Description

Technical Field

[0001] The invention claimed herein relates to a polymer obtainable by reacting a polyether with a hindered amine light stabilizer (HALS). The invention claimed herein relates to a process for preparing the polymer. The invention claimed herein also relates to a liquid composition comprising the polymer and the use of the polymer as a dispersant and light stabilizer. Background Art

[0002] Liquid pigment compositions containing pigments and fillers as well as a liquid vehicle are commonly used in various industrial and consumer technical applications, in particular for the coloring of coating compositions, including solvent- and water-borne paints, heavy-duty coatings, automotive coatings, in printing inks, or for the coloring of cosmetics, plastics, etc.

[0003] Therefore, there is a continuing need for polymers which are suitable as dispersants for pigments and which provide high stability, reduced viscosity, especially at high pigment loadings, and improved optical properties of the coatings, such as gloss, color intensity, reduced yellowing, rub-off characteristics or reduced cratering.

[0004] An important property of the dry coating is weathering stability, which is driven by the addition of light stabilizers.

[0005] The dispersant property is useful for uniformly dispersing particulate materials such as pigments and fillers in the liquid composition, and for the stability of the liquid composition; whereas the light stabilizer property provides weathering stability to the coating obtained from the liquid composition.

[0006] In the prior art, polymers or oligomers with light stabilizers are known and are described, for example, in the following references.

[0007] US 9394244 B2 discloses polyalophanate oligomers comprising ethylenically unsaturated groups and polymer stabilizer groups selected from hindered amine light stabilizers, ultraviolet light absorbers, antioxidants and dihydrocarbyl hydroxylamines.

[0008] The polymers or oligomers with light stabilizers disclosed in the prior art have limitations, such as having weak dispersant properties or weak light stabilizer properties or both.

[0009] It is therefore an object of the invention claimed herein to provide a polymer which can be used as a dispersant in a liquid composition and which has light stabilizer properties. It is an object to provide a polymer which has good dispersant properties in a liquid composition, such as improved viscosity and improved stability. Furthermore, it is desired that the polymer provide a good light stabilizer effect (good weathering stability) for the coating obtained from the liquid composition. Summary of the invention
