Description

Technical Field

[0001] This invention relates generally to a watering / irrigation assembly. More specifically, this invention relates to an adjustable sprayer. Background Technology

[0002] Conventional irrigation components capable of adjusting the angle range of the spray pattern (e.g., those disclosed in EP 2020749 B1, US 9,981,276 B2, and EP 2200749 B1) typically require complex and delicate manufacturing processes. Furthermore, some of these conventional components cannot adjust the angle range of the spray pattern between 0° (off) and 360° (full circle). Therefore, it is desirable to provide an adjustable sprayer that solves one or more of the aforementioned problems. Summary of the Invention

[0003] The embodiments of the disclosed subject matter provided in this summary are for illustrative purposes and are in no way intended to limit the claimed subject matter. Various sets of embodiments are disclosed in the summary. Those skilled in the art will understand that one or more aspects of a set of embodiments may be incorporated into and used with other embodiments disclosed in the summary and detailed description.

[0004] A first embodiment of the adjustable sprayer defines a fluid flow path extending from a fluid inlet opening through a fluid outlet region. The first embodiment of the adjustable sprayer may include a central member having an outer surface. The outer surface of the central member may define a fluid outlet region and a seal receiving region.

[0005] A first embodiment of the adjustable sprayer may include an outer member having an inner surface. The inner surface of the outer member may define a passage and a set of channels. The passage extends through the outer member. Each of the channels extends along a portion of a fluid flow path and includes an inlet opening and an outlet opening. For each channel, the inlet opening is configured to be closer to the fluid inlet opening along the fluid flow path than the outlet opening. The inlet opening is offset in a spiral pattern along the fluid flow path. The passage includes a fluid inlet opening.

[0006] A first embodiment of the adjustable sprayer may include an annular seal disposed within a sealing receiving area. The annular seal may include an outwardly projecting annular sealing region that engages with at least a portion of the inner surface of an outer member, forming a fluid-impermeable seal therewith. The central member and the outwardly projecting annular sealing region are movable relative to the outer member along a fluid flow path. Each channel having a corresponding inlet opening disposed along the fluid flow path between the outwardly projecting annular sealing region and a fluid inlet opening is in an open state and is in fluid communication with both the fluid inlet opening and the fluid outlet region. Each channel having a corresponding inlet opening disposed along the fluid flow path between the outwardly projecting annular sealing region and the fluid outlet region is in a closed state and is not in fluid communication with both the fluid inlet opening and the fluid outlet region. Therefore, movement of the outwardly projecting annular sealing region along the fluid flow path changes both the number and angular range of the channels in the open state.

[0007] In a first embodiment, the fluid outlet region may include an inclined annular region. The seal receiving region may include a first annular edge and a second annular edge, and an intervening annular space disposed along the fluid flow path between the first and second annular edges. The annular seal may be disposed within the intervening annular space. The central member may further include a set of outwardly oriented threads, and the outer member may further include a set of inwardly oriented threads, the inwardly oriented threads being shaped to engage with the set of outwardly oriented threads, such that the central member can be rotatably engaged with the outer member. Therefore, rotational movement of the central member relative to the outer member changes the positioning of the outwardly annular seal relative to the inlet opening along the fluid flow path.

[0008] A first embodiment of the adjustable sprayer may also include one or more recessed paths disposed within the set of outwardly oriented threads.

[0009] In a first embodiment of the adjustable sprayer, the central member is movable relative to the outer member between an open position, a partially open position, and a closed position. The central member is in the open position when all channels in the channel are open. The central member is in the partially open position when at least one channel in the channel is open and at least one channel in the channel is closed. The central member is in the closed position when all channels in the channel are closed.

[0010] When the central component is in a closed position and pressurized fluid is introduced into the fluid inlet opening, the fluid flow path is closed, so that no pressurized fluid leaves the fluid outlet area.

[0011] In a first embodiment of the adjustable sprayer, the channels can be positioned along the entire angular range of the inner surface of the outer member, wherein an intervening portion is provided between the channels.

[0012] When the central component is in the open position, the angular range of the open channel is 360°.

[0013] The first embodiment of the adjustable sprayer may also include a flow control mechanism for changing the volume of fluid flowing through the adjustable sprayer.

[0014] The flow control mechanism may include a third set of threads and a fourth set of threads, wherein the third set of threads is attached to a shaft that is movable relative to the fourth set of threads to provide at least two different levels of obstruction.

