Description

[0001] Cross-reference to related applications

[0002] This patent application claims priority to Indian Provisional Patent Application No. 202141021836, filed on May 14, 2021, entitled “TECHNIQUES FOR VOICE CALLPACKET GROUPING”, which has been assigned to the assignee of this application. The disclosure of the prior application is considered part of this patent application and is incorporated herein by reference.

[0003] open field

[0004] Various aspects of this disclosure generally relate to wireless communications, and to techniques and apparatus for grouping voice call packets.

[0005] Related technical descriptions

[0006] Wireless communication systems are widely deployed to provide a variety of telecommunications services such as telephone, video, data, messaging, and broadcasting. Typical wireless communication systems employ multiple access technologies that can support communication with multiple users by sharing available system resources (e.g., bandwidth, transmit power). Examples of such multiple access technologies include Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) systems, Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) systems, Frequency Division Multiple Access (FDMA) systems, Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) systems, Single Carrier Frequency Division Multiple Access (SC-FDMA) systems, Time Division Synchronous Code Division Multiple Access (TD-SCDMA) systems, and Long Term Evolution (LTE). LTE / LTE-Advanced is an enhancement set of the Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) mobile standard issued by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP).

[0007] A wireless network may include several base stations (BSs) capable of supporting communication between several user equipments (UEs). UEs can communicate with the BS via downlink and uplink. The downlink (or forward link) refers to the communication link from the BS to the UE, while the uplink (or reverse link) refers to the communication link from the UE to the BS. As will be described in more detail herein, the BS may be referred to as a B-node, gNB, access point (AP), radio headend, transmit / receive point (TRP), new radio (NR) BS, 5G B-node, etc.

[0008] The above multiple access technologies have been adopted in various telecommunications standards to provide a common protocol enabling different user equipment to communicate at the city, country, region, and even global levels. NR (which can also be referred to as 5G) is an enhancement set of the LTE mobile standard issued by 3GPP. NR is designed to better support mobile broadband Internet access by using Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) with a Cyclic Prefix (CP) (CP-OFDM) on the downlink (DL), and using CP-OFDM and / or SC-FDM (e.g., also known as Discrete Fourier Transform Extended OFDM (DFT-s-OFDM)) on the uplink (UL), as well as supporting beamforming, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna technologies and carrier aggregation to improve spectral efficiency, reduce costs, improve service, utilize new spectrum, and better integrate with other open standards. Further improvements to LTE, NR, and other radio access technologies remain useful as the demand for mobile broadband access continues to grow.

[0047] Detailed description

[0048] The various aspects of this disclosure are described more fully below with reference to the accompanying drawings. However, this disclosure may be implemented in many different forms and should not be construed as being limited to any specific structure or function given throughout this disclosure. Rather, these aspects are provided so that this disclosure will be thorough and complete, and will fully convey the scope of this disclosure to those skilled in the art. Based on the teachings herein, those skilled in the art will appreciate that the scope of this disclosure is intended to cover any aspect of this disclosure disclosed herein, whether implemented independently of or in combination with any other aspect of this disclosure. For example, any number of aspects set forth herein may be used to implement an apparatus or practice. Furthermore, the scope of this disclosure is intended to cover such apparatuses or methods practiced using additional structures, functionalities, or structures and functionalities that complement or supplement the various aspects of this disclosure set forth herein. It should be understood that any aspect of this disclosure disclosed herein may be implemented by one or more elements of the claims.

[0049] Several aspects of a telecommunications system will now be described with reference to various devices and techniques. These devices and techniques will be described in the following detailed description and explained in the accompanying drawings by various blocks, modules, components, circuits, steps, processes, algorithms, etc. (collectively, "elements"). These elements can be implemented using hardware, software, or a combination thereof. Whether such elements are implemented as hardware or software depends on the specific application and the design constraints imposed on the overall system.

[0050] It should be noted that although the aspects herein may be described using terms commonly associated with 5G or NR radio access technology (RAT), the aspects of this disclosure may be applied to other RATs, such as 3G RAT, 4G RAT, and / or RATs after 5G (e.g., 6G).

[0051] Figure 1This is a diagram illustrating an example of a wireless network 100 according to this disclosure. The wireless network 100 may be a 5G (NR) network and / or an LTE network, etc., or may include elements thereof. The wireless network 100 may include several base stations 110 (shown as BS110a, BS110b, BS110c, and BS110d) and other network entities. A base station (BS) is an entity that communicates with a user equipment (UE) and may also be referred to as an NR BS, B-node, gNB, 5G B-node (NB), access point, transmit / receive point (TRP), etc. Each BS may provide communication coverage for a specific geographic area. In 3GPP, the term "cell" may refer to the coverage area of a BS and / or the BS subsystem serving that coverage area, depending on the context in which the term is used.

[0052] A BS can provide communication coverage for macrocells, picocells, femtocells, and / or another type of cell. Macrocells can cover a relatively large geographic area (e.g., a radius of several kilometers) and allow unrestricted access by UEs with a service subscription. Picocells can cover a relatively small geographic area and allow unrestricted access by UEs with a service subscription. Femtocells can cover a relatively small geographic area (e.g., a residential area) and allow restricted access by UEs associated with that femtocell (e.g., UEs in a Closed Subscriber Group (CSG)). A BS used for macrocells may be referred to as a macro BS. A BS used for picocells may be referred to as a pico BS. A BS used for femtocells may be referred to as a femto BS or a home BS. Figure 1 In the example shown, BS110a can be a macro BS for macro cell 102a, BS110b can be a pico BS for pico cell 102b, and BS110c can be a femto BS for femto cell 102c. A BS can support one or more (e.g., three) cells. The terms “eNB,” “base station,” “NR BS,” “gNB,” “TRP,” “AP,” “B node,” “5G NB,” and “cell” are used interchangeably herein.

