming dehydrated and can reduce the amount of time required for postoperative recovery. Unheated tubing allows a significant amount of heat to be lost to natural cooling. This cooling can cause unwanted condensation or a "rain-wash effect" to form along the length of the tubing that delivers warm, humidified air. Heater leads can extend along at least a portion of the tubing to form a circuit for preventing or at least reducing condensation that forms therein.
[0007] Although the prior arrangements have provided the desired treatment, there is still a need for devices that allow for easier connection and / or disconnection of humidification system components. Therefore, the objective of certain features, aspects, and advantages disclosed herein is to overcome or improve one or more disadvantages of the prior art or at least to provide the public with a useful alternative. Summary of the Invention
[0008] According to a first aspect of this disclosure, a loop connector for a humidification system is provided, the humidification system including a base unit and a humidification chamber configured to engage with the base unit, the loop connector including: an inlet configured to provide a fluid connection to an outlet of the humidification chamber for receiving heated and / or humidified gas from the humidification chamber; an outlet configured to provide a fluid connection to a conduit for guiding the heated and / or humidified gas to or from a patient or other person; and electrical terminals. Electrical terminals are configured to provide an electrical connection to electrical terminals associated with the base unit, wherein the circuit connector is configured to make a releasable and lockable connection to the outlet of the humidification chamber, thereby providing the fluid connection from the inlet of the circuit connector to the outlet of the humidification chamber, such that when the humidification chamber is engaged with the base unit and the circuit connector is connected to the outlet of the humidification chamber, the circuit connector also provides the electrical connection from the electrical terminals of the circuit connector to the electrical terminals associated with the base unit.

In some such configurations, the two contact pads for the heater leads are longer than the two contact pads for the sensor leads and the two contact pads for identification. In some such configurations, these contact pads are formed on a circuit board, and the printed circuit board is supported by an outer support surface. In some such configurations, the outer support surface is wider at the distal end than at the proximal end.

[0103] Certain embodiments and examples of humidification systems and / or devices and / or methods are described herein. Those skilled in the art will understand that the invention is not limited to the specific embodiments and / or uses disclosed herein, as well as obvious modifications and equivalents thereof. Therefore, it is intended that the scope of the invention disclosed herein should not be limited to any particular embodiment described herein.
[0104] Humidification system
[0105] To understand this disclosure in more detail, please refer first to... Figure 1 The illustration shows an exemplary breathing circuit comprising one or more medical tubes. Such a breathing circuit may be a continuous, variable, or bi-level positive airway pressure (PAP) system or another form of respiratory therapy.
[0106] It can be done as follows: Figure 1 Gas is delivered in the breathing circuit. Dry or relatively dry gas is passed from gas source 105 to humidifier 107, which humidifies the dry gas. Gas source 105 may be, for example, a ventilator or a blower. Humidifier 107 is connected via port 111 to end 109 of inspiratory tube 103, thereby supplying humidified gas to inspiratory tube 103, which may be configured to deliver breathing gas to the patient. This gas flows through inspiratory tube 103 to Y-tube 113, and then through patient interface 115 connected to Y-tube 113 to patient 101. Exhalation tube 117 is also connected via Y-tube 113 to patient interface 115 and may be configured to move exhaled gas away from patient 101. Here, exhalation tube 117 returns exhaled gas from patient 101 to gas source 105.
[0107] In this example, dry or relatively dry gas enters the gas source 105 through vent 119. Fan 121 can improve the airflow into the gas source 105 by drawing air or other gases through vent 119. For example, the fan 121 can be a variable speed fan, with an electronic controller 123 controlling the fan speed. Specifically, the function of the electronic controller 123 can be controlled by an electronic master controller 125 in response to inputs to the master controller 125 and predetermined desired values (preset values) of pressure or fan speed set by the user via dial 127.
[0108] The humidifier 107 includes a humidification chamber 129 containing a volume of water 130 or other suitable humidifying liquid. The humidification chamber 129 is removable from the humidifier 107 after use, allowing for easier sterilization or disposal. The main body of the humidification chamber 129 may be formed of non-conductive glass or plastic material, but it may also include conductive components. For example, the humidification chamber 129 may include a highly thermally conductive base (e.g., an aluminum base) that contacts or is associated with the heater plate 131 on the humidifier 107.
[0109] The humidifier 107 may also include multiple electronic controls. In this example, the humidifier 107 includes an electronic, analog, or digital main controller 125. The main controller 125 may be a microprocessor-based controller that executes computer software commands stored in associated memory. In response to humidity or temperature values, provided, for example, via user interface 133, and other inputs, the main controller 125 determines when (or at what level) to power the heater plate 131 to heat the water 130 within the humidification chamber 129.
[0110] Any suitable patient interface can be used. "Patient interface" is a broad term and is given its general and conventional meaning to those skilled in the art (that is, it is not limited to a specific or custom meaning), and includes, but is not limited to, masks (e.g., endotracheal masks, face masks, and nasal masks), cannulas, and nasal pillows. Temperature probe 135 can be connected to the inspiratory tube 103 near the Y-tube 113, or directly to the Y-tube 113 or patient interface 115. Temperature probe 135 monitors the temperature of the airflow near or at the patient interface 115. A heating filament (not shown) can be used to adjust the temperature of the patient interface 115, the Y-tube 113, and / or the inspiratory tube 103 to raise the temperature of the airflow above its saturation temperature, thereby reducing the chance of unwanted condensation.
[0111] exist Figure 1In this embodiment, exhaled air is returned from the patient interface 115 to the gas source 105 via an exhalation tube 117. The exhalation tube 117 may have a temperature probe and / or heating filament integrated therein to reduce the chance of condensation (as described above with respect to the inhalation tube 103). Furthermore, the exhalation tube 117 does not need to return exhaled air to the gas source 105. Alternatively, exhaled air may be directly delivered to the ambient environment or to other assistive devices, such as an air shuffler / filter (not shown). In some embodiments, the exhalation tube 117 is omitted entirely.
