Abstract

Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communication and waveform type switching are described. If a user equipment (UE) receives an indication of a switching waveform type after transmitting a first portion of a set of uplink messages, the UE may use a different waveform type to transmit a remaining portion of the set of uplink messages. If one or more conditions are satisfied at the UE, the UE may send a request to a network entity to change the waveform type for uplink transmission by the UE. The UE may determine a waveform type for uplink transmission as part of a random access procedure based on information included in downlink transmission received as part of the random access procedure.

[0001] Cross-references

[0002] This patent application claims priority to U.S. patent application No. 17 / 824,834, entitled “WAVEFORM SWITCHING FOR WIRELESS COMMUNICATIONS,” filed by Taherzadeh Boroujeni et al. on May 25, 2022, which is assigned to the assignee of this application and is expressly incorporated herein by reference. Technical Field

[0003] The following relates to wireless communications, including waveform switching for wireless communications. Background Art

[0004] Wireless communication systems are widely deployed to provide various types of communication content, such as voice, video, packet data, messaging, broadcasting, etc. These systems may be able to support communication with multiple users by sharing available system resources (e.g., time, frequency, and power). Examples of such multiple access systems include fourth generation (4G) systems (such as long term evolution (LTE) systems, advanced LTE (LTE-A) systems, or LTE-A Pro systems) and fifth generation (5G) systems (which may be referred to as new radio (NR) systems). These systems may employ techniques such as code division multiple access (CDMA), time division multiple access (TDMA), frequency division multiple access (FDMA), orthogonal FDMA (OFDMA), or discrete Fourier transform spread orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (DFT-S-OFDM). A wireless multiple access communication system may include one or more base stations, each of which supports wireless communication for communication devices, which may be referred to as user equipment (UE). In some wireless communication systems, a communication device may support a variety of waveform types for performing wireless communication. Summary of the invention

[0005] The described techniques relate to improved methods, systems, devices, and apparatuses that support waveform switching for wireless communications. For example, the described techniques provide a framework for dynamic waveform switching for uplink transmissions at a user equipment (UE). In some examples, the UE may receive first signaling that schedules an uplink message for the UE. The UE may send a first portion of the uplink message set according to a first waveform type associated with a first parameter set. The UE may receive second signaling that indicates that the UE transitions from the first waveform type associated with the first parameter set to a second waveform type associated with a second parameter set. The UE may send a second portion of the uplink message set according to the second waveform type associated with the second parameter set.

[0006] In some examples, the UE may send one or more uplink messages based on the first waveform type associated with the first parameter set. The first parameter set may correspond to a first type of modulation, or a first type of pulse shape, or both. Additionally or alternatively, the first parameter set may include a first set of filtering parameters. The UE may determine that a condition associated with uplink transmission at the UE satisfies a threshold based on sending the one or more uplink messages. The UE may send a request to transition from the first waveform type associated with the first parameter set to a second waveform type associated with a second parameter set. The second parameter set may correspond to a second type of modulation, or a second type of pulse shape, or both. Additionally or alternatively, the second type of parameters may include a second set of filtering parameters.

[0007] In some examples, the UE may receive first signaling indicating a rule related to waveform type selection for a type of uplink message included in a random access procedure. The rule may be associated with information within a type of downlink message included in the random access procedure. The UE may receive the information within a downlink message of the downlink message type during the random access procedure. The UE may determine a waveform type for an uplink message of the uplink message type based on the information included in the downlink message and the rule. The UE may send the uplink message using the determined waveform type during the random access procedure.

[0043] A wireless communication system may include communication devices, such as user equipment (UE) or one or more network entities. A network entity may be an example of a wired or wireless network node that may support one or more radio access technologies. Examples of radio access technologies may include fourth generation (4G) systems such as LTE systems and fifth generation (5G) systems (which may be referred to as 5G new radio (NR) systems), as well as other wireless communication systems (e.g., subsequent generations of wireless communication systems) or one or more other network entities. In some examples, a communication device (e.g., UE, network entity) operating within a wireless communication system may communicate using multiple (e.g., different) types of waveforms.

[0044] For example, a UE may support multiple waveform types for sending uplink communications (e.g., a cyclic prefix orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (CP-OFDM) waveform or a direct Fourier transform spread orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (DFT-s-OFDM) waveform). In some examples, if the received power at the UE is relatively high (e.g., signal fading is relatively low, channel conditions are relatively favorable), then the CP-FDM waveform may be suitable. Additionally or alternatively, if the received power at the UE is relatively low (e.g., signal fading is relatively high, channel conditions are relatively poor), then the DFT-s-OFDM waveform may be suitable. Therefore, it may be desirable for the UE (or network entity) to determine whether to use a CP-OFDM waveform or a DFT-s-OFDM waveform based on the channel conditions experienced at the UE (or network entity).

[0045] In some examples, a network entity may use dynamic signaling such as downlink control information (DCI) to send an indication for a UE to use a particular waveform type. However, in some examples, the UE may receive the indication after sending a portion of an uplink transmission set configured for the UE (e.g., a beam of reference signals to be sent from the UE for channel estimation at the network, uplink repetitions), and the UE may not be able to determine which waveform type to use to send the remaining uplink messages (e.g., in the configured set). In such an example, the UE may be configured to switch waveform types (e.g., transition from a first waveform type used to send uplink messages prior to receiving the indication to a second waveform type) during the time duration used to send the configured uplink message set (e.g., for sending uplink repetitions). For example, if the UE is scheduled to send an uplink message set during the time duration and receives an indication (e.g., DCI) to use another (e.g., different) waveform type during the time duration, the UE may send a portion of the uplink message set using a first waveform type (e.g., a current or previous waveform type) and send another portion of the uplink message set using a second waveform type (e.g., a waveform type indicated using the DCI). Additionally or alternatively, the network may configure the UE to avoid switching, for example, if the uplink message set includes a reference signal to be used for channel estimation (e.g., at a network entity).

[0046] In some examples, the network may instruct the UE to use a particular waveform regardless of the channel conditions experienced at the UE, and therefore, the waveform type indicated using the DCI may not be suitable for the UE. In such examples, the UE may send (e.g., to a network entity) a request to switch waveform types (e.g., to transition from a waveform type configured for the UE to another waveform type). For example, if the UE determines that a condition associated with sending an uplink message (e.g., power headroom, average transmit power, peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR), nonlinearity of a power amplifier at the UE) satisfies a threshold (e.g., exceeds or fails to exceed depending on the condition), the UE may send a request to switch waveform types. In some examples, the UE may send the request using uplink control information (UCI) or a medium access control control message (MAC-CE). Additionally or alternatively, the threshold may be configured at the UE, for example, from the network.

[0047] In addition, in some examples, because the network entity may use DCI to indicate the waveform type to the UE, the UE may not be able to determine (e.g., and the network may not be able to indicate) the waveform type to be used at the UE for a random access procedure performed at the UE (e.g., during or after the random access procedure). In some examples, the random access procedure may be referred to as a random access channel (RACH) procedure. In such examples, rules for selecting a waveform type during the random access procedure may be configured to the UE. For example, the network entity may send control signaling to the UE, the control signaling indicating rules for interpreting information included in a message sent from the network entity as part of the random access procedure (e.g., during the random access procedure) (e.g., a message sent from the network entity as part of a contention-free random access (CFRA) procedure). In such an example, the UE may determine the waveform type based on the information included in the message and the configured rules. In some examples, the UE may use a random access preamble to request a waveform switch during the random access procedure. For example, the UE may use a preamble that may be sent using a specific random access opportunity, using one or more specific frequency resources, or by sending two consecutive random access preambles to indicate a request to switch waveforms.

[0048] Certain aspects of the subject matter described herein may be implemented to achieve one or more of the following potential advantages. The techniques employed at the described communication device may provide benefits and enhancements to the operation of the communication device, including implementing a framework for switching waveform types for uplink transmission at a UE. For example, the operations performed at the described communication device may provide improvements to system capacity and resource utilization within a wireless communication system. In some specific implementations, the operations performed at the described communication device to improve system capacity and resource utilization within a wireless communication system include: configuring the UE to switch waveform types during a time duration for sending an uplink message set (e.g., for sending an uplink repetition); configuring the UE to send a request to switch waveform types; and configuring the UE with rules for selecting waveform types during a random access process. In some other specific implementations, the operations performed at the described communication device may also support reduced power consumption, increased throughput, and higher data rates, among other benefits.