[0053] In some respects, the cell may not be stationary, and the geographical area of the cell may move depending on the location of the mobile BS. In some respects, BSs may interconnect with each other and / or interconnect to one or more other BSs or network nodes (not shown) in the wireless network 100 via various types of backhaul interfaces (such as direct physical connections or virtual networks, using any suitable transport network).

[0054] The wireless network 100 may also include a relay station. A relay station is an entity capable of receiving data transmissions from an upstream station (e.g., a BS or a UE) and transmitting those data transmissions to a downstream station (e.g., a UE or a BS). A relay station can also be a UE capable of relaying transmissions for other UEs. Figure 1 In the example shown, relay BS110d can communicate with macro BS110a and UE 120d to facilitate communication between BS110a and UE 120d. A relay BS can also be referred to as a relay station, relay base station, relay, etc.

[0055] Wireless network 100 can be a heterogeneous network comprising different types of Base Stations (BSs) such as macro BSs, pico BSs, femto BSs, relay BSs, etc. These different types of BSs may have different transmit power levels, different coverage areas, and different effects on interference in wireless network 100. For example, macro BSs may have high transmit power levels (e.g., 5 to 40 watts), while pico BSs, femto BSs, and relay BSs may have lower transmit power levels (e.g., 0.1 to 2 watts).

[0056] Network controller 130 can be coupled to a set of Base Stations (BSs) and can provide coordination and control over these BSs. Network controller 130 can communicate with each BS via backhaul. These BSs can also communicate with each other directly or indirectly, for example, via wireless or wired backhaul.

[0057] UE 120 (e.g., 120a, 120b, 120c) may be distributed throughout the wireless network 100, and each UE may be stationary or mobile. UE may also be referred to as an access terminal, terminal, mobile station, subscriber unit, station, etc. UE may be a cellular phone (e.g., a smartphone), personal digital assistant (PDA), wireless modem, wireless communication device, handheld device, laptop computer, cordless phone, wireless local loop (WLL) station, tablet, camera, gaming device, netbook, smartbook, ultrabook, medical device or equipment, biometric sensor / device, wearable device (smartwatch, smart clothing, smart glasses, smart wristband, smart jewelry (e.g., smart ring, smart bracelet)), entertainment device (e.g., music or video device, or satellite radio), vehicle component or sensor, smart meter / sensor, industrial manufacturing equipment, GPS device, or any other suitable device configured to communicate via wireless or wired media.

[0058] Some UEs may be considered Machine-Type Communication (MTC) UEs, or evolved or enhanced Machine-Type Communication (eMTC) UEs. MTC and eMTC UEs include, for example, robots, drones, remote devices, sensors, instruments, monitors, and / or location tags that can communicate with a base station, another device (e.g., a remote device), or some other entity. Wireless nodes may provide connectivity to or to a network (e.g., a wide area network, such as the Internet or a cellular network) via wired or wireless communication links, for example. Some UEs may be considered Internet of Things (IoT) devices, and / or may be implemented as NB-IoT (Narrowband Internet of Things) devices. Some UEs may be considered Customer Premises Equipment (CPE). UE 120 may be included within a housing that houses components of UE 120, such as processor components and / or memory components. In some aspects, the processor components and memory components may be coupled together. For example, the processor components (e.g., one or more processors) and memory components (e.g., memory) may be operatively coupled, communicatively coupled, electronically coupled, and / or electrically coupled.

[0059] Generally, any number of wireless networks can be deployed in a given geographical area. Each wireless network can support a specific RAT and can operate on one or more frequencies. A RAT can also be referred to as a radio technology, air interface, etc. A frequency can also be referred to as a carrier, frequency channel, etc. Each frequency can support a single RAT in a given geographical area to avoid interference between wireless networks using different RATs. In some cases, NR or 5G RAT networks can be deployed.

[0060] In some respects, two or more UEs 120 (e.g., shown as UE 120a and UE 120e) may communicate directly using one or more sidelink channels (e.g., without using base station 110 as an intermediary). For example, UEs 120 may communicate using peer-to-peer (P2P) communication, device-to-device (D2D) communication, vehicle-to-everything (V2X) protocols (e.g., which may include vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) protocols or vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) protocols), and / or mesh networks. In this scenario, UEs 120 may perform scheduling operations, resource selection operations, and / or other operations described elsewhere herein as performed by base station 110.

