Abstract
Description
[0001] This invention relates to a sunscreen composition comprising (i) bis(ethylhexyloxyphenol)methoxyphenyltriazine (BEMT) and (ii) a combination of two or more pigmentary UV filters as the sole UV filter. The composition exhibits an appealing skin feel and appearance.
[0002] To provide effective protection against ultraviolet radiation, there is a growing demand for sunscreens with an SPF of 20 or higher. However, these sunscreens should also offer an appealing feel and appearance, and preferably even meet the GRAS / GRASE requirements of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act.
[0003] Pigment UV filters (such as inorganic UV filters, i.e., micronized (often also called fine) metal oxides, such as titanium dioxide or zinc oxide; or micronized insoluble organic UV filters) are particularly useful in sunscreen applications due to their ability to increase the sun protection factor (SPF) of a formulation across a wide range of ultraviolet rays. Furthermore, these pigment UV filters are generally considered safe for cosmetic use and do not have the sticky feel that most soluble organic UV filters have on the skin. Nevertheless, problems associated with using such pigment UV filters remain. In particular, the level of pigment powder required to achieve their efficacy and to achieve appropriate (and higher) SPF levels makes products aesthetically and sensorially unacceptable, for example, providing a heavy and gritty feeling on the skin and / or white / blue residue.
[0004] Despite ongoing efforts to develop effective sunscreen compositions containing pigment-based UV filters that offer improved sensory and aesthetic properties (such as reduced skin whitening effects), the problem has not yet been satisfactorily resolved, especially in the case of formulations with high SPF.
[0005] Therefore, there is an ongoing need to develop novel sunscreen formulations that incorporate pigment UV filters, exhibiting improved sensory and / or aesthetic properties while having a medium or higher sun protection factor (especially SPF 20 or higher).
[0006] Surprisingly, sunscreen compositions containing bis(ethylhexyloxyphenol) methoxyphenyl triazine (BEMT) and two or more pigment UV filters as the sole UV filter material have now been found to overcome the shortcomings of the prior art.
[0007] Therefore, in a first embodiment, the present invention provides a sunscreen composition comprising (i) a combination of (i) bis(ethylhexyloxyphenol)methoxyphenyltriazine (BEMT) and (ii) a combination of two or more pigment UV filter substances as the sole UV filter.
[0008] Another subject of the invention relates to a method for improving the sensory and / or aesthetic properties of a sunscreen composition before and / or after application to the skin, the method comprising the steps of: incorporating (i) bis(ethylhexyloxyphenol) methoxyphenyl triazine and (ii) two or more pigment UV filters as the sole UV filter substances, and optionally evaluating their effects. Preferably, in all embodiments of the invention, the improvement is a reduction in whitening effect.
[0009] Therefore, in another embodiment, the present invention relates to the use of bis(ethylhexyloxyphenol)methoxyphenyltriazine for reducing the (skin) whitening effect of two or more pigment UV filters contained in a sunscreen composition after application to the skin.
[0010] In one advantageous embodiment of the invention, two or more pigment UV filters comprise at least two inorganic UV filters. Even more preferably, the sunscreen composition according to the invention comprises at least one titanium dioxide UV filter and at least one zinc oxide UV filter. Most preferably, the sunscreen composition comprises a combination of (i) bis(ethylhexyloxyphenol), (ii-a) titanium dioxide UV filter (or one titanium dioxide UV filter), and (ii-b) zinc oxide UV filter (or one zinc oxide UV filter) as the only UV filter.
[0011] In another advantageous embodiment, the two or more pigment UV filters comprise at least one inorganic UV filter and at least one micronized organic UV filter. Even more preferably, the sunscreen composition according to the invention comprises at least one titanium dioxide UV filter and at least micronized methylenebisbenzotriazolyltetramethylbutylphenol. Most preferably, in the embodiment described, the sunscreen composition comprises a combination of (i) bis(ethylhexyloxyphenol) methoxyphenyltriazine, (ii-a) a titanium dioxide UV filter (or one titanium dioxide UV filter), and (ii-b) micronized methylenebisbenzotriazolyltetramethylbutylphenol as the sole UV filter.
[0012] It should be fully understood that, in all embodiments of the invention, there are no additional UV filters in the sunscreen compositions according to the invention, other than UV filters (i) and (ii).
[0013] Furthermore, preferably, the sunscreen composition of the present invention does not contain colored pigments and / or, in particular, iron-based colored pigments.
[0014] Colored pigments are well known in the art and are used to impart color, particularly in decorative cosmetics. Typical pigments include red, brown, russet, black, and yellow iron oxides.
[0015] Iron-based colored pigments can be iron oxides, such as, in particular, α-Fe₂O₃, γ-Fe₂O₃, Fe₃O₄, and FeO, as well as red, yellow, black, and brown iron oxides, or they can be colored pigments comprising an iron oxide layer as part of an interference colored pigment. Examples of such iron-based colored pigments are listed, for example, under color index numbers CI77499 (iron oxides) or CI77491 (iron oxides). Examples of effect pigments comprising an iron oxide layer are RonaStar RedAllure (INCI = CI77491 (iron oxides), CI77891 (titanium dioxide), silicon dioxide, and mica).
[0016] It is also advantageous in all embodiments of the invention if the composition does not contain (i.e., does not contain) any butyl octyl salicylate (BHB).
[0017] As used herein, the term "UV filter" is well known to those skilled in the art and refers to any substance that substantially absorbs UV-B and / or UV-A radiation, i.e., has at least one maximum absorbance (peak) between 300 and 400 nm. Such substances are listed in Annex VI of the EU Cosmetics Regulation.
[0018] The specific characteristic of the "substantially absorbed" is that it has an extinction ratio (i.e., E1 / 1) of at least 130, preferably at least 150, or even at least 170, for example at least 200.
[0019] The extinction ratio is well known to those skilled in the art and refers to the extinction ratio of a 1% solution or dispersion of the corresponding substance (in the case of pigment UV filters) in a 1 cm quartz cuvette at λ. 最大 The absorbance at that location.

[0112] Experimental Section
[0113] The formulations (O / W emulsions) listed in Table 1 were prepared according to standard methods in the art. The whitening effect of Leneta Black Card was then tested using the following method:
[0114] Apply 300mg of cream to each Leneta Black Card (use 3 cards per formula).
[0115] - Apply the cream using a 60mm applicator blade via the applicator (speed: 10mm / s) to achieve a uniform film thickness.
[0116] - Allow the cream to dry at room temperature for 1 hour.
[0117] -Lab measurements were performed using a Minolta Chroma Meter CR-300, with 3 measurement points on each card.
[0118] - Calculate the average L value and compare it.
[0119] The results are summarized in Table 1.
