Abstract
Description
Background Technology
[0001] Restrooms in commercial and residential buildings typically include liquid products such as toilet paper, tissues, diapers, feminine hygiene products, and soap, as well as aerosol products such as air fresheners. These products are usually contained by a dispenser and dispensed as needed by the user. Those skilled in the art have spent considerable time designing dispensers that facilitate the easier dispensing of these products. For example, dispensers incorporating electronically connected dispensing mechanisms can be used to dispense sheets. Such dispensers are often referred to as “manual-free” dispensers because they dispense a portion of the sheet when a user is sensed within the dispenser’s detection area. The mechanism for dispensing the sheet may include rollers and motors; however, the operation of the dispensing components generates noise. Furthermore, during sheet dispensing, the sheet may become wrinkled or misaligned as it passes through the dispensing mechanism, leading to user frustration or malfunction. Additionally, opening the dispenser lid can be noisy, as maintenance personnel often release the lid, which may subsequently fall into the open position. When the lid reaches the open position, this can generate noise and may also create stress on the connection between the lid and the housing.
[0002] In light of the above, an improved dispensing mechanism and components are needed for the dispenser. Summary of the Invention
[0003] Generally, this disclosure relates to a dispenser for dispensing sheet material from one or more rolls of sheet. The dispenser includes a housing having an internal volume for holding a first roll of sheet material. A dispensing mechanism is disposed within the housing to dispense the sheet material. The dispensing mechanism includes a drive roller and a pressure roller biased onto the drive roller to form a gap through which the sheet material is dispensed. The pressure roller and / or the drive roller includes a central portion defining a center diameter D1, a first end defining an end diameter D2, and a second end defining an end diameter D3. The ratio of D1 to D2 and / or D1 to D3 is from about 5:1 to about 1.1:1.
[0004] In the implementation, the pressure roller and / or drive roller includes an outer surface that curves from a first end to a second end.
[0005] In other embodiments, the drive roller includes a first end coupled to a housing and a second end coupled to a motor. The first end includes a spindle having washer material disposed on the spindle. The washer material is disposed between the first end and the housing to provide cushioning between the first end of the drive roller and the housing. Additional washer material may be disposed between the second end of the drive roller and the motor. The washer material may be disposed inside the drive roller. The washer material may also be disposed between a portion of the drive roller and a gear.
[0006] In other example embodiments, the dispenser includes a front cover coupled to a back panel. The front cover is configured to move from a closed position to an open position. The back panel includes a slot having a first end and a second end. The front cover includes a protrusion configured to be disposed in the slot. A back panel magnet is disposed on the second end of the slot, and a front cover magnet is disposed on the protrusion, such that when the front cover moves from the closed position to the open position, the back panel magnet and the front cover magnet are oriented toward each other with the same polarity to stop the front cover. In some embodiments, a metal tube is disposed along the slot of the back panel, and a front cover magnet is disposed on the protrusion, such that when the front cover moves from the closed position to the open position, the front cover magnet moves within the metal tube to stop the front cover.
[0007] In one embodiment, the dispenser may include a roll holding device for holding one or more rolls of sheet material. The roll holding device includes: a first arm assembly having one or more gear teeth; a second assembly having one or more gear teeth; and a gear coupled to a back plate, the first arm assembly, and the second arm assembly. Rotation of the gear causes the first arm assembly and the second arm assembly to move. The first arm assembly and the second arm assembly may be spring-loaded.
[0008] The dispenser may include additional sensors and control circuitry to initiate a dispensing cycle when an object is detected placed within the dispenser's detection area. Additionally, the housing may be configured to hold a second roll of sheet material.
[0009] It also provides a method for dispensing sheets.
[0010] Other features and aspects of this disclosure are discussed in more detail below. Attached Figure Description

[0032] Reference characters are used repeatedly in this specification and drawings to denote the same or similar features or elements as disclosed herein. Detailed Implementation
[0033] Those skilled in the art will understand that this discussion is merely a description of exemplary embodiments and is not intended to limit the broader aspects of this disclosure.