[0112] Figure 1 The system can be readily adapted for other applications, including but not limited to supplying heated and / or humidified airflow to users or patients, such as laparoscopy and ventilation. These applications may use alternative gases, operating parameters (e.g., flow rate, pressure, temperature, or humidity), and patient interfaces.
[0113] The exemplary embodiments described herein can be configured to be incorporated in Figure 1 In systems or similar systems, and further description should be combined with information about Figure 1 Read the disclosed information.
[0114] Figure 2A and Figure 2B A humidification device 1 is shown according to an exemplary embodiment. Figure 2B Some parts have been removed to show additional details. The device includes a loop connector 2 that pneumatically connects a medical tube or catheter 3 to the outlet 15 of the humidification chamber 4. Figure 4 As shown, when the humidification chamber 4 is mounted on the base unit 5, the outlet 15 may terminate at a substantially horizontal portion angled away from the base unit 5. The conduit 3 may be an inspiratory branch of the patient circuit, i.e., configured to deliver humidifying gas to the user, such as via a patient interface (not shown). The inlet 8 of the humidification chamber 4 is configured to be fluidly connected to a pressurized gas source. This inlet may be located distal to the humidification device 1 or form an integral part of the humidification device, although the inlet may be detachable from the humidification device. For example, the inlet 8 may be pneumatically coupled to a motorized fan that drives gas through the inlet 8, the motorized fan being located in or associated with the base unit 5.
[0115] The loop connector 2 further facilitates an electrical connection to the base unit 5 via the connector 6. The connector 6 may be integrally formed with the base unit 5, or it may be a separate, replaceable module or clamp. The ability to change the module can advantageously enable the use of different forms of humidification chambers and / or loop connectors. Additionally or alternatively, the module can be modified to alter the operation of the humidification device 1 by including control circuitry. The conduit 3 may include one or more resistive heating wires that provide heating to the gas flowing through it and / or sensor wires that electrically or otherwise facilitate the transmission of signals relating to one or more parameters of the system. Therefore, the terms "electrical connection" and "pneumatic connection" are used separately and should not be interpreted in a limiting manner. For example, optical signals can be transmitted via optical fibers. Thus, the loop connector 2 can more generally connect the conduit 3 (and any associated peripheral devices, such as sensors) to the base unit 5 in a communicative and / or electrical manner, such as via the connector 6.
[0116] The circuit connector 2 may include at least one button or switch 10, which can be manually pressed to disconnect the circuit connector 2 (and therefore the conduit 3) from the humidification chamber 4. As will be understood herein, the circuit connector 2 and the outlet 15 of the humidification chamber 4 can be lockably engaged when connected therebetween, wherein the at least one button or switch 10 is subsequently used to allow the circuit connector 2 to disconnect from the humidification chamber 4. Any suitable connection may be used.
[0117] The base unit 5 further includes a panel 9, which can be used to mount a user display and / or controls. For example, various dials, switches, and other input devices can be used to control the operation of the device. Alternatively, a touchscreen display can be used. This user display can show system parameters, warnings in case of any errors or malfunctions, or prompts requiring user intervention. When using a touchscreen display, the display can be used to at least partially present information to the user and receive input from the user.
[0118] like Figure 3As shown, the base unit 5 includes a heater plate 11, which is controllably powered to heat the contents of the humidification chamber 4. For faster heating, the humidification chamber 4 may include a base plate 19 formed of a highly thermally conductive material. Additionally, to ensure a good connection between the base plate 19 and the heater plate 11 of the humidification chamber 4, the two surfaces may be offset towards each other. For example, according to one embodiment, a lip 12 extends outward from or adjacent to the base plate 19 of the humidification chamber 4 and is received below the protruding rim 13 of the base unit 5 when the humidification chamber 4 is slid onto the base unit 5. The heater plate 11 may be spring-loaded, such that the heater plate 11 is pushed upward into the base plate 19 of the humidification chamber 4, wherein the lip 12 acts against the protruding rim 13.
[0119] Refer again Figure 2A The base unit 5 further includes a spring-loaded latch 14. To engage the humidifying chamber 4 with the base unit 5, the latch 14 is first pressed down, allowing the lip 12 to be received below the protruding rim 13. This is conveniently performed by positioning the base plate 19 of the humidifying chamber 4 on the latch 14 and pressing the humidifying chamber 4 downward and subsequently toward the rear of the base unit 5. When the humidifying chamber 4 is fully engaged with the base unit 5, the latch 14 can rise and act as a mechanical stop to prevent the humidifying chamber 4 from being unintentionally removed from the base unit 5. To disengage the humidifying chamber 4 from the base unit 5, the latch 14 must first be pressed down, and then the humidifying chamber 4 is pulled away from the base unit 5 by sliding the base plate 19 of the humidifying chamber 4 across the surface of the heater plate 11 and subsequently onto the latch 14. As shown in the figure, the humidification chamber 4 may include grip portions 16, which make it easier for the user to hold the humidification chamber 4 when pulling it away from the base unit 5.
[0120] refer to Figure 4The outlet 15 of the humidifying chamber 4 can be oriented such that, at least at the end of the outlet 15 remote from the humidifying chamber 4, it is substantially parallel to the direction of movement of the humidifying chamber 4 as it slides onto or off the base unit 5. By configuring the device in this way, it is possible to assemble the loop connector 2, the humidifying chamber 4, and the base unit 5 by: engaging the humidifying chamber 4 to the base unit 5 and then attaching the loop connector 2 to the outlet 15 of the humidifying chamber 4; or attaching the loop connector 2 to the outlet 15 of the humidifying chamber 4 and then engaging the humidifying chamber 4 to the base unit 5. Because the loop connector 2 and the outlet 15 are configured to be lockably engaged, the latter assembly option is even easier to follow, preventing the loop connector 2 from separating from the outlet 15 when the humidifying chamber 4 is slid onto the base unit 5. Additionally, similar to the latter assembly option, the conduit 3 and the humidifying chamber 4 can be pre-assembled for shipment, thereby eliminating a step from the assembly process. Regardless of the assembly order, electrical or other connections from conduit 3 and / or loop connector 2 to connector 6 and / or base unit 5 can be made when loop connector 2 engages connector 6.
