The invention belongs to the technical field of flywheel energy storage, and discloses a flywheel energy storage system based on liquid nitrogen cooling and auxiliary braking and a working method.The system comprises a magnetic suspension energy storage flywheel system, a liquid nitrogen supply system and a braking resistor, and a first exhaust system is arranged on a shell of the magnetic suspension energy storage flywheel system; the brake resistor is arranged in a brake resistor box and connected with a generator of the magnetic suspension energy storage flywheel system, a second exhaust system is arranged on the brake resistor box, and the liquid nitrogen supply system is connected with the shell and the brake resistor box. According to the invention, the rotor body can be rapidly and efficiently cooled, braking can be effectively assisted, and the heating risk of the braking resistor is reduced.