[0034] As used herein, the terms “first,” “second,” and “third” are used interchangeably to distinguish one component from another and are not intended to indicate the location or importance of the individual components.
[0035] Unless otherwise stated herein, the terms “connection,” “fixed,” “attached to,” etc., refer to direct connection, fixation, or attachment, as well as indirect connection, fixation, or attachment via one or more intermediate parts or features.
[0036] Unless the context clearly indicates otherwise, the singular forms “a”, “an”, and “the” include plural references.
[0037] As used herein throughout the specification and claims, approximate language is employed to modify any quantitative representation that allows for variation without altering its underlying function. Therefore, values modified by one or more terms such as “about,” “approximate,” and “substantially” are not limited to specified exact values. In at least some cases, approximate language may correspond to the precision of the instrument used to measure the value or the precision of the method or machine used to construct or manufacture the component and / or system. For example, approximate language may refer to limits of 1%, 2%, 4%, 10%, 15%, or 20%. These approximate limits may apply to a single value, any or both endpoints defining a numerical range, and / or the limits of the range between endpoints.
[0038] An embodiment of a dispenser (including its components) that includes this disclosure may include, consist of, or substantially consist of the following: the basic elements and limitations of the embodiments described herein, and any additional or optional components or limitations described herein or otherwise useful.
[0039] As used herein, the term "comprising" is intended to be inclusive or open-ended and is not intended to exclude additional elements or method steps that do not impede the operation of the invention.
[0040] As used herein, the term "hinge" refers to a connecting or flexible device that connects a portion to a fixed component and allows that portion to pivot or rotate. Hinges include, but are not limited to, metal pivotable connectors, such as metal pivotable connectors used to fasten doors to a frame; and movable hinges. Movable hinges may be made of plastic and integrally formed between two components. Movable hinges allow pivotable movement of one component relative to another connecting component.
[0041] As used herein, the terms "sheet material" and "paper" mean a material that is thin relative to its length and width. Generally, sheet materials should have a relatively flat planar configuration and be flexible to allow for folding, rolling, stacking, etc. Exemplary sheet materials and paper include, but are not limited to, paper toilet paper, bath / toilet paper, tissues, wipes, label rolls, or other fiber, film, polymer, or filamentous products. The terms "sheet material" and "paper" are used interchangeably.
[0042] In one embodiment, this disclosure relates to a dispenser for dispensing sheet from one or more sheet rolls. The dispenser includes a housing having an internal volume for holding a first sheet roll. A dispensing mechanism is disposed within the housing. The dispensing mechanism includes a drive roller and a pressure roller. The pressure roller and / or the drive roller has a diameter D1 around a central portion of the roller and two diameters D2, D3 around a first end and a second end of the roller, respectively. The ratio of D1 to D2 and / or D1 to D3 is about 5:1 to about 1.1:1. In this embodiment, the diameter D1 around the central portion of the pressure roller or drive roller is larger than the diameters D2, D3 around the ends of the roller.
[0043] In other embodiments, the drive roller includes a first end coupled to a housing and a second end coupled to a motor. The first end includes a spindle having a washer material disposed on the spindle. The washer material is disposed between the first end and the housing to provide cushioning between the first end of the drive roller and the housing. The washer material may be further disposed between the second end of the drive roller and the motor.
[0044] In other embodiments, the dispenser includes a front cover coupled to a back panel, the front cover being movable from a closed position to an open position. The back panel includes a slot having a first end and a second end, wherein the front cover includes a protrusion configured to be disposed in the slot. A back panel magnet is disposed on the second end of the slot, and a front cover magnet is disposed on the protrusion, such that when the front cover is moved from the closed position to the open position, the back panel magnet and the front cover magnet are oriented toward each other with the same polarity to stop the front cover. In other embodiments, a metal tube is disposed along the slot of the back panel, and a front cover magnet is disposed on the protrusion, such that when the front cover is moved from the closed position to the open position, the front cover magnet moves within the metal tube to stop the front cover.
