Technical Field
[0001] This invention relates to the field of turbomachinery technology, and to a test bench for air turbine starters and starter control valves, specifically to a comprehensive performance test bench and test method for air turbine starters and starter control valves. Background Technology
[0002] Air turbine starters and their starting systems are widely used in modern aircraft such as civil airliners and trainer aircraft, as well as industrial gas turbines and marine gas turbines, due to their simple structure, safety, reliability, and low cost.
[0003] Air turbine starters and their starting systems typically consist of an air turbine starter and a starting control valve. An air turbine starter generally has a high-speed turbine connected to the engine shaft via a high-reduction gearbox. The air source for the high-speed turbine is usually from ground-based air supply or an onboard auxiliary power unit, or it can be drawn from another running engine.
[0004] Existing performance test benches for air turbine starters and starter control valves are mostly constructed as two separate test benches for air turbine starters and starter control valves. Furthermore, the applicable range of air turbine starters and starter control valves is relatively small. To meet the testing needs of multiple product models, test benches are repeatedly constructed, resulting in high costs. Therefore, it is necessary to construct a comprehensive performance test bench for air turbine starters and starter control valves, integrating the two separate test benches into one. This would simplify equipment, reduce costs, increase the scalability of the test bench, and make it applicable to air turbine starters and starter control valves with a wider range of parameters. This is of great significance for the research and development of air turbine starters and starter control valves. Summary of the Invention
[0005] The purpose of this invention is to address the aforementioned problems by providing a comprehensive performance test bench and testing method for air turbine starters and starter control valves. This invention integrates two separate test benches for air turbine starters and starter control valves into a single test bench, simplifying equipment, reducing costs, and improving the closeness of the test bench's performance parameters to real-world operating conditions. This allows the test bench to be applicable to testing different models of air turbine starters and starter control valves. Furthermore, it provides a performance testing method for air turbine starters and starter control valves, facilitating the acquisition of product performance parameters and curves.
[0006] The technical solution of this invention:
[0007] A comprehensive performance test bench for an air turbine starter and starter control valve includes an air source regulation and heating system, an air turbine starter and starter control valve system, a simulated load and drive system, and an exhaust system. The air turbine starter and starter control valve system includes an air turbine starter and a starter control valve. The air source regulation and heating system is connected to the air turbine starter and starter control valve system and supplies air to them. The simulated load and drive system is connected to the air turbine starter and starter control valve system, providing the inertial load required for the simulated test and providing timely reverse drive power, while also providing the ability to lock the air turbine starter. The exhaust system connected to the air turbine starter and starter control valve system performs noise reduction treatment on the exhaust.
[0008] Furthermore, the air source regulation and heating system includes a gate valve, a filter, an electric shut-off valve, a mass flow meter, a regulating valve, an electric heater, a pressure sensor, a vent valve, an equivalent throttle orifice, and a regulating valve. The airflow passes sequentially through the gate valve, filter, electric shut-off valve, mass flow meter, regulating valve, and electric heater, and then splits into two paths. One path connects to the exhaust system through the vent valve and equivalent throttle orifice for adjusting the air source parameters before the test, and the other path directly connects to the air turbine starter and start control valve system. The regulating valve is installed on another branch after the filter for quickly adjusting the air source pressure.
[0009] Furthermore, the air turbine starter and starter control valve system also includes an air supply valve, a front temperature and pressure measuring section, a rear temperature and pressure measuring section, and a lubrication and measuring device; the front end of the air supply valve is connected to the pressure sensor and vent valve of the air source regulation and heating system, and the air supply valve is connected to the starter control valve through the front temperature and pressure measuring section to provide an air source, and the rear end of the starter control valve is connected to the rear temperature and pressure measuring section; the air turbine starter is detachably connected to the rear temperature and pressure measuring section; the lubrication and measuring device is connected to the air turbine starter through mechanical pipelines to provide it with lubricating oil and for measurement.
[0010] Furthermore, the equivalent throttle orifice size and type were matched with the performance tests of the product series air turbine starters.