[0061] Devices in the wireless network 100 can communicate using the electromagnetic spectrum, which can be subdivided into various categories, bands, channels, etc., based on frequency or wavelength. For example, devices in the wireless network 100 can communicate using an operating band with a first frequency range (FR1) and / or an operating band with a second frequency range (FR2), where the first frequency range (FR1) spans from 410 MHz to 7.125 GHz and the second frequency range (FR2) spans from 24.25 GHz to 52.6 GHz. The frequencies between FR1 and FR2 are sometimes referred to as intermediate frequency bands. Although a portion of FR1 is greater than 6 GHz, FR1 is often referred to as the "sub-6 GHz" band. Similarly, although different from the extremely high frequency (EHF) band (30 GHz–300 GHz) designated as the "millimeter wave" band by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), FR2 is often referred to as the "millimeter wave" band. Therefore, unless otherwise stated, it should be understood that, if used herein, the terms "sub-6 GHz" and the like can broadly refer to frequencies less than 6 GHz, frequencies within FR1, and / or intermediate frequency band frequencies (e.g., greater than 7.125 GHz). Similarly, unless otherwise stated, it should be understood that, if used herein, the terms "millimeter wave" and the like can broadly refer to frequencies within the EHF band, frequencies within FR2, and / or intermediate frequency band frequencies (e.g., less than 24.25 GHz). It is conceivable that the frequencies included in FR1 and FR2 can be modified, and the techniques described herein are applicable to those modified frequency ranges.

[0062] As indicated above, Figure 1 This is provided as an example. Other examples may differ from the one provided. Figure 1 The example described.

[0063] Figure 2 This is a diagram illustrating an example 200 of communication between a base station 110 and a UE 120 in a wireless network 100 according to this disclosure. [0064] At base station 110, transmit processor 220 can receive data destined for one or more UEs from data source 212, select one or more modulation and coding schemes (MCS) for each UE based at least in part on channel quality indicators (CQI) received from each UE, process (e.g., encode and modulate) the data for each UE based at least in part on the MCS selected for each UE, and provide data symbols for all UEs. Transmit processor 220 can also process system information (e.g., semi-static resource allocation information (SRPI)) and control information (e.g., CQI requests, grants, and / or upper-layer signaling), and provide overhead symbols and control symbols. Transmit processor 220 can also generate reference symbols for reference signals (e.g., cell-specific reference signals (CRS) or demodulation reference signals (DMRS)) and synchronization signals (e.g., primary synchronization signal (PSS) or secondary synchronization signal (SSS)). The transmit (TX) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) processor 230 can perform spatial processing (e.g., precoding) on data symbols, control symbols, overhead symbols, and / or reference symbols, where applicable, and can provide T output symbol streams to T modulators (MODs) 232a to 232t. Each modulator 232 can process its respective output symbol stream (e.g., for OFDM) to obtain an output sample stream. Each modulator 232 can further process (e.g., convert to analog, amplify, filter, and up-convert) the output sample stream to obtain a downlink signal. The T downlink signals from modulators 232a to 232t can be transmitted via T antennas 234a to 234t, respectively.

[0065] At UE 120, antennas 252a to 252r can receive downlink signals from base station 110 and / or other base stations and can provide the received signals to demodulators (DEMODs) 254a to 254r respectively. Each demodulator 254 can condition (e.g., filter, amplify, downconvert, and digitize) the received signal to obtain an input sample. Each demodulator 254 can further process the input sample (e.g., for OFDM) to obtain received symbols. MIMO detector 256 can obtain the received symbols from all R demodulators 254a to 254r, perform MIMO detection on these received symbols where applicable, and provide detected symbols. Receiver processor 258 can process (e.g., demodulate and decode) these detected symbols, provide decoded data for UE 120 to data sink 260, and provide decoded control information and system information to controller / processor 280. The term "controller / processor" can refer to one or more controllers, one or more processors, or a combination thereof. The channel processor can determine parameters such as Reference Signal Received Power (RSRP), Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI), Reference Signal Received Quality (RSRQ), and / or CQI. In some respects, one or more components of the UE 120 may be included in the housing 284.

[0066] Network controller 130 may include communication unit 294, controller / processor 290, and memory 292. Network controller 130 may include one or more devices, such as those in a core network. Network controller 130 may communicate with base station 110 via communication unit 294.

[0067] Antennas (e.g., antennas 234a to 234t and / or antennas 252a to 252r) may include, or be included therein, one or more antenna panels, antenna groups, antenna element sets, and / or antenna arrays. Antenna panels, antenna groups, antenna element sets, and / or antenna arrays may include one or more antenna elements. Antenna panels, antenna groups, antenna element sets, and / or antenna arrays may include coplanar antenna element sets and / or non-coplanar antenna element sets. Antenna panels, antenna groups, antenna element sets, and / or antenna arrays may include antenna elements within a single housing and / or multiple antenna elements within housings. Antenna panels, antenna groups, antenna element sets, and / or antenna arrays may include elements coupled to one or more transmitting and / or receiving components (such as...). Figure 2 One or more antenna elements (one or more components).

[0068] On the uplink, at UE 120, transmit processor 264 can receive and process data from data source 262 and control information from controller / processor 280 (e.g., reports including RSRP, RSSI, RSRQ, and / or CQI). Transmit processor 264 can also generate reference symbols for one or more reference signals. Symbols from transmit processor 264 can be pre-encoded by TX MIMO processor 266 where applicable, further processed by modulators 254a to 254r (e.g., for DFT-s-OFDM or CP-OFDM), and transmitted to base station 110. In some aspects, modulators and demodulators (e.g., MOD / DEMOD 254) of UE 120 can be included in the modem of UE 120. In some aspects, UE 120 includes a transceiver. The transceiver may include any combination of antennas 252, modulators and / or demodulators 254, MIMO detectors 256, receiver processors 258, transmitter processors 264, and / or TX MIMO processors 266. The transceiver may be used by a processor (e.g., controller / processor 280) and memory 282 to perform aspects of any of the methods described herein (e.g., as referenced). Figure 4-8 (As described).