[0049] Aspects of the present disclosure are first described in the context of wireless communication systems. Aspects of the present disclosure are further illustrated and described with reference to process flows, apparatus diagrams, system diagrams, and flow diagrams related to waveform switching for wireless communication.

The wireless communication system 100 may include one or more network entities 105, one or more UEs 115, and a core network 130. In some examples, the wireless communication system 100 may be a long term evolution (LTE) network, an advanced LTE (LTE-A) network, an LTE-A Pro network, a new radio (NR) network, or a network operating according to other systems and radio technologies (including future systems and radio technologies not explicitly mentioned herein).

[0051] The network entities 105 may be dispersed throughout a geographic area to form the wireless communication system 100 and may include devices in different forms or with different capabilities. In different examples, the network entities 105 may be referred to as network elements, mobility elements, radio access network (RAN) nodes, or network equipment, etc. In some examples, the network entities 105 and the UE 115 may communicate wirelessly via one or more communication links 125 (e.g., radio frequency (RF) access links). For example, the network entity 105 may support a coverage area 110 (e.g., a geographic coverage area) over which the UE 115 and the network entity 105 may establish one or more communication links 125. The coverage area 110 may be an example of a geographic area over which the network entity 105 and the UE 115 may support signal communications according to one or more radio access technologies (RATs).

[0052] The UEs 115 may be dispersed throughout the coverage area 110 of the wireless communication system 100, and each UE 115 may be stationary or mobile or stationary and mobile at different times. The UEs 115 may be devices in different forms or with different capabilities. Figure 1 Some example UEs 115 are illustrated in FIG. 1 . The UEs 115 described herein may be capable of communicating with various types of devices, such as Figure 1 Other UEs 115 or network entities 105 are shown.

[0053] As described herein, a node of the wireless communication system 100 (which may be referred to as a network node or a wireless node) may be a network entity 105 (e.g., any network entity described herein), a UE 115 (e.g., any UE described herein), a network controller, an apparatus, a device, a computing system, one or more components, or another suitable processing entity configured to perform any of the techniques described herein. For example, the node may be a UE 115. As another example, the node may be a network entity 105. As another example, a first node may be configured to communicate with a second node or a third node. In one aspect of this example, the first node may be a UE 115, the second node may be a network entity 105, and the third node may be a UE 115. In another aspect of this example, the first node may be a UE 115, the second node may be a network entity 105, and the third node may be a network entity 105. In yet other aspects of this example, the first node, the second node, and the third node may be different relative to these examples. Similarly, references to UE 115, network entity 105, apparatus, device, computing system, etc. may include disclosure of UE 115, network entity 105, apparatus, device, computing system, etc. as nodes. For example, disclosure that UE 115 is configured to receive information from network entity 105 also discloses that the first node is configured to receive information from the second node.

[0054] In some examples, the network entities 105 may communicate with the core network 130, or with each other, or both. For example, the network entities 105 may communicate with the core network 130 via one or more backhaul links 120 (e.g., according to S1, N2, N3, or other interface protocols). In some examples, the network entities 105 may communicate with each other on the backhaul links 120 (e.g., according to X2, Xn, or other interface protocols) directly (e.g., directly between the network entities 105) or indirectly (e.g., via the core network 130). In some examples, the network entities 105 may communicate with each other via the midhaul communication link 162 (e.g., according to the midhaul interface protocol) or the fronthaul communication link 168 (e.g., according to the fronthaul interface protocol) or any combination thereof. UE 115 may communicate with core network 130 via communication link 155 .

[0055] One or more of the network entities 105 described herein may include or may be referred to as a base station 140 (e.g., a transceiver base station, a radio base station, an NR base station, an access point, a radio transceiver, a Node B, an evolved Node B (eNB), a next-generation Node B, or a Gigabit Node B (any of which may be referred to as a gNB), a 5G NB, a next-generation eNB (ng-eNB), a Home Node B, a Home Evolved Node B, or other suitable terms). In some examples, the network entity 105 (e.g., a base station 140) may be implemented in an aggregated (e.g., monolithic, stand-alone) base station architecture, which may be configured to utilize a protocol stack physically or logically integrated within a single network entity 105 (e.g., a single RAN node, such as a base station 140).

[0056] In some examples, the network entity 105 may be implemented in a disaggregated architecture (e.g., a disaggregated base station architecture, a disaggregated RAN architecture) that may be configured to utilize a protocol stack that is physically or logically distributed between two or more network entities 105, such as an integrated access backhaul (IAB) network, an open RAN (O-RAN) (e.g., a network configuration sponsored by the O-RAN Alliance), or a virtualized RAN (vRAN) (e.g., a cloud RAN (C-RAN)). For example, the network entity 105 may include one or more of the following: a central unit (CU) 160, a distributed unit (DU) 165, a radio unit (RU) 170, a RAN intelligent controller (RIC) 175 (e.g., a near real-time RIC (near RT RIC), a non-real-time RIC (non-RT RIC)), a service management and orchestration (SMO) 180 system, or any combination thereof. The RU 170 may also be referred to as a radio head, a smart radio head, a remote radio head (RRH), a remote radio unit (RRU), or a transmit receive point (TRP). One or more components of the network entity 105 in the decomposed RAN architecture may be co-located, or one or more components of the network entity 105 may be located in distributed locations (e.g., separate physical locations). In some examples, one or more network entities 105 of the decomposed RAN architecture may be implemented as virtual units (e.g., virtual CU (VCU), virtual DU (VDU), virtual RU (VRU)).

[0057] The functional split between CU 160, DU 165, and RU 170 is flexible and may support different functionalities, depending on which functions (e.g., network layer functions, protocol layer functions, baseband functions, RF functions, and any combination thereof) are performed at CU 160, DU 165, or RU 170. For example, a functional split of a protocol stack may be employed between CU 160 and DU 165 such that CU 160 may support one or more layers of a protocol stack and DU 165 may support one or more different layers of a protocol stack. In some examples, CU 160 may host higher protocol layer (e.g., layer 3 (L3), layer 2 (L2)) functionality and signaling (e.g., radio resource control (RRC), service data adaptation protocol (SDAP), packet data convergence protocol (PDCP)). The CU 160 may be connected to one or more DUs 165 or RUs 170, and the one or more DUs 165 or RUs 170 may host lower protocol layers, such as layer 1 (L1) (e.g., physical (PHY) layer) or L2 (e.g., radio link control (RLC) layer, medium access control (MAC) layer) functionality and signaling, and may each be at least partially controlled by the CU 160. Additionally or alternatively, a functional split of the protocol stack may be employed between the DU 165 and the RU 170, such that the DU 165 may support one or more layers of the protocol stack, and the RU 170 may support one or more different layers of the protocol stack. The DU 165 may support one or more different cells (e.g., via one or more RUs 170). In some cases, the functional split between CU 160 and DU 165 or between DU 165 and RU 170 may be within the protocol layer (e.g., some functions of the protocol layer may be performed by one of CU 160, DU 165, or RU 170, while other functions of the protocol layer are performed by a different one of CU 160, DU 165, or RU 170). CU 160 may be further functionally split into CU control plane (CU-CP) and CU user plane (CU-UP) functions. CU 160 may be connected to one or more DUs 165 via midhaul communication links 162 (e.g., F1, F1-c, F1-u), and DU 165 may be connected to one or more RUs 170 via fronthaul communication links 168 (e.g., open fronthaul (FH) interface). In some examples, midhaul communication link 162 or fronthaul communication link 168 may be implemented based on interfaces (eg, channels) between layers of a protocol stack supported by respective network entities 105 that communicate over these communication links.

