In one example, an electrosynthesis or power cell is provided that includes a first electrode, a second electrode, and a liquid flow channel positioned between the first electrode and the second electrode. The liquid flow channel supplies a liquid electrolyte, and the liquid flow channel is narrow. A porous spacer, which may be a porous capillary spacer, may be positioned in the liquid flow channel. In another example, a method of operating a battery is provided that includes filling a flow channel with a highly conductive liquid electrolyte and applying a potential difference between a first electrode and a second electrode. During operation of the battery, a poorly conductive liquid electrolyte flows through the flow channel.