[0045] Similarly, in other embodiments, the dispenser includes a roll holding device. The roll holding device includes: a first arm assembly having one or more gears; a second assembly having one or more gears; and a gear coupled to a back plate, the first arm assembly, and the second arm assembly such that rotation of the gear causes the first arm assembly and the second arm assembly to move in opposite directions.
[0046] The dispenser according to the example embodiments of this disclosure can provide numerous benefits and technical effects. For example, configuring the pressure rollers and / or drive rollers as provided helps to recenter the sheet as it passes through the roll gap, thereby reducing sheet wrinkling during dispensing. This configuration also results in more even sheet dispensing and less sheet clogging in the dispenser. The placement of the gasket material as disclosed herein reduces overall noise during operation of the dispensing mechanism. Therefore, the dispenser provided herein can be used in noise-sensitive environments, such as hospital wards. The dispenser can also be equipped with magnets disposed on the back plate and the front cover. The magnets are positioned such that when the front cover is open, the magnets are oriented with the same polarity toward each other to stop the front cover. This provides cushioning when the front cover is opened and holds the front cover in the open position, thereby not applying additional stress to the connection between the front cover and the back plate. Finally, the provided roll holding device improves the centering of the sheet roll, thereby reducing paper jams and uneven dispensing.
[0047] Figures 1 to 2 An example embodiment of a dispenser 10 for dispensing dispensable products according to an embodiment of the present disclosure is shown. As shown, the dispenser 10 is configured for dispensing roll-type sheet products, such as roll-type tissues or toilet paper sheets. The dispenser 10 is particularly suitable for dispensing tissues, tissues, etc. Typically, the dispenser 10 is configured for dispensing multiple rolls of material. The dispenser is not limited to any particular type of roll material or any particular application. For illustrative purposes only, the dispenser is shown in the figure as a tissue roll dispenser.
[0048] like Figures 1 to 2As shown, the dispenser 10 includes a housing 17 having an internal volume 15, the housing being designed to receive one or more sheet rolls 18. For example, the housing 17 may be configured to receive a first sheet roll 18 (e.g., a master roll) and / or a second sheet roll (e.g., a residual roll). The housing 17 may be formed of any suitable one or more materials. The housing 17 may take any form of shape or configuration. Typically, the dispenser 10 may include a front cover 20 and a back plate 30. The front cover 20 may be positioned in an open or closed position. In some embodiments, the front cover 20 may define one or more sidewalls of the dispenser 10. However, in other embodiments, the front cover 20 may form at least a portion, but not substantially all, of the sidewalls of the dispenser 10. However, in other embodiments, the front cover 20 does not form any portion of the sidewalls of the dispenser 10. The front cover 20 may be pivotally coupled to the back plate 30. For example, one or more hinges may be used to pivotally couple the front cover 20 to the back plate 30. In this respect, any conventional pivot attachment mechanism may be used. For example, in some embodiments, a simple rotatable rod is provided and held by a rod holder. It should be understood that any number of conventional pivoting devices are known to those skilled in the art and can be used to pivotally mount the front cover 20 to the back panel 30. In other embodiments, the front cover 20 can be completely removed or detached from the back panel 30.
[0049] The dispenser 10 also includes a roll holding device 22 configured to hold the sheet roll 18. While one roll holding device 22 is shown, this disclosure is not limited thereto. In fact, any number of roll holding devices 22 can be used or incorporated into the dispenser 10 disclosed herein. For example, in embodiments where the dispenser 10 is configured to hold at least two sheet rolls 18, at least two roll holding devices 22, such as a first roll holding device and a second roll holding device, can be used. In some embodiments, the first roll holding device can be used to hold a first sheet roll (e.g., a master roll), while the second roll holding device can be used to hold a second sheet roll (e.g., a residual roll). Roll holding devices 22 are well known in the art and are capable of supporting sheet rolls such that the sheet can be unrolled and dispensed via a dispensing opening in the dispenser. For example, some roll holding devices have arms with small pieces and / or hubs thereon that can be inserted into the core diameter of the roll, thereby allowing circumferential movement of the roll to dispense sheet from the roll. Any known configuration of roll holding device can be used herein.