[0058] In some wireless communication systems (e.g., wireless communication system 100), infrastructure and spectrum resources for radio access may support wireless backhaul link capabilities to supplement wired backhaul connections, thereby providing an IAB network architecture (e.g., to core network 130). In some cases, in an IAB network, one or more network entities 105 (e.g., IAB nodes 104) may be partially controlled by each other. One or more IAB nodes 104 may be referred to as donor entities or IAB donors. One or more DUs 165 or one or more RUs 170 may be controlled in part by one or more CUs 160 associated with a donor network entity 105 (e.g., donor base station 140). One or more donor network entities 105 (e.g., IAB donors) may communicate with one or more additional network entities 105 (e.g., IAB nodes 104) via supported access and backhaul links (e.g., backhaul communication links 120). The IAB node 104 may include an IAB mobile termination (IAB-MT) controlled (e.g., scheduled) by a DU 165 of a coupled IAB donor. The IAB-MT may include an independent set of antennas for relaying communications with the UE 115, or may share the same antennas of the IAB node 104 (e.g., of the RU 170) for access via the DU 165 of the IAB node 104 (e.g., referred to as a virtual IAB-MT (vIAB-MT)). In some examples, the IAB node 104 may include a DU 165 that supports communication links with additional entities (e.g., IAB node 104, UE 115) within a relay chain or configuration (e.g., downstream) of the access network. In such cases, one or more components of the decomposed RAN architecture (e.g., one or more IAB nodes 104 or components of the IAB node 104) may be configured to operate according to the techniques described herein.

[0059] Where the techniques described herein are applied to the context of a decomposed RAN architecture, one or more components of the decomposed RAN architecture may be configured to support waveform switching for wireless communications as described herein. For example, some operations described as being performed by a UE 115 or a network entity 105 (e.g., a base station 140) may additionally or alternatively be performed by one or more components of the decomposed RAN architecture (e.g., an IAB node 104, a DU 165, a CU 160, a RU 170, a RIC 175, a SMO 180).

[0060] UE 115 may include or may be referred to as a mobile device, a wireless device, a remote device, a handheld device, or a subscriber device, or some other suitable term, where a "device" may also be referred to as a unit, a station, a terminal, or a client, etc. UE 115 may also include or may be referred to as a personal electronic device, such as a cellular phone, a personal digital assistant (PDA), a tablet computer, a laptop computer, or a personal computer. In some examples, UE 115 may include or may be referred to as a wireless local loop (WLL) station, an Internet of Things (IoT) device, an Internet of Everything (IoE) device, or a machine type communication (MTC) device, etc., which may be implemented in various objects such as electrical appliances or vehicles, meters, etc.

[0061] The UE 115 described herein may be capable of communicating with various types of devices, such as other UEs 115, which may sometimes act as relays, as well as network entities 105 and network equipment including macro eNBs or gNBs, small cell eNBs or gNBs, relay base stations, etc. Figure 1 as shown in .

[0062] The UE 115 and the network entity 105 may wirelessly communicate with each other via one or more communication links 125 (e.g., access links) on one or more carriers. The term "carrier" may refer to a set of RF spectrum resources having a defined physical layer structure to support the communication link 125. For example, a carrier for the communication link 125 may include a portion of an RF spectrum band (e.g., a bandwidth portion (BWP)) that operates according to one or more physical layer channels for a given radio access technology (e.g., LTE, LTE-A, LTE-A Pro, NR). Each physical layer channel may carry acquisition signaling (e.g., synchronization signals, system information), control signaling for coordinating carrier operations, user data, or other signaling. The wireless communication system 100 may support communications with the UE 115 using carrier aggregation or multi-carrier operation. Depending on the carrier aggregation configuration, the UE 115 may be configured to have multiple downlink component carriers and one or more uplink component carriers. Carrier aggregation may be used for both frequency division duplex (FDD) and time division duplex (TDD) component carriers. Communication between the network entity 105 and other devices may refer to communication between these devices and any part (e.g., entity, sub-entity) of the network entity 105. For example, the terms "send", "receive", or "communicate" when referring to the network entity 105 may refer to any part of the network entity 105 (e.g., base station 140, CU 160, DU 165, RU 170) of the RAN communicating with another device (e.g., directly or via one or more other network entities 105).

[0063] The signal waveform sent on the carrier may include multiple subcarriers (e.g., using multi-carrier modulation (MCM) techniques, such as orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) or discrete Fourier transform spread OFDM (DFT-S-OFDM)). In a system using MCM technology, a resource element may refer to a resource of one symbol period (e.g., the duration of one modulation symbol) and one subcarrier, in which case the symbol period and the subcarrier spacing may be inversely related. The number of bits carried by each resource element may depend on the modulation scheme (e.g., the order of the modulation scheme, the coding rate of the modulation scheme, or both), so that the more resource elements a device receives and the higher the order of the modulation scheme, the higher the data rate of the device may be. Wireless communication resources may refer to a combination of RF spectrum resources, time resources, and spatial resources (e.g., spatial layers, beams), and the use of multiple spatial resources may increase the data rate or data integrity used for communication with UE 115.

[0064] The time interval for the network entity 105 or the UE 115 may be expressed as a multiple of a basic time unit, which may be, for example, a sampling period T s =1 / (Δf max ·N f ) seconds, where Δf max It can represent the maximum supported subcarrier spacing, and N f The maximum supported discrete Fourier transform (DFT) size may be indicated. Time intervals of the communication resources may be organized according to radio frames, each having a specified duration (e.g., 10 milliseconds (ms)). Each radio frame may be identified by a system frame number (SFN) (e.g., ranging from 0 to 1023).

[0065] Each frame may include multiple consecutively numbered subframes or time slots, and each subframe or time slot may have the same duration. In some examples, the frame may be divided into subframes (e.g., in the time domain), and each subframe may be further divided into a certain number of time slots. Alternatively, each frame may include a variable number of time slots, and the number of time slots may depend on the subcarrier spacing. Each time slot may include a certain number of symbol periods (e.g., depending on the length of the cyclic prefix added before each symbol period). In some wireless communication systems 100, the time slot may be further divided into multiple micro time slots containing one or more symbols. Excluding the cyclic prefix, each symbol period may contain one or more (e.g., N f The duration of a symbol period may depend on the subcarrier spacing or the operating frequency band.

[0066] A subframe, a time slot, a mini-time slot, or a symbol may be the smallest scheduling unit (e.g., in the time domain) of the wireless communication system 100 and may be referred to as a transmission time interval (TTI). In some examples, the TTI duration (e.g., the number of symbol periods in a TTI) may be variable. Additionally or alternatively, the smallest scheduling unit of the wireless communication system 100 may be dynamically selected (e.g., in a burst of a shortened TTI (sTTI)).

[0067] Physical channels may be multiplexed on a carrier according to various techniques. For example, physical control channels and physical data channels may be multiplexed on a downlink carrier using one or more of a time division multiplexing (TDM) technique, a frequency division multiplexing (FDM) technique, or a hybrid TDM-FDM technique. A control region (e.g., a control resource set (CORESET)) of a physical control channel may be defined by a set of symbol periods and may extend across a system bandwidth or a subset of a system bandwidth of a carrier. One or more control regions (e.g., CORESETs) may be configured for a set of UEs 115. For example, one or more UEs in UE 115 may monitor or search a control region to obtain control information according to one or more search space sets, and each search space set may include one or more control channel candidates in one or more aggregation levels arranged in a cascaded manner. The aggregation level of a control channel candidate may refer to the amount of control channel resources (e.g., control channel elements (CCEs)) associated with coded information for a control information format having a given payload size. The search space sets may include a common search space set configured for transmitting control information to multiple UEs 115 , and a UE-specific search space set for transmitting control information to a specific UE 115 .

[0068] In some examples, the network entities 105 (e.g., base stations 140, RUs 170) may be mobile and thus provide communication coverage for mobile coverage areas 110. In some examples, different coverage areas 110 associated with different technologies may overlap, but the different coverage areas 110 may be supported by the same network entity 105. In some other examples, overlapping coverage areas 110 associated with different technologies may be supported by different network entities 105. The wireless communication system 100 may include, for example, a heterogeneous network in which different types of network entities 105 provide coverage for various coverage areas 110 using the same or different radio access technologies.

[0069] The wireless communication system 100 may be configured to support ultra-reliable communication or low-latency communication or various combinations thereof. For example, the wireless communication system 100 may be configured to support ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC). UE 115 may be designed to support ultra-reliable or low-latency or critical functions. Ultra-reliable communication may include private or group communication and may be supported by one or more services such as push-to-talk, video, or data. Support for ultra-reliable, low-latency functions may include prioritization of services, and such services may be used for public safety or general commercial applications. The terms ultra-reliable, low-latency, and ultra-reliable low-latency may be used interchangeably herein.