[0121] Similarly, disassembly can be performed in a different order. More specifically, the loop connector 2 can be removed from the outlet 15 of the humidification chamber 4 first, followed by the removal of the humidification chamber 4 from the base unit 5. Alternatively, the humidification chamber 4 can be removed from the base unit 5 while the loop connector 2 is still attached to the outlet 15 of the humidification chamber 4. The latter option can advantageously help reduce the possibility of liquid spillage during the removal and disposal of these consumables from the base unit 5.
[0122] Guiding features
[0123] To facilitate engagement of the loop connector 2, humidification chamber 4, and base unit 5 during assembly, various guides can be provided to control their orientation and / or position relative to each other. More specifically, to allow the humidification chamber 4 to slide into engagement with the base unit 5 and connector 6, different orientation features can be provided on the humidification chamber 4 and / or connector 6, thereby enabling quick and easy alignment of these components, particularly when the loop connector 2 is attached to the outlet 15. For example, the humidification chamber 4 can be fully engaged with the base unit 5, thus enabling the loop connector 2 to also engage with the connector 6. As disclosed herein, the loop connector 2 and / or connector 6 may additionally or alternatively include orientation features that help ensure the loop connector 2 is connected to the humidification chamber 4 such that the loop connector 2 is properly oriented to allow easy connection of the loop connector 2 and the humidification chamber 4 to the base unit 5 and connector 6.
[0124] Figures 5A to 5FDifferent alternative views for an exemplary embodiment of the humidification chamber 4. Figures 6A to 6C This is an alternative view of connector 6. (See attached image.) Figures 5A to 5F As shown, the humidification chamber 4 may include a nose-shaped portion 201 and guide wings 202. These features are configured to engage correspondingly with the contoured recess 301 and slot 302 in the connector 6 (see [link]). Figures 6A to 6C ).
[0125] Further disclosure will refer to a coordinate system in which the Z-axis extends vertically from the heater plate 11, the Y-axis is aligned in the engagement direction of the humidification chamber 4 and the base unit 5, and the X-axis is perpendicular to both the Z-axis and the Y-axis. Furthermore, the width of the nose-shaped portion 201 is defined along the X-axis, the length of the nose-shaped portion 201 is defined along the Y-axis, and the height of the nose-shaped portion 201 is defined along the Z-axis.
[0126] In one embodiment, the nose-shaped portion 201 has a smaller width at its first end than at its second end, and the first end of the nose-shaped portion 201 is configured to be initially received in the recess 301. This provides some tolerance regarding the position of the humidifying chamber 4 along the X-axis (and rotationally about the Z-axis) so that the nose-shaped portion 201 is initially received in the recess 301. Furthermore, because the spacing or tolerance between the nose-shaped portion 201 and the recess 301 is smaller, thereby reducing the range of relative movement, the wider second end of the nose-shaped portion 201 can be used to refine the position of the nose-shaped portion 201 (and therefore the humidifying chamber 4) along the X-axis (and rotationally about the Z-axis).
[0127] In the illustrated embodiment, the recess 301 is configured such that the inclined sidewalls of the nose-shaped portion 201 abut against the corresponding and similarly inclined sidewalls of the recess 301. This configuration of the sidewalls of the nose-shaped portion 201 and the sidewalls of the recess 301 controls the position of the humidification chamber 4 not only along the X-axis but also rotationally about the Y-axis and / or Z-axis, because movement of the nose-shaped portion 201 along the X-axis is substantially suppressed in at least two positions along the length of the nose-shaped portion 201 and also along the height of the nose-shaped portion 201.
[0128] However, some of these benefits can be achieved when the sidewalls of the nose portion 201 do not adjoin the sidewalls of the recess 301. For example, if the nose portion 201 is configured as shown, but the sidewalls of the recess 301 are substantially parallel along their length and spaced apart by a distance greater than the maximum width of the nose portion 201 at its second end, then this configuration will still assist in the initial insertion of the nose portion 201 into the recess 301 and at least significantly constrain the movement of the nose portion 201 along the X-axis at its second end, although some rotational movement about the Z-axis is possible. A similar result is achieved if the sidewalls of the nose portion 201 are substantially parallel and the recess 301 narrows along its length along the Y-axis from its opening to a width at least as large as the width of the nose portion 201.
[0129] The nose-shaped portion 201 combined with the recess 301 may additionally or alternatively provide tolerances along at least the Z-axis with respect to the initial placement of the humidification chamber 4. Furthermore, according to a particular embodiment, the nose-shaped portion 201 and the recess 301 may cooperate to refine the position of the humidification chamber 4 along the Z-axis and / or rotatably about the X-axis and / or Y-axis.
[0130] This tolerance is provided in a manner similar to the tolerance in the X direction. For example... Figure 5C As shown, the height of the nose-shaped portion 201 is lower at the first end than at the second end, where this height is measured from the base plate 19. Figure 6B As shown, the recess 301 has a similar profile, allowing for easy initial insertion followed by refinement of its position along the Z-axis as the humidification chamber 4 is further inserted to fully engage with the base unit 5. Similar to the description of tolerances along the width direction of the X-axis, the opposing wall of the generally top-down side of the recess 301 may not abut against the top-up side of the nose-shaped portion 201 along its length. For example, one could always be oriented substantially parallel to the heater plate 11, but with similar disadvantages as those previously mentioned. More specifically, while facilitating initial insertion, the degree of refinement of the position of the humidification chamber 4 along the Z-axis may be reduced, and there may be less control to ensure that the base plate 19 is parallel to the heater plate 11.