[0050] A dispensing mechanism 50 is disposed within the housing 17. The dispensing mechanism 50 may be disposed within the module and within the housing 17. The dispensing mechanism 50 includes components configured to dispense sheet 12 from the sheet roll 18 in a controlled manner. For example, the dispensing mechanism 50 may include a pressure roller 80 and a drive roller 100 forming a gap 36 through which the sheet 12 is dispensed. The sheet 12 travels away from the roll 18 and between the pressure roller 80 and the drive roller 100, passing through a dispensing opening 44 disposed in the lower end 45 of the housing 17. Alternatively, the dispensing opening 44 may be formed in the front cover 20 or in both a portion of the front cover 20 and a portion of the lower end (not shown). The dispensing opening 44 may have serrated edges (not shown), or the dispensing opening may carry teeth (also not shown) for cutting the sheet mesh (if the sheet mesh is not perforated). Each end of the pressure roller 80 and the drive roller 100 may be rotatably mounted to the housing 17 or a side panel of the module housing located within the housing 17. For example, a suitable roller holder disposed within housing 17 can secure the pressure roller 80 and the drive roller 100 within the housing. The transmission housing 51 includes a transmission mechanism for transmitting driving force from the electric motor 52 to the drive roller 100 to rotate the roller. Additional control circuitry for operating the roller may be included.
[0051] The detection sensor 56 can be mounted to the lower end 45 of the housing 17 adjacent to the lens 58 (or alternatively, to a module (not shown) within the housing), such as... Figure 1 As shown herein. However, it will be understood that the detection sensor 56 and / or lens 58, or any activation system shown and / or described herein or known in the art, can be mounted in any area of the housing, provided that the detection sensor and / or lens operates as described herein. In this embodiment, the sensor 56 is ideally, but not limitedly, a conventional passive sensor for detecting infrared radiation. Passive infrared detectors are known in the art and are described, for example, in U.S. Patent 4,757,337 to Shikaumi and U.S. Patent 4,960,248 to Bauer et al., both of which are incorporated herein by reference. A passive infrared detector that can be used with the dispenser 10 is model 40623 sold by Eltec Instruments Inc. However, those skilled in the art will appreciate that a variety of different infrared detectors are available, and many available detectors are suitable for use with the dispenser 10. In practice, the sensor 56 is arranged to detect infrared radiation from a user's hand placed below the lens 58, and upon detection of radiation, transmits a signal to activate the motor 52 to dispense a sheet 44 of a certain length through the dispensing opening.
[0052] However, it will be understood that other activation mechanisms, such as capacitive and ultrasonic activation mechanisms, may be used in this disclosure. Capacitive proximity sensors generate an electrostatic field that senses metallic objects and non-metallic materials (such as paper, glass, liquids, and fabrics). Ultrasonic proximity sensors use sensors to transmit and receive high-frequency sound signals. When a target enters the beam, the sound is reflected back to the sensor, causing it to energize or de-energize the output circuitry. Another type of sensor is inductive. In this case, an electromagnetic field is used; however, detection is limited to metallic objects.
[0053] Now for reference Figure 3 An example embodiment of a pressure roller 80 is shown. The pressure roller 80 includes a central portion 81 disposed between a first end 84 and a second end 86. The central portion 81 has a central diameter D1. The first end 84 has an end diameter D2, and the second end 86 has an end diameter D3. The end diameters D2 and D3 may be the same or different. The central diameter D1 is larger than the end diameters D2 and / or D3. For example, the ratio of D1 to D2 and / or D1 to D3 is about 5:1 to about 1.1:1, such as about 4.5:1 to about 2:1, such as about 4:1 to about 2.5:1, such as about 3:1. Therefore, the diameter around the center of the pressure roller 80 is larger than the diameter of the pressure roller 80 at either end. Furthermore, the pressure roller 80 has an outer surface 88 extending circumferentially around the pressure roller and also extending longitudinally from the first end 84 to the second end 86. Figure 3 As shown, the outer surface 88 bends from the first end 84 to the second end 86. Optionally, one or more notches 89 may be provided along the longitudinal length of the pressure roller 80. Spindles 83, 85 are provided on each end of the pressure roller 80 to facilitate the placement and holding of the pressure roller 80 in the housing 17 of the distributor 10.