[0070] In some examples, a UE 115 may be able to communicate directly with other UEs 115 over a device-to-device (D2D) communication link 135 (e.g., according to a peer-to-peer (P2P), D2D, or sidelink protocol). In some examples, one or more UEs 115 in a group that are performing D2D communication may be within a coverage area 110 of a network entity 105 (e.g., a base station 140, a RU 170), which may support aspects of such D2D communication configured or scheduled by the network entity 105. In some examples, one or more UEs 115 in such a group may be outside of the coverage area 110 of the network entity 105, or may otherwise be unable or not configured to receive transmissions from the network entity 105. In some examples, a group of UEs 115 communicating via D2D communication may support a one-to-many (1:M) system, in which each UE 115 transmits to each other UE 115 in the group. In some examples, the network entity 105 may facilitate scheduling resources for D2D communication. In some other examples, D2D communications may be performed between UEs 115 without involving network entity 105 .

[0071] The core network 130 may provide user authentication, access authorization, tracking, Internet Protocol (IP) connectivity, and other access, routing, or mobility functions. The core network 130 may be an evolved packet core (EPC) or a 5G core (5GC), which may include at least one control plane entity for managing access and mobility (e.g., a mobility management entity (MME), an access and mobility management function (AMF)) and at least one user plane entity for routing packets or interconnecting to an external network (e.g., a serving gateway (S-GW)), a packet data network (PDN) gateway (P-GW), or a user plane function (UPF)). The control plane entity may manage non-access stratum (NAS) functions, such as mobility, authentication, and bearer management of UE 115 served by a network entity 105 (e.g., a base station 140) associated with the core network 130. User IP packets may be transferred through the user plane entity, which may provide IP address allocation and other functions. The user plane entity may be connected to an IP service 150 for one or more network operators. IP services 150 may include access to the Internet, an intranet, an IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS), or packet-switched streaming services.

[0072] The wireless communication system 100 may operate using one or more frequency bands that may be in the range of 300 megahertz (MHz) to 300 gigahertz (GHz). Generally speaking, the region from 300 MHz to 3 GHz is referred to as the ultra-high frequency (UHF) region or decimeter band because the wavelength range is approximately one decimeter to one meter. UHF waves may be blocked or redirected by buildings and environmental features (which may be referred to as clusters), but these waves may be sufficient to penetrate structures so that macro cells provide services to UEs 115 located indoors. Transmission of UHF waves may be associated with smaller antennas and shorter distances (e.g., less than 100 kilometers) compared to transmission using lower frequencies and longer wavelengths of the high frequency (HF) or very high frequency (VHF) portion of the spectrum below 300 MHz.

[0073] The wireless communication system 100 can utilize licensed and unlicensed RF spectrum bands. For example, the wireless communication system 100 can use licensed assisted access (LAA), LTE unlicensed (LTE-U) radio access technology, or NR technology in unlicensed bands such as the 5 GHz industrial, scientific, and medical (ISM) band. When operating in an unlicensed RF spectrum band, devices such as the network entity 105 and the UE 115 can use carrier sensing for conflict detection and avoidance. In some examples, operations in unlicensed bands can be based on carrier aggregation configuration (e.g., LAA) in combination with component carriers operating in licensed bands. Operations in unlicensed spectrum can include downlink transmissions, uplink transmissions, P2P transmissions, or D2D transmissions, and the like.

[0074] The network entity 105 (e.g., base station 140, RU 170) or UE 115 may be equipped with multiple antennas, which can be used to employ technologies such as transmit diversity, receive diversity, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication, or beamforming. The antennas of the network entity 105 or UE 115 may be located in one or more antenna arrays or antenna panels, which can support MIMO operations or transmit or receive beamforming. For example, one or more base station antennas or antenna arrays may be co-located at an antenna assembly such as an antenna tower. In some examples, the antennas or antenna arrays associated with the network entity 105 may be located at different geographical locations. The network entity 105 may have an antenna array having antenna ports of a set of rows and columns that the network entity 105 can use to support beamforming for communication with the UE 115. Similarly, the UE 115 may have one or more antenna arrays that can support various MIMO or beamforming operations. Additionally or alternatively, the antenna panel may support RF beamforming for signals sent via the antenna ports.

[0075] Beamforming (which may also be referred to as spatial filtering, directional transmission, or directional reception) is a signal processing technique that may be used at a transmitting device or a receiving device (e.g., a network entity 105, a UE 115) to shape or direct an antenna beam (e.g., a transmit beam, a receive beam) along a spatial path between the transmitting device and the receiving device. Beamforming may be achieved by combining signals conveyed via antenna elements of an antenna array so that some signals propagating in a particular direction relative to the antenna array experience constructive interference, while other signals experience destructive interference. Adjustments to signals conveyed via antenna elements may include the transmitting device or the receiving device applying an amplitude offset, a phase offset, or both to signals carried via antenna elements associated with the device. Adjustments associated with each of these antenna elements may be defined by a set of beamforming weights associated with a particular direction (e.g., relative to the antenna array of the transmitting device or the receiving device or relative to some other direction).

[0076] The network entity 105 or UE 115 may use beam scanning techniques as part of a beamforming operation. For example, the network entity 105 (e.g., base station 140, RU 170) may use multiple antennas or antenna arrays (e.g., antenna panels) to perform beamforming operations for directional communication with UE 115. Some signals (e.g., synchronization signals, reference signals, beam selection signals, or other control signals) may be sent multiple times by the network entity 105 along different directions. For example, the network entity 105 may send signals according to different sets of beamforming weights associated with different transmission directions. Transmissions along different beam directions may be used to identify (e.g., by a transmitting device (such as network entity 105), or by a receiving device (such as UE 115)) beam directions for later transmission or reception by the network entity 105.

[0077] Some signals (such as data signals associated with a particular receiving device) may be sent by a transmitting device (e.g., transmitting network entity 105, transmitting UE 115) along a single beam direction (e.g., a direction associated with a receiving device such as receiving network entity 105 or receiving UE 115). In some examples, a beam direction associated with transmission along a single beam direction may be determined based on signals sent along one or more beam directions. For example, UE 115 may receive one or more of the signals sent by network entity 105 along different directions, and may report to network entity 105 an indication of the signal received by UE 115 with the highest signal quality or other acceptable signal quality.

[0078] In some examples, transmission by a device (e.g., by network entity 105 or UE 115) may be performed using multiple beam directions, and the device may use a combination of digital precoding or beamforming to generate a combined beam for transmission (e.g., from network entity 105 to UE 115). UE 115 may report feedback indicating precoding weights for one or more beam directions, and the feedback may correspond to a set of configured beams across a system bandwidth or one or more subbands. Network entity 105 may send a reference signal (e.g., a cell-specific reference signal (CRS), a channel state information reference signal (CSI-RS)), which may or may not be precoded. UE 115 may provide feedback for beam selection, which may be a precoding matrix indicator (PMI) or codebook-based feedback (e.g., a multi-panel codebook, a linear combination codebook, a port selection codebook). Although these techniques are described with reference to signals sent along one or more directions by a network entity 105 (e.g., base station 140, RU 170), UE 115 may use similar techniques to send signals multiple times along different directions (e.g., to identify a beam direction for subsequent transmission or reception by UE 115), or to send signals along a single direction (e.g., to send data to a receiving device).

[0079] A receiving device (e.g., UE 115) may perform receiving operations according to multiple receiving configurations (e.g., directional listening) when receiving various signals (such as synchronization signals, reference signals, beam selection signals, or other control signals) from a receiving device (e.g., network entity 105). For example, the receiving device may perform reception according to multiple receiving directions by receiving via different antenna subarrays, processing received signals according to different antenna subarrays, receiving according to different receiving beamforming weight sets (e.g., different directional listening weight sets) applied to signals received at multiple antenna elements of an antenna array, or processing received signals according to different receiving beamforming weight sets applied to signals received at multiple antenna elements of an antenna array, any of which may be referred to as "listening" according to different receiving configurations or receiving directions. In some examples, the receiving device may use a single receiving configuration to receive along a single beam direction (e.g., when receiving a data signal). A single receive configuration may be aligned along a beam direction determined based on listening according to different receive configuration directions (e.g., a beam direction determined to have the highest signal strength, highest signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), or other acceptable signal quality based on listening according to multiple beam directions).