[0131] In some embodiments, the engagement of the guide wings 202 with the slot 302 provides sufficient movement restriction to reduce the need for aligning and engaging the base plate 19 with the heater plate 11 via the protruding rim 13. In some configurations, the base unit 5 may not include the protruding rim 13. In some embodiments, the nose portion 201 may be provided without these guide wings 202. However, the use of these guide wings 202 is preferred, at least in embodiments where the heater plate 11 is spring-mounted to improve control over positioning the humidification chamber 4 along at least the Z-axis and / or to ensure that the heater plate 11 is substantially parallel to the base plate 19. Conversely, these guide wings 202 may be provided without the nose portion 201, but this configuration is less preferred because the nose portion 201 can more easily assist in the initial positioning of the humidification chamber 4 and also perform its initial coarse adjustment to refine the position, while these guide wings 202 can then be used to further refine the position of the humidification chamber 4 along the Z-axis and control the orientation about at least the X and Y axes. With the nose-shaped portion 201 omitted, these guide wings 202 can be mounted, for example, on a substantially rigid mounting extending vertically from the humidification chamber 4, such that the guide wings 202 extend laterally from the mounting. This substantially rigid mounting can be substantially planar, having an overall T-shaped cross-section. However, to improve strength and rigidity, the mounting can include a more robust element with a certain thickness (but this thickness generally does not allow the mounting to directly contact the connector 6).
[0132] For example, such as Figure 5B As shown, these guide wings 202 do not extend directly to the first end of the nose-shaped portion 201. Instead, they are spaced apart from the first end, thereby enabling an initial engagement between the nose-shaped portion 201 and the recess 301 without the guide wings 202 engaging with the slots 302. The engagement of the guide wings with the slots occurs only after the relative positions between the humidification chamber 4 and the base unit 5 have been refined, and the engagement continues between the two.
[0133] As will be understood, alternative guide devices can be used. For example, the nose-shaped portion 201 can be in the form of a contoured recess and vice versa, such that the contoured recess of the humidification chamber 4 receives the nose-shaped portion or protrusion of the connector 6. Similarly, these guide wings 202 can be replaced by recesses that receive wings or other protrusions on the connector 6. Other arrangements that perform the same function can also be used.
[0134] Additionally from Figure 7 Clearly visible and as Figure 10A , Figure 10D and Figure 10EAs shown more clearly, the loop connector 2 may include a cutout 403 configured to receive a substantially vertical portion of the outlet 15. This also helps ensure that the loop connector 2 is correctly oriented when inserted into the end of the outlet 15, as full insertion is only possible with proper alignment. Furthermore, this arrangement provides a stronger connection and allows for electrical connection, as will be described below. Additionally, at least the initial portion of the cutout 403 may be angled or bent, such that the first portion of the vertical portion of the outlet 15 received by the cutout 403 is wider than the outlet 15, thus providing some tolerance regarding the required initial alignment. However, this may not be required in cases where the outlet 15 has a generally circular cross-section, as some tolerances are inherently provided due to the circular shape of the outlet 15.
[0135] refer to Figure 8A and Figure 8C The loop connector 2 may additionally or alternatively include an angled cutout 408 that receives a similarly angled protrusion 409 on the outlet 15. Additionally, the angled cutout serves to achieve and secure the orientation of the loop connector 2 and the outlet 15 relative to each other.
[0136] Alternatively, the guiding device may be incorporated into the base plate 19 of the heater plate 11 and / or the humidification chamber 4. For example, the ridge in the heater plate 11 may be configured to be received in a slot in the base plate 19 of the humidification chamber 4, or vice versa.
[0137] circuit connector
[0138] exist Figure 2A , Figure 2B , Figure 6C and Figure 7 The image shows a first embodiment of the loop connector 2. The first end of the loop connector 2 (see image) Figure 2B It is configured to receive and pneumatically seal the end of the breathing tube or catheter 501 (see...). Figure 6C ).
[0139] The loop connector 2 may include a body 502 and an extension 504. The interior of the body 502 defines a channel that connects the conduit 501 to a horizontal portion of the outlet 15 to provide a continuous flow path during assembly. Seals (e.g., O-rings, double O-rings, or lip seals) may be disposed between contact surfaces between the interior of the body 502 and the exterior of the outlet 15 to prevent gas leakage during delivery.
[0140] The connector 6 is shown as including a shield 505 that receives and covers the extension 504. This helps reduce or eliminate the possibility of any spilled liquid coming into contact with the loop connector 2 and also serves to strengthen and reinforce the connection. Furthermore, the shield 505 assists in engaging the loop connector 2 with the outlet 15 of the humidification chamber 4 and / or with the base unit 5. More specifically, the shield 505 provides a visual indication of where the loop connector 2 should be positioned. Additionally, the shield 505 can provide some physical control over the positioning of the loop connector 2. For example, in the illustrated embodiment, at least the extension 504 of the loop connector 2 is received against the wall of the shield 505 opposite the heater plate 11. This may specifically occur if the heater plate 11 is spring-mounted to bias the heater plate 11 toward the shield 505. Thus, at least the height of the loop connector 2 (i.e., along the Z-axis) can be controlled. Providing the shield 505 with curved opposing walls assists in positioning the loop connector 2 along the X-axis, as the loop connector 2 will be advanced toward the center of the arc formed by the shield 505. The physical positioning function of the shield 505 is further improved by defining the shield 505 with a wall that at least partially encloses the loop connector 2, so as to control not only the upper limit of the position of the loop connector 2 but also its actual position.
[0141] Figures 8A to 8C An embodiment of a lockable but releasable connection between the loop connector 2 and the outlet 15 is shown. The loop connector 2 includes a button 10 that can be manually actuated, such as by a thumb or finger, to remove the loop connector 2 from the outlet 15. The button 10 is formed of a resilient material and has a portion configured to be received in a recess 601 formed in the outer wall of the outlet 15. Pressing down the button 10 disengages the engaging portion of the button 10 from the recess 601. Figure 8D and Figure 8E An alternative embodiment is shown in which the button 10 is formed of a substantially rigid material but may be spring-mounted. Pressing down the button 10 acts on the spring and disengages the engagement portion 602 of the button 10 from the recess in the outer wall of the outlet 15.
[0142] Figure 9A and Figure 9B An alternative embodiment is shown in which the button 10 or at least its engagement portion 602 is spring-loaded, thereby deforming at least a portion of the button 10 to disengage these engagement portions 602 from the recess 601 in the outlet 15.