[0015] A second embodiment of the adjustable sprayer may define a fluid flow path extending from a fluid inlet opening through a fluid outlet region. The second embodiment of the adjustable sprayer may include a central member having an outer surface. The outer surface of the central member may define a fluid outlet region and a set of channels. Each of the channels may extend along a portion of the fluid flow path and may include an inlet opening and an outlet opening. For each channel, the inlet opening is configured to be closer to the fluid inlet opening along the fluid flow path than the outlet opening. The inlet opening is offset along the fluid flow path in a spiral pattern.

[0016] A second embodiment of the adjustable sprayer may further include an external member having an inner surface. The inner surface of the external member defines a passage and a sealing receiving area. The passage extends through the external member. The passage includes a fluid inlet opening.

[0017] A second embodiment of the adjustable sprayer may further include an annular seal disposed within a sealing receiving area. The annular seal includes an inward annular sealing region that engages with at least a portion of the outer surface of the central member and forms a fluid-impermeable seal therewith. The central member is movable to the inward annular sealing region of the outer member. Each channel having a corresponding inlet opening disposed along the fluid flow path between the inward annular sealing region and the fluid inlet opening is in an open state and is in fluid communication with both the fluid inlet opening and the fluid outlet region. Each channel having a corresponding inlet opening disposed along the fluid flow path between the inward annular sealing region and the fluid outlet region is in a closed state and is not in fluid communication with both the fluid inlet opening and the fluid outlet region. Therefore, movement of the inward annular sealing region along the fluid flow path changes both the number and angle range of the channels in the open state.

[0018] In a second embodiment of the adjustable sprayer, the fluid output region may include an inclined annular region. The seal receiving region may include a first annular edge and a second annular edge, and an intervening annular space disposed along the fluid flow path between the first and second annular edges. The annular seal may be disposed within the intervening annular space. The central member may include a set of outwardly oriented threads, and the outer member may include a set of inwardly oriented threads formed to engage with the set of outwardly oriented threads, such that the central member can be rotatably engaged with the outer member. Therefore, rotational movement of the central member relative to the outer member alters the positioning of the inwardly annular sealing region relative to the inlet opening along the fluid flow path.

[0019] A second embodiment of the adjustable sprayer may also include one or more recessed paths disposed within the set of outwardly oriented threads.

[0020] In a second embodiment of the adjustable sprayer, the central member is movable relative to the outer member between an open position, a partially open position, and a closed position. The central member is in the open position when all channels in the channel are open. The central member is in the partially open position when at least one channel in the channel is open and at least one channel in the channel is closed. The central member is in the closed position when all channels in the channel are closed.

[0021] In a second embodiment of the adjustable sprayer, when the central member is in a closed position and pressurized fluid is introduced into the fluid inlet opening, the fluid flow path is closed, so that no pressurized fluid leaves the fluid outlet area.

[0022] In a second embodiment of the adjustable sprayer, the channels can be positioned along the entire angular range of the inner surface of the outer member, wherein an intervening portion is provided between the channels.

[0023] In a second embodiment of the adjustable sprayer, when the central component is in the open position, the angle range of the channel in the open state is 360°.

[0024] A second embodiment of the adjustable sprayer may include a flow control mechanism for changing the volume of fluid flowing through the second embodiment of the adjustable sprayer.

[0025] In a second embodiment of the adjustable sprayer, the flow control mechanism may include a third set of threads and a fourth set of threads, wherein the third set of threads is attached to a shaft that is movable relative to the fourth set of threads to provide at least two different levels of obstruction. [0048] introduction

[0049] As explained above, Figures 1 to 12B Various views of one embodiment of the adjustable sprayer 100 are provided. This embodiment of the adjustable sprayer 100 includes a set of channels 132 located on the inner surface 122 of the outer member. Conversely, Figures 14 to 15B Various views of an alternative embodiment of the adjustable sprayer 200 are provided. This alternative embodiment of the adjustable sprayer 200 includes a set of channels 232 on the outer surface 212 of the central member.