[0069] At base station 110, uplink signals from UE 120 and other UEs can be received by antenna 234, processed by demodulator 232, detected by MIMO detector 236 where applicable, and further processed by receiver processor 238 to obtain decoded data and control information transmitted by UE 120. Receiver processor 238 can provide the decoded data to data sink 239 and the decoded control information to controller / processor 240. Base station 110 may include communication unit 244 and communicate with network controller 130 via communication unit 244. Base station 110 may include scheduler 246 to schedule UE 120 for downlink and / or uplink communications. In some aspects, the modulator and demodulator (e.g., MOD / DEMOD 232) of base station 110 may be included in the modem of base station 110. In some aspects, base station 110 includes a transceiver. The transceiver may include (such as) antenna 234, modulator and / or demodulator 232, MIMO detector 236, receiver processor 238, transmitter processor 220, and / or any combination of TX MIMO processor 230. The transceiver may be used by a processor (e.g., controller / processor 240) and memory 242 to perform aspects of any of the methods described herein (e.g., as referenced). Figure 4-8 (As described).

[0070] The controller / processor 240 of base station 110, the controller / processor 280 of UE 120, and / or Figure 2 Any other component may perform one or more techniques associated with voice call packet grouping, as described in more detail elsewhere herein. For example, the controller / processor 240 of base station 110, the controller / processor 280 of UE 120, and / or Figure 2 Any other component(s) may execute or direct, for example Figure 6 The operation of process 600 and / or other processes as described herein. Memory 242 and 282 may store data and program code of base station 110 and UE 120, respectively. In some aspects, memory 242 and / or memory 282 may include: a non-transitory computer-readable medium storing one or more instructions (e.g., code and / or program code) for wireless communication. For example, when executed by one or more processors of base station 110 and / or UE 120 (e.g., direct execution, or execution after compilation, transformation, and / or interpretation), these one or more instructions may cause the one or more processors, UE 120, and / or base station 110 to perform or direct, for example... Figure 6 The operation of process 600 and / or other processes as described herein. In some aspects, the execution instructions may include run instructions, translate instructions, compile instructions, and / or interpret instructions.

[0071] In some aspects, UE 120 may include: means for configuring a DRX cycle associated with a discontinuous reception (DRX) periodicity, the DRX periodicity being shorter than the SR periodicity associated with a scheduling request (SR) transmission made by UE 120; means for establishing a voice call; means for detecting that the SR periodicity associated with the SR transmission made by UE 120 is greater than the DRX periodicity; means for generating a packet cluster associated with the voice call for transmission within a threshold time at the start of the opening duration of the DRX cycle, based at least in part on the SR periodicity being greater than the DRX periodicity; means for transmitting the packet cluster; and so on. In some aspects, such means may include combinations of Figure 2 One or more components of the described UE 120, such as controller / processor 280, transmit processor 264, TX MIMO processor 266, MOD 254, antenna 252, DEMOD 254, MIMO detector 256, receive processor 258, etc.

[0072] As indicated above, Figure 2 This is provided as an example. Other examples may differ from the one provided. Figure 2 The example described.

[0073] The UE (e.g., UE 120) can be enabled for NR Voice (VoNR), LTE Voice (VoLTE), and / or another packet-based voice call operation, enabling the UE to transmit voice information in packets (e.g., via LTE channels, via 5G / NR channels, etc.). In some aspects, the UE can be configured with multiple types of layers, such as a voice layer and a modem layer. These layers can be implemented by one or more components of the UE, such as a receive processor (e.g., receive processor 258), a data source (e.g., data source 262), a transmit processor (e.g., transmit processor 264), a controller / processor (e.g., controller / processor 280), a memory (e.g., memory 282), a modem implemented by one or more of the receive processor, transmit processor, controller / processor, and / or memory, etc.

[0074] In some respects, these layers may include a voice layer and a modem layer. The voice layer may be implemented by a controller / processor, memory, data source, and / or other components. The low-power audio subsystem (LPASS) of the voice layer may generate and receive voice information (e.g., encoded voice data frames, voice call information, VoLTE information, VoNR information, etc.), provide voice information to other layers of the UE, and so on.

[0075] The modem layer may consist of one or more Non-Access Stratum (NAS) layers, one or more Access Stratum (AS) layers, an Internet Protocol (IP) layer, and an IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) layer, where packetization of voice information occurs. In this scenario, the UE's modem (e.g., implemented by a receive processor, transmit processor, controller / processor, memory, etc.) can retrieve voice information (e.g., encoded voice frames generated by LPASS via shared memory) and perform Real-Time Protocol (RTP) packetization of the voice information to generate packets carrying the voice information (e.g., voice data packets). The packets can be provided to the modem's AS layer, which may include layers 1-3 (e.g., physical layer, transport layer, User Datagram Protocol (UDP) / IP layer, etc.). At layers 1-3, the modem can process the packets for transmission to the base station over the radio access link.