[0143] Figures 10A to 10H An alternative embodiment of the loop connector 2 is shown. Figures 10F to 10HIn this embodiment, a portion of the loop connector 2 is removed to reveal additional details. According to this embodiment, the buttons 10 are positioned on the side of the loop connector 2 because this may be more convenient for the user to place at a natural point of contact when attempting to disconnect the loop connector 2 from the outlet 15. These buttons 10 are integrated with or operatively coupled to a resiliently deformable ring 701. Pressing down these buttons 10 disengages the ring 701 from a recess formed in at least one of the upper and lower outer surfaces of the outlet 15, thereby allowing the removal of the loop connector 2. Figures 10A to 10H A cavity 702 for receiving electrical connections or other connections is also shown. As an alternative to a recess, a protrusion 705 may be used in the outlet 15, such as... Figure 10I As shown in the cross-section. This applies to this and other embodiments disclosed herein. In some such embodiments, when the loop connector 2 is engaged with the outlet 15, the top of the ring 701 rests behind (or closer to) the protrusion 705 than the protrusion 705. To disengage the loop connector 2 from the outlet 15, the buttons 10 are pressed to deform the ring 701, causing the top of the ring 701 to rise above the level of the protrusion 705 and the loop connector 2 can then be removed from the outlet 15. Figure 10J and Figure 10K Another embodiment is shown, in which the electrical terminals are in the form of edge clips 901. A groove 902 configured to receive a seal such as an O-ring is further shown.
[0144] Electrical connectors
[0145] Figure 8A and Figure 8B An exemplary electrical connector 801 is shown. These electrical connectors may be disposed in the extension portion 504 of the loop connector 2 such that they extend beyond the pneumatic connector and are electrically and / or communicatively coupled to the cooperating connector 802 on the connector 6 (e.g., Figure 6D As shown in the image. Figure 8A and Figure 8B As shown, electrical connectors and other connections can be formed from tab contacts received in corresponding recesses in connector 6, which house contacts for engagement with these tab contacts. Other connectors, such as pins, can be used alternatively, but tab contacts are advantageous in that they provide tolerances for precise relative positioning of the tabs in these recesses. In the illustrated embodiment, some vertical tolerances are provided.
[0146] According to an alternative embodiment, these electrical contacts include one or more telescopic or spring-loaded pin contacts, each comprising spring-mounted pins received in passages that allow the spring-loaded pins to vary the degree of their protrusion from the housing, thereby providing tolerances in the relative positions of the loop connector 2 and the connector 6 along the axes of these pins. Furthermore, the ability of these pins to be depressed makes them easier to insert into holes receiving mating or cooperating connectors.
[0147] According to another alternative embodiment, these electrical connectors include edge card connectors or card edge connectors, wherein a first portion of the connector has one or more conductive tracks disposed on a printed circuit board and configured to contact one or more pins of a second portion of the connector.
[0148] Alternative embodiments
[0149] Figure 11A This is a cross-sectional view of an alternative embodiment of the loop connector 2 that engages with the outlet 15 of the humidification chamber 4. In this embodiment, the loop connector 2 has a convex connection such that at least a portion of the loop connector 2 is received within the outlet 15. An O-ring 1005 or other seal is used to seal between these convex parts and the inner wall of the outlet 15.
[0150] Figure 11B It shows the relationship with Figure 11A A similar view is provided, but this view is modified so that outlet 15 is configured as a convex part that mates with the inner wall of the inlet of loop connector 2. Similarly, O-rings 1005 or other seals can be used to reduce or eliminate the possibility of leakage.
[0151] For reference Figure 12 The humidification system 2000 is shown therein. The humidification system 2000 can have any suitable configuration. The humidification system 2000 can be used in conjunction with other components to supply heated and / or humidified gas for continuous, variable, or bilevel positive airway pressure (PAP) or any other type of respiratory therapy. The humidification system can also be used in conjunction with devices for surgical applications, such as for laparoscopic surgery.
[0152] The illustrated humidification system 2000 includes a base 2002 that receives a humidification chamber 2004. A supply catheter 2006 and a delivery catheter 2008 can be connected to the humidification chamber 2004. The supply catheter 2006 delivers airflow to be humidified into the humidification chamber 2004. The delivery catheter 2008 delivers the airflow to a user or patient after it has been humidified within the chamber 2004.
[0153] In some configurations, base 2002 includes an electrical connection to one or both of the supply conduit 2006 and the delivery conduit 2008 (e.g., the inhalation branch). In the illustrated configuration, base 2002 includes a clamp or connector 2010. The clamp or connector 2010 may be integrally formed with base 2002 or may be a separate, replaceable module or clamp. One or both of conduits 2006 and 2008 may include one or more wires. These wires may include one or more resistance heating wires that provide heating to the conduit wall and / or airflow. These wires may include one or more sensor wires that facilitate the transmission of signals relating to one or more parameters of system 2000. Therefore, the term "electrical connection" is used in its broadest sense and should include, for example, but not limited to, optical signals implemented via fiber optic devices.
[0154] The illustrated delivery catheter 2008 includes a connector 2012. The connector 2012 facilitates an electrical connection between the catheter 2008 and the clamp 2010. The connector 2012 also facilitates a pneumatic connection between the catheter 2008 and the chamber 2004. Therefore, the connector 2012 facilitates an electrical connection between the base 2002 (via the clamp 2010) and the catheter 2008, and a pneumatic connection between the chamber 2004 and the catheter 2008.
[0155] In the illustrated configuration, connector 2012 is configured for connection in a horizontal direction (i.e., parallel to the direction in which chamber 2004 is inserted into or onto base 2002). Connector 2012 is configured for electrical connection to clamp 2010 in this horizontal direction. Connector 2012 is also configured for pneumatic connection to chamber 2004 in this horizontal direction. Connector 2012 is configured to connect to both clamp 2010 and chamber 2004 in the same horizontal direction.
[0156] Clamp or connector
[0157] Figures 13 to 16 The diagram better illustrates these connections between the clamp or connector 2010, the chamber 2004, and the connector 2012. As shown, the clamp 2010 may include an electrical connector (e.g., such as...) superimposed on the clamp 2010. Figure 16 The housing portion 2020 on the electrical contact 2034 shown. The housing portion 2020 can extend in front of the base 2002 in a generally horizontal direction.