[0054] Figure 4 An example embodiment of a drive roller 100 is shown. The drive roller 100 includes a central portion 105 disposed between a first end 101 and a second end 110. The central portion 105 has a central diameter D4. The first end 101 has an end diameter D5, and the second end 110 has an end diameter D6. The end diameters D5 and D6 may be the same or different. The central diameter D4 is larger than the end diameters D5 and / or D6. For example, the ratio of D1 to D2 and / or D1 to D3 is about 5:1 to about 1.1:1, such as about 4.5:1 to about 2:1, such as about 4:1 to about 2.5:1, such as about 3:1. Therefore, the diameter around the center of the drive roller 100 is larger than the diameter at either end of the drive roller 100. Furthermore, the drive roller 100 has an outer surface 107 extending circumferentially around the drive roller 100 and also extending longitudinally from the first end 101 to the second end 110. Figure 4 As shown, the outer surface 107 bends from the first end 101 to the second end 110. Optionally, one or more notches 108 may be provided along the longitudinal length of the drive roller 100. Spindles 102, 103 are provided on each end of the drive roller 100 to facilitate placing and holding the drive roller 100 in the housing 17 of the distributor 10.
[0055] Figures 5 to 8 An example embodiment involving drive roller 100. As shown, in Figure 5 In this assembly, the drive roller 100 includes a first end 101 on which a spindle 102 is disposed. The spindle 102 is configured to be held within a hole 104 within a housing, such that the drive roller 100 is fixed to the dispenser 10 but is rotatable about the longitudinal axis of the dispenser. As the drive roller 100 rotates to dispense the sheet 12, friction is generated between the spindle 102 and the hole 104. Therefore, a gasket material 106 is disposed between the spindle 102 and the hole 104. The gasket material 106 provides cushioning between the first end 101 of the drive roller 100 and the housing 17. The gasket material 106 may comprise any type of elastic material, including rubber, such as silicone rubber, styrene-butadiene rubber, butyl rubber, natural rubber, embedded rubber, polyurethane rubber, silicone resin, thermoplastic elastomer, thermoplastic polyurethane, neopentadiene, nitrile, ethylene propylene diene monomer, combinations thereof, and any other suitable rubbery or cushioning material capable of reducing friction and wear between the drive roller 100 and the housing 17.
[0056] Now for reference Figure 6 The diagram shows the second end 110 of the drive roller 100. The second end 110 of the drive roller 100 is configured to couple to a motor 112. In some embodiments, the second end 110 of the drive roller 100 includes a hole 114 into which at least a portion of the motor 112 or a motor housing can be inserted. A gasket material 106 is disposed between the second end 110 of the drive roller 100 and the surface of the motor 112. In another embodiment, the gasket material 106 is disposed within the interior 117 of the drive roller 100. Figures 7 to 8 As shown, the outer surface 118 of the drive roller 100 can be coated with a gasket material 106. Therefore, additional gasket material 106 can extend from the outer surface 118 of the drive roller 100 into the interior 117 of the drive roller 100. This implementation reduces manufacturing complexity by decreasing the number of parts produced and assembled. As shown, the gasket material 106 is disposed within the interior 117 of the drive roller 100, and a motor gear 120 is disposed between the gasket material 106 and the motor 112. The motor 112 can be coupled to the housing 17 via a bracket 113.