[0076] In some aspects, to ensure that the modem layer and voice layer are synchronized to the UE's DRX operation, the modem's AS layer may provide the IMS layer with indications of one or more parameters of the modem. In some aspects, these one or more parameters may include uplink packet offset time, which can be the amount of time it takes for the modem to receive packets and transmit them uplink. The uplink packet offset time ensures that the voice layer provides voice information to the modem layer sufficiently in advance for the modem layer to wake up, process, and transmit SRs for packets carrying voice information.

[0077] The uplink packet offset time can be based at least in part on the uplink processing parameters of the modem, the wake-up processing time of the modem, and the timing of the SR timing configured for the UE. The SR timing is a time resource in which SRs can be transmitted. The uplink processing parameters can indicate the amount of time required to perform layer 1-3 processing of packets. The wake-up processing time can indicate the amount of time taken for the modem to wake up and be ready to transmit packets. The timing of the SR timing can be determined by the AS layer such that there is an amount of time between the SR timing and the UE's DRX activation duration. In some aspects, the SR timing can have an SR periodicity indicating how frequently the SR timing occurs. The SR periodicity can have a length referred to herein as the SR period duration.

[0078] The UE can be configured with an SR time period duration. The SR timing for the UE can occur at specific times based on the SR time period duration. As an example, the UE can be configured with a 10-millisecond SR time period duration, where the SR timing occurs once every 10 milliseconds (e.g., at 24 milliseconds, at 34 milliseconds, etc.); configured with a 20-millisecond SR time period duration, where the SR timing occurs once every 20 milliseconds; and so on.

[0079] The UE can be configured with a DRX cycle duration and offset, wherein the DRX activation duration for the UE occurs at a specific time to mark the start of a DRX cycle. As an example, the UE can be configured with a 40-millisecond DRX cycle duration and a 36-millisecond offset (in which case, a new DRX cycle begins every 40 milliseconds with an offset of 36 milliseconds relative to another starting point), an 80-millisecond DRX cycle duration and a 17-millisecond offset, and so on. The UE's DRX activation duration timer can be set to a value corresponding to the length (e.g., amount of time) of the DRX activation duration (e.g., 10 milliseconds or another value).

[0080] The IMS layer of the modem can receive indications of one or more parameters and can provide indications of one or more modem parameters to the voice layer (e.g., LPASS). In some aspects, one or more modem parameters may include a transmit reference time (Tx_Ref_time) parameter, which may correspond to an uplink packet offset time indicated by the AS layer. In some aspects, one or more modem parameters may include a receive reference time (Rx_Ref_time) parameter, which may be an indication of the amount of time available for decoding of subsequently received packets or frames. The Rx_Ref_time parameter may be based at least in part on a downlink processing time parameter indicated by the AS layer and a DRX enable duration timer value. In some aspects, one or more modem parameters may include a DRX loop parameter, which may indicate one or more DRX parameters indicated by the AS layer.

[0081] The UE's modem can receive voice information from the voice layer (e.g., based at least in part on one or more modem parameters), generate one or more packets carrying voice information (e.g., one or more voice data packets) in the IMS layer, and provide such one or more packets to the AS layer. The modem can identify SR (Streaming Service) timings at the AS layer, during which it transmits SRs for uplink resources used to transmit one or more packets.

[0082] To transmit packets, the UE's modem layer may transmit a request for uplink resources (e.g., time-domain resources such as symbols, time slots, etc.) and / or frequency-domain resources (e.g., subcarriers, component carriers, etc.) in which the UE can transmit packets. The modem layer may receive uplink scheduling permission to schedule uplink resources for the UE, at least in part based on the SR.

[0083] In some scenarios, the modem layer may be configured at least partially based on DRX cycles, where the UE periodically transitions to an active state associated with the DRX activation duration to monitor (e.g., from the base station) downlink transmissions and uplink grant information and transmit uplink packets, and then returns to an inactive state until the next DRX cycle. In this scenario, the UE's voice layer and modem layer may operate asynchronously, which can lead to reduced performance and efficiency of the UE's DRX operation. For example, the voice layer may transmit voice information to the modem layer at a timing that causes the UE (or the UE's modem) to transition to an active state prematurely to transmit SRs for transmitting packets carrying voice information. Furthermore, SRs may be transmitted at SR timings, allowing the UE to remain active for the duration between the SR timing and the transmission of voice information to the modem layer. As another example, the voice layer may transmit voice information to the modem layer at a timing that causes the modem to transmit SRs prematurely before the UE's DRX activation duration. In either scenario, the UE's DRX operation may be interrupted, which can lead to reduced performance and efficiency of the UE's DRX operation, potentially reducing the UE's battery performance, and so on.

[0084] In some aspects, the voice layer (e.g., LPASS) can use voice call packet grouping to provide voice information to other layers of the UE. This may include storing voice call information in shared memory so that it can be retrieved by other layers of the UE. The UE may utilize voice call packet grouping to align the uplink IMS / Media Access Control (IMS / MAC) timeline relative to the DRX offset and DRX cycle. For example, LPASS may store voice call information in shared memory at least in part based on the uplink packet offset time so that the modem can wake up, process, and transmit SRs for packets carrying voice call information during SR timings that occur during the onset duration of the DRX cycle.