[0158] The housing portion 2020 may include a recess 2022 extending vertically. This recess 2022 is sized, positioned, and configured to receive a portion of the connector 2012 including a release button 2024. In the illustrated configuration, at least a portion of the housing 2020 further extends along the upper portion of the connector 2012 (when connected to the clamp 2010) from the base 2002 relative to the release button 2024 on the connector 2012. Other configurations are possible.
[0159] Block
[0160] refer to Figure 14 In the illustrated configuration, insert 2030 facilitates an electrical connection between connector 2012 and holder 2010. In some configurations, water droplets or other moisture may be present on connector 2012. Insert 2030 helps to isolate holder 2010 from water or other moisture while facilitating the desired electrical connection between connector 2012 and holder 2010.
[0161] The insert 2030 can be mounted onto the connector 2012 or onto the clamp 2010. In some configurations, the insert 2030 is not mounted onto either the connector 2012 or the clamp 2010. In the configuration shown, the insert 2030 is mounted onto the clamp 2010. By mounting the insert 2030 onto the clamp 2010, the possibility of misplacement or similar issues during changes to the conduit 2008 is significantly reduced. By not mounting the insert 2030 onto the connector 2012, changes to the conduit 2008 are simplified, and there is less waste compared to the insert 2030 potentially being discarded along with the conduit 2008 after each use.
[0162] refer to Figures 17 to 18 The insert 2030 has a first electrical contact 2032 and a second electrical contact 2034. The first electrical contact 2032 is sized, positioned, and configured to engage with the electrical connector of the clamp 2010. The second electrical contact 2034 is sized, positioned, and configured to engage with the electrical contact 2036 of the connector 2012 (see [link]). Figure 14 The first electrical contact 2032 and the second electrical contact 2034 can be connected together in any suitable manner. Advantageously, the insert 2030 transforms the overall horizontal connection between the first electrical contact 2032 and the electrical connector of the clamp 2010 into an overall vertical connection between the second electrical contact 2034 and the electrical contact 2036 of the connector 2012.
[0163] Insert 2030 includes a body 2040. The body 2040 is sized and configured to be received within a housing 2020. In some configurations, the body 2040 is sized and configured to be held within the housing 2020. In some configurations, the housing 2020 includes one or more alignment features 2042. In the illustrated configuration, the alignment features 2042 of the housing 2020 include guide rails 2042. These guide rails 2042 can have any suitable configuration. In the illustrated configuration, two guide rails 2042 are aligned with each other on opposite sides of the housing 2020 in diameter. Furthermore, as... Figure 15 As shown, the illustrated clamp 2010 also includes a flange 2044. This flange 2044 may be integrally formed with the guide rail 2042, or it may be a feature separate from the guide rail 2042. The flange 2044 extends generally horizontally and protrudes forward from the rear wall of the cavity of the receiving connector 2012. The flange 2044 is covered by a shield 2020. In some configurations, the flange 2044 has a stepped configuration, with a reduced thickness at the distal end relative to the proximal end, wherein the proximal end is closer to the rear wall of the cavity than the distal end.
[0164] The body 2040 includes a mounting boss 2046. A recess 2048 may be defined between the mounting boss 2046 and another portion of the body 2040 extending to the first electrical contact 2032. The recess 2048 may be sized and configured to receive at least a portion of the flange 2044. Specifically, the engaging portion 2050 of the body 2040 may be spaced apart from the mounting boss 2044 by the recess 2048. Other configurations are possible.
[0165] Mounting boss 2044 may include channels 2052. These channels 2052 may be sized, positioned, and configured to receive guide rail 2042. These channels 2052 may have a length shorter than the length of guide rail 2042, such that a large portion of guide rail 2042 is exposed outside mounting boss 2044 when insert 2030 has been secured inside housing 2020.
[0166] The engaging portion 2050 of the body 2040 may include one or more retaining elements 2054. In the illustrated configuration, each of the one or more retaining elements 2054 may include a deflectable tab. At least one deflectable tab 2054 may be positioned on each opposite side of the body 2040. In the illustrated configuration, the body 2040 has deflectable tabs 2054 arranged on each lateral side of the body 2040.
[0167] These tabs 2054 may include a catching element 2056. The catching element 2056 may extend laterally away from the body 2040. In some configurations, the catching element 2056 may extend generally perpendicularly from a recess that spaces at least a portion of the deflectable tab 2054 from the body 2040. In some configurations, the proximal portion of the deflectable tab 2054 (including the catching element 2056) may be shaped to facilitate inward deflection of the tab 2054 toward the body 2040 during insertion of the insert 2030 into the housing 2020. For example, the proximal surface of the catching element 2056 may taper gradually when viewed from above.
[0168] The body 2040 includes a distal end 2060. Adjacent to this distal end 2060, the upper surface of the body 2040 can be shaped to match the inner surface of the shroud 2020. In the illustrated configuration, both are curved.
[0169] The distal end 2060 of the main body 2040 may be recessed within the casing 2020. For example... Figure 15 As shown, the distal end 2060 can be shaped and configured to complement the adjacent end of the connector 2012. For example, in the configuration shown, the distal end 2060 of the body 2040 can taper slightly.
[0170] Contact surface 2062 can be positioned between distal end 2060 and mounting boss 2046. In the illustrated configuration, contact surface 2062 faces downward. In some configurations, contact surface 2062 is generally planar.
[0171] The contact surface includes one or more openings through which contact terminals 2064 can extend. These contact terminals 2064 may define at least a portion of the second electrical contact 2034. These contact terminals 2064 may have any suitable configuration.
[0172] In some configurations, these contact terminals 2064 are spring-loaded terminals configured to minimize or reduce surfaces to which water may adhere. In other configurations, these contact terminals 2064 are spring-loaded terminals configured to minimize or reduce surfaces to which cloth may become trapped during wiping or cleaning. In the relaxed state, these contact terminals 2064 advantageously protrude downward beyond the contact surface 2062. When pressed down, these contact terminals 2064 can be at least partially deflected into the body 2040.