[0080] The wireless communication system 100 may support one or more frameworks for dynamic waveform switching at a UE 115 (e.g., for uplink transmissions). For example, the UE 115 may receive first signaling that schedules an uplink message for the UE 115. The UE 115 may send a first portion of the uplink message according to a first waveform type associated with a first set of parameters. The UE 115 may receive second signaling that indicates that the UE 115 is transitioning from a first waveform type associated with the first set of parameters to a second waveform type associated with a second set of parameters. The UE 115 may send a second portion of the uplink message according to a second waveform type associated with the second set of parameters.

[0081] In some examples, UE 115 may send one or more uplink messages according to a first waveform type associated with a first parameter set. The first parameter set may correspond to a first type of modulation, or a first type of pulse shape, or both. Additionally or alternatively, the first parameter set may include a first set of filtering parameters. UE 115 may determine that a condition associated with uplink transmission at the UE satisfies a threshold based on sending one or more uplink messages. UE 115 may send a request to transition from a first waveform type associated with the first parameter set to a second waveform type associated with a second parameter set. The second parameter set may correspond to a second type of modulation, or a second type of pulse shape, or both. Additionally or alternatively, the second type of parameters may include a second set of filtering parameters.

[0082] In some examples, UE 115 may receive first signaling indicating a rule related to waveform type selection for a type of uplink message included in a random access process. The rule may be associated with information within a type of downlink message included in the random access process. UE 115 may receive information within a downlink message of the downlink message type during the random access process. UE 115 may determine the waveform type for the uplink message of the uplink message type based on the information and rule included in the downlink message. UE 115 may send an uplink message using the determined waveform type during the random access process. In some examples, transitioning (e.g., dynamically switching) between waveform types may result in increased reliability of communication between UE 115 and a network (e.g., one or more network entities 105), as well as other possible benefits.

[0083] Figure 2An example of a wireless communication system 200 that supports waveform switching for wireless communication according to one or more aspects of the present disclosure is illustrated. In some examples, the wireless communication system 200 can implement one or more aspects of the wireless communication system 100, or be implemented at or using the one or more aspects. For example, the wireless communication system 200 may include a UE 215 and a network entity 205, which may be as described in reference Figure 1 Examples of the corresponding devices described. Figure 2 In the example of FIG. 1 , the network entity 205 may be as shown in FIG. Figure 1 Examples of the CU, DU, RU, base station, IAB node, sending and receiving point or one or more other network nodes.

[0084] The network entity 205 and the UE 215 may communicate within a coverage area 210, which may be as shown in FIG. Figure 1 10. For example, UE 215 and network entity 205 may communicate using one or more communication links 255 (e.g., communication link 255-a and communication link 255-b). In some examples, UE 215 may use communication link 255-a to send communications (e.g., uplink communications) to network entity 205, and network entity 205 may use communication link 255-b to send communications (e.g., downlink communications) to UE 215. Figure 2 In the example of , communication link 255-a can be an uplink, and communication link 255-b can be a downlink. Additionally or alternatively, communication links 255 can each be as described in reference Figure 1 An example of the communication link 125 is shown. The wireless communication system 200 may include features for improving communications between the UE 215 and the network entity 205, among other benefits.

[0085] In some examples of the wireless communication system 200, a communication device (e.g., UE 215, network entity 205) may be able to use multiple (e.g., different) types of waveforms to send communications. For example, UE 215 may support multiple waveform types (e.g., CP-OFDM waveforms or DFT-s-OFDM waveforms) for sending uplink communications to the network entity 205. In some examples, the network may configure UE 215 to use a waveform type regardless of the radio conditions (e.g., channel conditions) experienced at UE 215. For example, the network may configure UE 215 to use a waveform type based on a cell in which UE 215 may be operating (e.g., the configured waveform type may be cell-specific), among other examples. In some examples, use of a DFT-s-OFDM waveform or a CP-OFDM waveform may be determined (e.g., at the UE) by enabling or disabling transform precoding (e.g., using a configuration). For example, the waveform type (e.g., the waveform type to be used for uplink transmission, uplink waveform type) may be configured using a random access configuration for random access (e.g., a RACH common configuration, such as using a RACH-ConfigCommon.msg3-transformPrecoding information element (IE)) or using an uplink shared channel configuration for a physical uplink shared channel (PUSCH) in RRC connected mode (e.g., using a PUSCH-Config.transformPrecoding IE). In such an example, the UE 215 may consider enabling transform precoding (e.g., instructing the UE 215 to use a DFT-s-OFDM waveform) or disabling transform precoding (e.g., instructing the UE 215 to use a CP-OFDM waveform) based on the configuration (e.g., RACH-ConfigCommon.msg3-transformPrecoding IE, PUSCH-Config.transformPrecoding IE). It should be understood that the names of the IEs described herein may vary based on the specific implementation of one or more devices (e.g., UE 215, network entity 205, or both), and the examples described herein should not be considered to be limited to the scope of the claims or the present disclosure.

[0086] In some examples, the network entity 205 may use dynamic signaling (such as using DCI) to send an indication that the UE 215 uses a specific waveform type. For example, the network entity 205 may use a scheduling DCI (e.g., a DCI sent to the UE 215 to schedule communications for the UE) to send a waveform indication (e.g., a waveform type indication). That is, the network entity 205 and the UE 215 may support dynamic waveform switching, such as to provide one or more enhancements to wireless communications within the wireless communication system 200. In some examples, the dynamic waveform switching may be performed between a DFT-s-OFDM waveform and a CP-OFDM waveform. For example, using a CP-OFDM waveform may result in increased spectrum packing efficiency. Additionally or alternatively, the CP-OFDM waveform may enable the network to improve the management of resource block allocations. In some examples, using a DFT-s-OFDM waveform may result in a reduction in PAPR, and therefore, a signal is sent with increased power (e.g., relative to a signal sent using a CP-OFDM waveform), thereby resulting in increased signal coverage. Therefore, the CP-OFDM waveform may be suitable for scenarios where the received power at the UE 215 may be relatively high (e.g., signal fading may be relatively low, channel conditions may be relatively favorable, channel conditions may meet a threshold), and the DFT-s-OFDM waveform may be suitable for scenarios where the received power at the UE 215 may be relatively low (e.g., signal fading may be relatively high, channel conditions may decrease). That is, the DFT-s-OFDM waveform may provide one or more benefits for uplink coverage due to reduced PAPR relative to the CP-OFDM waveform.

[0087] However, in some examples, the network entity 205 may send an indication (e.g., a DCI including a waveform type indication) between repetitions of the PUSCH (e.g., PUSCH repetitions scheduled for the UE 215). In some examples, repetitions may refer to multiple transmissions including similar (e.g., identical) information. Additionally or alternatively, repetitions may refer to multiple transmissions scheduled using the same message (e.g., the same DCI message). In some examples, the UE 215 may receive an indication (e.g., a DCI including a waveform type indication) after transmitting a portion of an uplink transmission set (e.g., a beam of reference signals) configured for the UE 215. In such examples, the UE 215 may not be able to determine which waveform type to use to transmit the remaining uplink messages (e.g., in the configured set). However, in some examples, the UE 215 may be configured to switch waveform types (e.g., from a first waveform type used to transmit an uplink message prior to receiving the indication to a second waveform type) during a time duration for transmitting the configured uplink message set (e.g., for transmitting uplink repetitions). For example, UE 215 may receive first signaling (e.g., scheduling indication 220) that schedules a set of uplink messages for UE 215. UE 215 may send a first portion of the set of uplink messages (e.g., uplink message 230-a) according to a first waveform type associated with a first parameter set. For example, the UE may send uplink message 230-a using one of a CP-OFDM waveform or a DFT-s-OFDM waveform. Additionally or alternatively, UE 215 may receive second signaling (e.g., waveform transition indication 225) that indicates UE 215 transitions from a first waveform type associated with a first parameter set to a second waveform type associated with a second parameter set. For example, waveform transition indication 225 may indicate that UE 215 uses a different one of a CP-OFDM waveform or a DFT-s-OFDM waveform, or waveform transition indication 225 may indicate that UE 215 uses the same waveform type that may be associated with different parameter sets. UE 215 may send a second portion of the set of uplink messages (eg, uplink message 230 - b ) according to a second waveform type associated with a second set of parameters.