[0085] However, in some cases, the SR period duration can be longer than the DRX cycle duration. Because the SR period duration is longer than the DRX cycle duration, the SR timing may not exist in every DRX cycle. In these cases, the UE may not utilize voice call packet grouping, at least in part, based on the fact that the SR timing does not exist in every DRX cycle. Instead, voice call information can be provided to the modem in a manner misaligned with the start duration of the DRX cycle. For example, voice call information may be provided to the modem periodically (e.g., every 20ms when the DRX cycle is 40ms). Providing voice call information in a manner misaligned with the start duration of the DRX cycle can lead to reduced performance and efficiency of the UE's DRX operation. For example, the voice layer may send voice call information to the modem layer at a timing that causes the UE to prematurely transition out of the DRX sleep cycle to transmit the SR for transmitting packets carrying voice call information, which can lead to reduced performance and efficiency of the UE's DRX operation, reduced UE battery performance, and so on.

[0086] Some of the techniques and apparatus described herein enable voice call packet grouping when the duration of the SR period is greater than the duration of the DRX cycle. For example, the UE may receive configuration information from the base station based at least in part on the establishment of a voice call. This configuration information may include SR configuration information and / or DRX configuration information. When the duration of the SR period associated with the voice call is greater than the duration of the DRX cycle, the UE may determine, at least in part, the amount of time offset from the start of the DRX cycle's start duration based on the SR configuration information and / or the DRX configuration information. When this amount of time meets a threshold (e.g., less than or equal to 5 milliseconds), the UE may provide voice call information to the modem based at least in part on the time of the SR period and the uplink packet offset. When this amount of time does not meet the threshold, the UE may provide voice call information to the modem based at least in part on the start time of the DRX cycle's start duration and the uplink packet offset. In this way, the UE can minimize the amount of time the UE is in active mode, at least in part, based on the UE prematurely transitioning out of the DRX sleep cycle. This can lead to improved performance and efficiency of the UE's DRX operation, as well as improved battery performance, and so on.

[0087] Figure 3 This is a diagram illustrating example 300 associated with voice call grouping according to this disclosure. For example... Figure 3 As shown, base station 110 and UE 120 can communicate with each other. For example, as indicated by reference numeral 305, UE 120 can communicate with base station 110 to establish a voice call via base station 110.

[0088] As indicated by reference numeral 310, UE 120 may receive configuration information from base station 110. In some aspects, base station 110 may provide configuration information to UE 120 at least in part based on the establishment of a voice call. Alternatively and / or additionally, UE 120 may receive configuration information from base station 110 periodically, at least in part based on the occurrence of an event, at least in part based on the establishment of a connection with base station 110, at least in part based on UE 120 requesting configuration information from base station 110, etc. For example, UE 120 may receive at least a portion of the configuration information before the establishment of a voice call.

[0089] In some aspects, such as Figure 3As shown, the configuration information includes DRX configuration information, such as DRX configuration. For example, UE120 can be configured to perform DRX operation such that UE120 transitions between an active state associated with the DRX ON duration and an inactive state during the DRX OFF duration, depending on the DRX cycle. In some aspects, the DRX configuration information includes one or more DRX parameters associated with the DRX operation of UE120. The one or more DRX parameters may include: DRX cycle duration (e.g., which may specify the duration of the periodic DRX cycle of UE120), DRX cycle start time (e.g., which may specify the symbol, time slot, etc., at which the DRX cycle of UE120 should begin), DRX ON duration timer value (e.g., the duration of the DRX ON duration of UE120), and so on.

[0090] In some respects, as well as Figure 3 As shown, this configuration information includes SR configuration information. The SR configuration information may indicate: SR period duration, which indicates the timing of the SR timing configured by the UE 120 (e.g., every 10 milliseconds, every 20 milliseconds, every 80 milliseconds, etc.), SR offset, which indicates the time from which the SR period duration will be calculated (e.g., the number of milliseconds since the start of a radio frame or relative to another reference point), and so on. In some aspects, at least a portion of the SR configuration information may be determined by the UE 120 (e.g., at least in part based on establishing a voice call).

[0091] As shown by reference numeral 315 in the attached figure, UE 120 detects that the SR period duration is longer than the DRX cycle duration. UE 120 may determine the DRX cycle duration based at least in part on DRX configuration information. UE 120 may determine the SR period duration based at least in part on SR configuration information. UE 120 may compare the DRX cycle duration and the SR period duration, and may determine, at least in part, that the SR period duration is longer than the DRX cycle duration based on this comparison. In one example, the DRX cycle may have a length of 40 ms, and the SR period duration may have a length of 80 ms.

[0092] UE 120 may perform voice call packet grouping at least in part based on the SR time period being longer than the DRX cycle duration. As shown by reference numeral 320, UE 120 generates a group of packets (shown as one or more voice data packets) available for transmission within a threshold time period at the start of the DRX cycle's open duration. For example, UE 120 may make the group of packets available for transmission within a threshold time period at the start of the DRX cycle's open duration. In some aspects, UE 120 may generate the group of packets available for transmission based at least in part on the amount of time the SR timing is offset from the start of the DRX cycle's open duration, as referenced... Figure 4 and 5To describe in more detail. As used herein, “generating a packet cluster available for transmission” and “making a packet cluster available for transmission” are synonymous. Furthermore, by “making a packet cluster available for transmission at a given time,” UE 120 can make a packet cluster from UE 120’s IMS layer available for transmission by UE 120’s AS layer at a given time. In some aspects, the UE can generate a packet cluster before a given time and can make the packet cluster available for transmission at that given time.