[0173] refer to Figure 17In some configurations, the body 2040 may include a surrounding recess 2066. This recess 2066 may be positioned at the rear of the support 2068 that connects the mounting boss 2046 to the engagement portion 2050. In some configurations, the recess 2066 may receive a sealing element 2070. In some such configurations, the sealing element 2070 may be a seal, an O-ring, etc. In some configurations, neither the recess 2066 nor the sealing element 2070 is present.
[0174] refer to Figure 15 Insert 2030 can be inserted into housing 2020. During insertion, guide rail 2042 is positioned within channel 2052, causing insert 2030 to slide proximally until flange 2044 is received within recess 2048. Sealing member 2070, if present, can be compressed between engagement portion 2050 and the surrounding portion of clamp 2010. During insertion, features on the inner surface of housing 2020 can cause tab 2054 to deflect inward toward body 2040 until snapping element 2056 is adjacent to these features on the inner surface, at which point tab 2054 can return to a relaxed state with snapping element 2056 positioned adjacent to these features on the inner surface. Any suitable configuration for securing insert 2030 within housing 2020 can be used. Once inserted and secured in place, the first electrical contact 2032 (e.g., a socket) can make electrical contact with the corresponding element (e.g., a pin) of the electrical connector of the clamp 2010. Once the insert 2030 is in place, the second electrical contact 2034 (e.g., terminal 2064) is easily accessible for drying, wiping, cleaning, etc. Furthermore, due to the configuration of these terminals 2064, the coating applied to them, etc., water and other liquids are unlikely to remain on or adhere to these terminals 2064.
[0175] connector
[0176] For reference Figures 19 to 24 The connector 2012 will be described in further detail. The connector 2012 can be fastened to the end of the conduit 2008 in any suitable manner.
[0177] refer to Figure 24 The connector 2012 typically includes an inner plug 2100. A conduit 2008 can be threaded onto the illustrated inner plug 2100 and can be fastened to the inner plug using overmolding or any other suitable technique. In some configurations, a seal 2102 can be positioned on the outer surface of the inner plug 2100. This seal 2102 can be used to help form a pneumatic seal with the inner surface of the port of the chamber 2004.
[0178] The internal plug 2100 also carries a printed circuit board 2104. The printed circuit board 2104 may include contact pads 2106. These contact pads 2106 can have any suitable configuration. These contact pads 2106 are sized, positioned, and configured to contact the terminals 2064 of the second electrical contact 2034 of the insert 2030. In the illustrated configuration, there are six contact pads 2106 spaced equidistant from each other. These contact pads 2106 can be spaced to reduce the possibility of short circuits due to the presence of water droplets.
[0179] For reference Figures 42 to 44 An exemplary embodiment of connector 2012 may have contact pads 2106 that are sized, positioned and spaced apart according to different designs. Figure 42 An exemplary embodiment of the conduit connector 2012 is shown, along with contact pads 2106 that are uniformly sized and evenly spaced, wherein these contact pads 2106 are positioned in the order of heater pad, identification pad, sensor pad, sensor pad, identification pad, heater pad (which may be designated as HISSIH), each suitable for connection to the corresponding wire. Figure 43 An exemplary embodiment of the conduit connector 2012 is shown, along with contact pads 2106 that are evenly spaced and also follow the HISSIH sequence but have longer heater pads. These longer heater pads help ensure that the heater wire connection is made before the identification wire connection and the sensor wire connection are made, and that the heater wire connection is made after the identification wire connection and the sensor wire connection are made. Figure 44 An exemplary embodiment of the conduit connector 2012 is shown, wherein the contact pad 2106 also has a longer heater pad, but has pads with non-uniform spacing from top to bottom in the order SSIIHH, which increases the spacing between these sensor pads and these heater pads. In one embodiment, the first sensor pad (at the top, such as...) Figure 44 The first sensor pad (shown in the diagram) is adapted to connect to the positive sensor wire, and the second sensor pad is adapted to connect to the negative sensor wire, which helps to maximize the spacing between the positive sensor pad and these heater pads. Additionally, refer to... Figure 45 One embodiment of connector 2012 has contact pads 2106 arranged in the order SSIIHH from top to bottom, which have longer heater pads and gaps between these heater pads and other pads, thereby again helping to maximize the spacing between these heater pads and these sensor pads.
[0180] Figure 48 A portion of an alternative embodiment of the clamp 2010 is shown, along with an insert 2030 having electrical contacts or contacts 2034 below the housing portion 2020. In this embodiment, these electrical contacts 2034 have a... Figure 47The spacing of the contact pads 2106 corresponds to the spacing, specifically having a gap between the contacts corresponding to the heater pad and the contacts corresponding to the identification pad and the sensor pad. Figure 49 and Figure 50 supply Figure 48 Additional view of an alternative embodiment of the block 2030 shown.
[0181] Refer again Figures 19 to 24 The inner plug 2100 can be retained within a cavity defined within the front cover 2110 and the rear cover 2112. The front cover 2110 and the rear cover 2112 can be coupled together or coupled to the inner plug 2100 so as to generally enclose the inner plug 2100 within these covers 2110, 2112. In the illustrated configuration, the rear cover 2112 clamps onto a portion of the inner plug 2100 and the front cover 2110, and the front cover 2110 also clamps onto a portion of the inner plug 2100.
[0182] In some configurations, the gap between the front cover 2110 and the rear cover 2112 is blurred by overlapping at least a portion of one of the two covers 2110, 2112 onto a corresponding portion of the other. In the illustrated configuration, the front cover 2110 includes a lip 2116 of the rear cover 2112 with a recess 2114 thereon on which it slides. Therefore, the lip 2116 blurs the gap between the two covers 2110, 2112, and the abutment relationship between the two covers 2110, 2112 reduces the possibility of water seeping into the connector 2012.
[0183] In the illustrated configuration, the locking ring 2118 can be secured between the front cover 2110 and the inner plug 2100. The locking ring 2118 includes release buttons 2024. These release buttons 2024 protrude through openings 2120 provided in the front cover 2110 and / or the rear cover 2112. The locking ring 2118 is configured to latch onto the port of the chamber 2004, and the locking ring 2118 can be deflected by pressing the release buttons 2024 toward each other, allowing the locking ring 2118 (and thus the connector 2012) to be removed from the port of the chamber 2004.