[0088] In some examples, the network entity 205 may instruct the UE 215 to use a particular waveform regardless of the channel conditions experienced at the UE 215, and therefore, the waveform type indicated using the DCI may not be suitable for the UE 215. That is, the UE 215 may determine that the indicated waveform type (or current waveform type) may not be suitable (e.g., may not provide a suitable PAPR, may not provide a suitable transmit power, or may result in power amplifier nonlinearity). In such examples, the UE 215 may send (e.g., to the network entity 205) a request to switch waveform types (e.g., to transition from a waveform type configured for the UE 215 to another waveform type). For example, the UE 215 may send one or more uplink messages 230 according to a first waveform type associated with a first set of parameters (e.g., a CP-OFDM waveform or a DFT-s-OFDM waveform). In some examples, the first set of parameters may correspond to a first type of modulation or a first type of pulse shape (or both). Additionally or alternatively, the first set of parameters may include a first set of filtering parameters. The UE 215 may determine that a condition associated with uplink transmission at the UE 215 (e.g., uplink message transmission condition 235) satisfies a threshold based on sending one or more uplink messages 230. In some examples, based on determining that the uplink message transmission condition 235 satisfies the threshold, the UE 215 may send a request (e.g., waveform transition request 240) to transition from a first waveform type associated with a first set of parameters (e.g., one of a CP-OFDM waveform or a DFT-s-OFDM waveform) to a second waveform type associated with a second set of parameters (e.g., a different one of the CP-OFDM waveform or the DFT-s-OFDM waveform or the same one of the CP-OFDM waveform or the DFT-s-OFDM waveform with a different set of parameters). The second set of parameters may correspond to a second type of modulation or a second type of pulse shape (or both). Additionally or alternatively, the second set of parameters may include a second set of filtering parameters.

[0089] In some examples, during the random access procedure, UE 215 may receive (e.g., from network entity 205) an indication of multiple uplink messages to be sent from UE 215 during the random access procedure (e.g., repetitions of a third message sent during the random access procedure, Msg3 repetitions). In some examples, UE 215 may receive (e.g., determine) an indication (e.g., of multiple messages to be sent from UE 215 during the random access procedure) using interpretation of a modulation and coding scheme bit field of a downlink message sent during the random access procedure (e.g., a second message sent during the random access procedure, Msg2 indicating an initial Msg3) or using DCI that schedules multiple uplink messages to be sent from UE 215 during the random access procedure (e.g., repetitions of a third message sent during the random access procedure, Msg3 repetitions). That is, the third message (e.g., Msg3 repetition) sent from UE 215 as part of the random access procedure and the interpretation of the MCS bit field of the second message (e.g., Msg2) sent from network entity 205 can be conditioned on, for example, a UE request sent from UE 215 using a physical random access channel (PRACH) preamble (e.g., using a subset of the PRACH preamble). In some examples, the UE request (e.g., to transmit a repetition of the third message) can implicitly indicate one or more capabilities of UE 215 (e.g., uplink transmission capabilities).

[0090] In some examples, the UE 215 may perform a random access procedure (or multiple random access procedures) as part of a beam failure recovery procedure or a handover procedure. For example, the UE 215 may perform a random access procedure in response to experiencing a connection failure (e.g., a radio link failure) between the UE 215 and the network entity 205. In such an example, the received power at the UE 215 may be relatively low (e.g., signal fading may be relatively high, channel conditions may be reduced). Therefore, waveform switching (e.g., switching to a DFT-S-OFDM waveform) may provide coverage enhancement for uplink messages sent as part of the random access procedure (e.g., repeated, contention-free random access PUSCH transmissions of a third message sent during the random access procedure). However, because the network entity 205 may use DCI to indicate the waveform type to the UE 215, the UE 215 may not be able to determine (e.g., and the network entity 205 may not be able to indicate) (e.g., during or after the random access procedure performed at the UE 215) the waveform type to be used for uplink transmission at the UE 215.

[0091] In some examples, rules for selecting a waveform type during a random access procedure may be configured to the UE 215 (e.g., from the network entity 205). For example, the network entity 205 may send control signaling (e.g., including a selection rule indication 245) to the UE 215, the control signaling indicating a rule for interpreting information included in a message (e.g., a downlink message 250) sent from the network entity 205 as part of a random access procedure (e.g., during the random access procedure) (e.g., a second message, Msg2, sent from the network entity 205 as part of a contention-free random access procedure). In such an example, the UE 215 may determine the waveform type based on the information included in the message and the configured rules. In some examples, the UE 215 may use a random access preamble (e.g., a PRACH preamble) to request a waveform switch during a random access procedure. For example, the UE 215 may indicate a request to switch waveforms by using a specific random access opportunity, using one or more specific frequency resources to send a preamble, or by sending multiple (e.g., two) consecutive random access preambles. In some examples, transitioning between waveform types (eg, dynamically switching) may increase reliability of communications between UE 215 and network entity 205, among other possible benefits.

[0092] Figure 3 An example of a process flow 300 for supporting waveform switching for wireless communication according to one or more aspects of the present disclosure is illustrated. The process flow 300 may implement one or more aspects of the wireless communication system 100 and the wireless communication system 200, or may be implemented at or using the one or more aspects. For example, the process flow 300 may include a UE 315 and a network entity 305, which may be as described in reference to Figure 1 and Figure 2 Examples of the corresponding devices described. Figure 3 In the example of FIG. 1 , the network entity 305 may be as shown in FIG. Figure 1 305). In the following description of process flow 300, operations between UE 315 and network entity 305 may be performed in a different order or at a different time than shown. Some operations may also be omitted from process flow 300, and other operations may be added to process flow 300.

[0093] like Figure 3As illustrated by the example of , UE 315 may be configured to switch waveform types during a time duration for sending an uplink message set (e.g., for sending uplink repetitions). For example, UE 315 may be configured (e.g., scheduled) to send an uplink message set (e.g., a set of co-scheduled uplink messages, a set of repetitions of PUSCH transmissions, or a set of repetitions of physical uplink control channel (PUCCH) transmissions, or any combination thereof). In such an example, UE 315 may utilize one waveform type to send a subset (e.g., a portion) of the configured uplink message set (e.g., repetitions of PUSCH transmissions, or repetitions of PUCCH transmissions, or both), and utilize another waveform type to send another subset (e.g., of the configured uplink message set). For example, UE 315 may utilize a CP-OFDM waveform to send a subset of repetitions of PUSCH transmissions (or PUCCH transmissions), and utilize a DFT-s-OFDM waveform to send another subset. Additionally or alternatively, the UE 315 may transmit a subset of repetitions of a PUSCH transmission (or a PUCCH transmission) using a set of parameters (e.g., associated with one of a CP-OFDM waveform or a DFT-s-OFDM waveform) and transmit another subset of repetitions using another set of parameters (e.g., associated with the same one of a CP-OFDM waveform or a DFT-s-OFDM waveform). That is, the UE 315 may use the same waveform type and different sets of parameters for the two subsets of repetitions. For example, the UE 315 may apply different pulse shaping (e.g., two different pulse shapes) or different filters (or both) to the transmissions of multiple (e.g., two) subsets of PUSCH (or PUCCH) repetitions.

[0094] For example, at 320, UE 315 may receive first signaling (eg, from network entity 305) including a scheduling indication. The scheduling indication may be as described in reference Figure 2 For example, the scheduling indication may schedule an uplink message set for UE 315. At 325, UE 315 may send a first portion of an uplink message set (e.g., scheduled for UE 315 at 320) according to a first waveform type associated with a first set of parameters. At 330, UE 315 may receive second signaling including a waveform transition indication. The waveform transition indication may be as described in reference to Figure 2 Examples of the waveform transition indication. For example, the waveform transition indication may indicate that the UE 315 transitions from a first waveform type associated with a first parameter set to a second waveform type associated with a second parameter set.