[0093] As shown by reference numeral 325, UE 120 transmits packet groups to base station 110. UE 120 may transmit SR to base station 110 during SR timing. In some aspects, UE 120 may receive permission from base station 110 at least in part based on SR. In some aspects, UE 120 may receive permission from base station 110 at least in part based on voice call activity and on base station actively providing permission. UE 120 may transmit packet groups on resources identified by the permission.

[0094] As indicated above, Figure 3 This is provided as an example. Other examples may differ from the one provided. Figure 3 The example described.

[0095] Figure 4 This is an illustration of Example 400 associated with voice call packet grouping according to this disclosure. In some aspects, a UE (e.g., UE 120) may communicate with a base station (e.g., base station 110) to establish a voice call (e.g., VoNR call, VoLTE call, etc.) between the UE and another UE, as described elsewhere herein. In some aspects, the UE may receive configuration information from the base station based at least in part on the establishment of a voice call. This configuration information may include configuration information regarding the UE's DRX cycle (e.g., DRX configuration information) and configuration information regarding SR (e.g., SR configuration information). The DRX configuration information may indicate the start cycle duration, DRX cycle duration, DRX cycle offset, etc. The SR configuration information may indicate the SR time period duration for transmitting the SR, SR cycle offset, etc.

[0096] In some aspects, such as Figure 4 As shown, the SR period duration (e.g., 80 milliseconds, as shown) can be greater than the DRX cycle duration (e.g., 40 milliseconds, as shown). The UE can detect that the SR period duration is greater than the DRX cycle duration based at least in part on configuration information (e.g., SR configuration information and DRX configuration information), as described elsewhere in this document.

[0097] In some respects, the UE generates at least one voice data packet (e.g., RTP voice packet 1 and RTP voice packet 2, etc.) associated with the voice call, which can be transmitted within the duration of the DRX cycle's on-time (e.g., the first on-time) (e.g., 7ms if the SR is within a threshold of the on-time (e.g., 5ms); or otherwise 2ms) based at least in part on the fact that the SR time period duration is greater than the DRX cycle duration. Figure 4 (as shown in the image).

[0098] In some aspects, at least one voice data packet is generated to be available for transmission within a first threshold time period prior to the SR timing associated with the first start duration of the DRX cycle. For example, the UE may make at least one voice data packet (here, RTP voice packets 1 and 2) available before the SR timing indicated by reference numeral 410. In some aspects, at least one voice data packet is generated to be available for transmission within the first threshold time period prior to the SR timing, at least in part based on a second threshold time period at the start of the first start duration of the SR timing. As an example, the UE may determine the SR timing based at least in part on SR configuration data. The UE may determine that the SR timing occurs no more than 5 milliseconds before the start of the first start duration. The UE may generate at least one voice data packet available for transmission within the first threshold time period prior to the SR timing, at least in part based on the SR timing occurring no more than 5 milliseconds before the start of the first start duration.

[0099] The UE may transmit an SR associated with at least one voice data packet to the base station, at least in part, based on the SR timing and / or the generation of at least one data packet to allow transmission within a first threshold time prior to the SR timing. The UE may receive permission from the network, at least in part, based on the SR. The UE may transmit at least one voice data packet on the resource identified by the permission. Figure 4 As shown, during the first activation period of the DRX cycle, the UE transmits RTP voice packet 1 and RTP voice packet 2 on the uplink physical uplink shared channel (PUSCH).

[0100] In some aspects, the UE may determine that the activation duration is not associated with the SR timing. For example, in Example 400, the second activation duration of the DRX cycle, as indicated by reference numeral 420, is not associated with the SR timing. The UE may determine that the second activation duration is not associated with the SR timing based at least in part on a second threshold time period during which the SR timing does not begin. In some aspects, the UE may determine that the SR timing is not associated with the second activation duration of the DRX cycle based at least in part on SR configuration information and / or DRX configuration information. Alternatively and / or additionally, the UE may determine that the SR timing is not associated with the second activation duration of the DRX cycle based at least in part on the fact that the SR period duration is at least twice the DRX cycle duration. In some aspects, the UE may receive active permission from the network based at least in part on the activity of voice traffic. The UE may transmit at least one voice data packet on the resource identified by the active permission. Figure 4 As shown, the UE transmits RTP voice packets 3 and 4 on the PUSCH during the first open duration of the DRX cycle.

[0101] In some respects, the UE generates at least one voice data packet associated with the voice call (e.g., RTP voice packet 3 and RTP voice packet 4, etc.) that can be transmitted within the same threshold time period of the second opening duration, based at least in part on the fact that the SR timing is not associated with the second opening duration of the DRX cycle. Figure 4 (As shown in the diagram), because the threshold for the first activation duration has an associated SR. In some respects, the threshold time corresponds to the uplink packet offset time associated with the UE.

[0102] The UE can identify resources associated with a second activation duration that can be used to transmit at least one voice data packet. The UE can transmit at least one voice data packet on the identified resources. For example, the UE can receive active permission from the network based at least in part on voice traffic activity. The UE can transmit at least one voice data packet on the resources identified by this active permission. Figure 4 As shown, the UE transmits RTP voice packets 3 and 4 on the uplink PUSCH during the first activation period of the DRX cycle.

[0103] The UE can determine that the SR timing is associated with the third start duration of the DRX cycle, as described elsewhere herein. The UE can generate at least one voice data packet (e.g., RTP voice packet 5 and RTP voice packet 6, etc.) associated with the voice call, which can be transmitted in a manner similar to that described elsewhere herein within a first threshold time of the SR timing associated with the third start duration of the DRX cycle. Figure 4 (as shown in the image).