[0011] Furthermore, the simulated load and drive system includes a speed and torque meter, coupling, reduction gearbox, clutch, coupling, braking device, coupling, inertial flywheel, clutch, coupling, electric dynamometer, and static braking device. The speed and torque meter is detachably connected to the rear end of the air turbine starter, and after passing through the coupling and reduction gearbox, it is divided into three paths, which are respectively connected to the inertial flywheel test station composed of the clutch, coupling, braking device, coupling, and inertial flywheel, the electric dynamometer test station composed of the clutch, coupling, and electric dynamometer connected in sequence, and the static braking device.
[0012] Furthermore, an inertial flywheel or an electric dynamometer is used as the load, and the inertia simulation technology of the electric dynamometer is used to simulate the load inertia of different engines, thereby matching the performance test of a series of air turbine starters.
[0013] Furthermore, a static torque test was conducted on the air turbine starter using a static braking device.
[0014] A comprehensive performance test method for an air turbine starter and a starter control valve is provided, using the aforementioned comprehensive performance test bench for the air turbine starter and starter control valve, and includes a test method for the air turbine starter and a test method for the starter control valve.
[0015] Furthermore, during the start-up control valve test, the gas source regulation and heating system provides a gas source for the start-up control valve under test, and is connected to the temperature and pressure measurement section to form the start-up control valve test system;
[0016] The specific test method for the starting control valve is as follows:
[0017] Before the formal test, the temperature of the incoming compressed air is regulated and heated by the air source regulation and heating system until the air source temperature and pressure meet the test conditions. During the formal test, the vent valve is closed, allowing the air source to flow through the start control valve and then be discharged. The flow and pressure parameters of the start control valve are tested by measuring the temperature and pressure before and after the valve. The air source state is adjusted so that the start control valve operates at different state points, thereby obtaining the performance curve of the start control valve.
[0018] Furthermore, during the air turbine starter test, the air source regulation and heating system provides the air source for the tested air turbine starter, while the simulated load and drive system is used to simulate the rear load.
[0019] The test method for air turbine starters is as follows:
[0020] When conducting a simulated engine start-up test using the inertial flywheel station, the static braking device and the electric dynamometer station are disconnected. First, the incoming compressed air is regulated by the air source adjustment and heating system, and heated by the electric heater until the air source temperature and pressure meet the test conditions. During the test, the vent valve is closed, allowing the high-temperature, high-pressure air to drive the turbine and be discharged. The high-speed turbine, after deceleration, transmits torque to the rear output shaft, which is connected to the rear load simulation system via a coupling. When the air turbine starter output shaft speed reaches the specified cut-off speed, the air turbine starter inlet air source is cut off, the vent valve is opened, and simultaneously, the inertial flywheel station braking device is activated to stop the inertial flywheel. During the test, the air turbine starter inlet air source temperature, pressure, output speed, and torque parameters are measured. By changing the air source state to make the air turbine starter operate at different state points, the measured parameters at different state points are connected to obtain the air turbine starter performance curve.
[0021] When using an electric dynamometer station to simulate engine starting and overrunning tests, the static brake and inertial flywheel stations are disconnected. First, the incoming compressed air is regulated by the air source adjustment and heating system and heated by the electric heater until the air source temperature and pressure meet the test conditions. During the test, the vent valve is closed, allowing the high-temperature, high-pressure air to drive the turbine and be discharged. The high-speed turbine, after deceleration, transmits torque to the rear output shaft, which is connected to the rear load simulation system via a coupling. When the air turbine starter output shaft speed reaches the specified cut-off speed, the air turbine starter inlet air source is cut off, the vent valve is opened, and the electric dynamometer switches its operating mode from load mode to motor mode, continuing to drive the output shaft in reverse to the overrunning speed, completing the overrunning test. During the test, parameters such as the air turbine starter inlet air source temperature, pressure, output speed, and torque are measured. By changing the air source state to operate the air turbine starter at different state points, the measured parameters at different state points are connected to obtain the air turbine starter performance curve and complete the overrunning verification.
[0022] During the air turbine starter torque test, the inertial flywheel station and the electric dynamometer station are disconnected; the air turbine starter is locked by the static brake device, and the air source drives the air turbine starter to run, and the static torque of the air turbine starter is measured.

