An apparatus configured to: receive a plurality of audio objects, each audio object comprising a respective audio signal and directional metadata; separating at least one audio object from the plurality of audio objects to give at least one separated audio object and a remaining plurality of audio objects; determining a priority value associated with each of the plurality of remaining audio objects; determining a priority value for the at least one separated audio object according to the audio signal type of the audio signal associated with the at least one separated audio object and the priority values of the remaining plurality of audio objects; determining a quantization bit allocation for directional metadata associated with the at least one separated audio object based on the priority value for the at least one separated audio object; and quantizing directional metadata associated with the at least one separated audio object based on the quantized bit allocation.