[0104] As indicated above, Figure 4 This is provided as an example. Other examples may differ from the one provided. Figure 4 The example described. For instance, the SR period could be 160ms because there might be three DRX cycles not associated with the SR.

[0105] Figure 5 This is an illustration of Example 500 associated with voice call packet grouping according to this disclosure. In some aspects, a UE (e.g., UE 120) may communicate with a base station (e.g., base station 110) to establish a voice call (e.g., VoNR call, VoLTE call, etc.) between the UE and another UE. In some aspects, the UE may receive configuration information from the base station based at least in part on the establishment of a voice call. The configuration information may include configuration information regarding the UE's DRX cycle (e.g., DRX configuration information) and configuration information regarding SR (e.g., SR configuration information). The DRX configuration information may indicate the start cycle duration, DRX cycle duration, DRX cycle offset, etc. The SR configuration information may indicate the SR time period duration for transmitting the SR, SR cycle offset, etc.

[0106] In some aspects, such as Figure 5 As shown, the SR period duration (e.g., 80 milliseconds, as shown) can be greater than the DRX cycle duration (e.g., 40 milliseconds, as shown). The UE can detect that the SR period duration is greater than the DRX cycle duration based at least in part on configuration information (e.g., SR configuration information and DRX configuration information), as described elsewhere in this document.

[0107] In some aspects, the UE generates at least one voice data packet (e.g., RTP voice packet 1 and RTP voice packet 2, etc.) associated with the voice call, which can be transmitted within the first threshold time of the DRX cycle's opening duration 510 (e.g., the first opening duration), based at least in part on a second threshold time (e.g., 5 milliseconds) prior to the start of the first opening duration of the DRX cycle. Figure 5 (As shown in the example). In Example 500, the SR timing occurs during the first opening duration.

[0108] In some aspects, at least one voice data packet is generated for transmission within a first threshold time prior to the first opening duration of the DRX cycle, based at least in part on the SR occurring during the first opening duration of the DRX cycle. The UE may determine, at least in part on the SR occurring within the first opening duration, that the SR does not occur before the first opening duration. As an example, the UE may determine the SR timing based at least in part on SR configuration data. The UE may determine that the SR timing occurs more than 5 milliseconds before the start of the first opening duration of the DRX cycle or that the SR timing occurs within the first opening duration of the DRX cycle. The UE may generate at least one voice data packet for transmission within the first threshold time prior to the first opening timing, based at least in part on the SR timing occurring more than 5 milliseconds before the start of the first opening duration of the DRX cycle and / or the SR timing occurring within the first opening duration of the DRX cycle.

[0109] In some aspects, such as Figure 5 As shown, the SR timing occurs within the first activation duration of the DRX cycle. The UE may transmit the SR to the base station at least in part based on the SR timing, and may receive permission from the network at least in part based on the SR. The UE may transmit one or more voice data packets on the resource identified by the permission. Figure 5 As shown, partly due to proactive uplink transmission permission from the network, the UE transmits RTP voice packets 1 and 2 on the uplink PUSCH during the first open duration of the DRX cycle.

[0110] In some aspects, the UE can determine that the SR timing is not associated with the second start duration of the DRX cycle. The UE can determine that the SR timing is not associated with the second start duration based at least in part on a second threshold time period during which the SR timing does not occur at the beginning of the second start duration and / or on the SR timing occurring within the second start duration. In some aspects, the UE can determine that the SR timing is not associated with the second start duration of the DRX cycle in a manner similar to that described elsewhere herein.

[0111] In some respects, the UE generates at least one voice data packet associated with the voice call (e.g., RTP voice packet 3 and RTP voice packet 4, etc.) that can be transmitted within a first threshold time of the second opening duration, based at least in part on the fact that the SR timing is not associated with the second opening duration of the DRX cycle. Figure 5 (As shown in the diagram). The UE can identify resources associated with a second enable duration that can be used to transmit at least one voice data packet, which is partly attributable to active uplink transmission permission from the network. The UE can transmit at least one voice data packet on the identified resources. Figure 5As shown, the UE transmits RTP voice packets 3 and 4 on the uplink PUSCH during the second activation duration of the DRX cycle.

[0112] The UE can determine, at least in part, that the SR timing is not associated with the third onset duration of the DRX cycle based on the SR occurring within that third onset duration, as described elsewhere herein. The UE can generate at least one voice data packet (e.g., RTP voice packet 5 and RTP voice packet 6, etc.) associated with the voice call, which can be transmitted in a manner similar to that described elsewhere herein within a first threshold time period of the third onset duration of the DRX cycle. Figure 5 (as shown in the image).

[0113] As indicated above, Figure 5 This is provided as an example. Other examples may differ from the one provided. Figure 5 The example described.

[0114] Figure 6 This is a diagram illustrating an example process 600 performed by a UE according to this disclosure. Example process 600 is an example in which a UE (e.g., UE 120) performs operations associated with voice call packet grouping.

[0115] like Figure 6 As shown, in some aspects, process 600 may include establishing a voice call (box 610). For example, the UE (e.g., using communication manager 140 and / or Figure 7 The voice call component 708 described herein can establish a voice call, as described above.