Detailed Implementation
[0029] This section is a description of the implementation of the present invention, used to explain and illustrate the technical solutions of the present invention.
[0030] A comprehensive performance test bench for an air turbine starter and a starter control valve mainly includes an air source regulation and heating system 1, an air turbine starter and starter control valve system 2, a simulated load and drive system 3, and an exhaust system 4.
[0031] The air source regulation and heating system 1 includes a gate valve 11, a filter 12, an electric shut-off valve 13, a mass flow meter 14, a regulating valve 15, an electric heater 16, a pressure sensor 17, a vent valve 18, an equivalent throttle orifice 19, and a regulating valve 110. This system can provide high-temperature air within a wide temperature range of 0–400℃, allowing for more accurate simulation of ground-based air sources, auxiliary power unit bleed air, and engine cross-bleed air source conditions during testing, resulting in more accurate test results. The main function of the air source regulation and heating system is to filter and regulate the incoming compressed air before it enters the electric heater. The electric heater adjusts its heating power according to the set hot air temperature and flow pressure requirements, ensuring that the outlet temperature fluctuation of the electric heater does not exceed 1℃, thus meeting the intake pressure and temperature requirements of the tested air turbine starter and starter control valve. The intake pipeline is equipped with a flow meter and a regulating valve, allowing the intake pressure of the tested air turbine starter and starter control valve to be autonomously controlled within a certain range using the regulating valve and pressure sensor. Another small-diameter branch is used to extend the minimum flow range of the air intake for the air turbine starter and starter control valve; this branch can be closed with a gate valve. A vent branch at the rear is used for venting through a simulated equivalent orifice when adjusting the air supply.
[0032] The air turbine starter and starter control valve system 2 can be used for testing the air turbine starter and starter control valve. During starter control valve testing, hot air meeting the test conditions enters the starter control valve 23 after passing through the air supply valve 21 and the front temperature and pressure measurement section 22, and is discharged to the atmosphere after passing through the rear temperature and pressure measurement section 24. The front and rear temperature and pressure measurement sections are used to measure the inlet and outlet temperature and pressure parameters of the starter control valve. During air turbine starter testing, hot air meeting the test conditions flows through the air supply valve 21 and other components, then exits through the air turbine starter 25. The rear output shaft of the air turbine starter is connected to a simulated load and drive system for performance testing. Simultaneously, to ensure the safe operation of the air turbine starter, the lubrication and measurement device 26 mainly consists of an oil pump station, regulating valve, water-cooled heat exchanger, pressure sensor, flow meter, etc., used to provide the air turbine starter with lubricating oil at a specified pressure and flow rate.
[0033] The simulated load and drive system includes a tachometer / torque meter 31, a coupling 32, a reduction gearbox 33, a clutch 34, a coupling 35, a braking device 36, a coupling 37, an inertial flywheel 38, a clutch 39, a coupling 310, an electric dynamometer 311, and a static braking device 312. The simulated load and drive system is used to simulate the inertial load of an air turbine starter, provide overrunning rotational power input, and provide static torque test braking capability. The simulated load and drive system includes three stations. The inertial flywheel station, consisting of coupling 32, reduction gearbox 33, clutch 34, coupling 35, braking device 36, coupling 37, and inertial flywheel 38, is used for performance testing of the air turbine starter. During the test, the output shaft of the air turbine starter is connected to a speed and torque meter at high speed for speed and torque measurement, which can be used to calculate the output power of the air turbine starter. After torque measurement, it is connected to the reduction gearbox to reduce speed and increase torque, and then connected to the braking device and inertial flywheel. During the test, the inertial flywheel acts as an inertia simulation device to simulate engine load. After the output shaft speed of the air turbine starter reaches the target speed, the flywheel is braked by the braking device. The electric dynamometer station, consisting of clutch 39, coupling 310, and electric dynamometer 311, is used for performance testing and overrunning tests of the air turbine starter. During testing, the air turbine starter output shaft is connected to a speed and torque meter at high speed for high-speed speed and torque measurement, which can be used to calculate the output power of the air turbine starter. After torque measurement, it is connected to a reduction gearbox to reduce speed and increase torque, and then connected to the electric dynamometer. During performance testing, the electric dynamometer acts as an inertia simulation device to simulate engine load. After the air turbine starter output shaft speed reaches the target speed, the electric dynamometer switches from the load state simulated by inertia to the state of a power output motor, further increasing the output shaft speed of the air turbine starter to conduct the overrunning test. The static brake device 312 is used to lock the air turbine starter output shaft in a static state for air turbine starter torque testing.