[0057] Figures 9 to 14Various example embodiments of the front cover 20 and the back panel 30 are shown. As shown, the front cover 20 includes a protrusion 90 disposed within a slot 92 located in the back panel 30. Figure 9 The front cover is shown in the closed position, while the front cover is... Figure 10 The slot 92 is in the open position. As shown, the slot 92 has a first end 94 and a second end 96. The slot 92 may be circular (including partially circular) or C-shaped (as shown). However, other shapes and embodiments may be utilized herein. When the cover 20 is moved from the closed position to the open position, the protrusion 90 is able to move from the first end 94 to the second end 96 of the slot 92. In particular, as shown... Figure 10 As shown, a front cover magnet 97 is disposed on the protrusion 90 such that when the front cover 20 is in the open position, the front cover magnet 97 faces the second end 96 of the slot 92. A back plate magnet 98 is disposed around the second end 96 of the slot 92. The front cover magnet 97 and the back plate magnet 98 are positioned such that when the front cover 20 is in the open position, the front cover magnet 97 and the back plate magnet 98 are oriented toward each other with the same polarity to stop the front cover 20. This magnet orientation and placement provides a cushioning effect, which prevents the front cover 20 from impacting the bottom of the slot 92 disposed in the back plate 30, thereby reducing the noise generated when the front cover 20 of the dispenser 10 is opened. In addition, by utilizing opposite magnetic forces, the front cover 20 can be held in the closed position without applying additional stress or strain to the components of the front cover 20 and the back plate 30.
[0058] Figures 12 to 14 Another embodiment of the front cover 20 and back panel 30 assembly is shown. As shown, a tube 99 is disposed within a slot 92 of the back panel 30. The tube 99 may include a partially open tube, wherein a portion of the tube is open such that a protrusion 90 of the front cover magnet 97 is disposed thereon within the tube 99. Generally, the tube 99 is formed of any suitable metallic material. For example, the tube 99 may be formed of copper or aluminum. As the front cover magnet 97 moves along the length of the tube 99, the front cover magnet 97 induces a current within the tube 99. According to Lenz's Law, the current creates a magnetic field opposite to the magnetic field of the falling front cover magnet 97. Therefore, the front cover magnet 97 will experience resistance and will fall into the tube 99 more slowly. Thus, as the front cover magnet 97 moves within the tube 99, the magnetic force causes the front cover 20 to open more slowly and may even stop the movement of the front cover 20.
[0059] Figures 15 to 18An example embodiment of a roll holding device that can be used in a dispenser provided herein is shown. As shown, a roll holding device 200 is disposed on the inner surface 33 of a back plate 30. The roll holding device 200 includes a first arm assembly 202 having one or more gear teeth 203 thereon and a second arm assembly 204 having one or more gear teeth 205 thereon. The first arm assembly 202 includes a first retaining arm 220 extending generally perpendicular to the inner surface 33 of the back plate 30. Similarly, the second arm assembly 204 includes a second retaining arm 222 extending generally perpendicular to the inner surface 33 of the back plate 30. A sheet roll 18 is configured to be held between the first retaining arm 220 and the second retaining arm 222. The first arm assembly 202 and the second arm assembly 204 are secured to the inner surface 33 by one or more retaining rods 210. A gear 250 is coupled to the back plate 30. The gear teeth 203 and 205 are then configured to mesh with teeth located on the gear 250. Rotation of gear 250 causes movement of the first arm assembly 202 and the second arm assembly 204. For example, when gear 250 rotates in a first direction, the first retaining arm 220 and the second retaining arm 222 each move away from each other. Figure 15 The first retaining arm 220 and the second retaining arm 222 are shown in the closed position; however, after the gear 250 is actuated, the first retaining arm 220 and the second retaining arm 222 are spaced further apart from each other, as shown. Figure 16 As shown in the diagram, a roll of sheet material with a wider sheet can thus be held in the dispenser 10. Similarly, actuating the gear 250 to move the first holding arm 220 and the second holding arm 222 closer together allows for the adaptation of rolls with a smaller sheet. Advantageously, the gear 250 is configured to move the first arm assembly 202 and the second arm assembly 204 an equal distance with each rotation or turn of the gear 250. This equidistant movement ensures that the roll placed on the roll holding device 200 remains centered relative to the dispensing mechanism 50 and / or the dispensing opening 44. Additionally, it should be noted that the gear 250 can be configured to open the arm when rotated in a clockwise or counterclockwise direction. Each of the first arm assembly 202 and the second arm assembly 204 may optionally be spring-loaded.