[0184] Refer again Figures 19 to 22 The front cover 2110 shown has the same Figure 24 The configuration shown is slightly different. For example... Figures 19 to 22 As shown, the distal end 2120 of the front cover 2110 may have a sloped surface 2122. This sloped surface 2122 may result in the top portion of the front cover 2110 extending further distally than the bottom portion. In some configurations, the sloped surface 2122 is generally planar. In some configurations, the sloped surface 2122 may be curved. Other configurations are possible.
[0185] refer to Figure 19 , Figure 21 and Figure 23 The printed circuit board 2104 can be supported by a front cover 2110. In the illustrated configuration, the front cover 2110 incorporates a support region 2125 that can be generally surrounded by an outer surface 2124. This support region 2125 can be located beneath the printed circuit board 2104. The support region 2125 can provide support to the printed circuit board 2104 to reduce the likelihood of bending and deflection of the printed circuit board 2104 during connection and use of the connector 2012. In the illustrated configuration (see...) Figure 23 The support area may include one or more ribs, etc. In the illustrated configuration, the support area includes a ledge formed generally around the rim of the printed circuit board 2104. The illustrated ledge is recessed, such that the printed circuit board 2104 is recessed or flush with the surrounding portion of the front cover 2110. The one or more ribs may extend below a more central portion of the printed circuit board 2104 and may define support for at least the central portion of the printed circuit board 2104. Any number of ribs may be used. In some configurations, other forms of support (boobs, steps, etc.) may be used. In some configurations, a central support is not used.
[0186] refer to Figure 22 The front cover 2110 also includes at least one channel 2126. In the illustrated configuration, the front cover 2110 includes two channels 2126. The illustrated channels 2126 are generally diametrically opposed. These channels 2126 align with and receive the guide rail 2042 of the housing 2020. In this way, these channels 2126 can facilitate the alignment of the connector 2012 during engagement with the clamp 2010. These channels 2126 and the guide rail 2042 also help resist vertical movement (e.g., up and down), twisting (e.g., rotation relative to the inner cavity axis), and yaw (e.g., rotation relative to an axis perpendicular to the inner cavity axis) of the connector 2012 relative to the clamp 2010 (when the two are engaged).
[0187] Refer again Figure 21 The front cover 2110 includes a groove 2128. The groove 2128 extends over at least the upper portion of the front cover 2110. In the illustrated configuration, the groove 2128 has at least contact with the printed circuit board 2104 (see [link]). Figure 20The groove 2128 has a lateral span as large as the width of the connector 2012. This groove 2128 helps to deflect any liquid that might spill onto the connector 2012 away from the printed circuit board 2104. The groove 2128 is therefore adjacent to the printed circuit board 2104 and can be recessed into the front cover 2110, such that at least the lip is defined between the groove 2128 and the printed circuit board 2104. Other configurations are possible.
[0188] refer to Figure 21 The inner plug 2100 defines an inner cavity 2130. This inner cavity 2130 is in fluid communication with the conduit 2008. The inner cavity 2130 has a distal end 2132. This distal end 2132 has a non-perpendicular configuration. In other words, the distal end 2132 is not simply square relative to the axis of the inner cavity 2130. In some configurations, the distal end 2132 is configured to complement the internal shape of the port of the humidification chamber 2004 into which it will be inserted. In some configurations, the distal end 2132 of the inner cavity 2130 will be angled and extend as far as possible into the port to improve the ability of condensate to flow back into the humidification chamber 2004. This is in Figure 15 It is shown most clearly in the middle.
[0189] The distal end 2132 of the cavity 2130 is inclined. In the illustrated configuration, the distal end 2132 of the cavity 2130 is inclined at a different slope relative to the inclined surface 2122 of the front cover 2110. The top of the cavity 2130 extends further distally relative to the bottom of the cavity 2130. Furthermore, the top of the cavity 2130 extends forward of the foremost portion of the inclined surface 2122 of the front cover 2110. The top of the cavity 2130 extends further distally than any portion of the front cover 2110. In some configurations, the front cover 2110 extends distally to the bottom portion of the cavity 2130, but the top portion of the cavity 2130 extends further distally than the upper portion of the front cover 2110.
[0190] In some configurations, the recess angle R can be defined. This recess angle R can be the angle between the upper portion of the front cover 2110 and the upper portion of the inner cavity 2130 when viewed from the side. In some configurations, this recess angle R can be 18 degrees. It is believed that if this recess angle R is greater than 18 degrees, and if condensate is drained from the conduit 2008 with the connector 2012 upside down (i.e., the printed circuit board 2104 is horizontal and the contact pad 2106 is facing the floor), the possibility of condensate dripping back onto the printed circuit board 2104 can be greatly reduced or eliminated.
[0191] refer to Figure 45 and Figure 46In an alternative embodiment of connector 2012, the outer support surface 2124 may be flared, i.e., wider at the distal end 2120 than the furrow 2128. This flare helps ensure that the channels 2126 are properly vertically aligned with the guide rail 2042 when connector 2012 is inserted under housing 2020.
[0192] refer to Figure 25 The cavity 2004 includes a port 2138. This port 2138 terminates in an opening 2140. As shown, when the printed circuit board 2104 approaches and contacts the terminal 2064 of the insert 2030, the distal end 2132 of the cavity 2130 is completely within the port 2138. Thus, in the illustrated configuration, during the disconnection of the connector 2012 from the clamp 2010 and the port 2138, the electrical connection between the printed circuit board 2104 and the insert 2030 will be broken before the pneumatic connection between the cavity 2130 and the port 2138 will be broken. In other words, the electrical connection is broken before the pneumatic connection. Similarly, during the connection of the connector 2012 to the clamp 2010 and the port 2138, the pneumatic connection will be established before the electrical connection. More specifically, the cavity 2130 and the port 2138 will mate before the terminal 2064 contacts the pad 2106 of the printed circuit board 2104.