[0095] In some examples (e.g., in response to receiving the waveform transition indication at 330), the UE 315 may switch the waveform type used for the remaining uplink messages in the set of uplink messages (e.g., for the transmission of the remaining PUSCH repetitions). That is, if a waveform transition indication (e.g., a dynamic indication of waveform switching) is received between uplink message transmissions (e.g., between PUSCH repetitions), the UE 315 may transition from a first waveform type to a second waveform type (e.g., indicated using the waveform transition indication) such that the UE 315 may transmit the remaining uplink messages in the set of uplink messages (e.g., scheduled using the scheduling indication sent from the network entity 305 at 320) using the second waveform type. In some examples, receiving the waveform transition indication (e.g., at the UE 315) may trigger activation of a timer (e.g., a processing timer) at the UE 315. For example, in response to receiving the waveform transition indication (e.g., at 330), the UE 315 may apply a processing time (e.g., associated with joint channel estimation) before switching waveform types. That is, the UE 315 may transition from the first waveform type to the second waveform type based on the time elapsed since the second signaling was received at the UE satisfying a threshold (eg, processing time).

[0096] In some examples, an indication (e.g., from the network entity 305) or a determination (e.g., at the UE 315) of joint channel estimation (e.g., for performing channel estimation) may affect the timing of waveform switching (e.g., at the UE 315). For example, the UE 315 may adjust the timing of waveform switching to avoid dividing (e.g., splitting, interrupting) a PUSCH DMRS bundle (e.g., to avoid waveform switching between repetitions that may be used for joint channel estimation). In such an example, the timing of waveform switching may depend on a time domain window (TDW) for uplink DMRS bundling. For example, the UE 315 may determine that a first portion of an uplink message set is associated with a reference signal (e.g., DMRS) set for performing channel estimation, and therefore may wait until after the UE 315 sends the first portion of the uplink message set (e.g., PUSCH DMRS bundle) before transitioning from a first waveform type to a second waveform type. At 335 (eg, after transitioning from the first waveform type to the second waveform type), the UE 315 may send a second portion of the set of uplink messages in accordance with the second waveform type associated with the second set of parameters.

[0097] In some examples, the use of multiple waveform types (or multiple parameter sets) for multiple parts (e.g., different subsets) of an uplink message set (e.g., a scheduled uplink message set) can be based on one or more capabilities of the UE 315. That is, a hybrid transmission of an uplink message (e.g., a PUSCH repetition) can be applied according to the UE capabilities, in which a part of the uplink message (e.g., a subset of the repetitions) can be transmitted using a waveform type, and another part of the uplink message (e.g., another subset of the repetitions) can be transmitted using another waveform. In some examples, the UE 315 can send an indication of the UE capability (or multiple UE capabilities) associated with the waveform type switch at the UE 315 to the network entity 305. In such examples, the UE 315 can receive a second signaling (e.g., a waveform transition indication) based on the indicated UE capabilities. In some examples, the UE capability indication can be sent to the network entity 305 by UE, by frequency band, by frequency range, or any combination thereof (e.g., from the UE 315 or one or more other UEs).

[0098] Additionally or alternatively, hybrid transmission of PUSCH repetitions may be applied according to a configuration indicated from the network entity 305 (e.g., gNB) to the UE 315. For example, the UE 315 may receive third signaling indicating that the UE 315 may be allowed to send different parts of the uplink message set (e.g., scheduled for the UE 315 at 320) according to different waveform types (e.g., perform hybrid transmission of PUSCH repetitions). In such an example, the UE 315 may send a second part of the uplink message set according to the second waveform type (e.g., at 335) based on the third signaling (e.g., indicating that the UE is allowed to send different parts of the uplink message set according to different waveform types). In some examples, the network entity 305 may configure the UE 315 (e.g., configure it to send different parts of the uplink message set according to different waveform types) using control signaling (e.g., by enabling a one-bit flag included in the RRC signaling). In some examples, such configuration may be per UE, per frequency band, per frequency range, or any combination thereof. In some examples, configuring UE 315 to transition between waveform types (e.g., dynamically switch) may increase reliability of communications between UE 315 and network entity 305, among other possible benefits.

[0099] Figure 4One or more aspects of a process flow 400 for supporting waveform switching for wireless communication according to one or more aspects of the present disclosure are illustrated. The process flow 400 may implement one or more aspects of the wireless communication system 100 and the wireless communication system 200, or may be implemented at or using the one or more aspects. For example, the process flow 400 may include a UE 415 and a network entity 405, which may be as described in reference Figure 1 and Figure 2 Examples of the corresponding devices described. Figure 4 In the example of FIG. 1 , the network entity 405 may be as shown in FIG. Figure 1 405). In the following description of process flow 400, operations between UE 415 and network entity 405 may be performed in a different order or at a different time than shown. Some operations may also be omitted from process flow 400, and other operations may be added to process flow 400.

[0100] like Figure 4 As illustrated in the example of , UE 415 may request a waveform switch for uplink transmission. In some examples, the request may be associated with (e.g., for) a switch between a CP-OFDM waveform and a DFT-s-OFDM waveform (or any other type of waveform supported at UE 415). Additionally or alternatively, the request may be associated with (e.g., for) a switch between different pulse shapes, or filters, or both, and other examples of parameters for sending uplink messages.

[0101] For example, at 420, UE 415 may send one or more uplink messages according to a first waveform type associated with a first set of parameters. In some examples, the first set of parameters may be as described in reference Figure 2 Examples of the first parameter set. For example, the first parameter set may correspond to a first type of modulation or a first type of pulse shape (or both). Additionally or alternatively, the first parameter set may include a first set of filtering parameters. At 425, UE 415 may determine (e.g., based on sending one or more uplink messages at 420) that an uplink message sending condition satisfies a threshold. The uplink message sending condition may be as described in reference Figure 2The example of the uplink message sending condition described above. For example, the uplink message sending condition may be associated with the uplink transmission at the UE 415. Additionally or alternatively, the uplink message sending condition may be an example of the power headroom of the UE 415. That is, the UE 415 may determine that the power headroom of the UE has exceeded (e.g., become greater than or less than) a threshold. In such an example, the UE 415 may request a transition from the first waveform type to the second waveform type based on determining that the power headroom of the UE 415 has exceeded the threshold.

[0102] In some examples, UE 415 may request waveform switching based on a PAPR constraint of UE 415. Additionally or alternatively, UE 415 may request waveform switching based on an average transmit power (e.g., of an uplink message sent at 420), power amplifier nonlinearity, or a power headroom of UE 415, among other possible examples. That is, the uplink message transmission conditions may include a nonlinearity metric associated with a power amplifier at UE 415, a power headroom, a PAPR, an average transmit power, or any combination thereof.

[0103] For example, at 430, UE 415 may send a waveform transition request to network entity 405 (eg, based on the determination at 425). The waveform transition request may be as described in reference Figure 2 For example, the waveform transition request may include a request (e.g., of UE 415) to transition from a first waveform type associated with a first parameter set to a second waveform type associated with a second parameter set. The second parameter set may be as described in reference Figure 2 Examples of the second set of parameters. For example, the second set of parameters may correspond to a second type of modulation or a second type of pulse shape (or both). Additionally or alternatively, the second set of parameters may include a second set of filtering parameters.

[0104] In some examples, waveform switching (e.g., at UE 415 in response to sending a waveform transition request at 430) may be applied to PUSCH transmissions or PUCCH transmissions (or both). Additionally or alternatively, in some examples, whether UE 415 may apply waveform switching to PUSCH transmissions or PUCCH transmissions (or both) may be based on a configuration. For example, UE 415 may identify a configuration for waveform type selection at UE 415, and transition from a first waveform type to a second waveform type (e.g., perform waveform switching) based on the configuration and based on sending a waveform transition request (e.g., sent at 430).

[0105] For example (e.g., depending on the configuration), the request for waveform switching (e.g., the waveform transition request sent at 430) may be sent using the PUCCH or as UCI on the PUSCH. Additionally or alternatively, the request for waveform switching (e.g., the waveform transition request sent at 430) may be sent using an uplink MAC CE. In some examples, the network entity 405 may determine (e.g., implicitly interpret) the request for waveform switching (e.g., from the UE 415) based on other signaling (e.g., other signals such as the power headroom of the uplink message sent at 420). Additionally or alternatively, the request for waveform switching (e.g., the waveform transition request sent at 430) may be indicated (e.g., from the UE 415) by frequency range, by frequency band, by bandwidth portion, by carrier component, or any combination thereof.