[0060] Figures 19 to 20Another example embodiment of a roll holding device that can be used in a dispenser provided herein is shown. As shown, the roll holding device 300 includes a first arm assembly 302 and a second arm assembly 304. Scissor arms 310a, 310b are coupled to each of the first arm assembly 302 and the second arm assembly 304. More specifically, a first end 320 of scissor arm 310a is coupled to a lower portion of the first arm assembly 302, and a second end 322 of scissor arm 310a is coupled to an upper portion of the second arm assembly 304. Similarly, a first end 324 of scissor arm 310b is coupled to a lower portion of the second arm assembly 304, and a second end 326 of scissor arm 310b is coupled to an upper portion of the first arm assembly 302. Scissor arms 310a, 310b can be coupled to arm assemblies 302, 304 by any suitable means, such as fastening with one or more pins 360. For example, the first arm assembly 302 includes a first hole 312 and a second hole 314. Pins 360a and 360b are disposed in the first and second holes for connecting scissor arms 310a and 310b to the first arm assembly 302. Similarly, the first hole 316 and the second hole 318 are configured to be located in the second arm assembly 304. Pins 360c and 360d are disposed in the first and second holes for connecting scissor arms 310a and 310b to the second arm assembly 304. When scissor arms 310a and 310b are actuated, pins 360a, 360b, 360c, and 360d can translate vertically within holes 312, 314, 316, and 318, respectively.
[0061] One or more springs 350a, 350b are connected to scissor arms 310a, 310b. For example, spring 350a is connected between the second end 322 of scissor arm 310a and the second end 326 of scissor arm 310b. Similarly, spring 350b is connected between the first end 320 of scissor arm 310a and the first end 324 of scissor arm 310b. Springs 350a, 350b are loaded such that the spring force moves the first arm assembly 302 and the second arm assembly 304 toward a centerline. Scissor arms 310a, 310b may be connected together about a central portion. For example, pin 360e may be used to connect scissor arm 310a to scissor arm 310b.
[0062] Arm assembly 302 has a first retaining arm 370 extending generally perpendicularly from the inner surface 33 of the back plate 30, and arm assembly 304 has a second retaining arm 372 extending generally perpendicularly from the inner surface 33 of the back plate 30. Sheet roll 18 is configured to be held between the first retaining arm 370 and the second retaining arm 372. The first arm assembly 302 and the second arm assembly 304 are secured to the inner surface 33 of the back plate 30 by one or more retaining rods 380. Scissor arms 310a, 310b can be actuated in a scissor-like motion to move arm assemblies 302, 304 closer together or further apart to accommodate sheet rolls of different widths. For example, when scissor arms 310a, 310b move toward the closed position, the first retaining arm 370 and the second retaining arm 372 move closer together to accommodate sheet rolls of smaller widths. Similarly, as the scissor arms 310a and 310b move toward a more open position, the first holding arm 370 and the second holding arm 372 move further away to accommodate a sheet roll with a larger width. Advantageously, the scissor arms 310a and 310b are configured to move the first arm assembly 302 and the second arm assembly 304, subsequently moving the first holding arm 370 and the second holding arm 372 by equal distances. This equidistant movement ensures that the roll placed on the roll holding device 300 remains centered relative to the dispensing mechanism 50 and / or the dispensing opening 44.
[0063] The dispenser provided herein can also be equipped with any number of operating components. These operating components can be housed within a housing and / or located outside the housing. Suitable operating components can vary depending on the type of dispenser and the product to be dispensed. For example, the operating components of the dispenser can be directly mounted to the back panel of the housing, or they can be part of a module housed within the housing. For example, the operating components can be part of a module that can be easily removed from the housing for maintenance and / or replacement of components without having to remove the entire dispenser from its support surface. To dispense paper articles, such as one or more sheet rolls, the operating components can include rollers (such as pressure rollers, drive rollers), drive motors, gear assemblies, and control circuitry (including, for example, a controller or microprocessor) for driving the paper article out of the sheet roll through the dispensing opening. Additional roll holders, including a main roll holder and a residual roll holder, may also be included in the dispenser. Additional transfer mechanisms may also be present to transfer the dispensing between the residual roll and the main roll.