[0034] The exhaust system 4 includes a muffler and an exhaust muffler tower. It is used to silence and discharge exhaust gases.
[0035] Test method for starting control valve:
[0036] During the starter control valve test, the air turbine starter is not installed, and related pipeline connections are disconnected. Before the formal test, the incoming compressed air is conditioned using the air source regulation and heating system, and heated by an electric heater until the air source temperature and pressure meet the test conditions. During the formal test, the vent valve is closed, allowing the air source to flow through the starter control valve and then discharge. The flow and pressure parameters of the starter control valve are tested using the temperature and pressure measurement sections before and after the valve. The air source state is adjusted so that the starter control valve operates at different state points, thereby obtaining the starter control valve performance curve. This completes the two test components of the starter control valve performance test:
[0037] a) Curves showing the relationship between the downstream pressure and time of the starting control valve under various inlet pressure and temperature conditions;
[0038] b) Curves showing the relationship between air flow rate of the start-up control valve and time under each inlet condition;
[0039] c) Dynamic performance curves of starting control valves under various inlet pressure and temperature conditions.
[0040] Air turbine starter test method:
[0041] When conducting simulated engine starting tests using the inertial flywheel station, the static braking device and the electric dynamometer station are disconnected. First, the incoming compressed air is regulated by the air source regulation and heating system, and heated by the electric heater until the air source temperature and pressure meet the test conditions. During the test, the vent valve is closed, allowing the high-temperature, high-pressure air to drive the turbine and be discharged. The high-speed turbine, after deceleration, transmits torque to the rear output shaft, which is connected to the rear load simulation system via a coupling. When the air turbine starter output shaft speed reaches the specified cut-off speed, the air source inlet to the air turbine starter is cut off, the vent valve is opened, and simultaneously, the braking device at the inertial flywheel station engages, stopping the inertial flywheel. During the test, parameters such as the air source inlet temperature, pressure, output speed, and torque of the air turbine starter are measured. By changing the air source state, the air turbine starter operates at different state points, and the measured parameters at different state points are connected to obtain the air turbine starter performance curve.
[0042] When conducting simulated engine starting and overrun tests using an electric dynamometer, the static braking device and the inertial flywheel station are disconnected. When the air turbine starter output shaft speed reaches the specified cut-off speed, the air source supply to the air turbine starter is cut off, the vent valve is opened, and simultaneously, the electric dynamometer switches its operating mode from load mode to motor mode, continuing to drive the output shaft in reverse to the overrun speed, completing the overrun test. During the test, parameters such as the air turbine starter inlet air source temperature, pressure, output speed, and torque are measured. By changing the air source state to operate the air turbine starter at different state points, the measured parameters at different state points are connected to obtain the air turbine starter performance curve and complete the overrun verification. This allows for the completion of the seven test items of the air turbine starter performance test:
[0043] a) Curve showing the relationship between the output torque of the air turbine starter and the output shaft speed;
[0044] b) A curve showing the typical transient process of torque over time at the output transmission of the air turbine starter with maximum impact torque;
[0045] c) Curve showing the relationship between the maximum no-load speed of the air turbine starter and time;
[0046] d) Output torque curves of air turbine starters under various inlet pressures and temperatures;
[0047] e) Curves showing the relationship between airflow rate and rotational speed of the air turbine starter under each inlet condition;
[0048] f) Output efficiency curves of air turbine starters under various import conditions;
[0049] g) Typical starting curves of air turbine starters under each inlet condition;
[0050] h) Performance matching test between starter control valve and air turbine starter under various import conditions;
[0051] During the air turbine starter torque test, the inertial flywheel station and the electric dynamometer station are disconnected. The air turbine starter is locked by the static brake device, and the air source drives the air turbine starter to operate, measuring the static torque of the air turbine starter. This completes one part of the air turbine starter performance test.
