AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

In the prior art, satellite-based RF sensing is incompatible with orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) waveforms in prospective sixth-generation (6G) wireless communication systems, resulting in RF sensing being usually performed by non-communication systems, lacking effective joint communication and sensing (JCS) solutions.

Method used

By modifying the cyclic prefix (CP) of symbols in OFDM waveforms used in current and forward-looking NTN communication systems, a new type of symbol called JCS symbols is designed to ensure that the duration of its CP is related to the coverage width and bandwidth of RF signals sent by the NTN platform.

Benefits of technology

Compatibility between RF sensing and communication is achieved, allowing the NTN system to perform RF sensing without affecting the communication quality, improving the system's sensing capability and flexibility.

Abstract

In some implementations, a non-terrestrial network (NTN) platform may transmit a radio frequency (RF) signal toward the earth, the RF signal including an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) waveform having a plurality of symbols, the plurality of symbols including a JCS symbol and one or more non-JCS symbols, where: the RF signal is incident on an area of the earth defining a coverage area, and the one or more non-JCS symbols are not incident on the area of the earth defining the coverage area; and the duration of the cyclic prefix (CP) of the JCS symbol is a function of the width of the coverage area. The NTN platform may receive one or more reflections of a JCS symbol at the NTN platform.