[0106] In some examples, the request for waveform switching (e.g., the waveform transition request sent at 430) may be granted by an indication from the network entity 405 (e.g., gNB) to the UE 415. For example, the UE 415 may receive a grant to transition from a first waveform type to a second waveform type (e.g., in response to sending the waveform transition request at 430). In such an example, the UE 415 may transition from the first waveform type to the second waveform type based on receiving the grant. Additionally or alternatively, the request for waveform switching (e.g., the waveform transition request sent at 430) may be granted (e.g., automatically) after a certain time duration. For example, the UE 415 may send the request according to a configuration, which may include a time duration associated with transitioning between waveform types. In some examples, the time duration may be measured from the time the UE 415 sends the waveform transition request (e.g., at 430). In such an example, transitioning from the first waveform type to the second waveform type may occur after (eg, at least) the duration of time has elapsed since sending the waveform transition request (eg, at 430).

[0107] In some examples, granting of a waveform switching request (e.g., a waveform transition request) can be conditional on a grant (e.g., a configured grant) from a network entity 405 (e.g., a gNB), such as via RRC signaling. In some examples, granting can be based on one or more criteria (e.g., configured criteria), which can include a threshold (e.g., a configured threshold) of a reported value or measurement (e.g., a reported power headroom) of a parameter (e.g., a transmit parameter) associated with the UE 415. In some examples, sending a request to switch waveform types (e.g., to transition from a first waveform type to a second waveform type) can increase reliability of communications between the UE 415 and the network entity 405, among other possible benefits.

[0108] Figure 5An example of a process flow 500 for supporting waveform switching for wireless communication according to one or more aspects of the present disclosure is illustrated. The process flow 500 may implement one or more aspects of the wireless communication system 100 and the wireless communication system 200, or may be implemented at or using the one or more aspects. For example, the process flow 500 may include a UE 515 and a network entity 505, which may be as described in reference Figure 1 and Figure 2 Examples of the corresponding devices described. Figure 5 In the example of FIG. 1 , the network entity 505 may be as shown in FIG. Figure 1 160, DU 165, or RU 170 (or one or more other components of the network entity 505). In the following description of the process flow 500, the operations between the UE 515 and the network entity 505 may be performed in a different order or at a different time than shown. Some operations may also be omitted from the process flow 500, and other operations may be added to the process flow 500.

[0109] like Figure 5 As illustrated in the example of , the rules for selecting a waveform type during a random access procedure (e.g., CFRA) may be configured to the UE 515 (e.g., using an indication sent from the network entity 505). For example, the network entity 505 (e.g., gNB) may configure the UE 515 (e.g., using RRC signaling) to determine the waveform type (e.g., CFRA PUSCH waveform) based on the content included in the message (e.g., Msg2, Msg2 PDCCH, or both) sent from the network entity 505 during the random access procedure. That is, the determination of the waveform type (e.g., CFRA PUSCH waveform) used to send the uplink message may be performed by interpreting the downlink message (e.g., a bit field of the downlink message) (e.g., Msg2, Msg2 PDCCH, or both) sent from the network entity 505 during the random access procedure. In some examples, the interpretation may be based on, for example, a configuration indicated from the network entity 505 to the UE 515 (e.g., RRC configuration).

[0110] For example, at 520, UE 515 may receive first signaling including a selection rule indication. The selection rule indication may be as shown in FIG. Figure 2 Examples of the selection rule indication. For example, the selection rule indication may indicate a rule related to waveform type selection for a type of uplink message (e.g., CFRA PUSCH) included in a random access procedure. In some examples, the rule may be associated with information within a type of downlink message (e.g., Msg2 or Msg2 PDCCH) included in a random access procedure.

[0111] At 525, the UE 515 may receive information within a downlink message of the downlink message type (e.g., during a random access procedure). For example, (e.g., at 525), the UE 515 may receive a downlink message that may be a second message of the random access procedure (e.g., Msg2, Msg2 PDCCH) and may include information related to a rule (e.g., indicated using a selection rule indication sent at 520). At 530, the UE 515 may determine a waveform type for an uplink message (e.g., of the uplink message type or another uplink message type) based on the information included in the downlink message (e.g., sent at 525) and the rule (e.g., indicated using a selection rule indication sent at 520). At 535, the UE 515 may send an uplink message (e.g., CFRA PUSCH) using the determined waveform type (e.g., during a random access procedure).

[0112] In some examples, waveform switching for an uplink message sent at 535 (e.g., dynamic waveform switching for CFRA PUSCH) or interpretation of a downlink message received at 525 (e.g., interpretation of a Msg2 bit field of a waveform switching indication) may be applicable (e.g., applicable to UE 515) depending on the use case of a random access procedure (e.g., CFRA), such as whether the random access procedure may be performed at UE 515 for beam failure recovery (e.g., as part of a beam failure recovery procedure) or for handover (e.g., as part of a handover procedure). Additionally or alternatively, waveform switching for an uplink message sent at 535 (e.g., dynamic waveform switching for CFRA PUSCH) or interpretation of a downlink message received at 525 (e.g., interpretation of a Msg2 bit field of a waveform switching indication) may be conditional on a request from UE 515. For example, UE 515 may send an indication of a request to transition an uplink message type from a first waveform type to a second waveform type. In such an example, UE 515 may receive a selection rule indication based on sending the request (eg, at 520).

[0113] In some examples, a request for a transition from a first waveform type to a second waveform type for an uplink message type (e.g., a request for dynamic waveform switching) may be indicated using one or more specific RACH opportunities (e.g., RACH opportunities different from RACH opportunities that may be configured for UE 515 to send PRACH preambles). That is, UE 515 may indicate a request to transition from a first waveform type to a second waveform type by sending a random access preamble (e.g., a CFRA PRACH preamble that is the same as a CFRA PRACH preamble that may be configured for UE 515) using one or more specific RACH opportunities. Additionally or alternatively, a request for a transition from a first waveform type to a second waveform type for an uplink message type (e.g., a request for dynamic waveform switching) may be indicated using one or more specific frequency resources (e.g., of a PRACH) or a specific bandwidth portion (or both) for sending a random access preamble (e.g., a PRACH transmission).

[0114] In some examples, a request for a transition from a first waveform type to a second waveform type for an uplink message type (e.g., a request for dynamic waveform switching) can be linked to a repetition of a random access preamble (e.g., a PRACH repetition). For example, a request from UE 515 to transition from a first waveform type to a second waveform type (e.g., a CFRA PUSCH waveform switch) can be conditioned on a threshold, a received power of a synchronization signal (e.g., synchronization signal reference signal received power (SS-RSRP)), or one or more other measurements performed at UE 515, among other possible examples. In some examples, the threshold can be configured for UE 515 using RRC signaling. Additionally or alternatively, the threshold can be different for different applications of an uplink message (e.g., CFRA PUSCH), such as whether the random access procedure is for handover or beam failure recovery.

[0115] Additionally or alternatively, the request for transition of the uplink message type from the first waveform type to the second waveform type (e.g., a request for dynamic waveform switching) may be applicable based on the capabilities of the UE 515, which may be indicated to the network entity 505 as part of the UE capability indication. For example, the UE 515 may send an indication of the capabilities associated with the waveform type selection at the UE 515 (e.g., UE capabilities) to the network entity 505. In such an example, the UE 515 may receive the first signaling (e.g., including the selection rule indication) based on the UE capabilities. In some examples, the UE capabilities for waveform switching (e.g., for uplink message type, for CFRA PUSCH) may be indicated by frequency range, by frequency band, by frequency band combination, by bandwidth portion, by carrier component, or by use case scenario (e.g., of a random access procedure), or any combination thereof.

[0116] In some examples, based on the request to transition the uplink message type from the first waveform type to the second waveform type (e.g., a request for dynamic waveform switching), the UE 515 may use a different waveform type for the uplink message sent at 535 (e.g., Msg3 of CFRA), for another uplink message (or multiple other uplink messages) sent from the UE 515 as part of another (e.g., subsequent) random access procedure, or for any other uplink communication sent from the UE 515 (e.g., after sending the request). That is, the waveform type determined at the UE 515 at 530 may be used for the next uplink message (e.g., the uplink message sent at 535) or for any subsequent uplink message sent from the UE 515. In some examples, configuring the UE 515 with rules for selecting a waveform type during a random access procedure may increase the reliability of communications between the UE 515 and the network entity 505, among other possible benefits.