[0050] Figures 1 to 5

[0051] Figures 1 to 5 The illustrated adjustable sprayer 100 includes a central member 110, an outer member 120, and a flow control mechanism 180. The adjustable sprayer 100 may include an axial dimension 102, a lateral dimension 104, a first end 106, and a second end 108. The first axial direction 103 and the second axial direction 105 are combined... Figure 1The orientation is in the indicated axial direction. For example, a first axial direction 103 may extend from the fluid inlet opening 140 of the adjustable sprayer 100 toward the fluid outlet region 114 of the adjustable sprayer 100, and a second axial direction 105 may extend from the fluid outlet region 114 toward the fluid inlet opening 140. A fluid flow path 143 extends from the fluid inlet opening 140 through the fluid outlet region 114 of the adjustable sprayer 100.

[0052] The central member 110 may include a central member outer surface 112 that defines a fluid output region 114, a seal receiving region 171, and a central member threaded region 118. The fluid output region 114 may include a sloping annular region 116. In various embodiments, the sloping annular region 116 widens along the fluid flow path 143 (e.g., along a first axial direction 103) (i.e., across the lateral dimension 104). The sloping annular region 116 deflects fluid (e.g., water or water containing additives such as fertilizer or pesticides) away from the adjustable sprayer 100 to create a spray pattern of fluid.

[0053] The seal receiving area 171 may include a first annular edge 192 and a second annular edge 194. An intervening annular space 196 for receiving the annular seal 150 is disposed between the first annular edge 192 and the second annular edge 194 along the fluid flow path 143.

[0054] The threaded region 118 of the central component may include a set of outwardly oriented threads 126. This set of outwardly oriented threads 126 may include one or more recessed paths 168. When assembled and supplied with pressurized fluid 176, the pressurized fluid 176 will pass through the recessed paths 168.

[0055] The adjustable sprayer 100 may also include a flow control mechanism 180 for changing the volume of fluid flowing through the adjustable sprayer 100. The flow control mechanism 180 includes a rotatable handle 191 and a fourth set of threads 184 attached to (e.g., integrally formed or fixed to) a shaft 186. The fourth set of threads 184 engages with a third set of threads 182 to allow rotation and movement, for example, along a lateral dimension 104 of the shaft 186, to change the volume of fluid flowing through the adjustable sprayer 100.

[0056] The outer member 120 may include an inner surface 122 defining a passage 130 through the outer member 120. When assembled, the central member 110 is at least partially positioned within the passage 130. The inner surface 122 also defines a set of channels 132 having an intervening portion 178. Each channel 132 includes an inlet opening 136 and an outlet opening 138. Within each channel 132, the associated inlet opening 136 is configured to be closer to the fluid inlet opening 140 along the fluid flow path 143 than the associated outlet opening 138. The inlet openings 136 are arranged in a spiral pattern 142 offset along the fluid flow path 143.

[0057] The inner surface 122 of the outer member may also define an outer member threaded region 124. The outer member threaded region 124 may include a set of inwardly oriented threads 111. This set of inwardly oriented threads 111 of the outer member 120 engages with this set of outwardly oriented threads 126 of the central member 110, such that rotational movement of the central member 110 relative to the outer member 120 causes movement of the central member 110 relative to the outer member 120 along a fluid flow path 143. Therefore, the set of inwardly oriented threads 111 is shaped to engage with the set of outwardly oriented threads 126, such that in some embodiments, the central member 110 may be able to rotatably engage with the outer member 120. Furthermore, the annular seal 150 includes an outwardly annular sealing region 152 that engages with at least a portion of the inner surface 122 of the outer member and forms therewith a fluid-impermeable seal 154. One or more recessed paths 168 allow fluid to pass through the central member threaded region 118.

[0058] Therefore, the rotational movement of the central member 110 relative to the outer member 120 changes the positioning of the outward annular sealing region 152 relative to the inlet opening 136 of the channel 132 along the fluid flow path 143. Each channel 132 having a corresponding inlet opening 136 disposed along the fluid flow path 143 between the outward annular sealing region 152 and the fluid inlet opening 140 is in an open state 166 and is in fluid communication with both the fluid inlet opening 140 and the fluid outlet region 114. Each channel 132 having a corresponding inlet opening 136 disposed along the fluid flow path 143 between the outward annular sealing region 152 and the fluid outlet region 114 is in a closed state 164 and is not in fluid communication with both the fluid inlet opening 140 and the fluid outlet region 114. Therefore, the movement of the outward annular sealing region 152 along the fluid flow path 143 changes both the number and angular range of the channels 132 in the open state 166. Therefore, the central member 110 and the outward annular sealing region 152 are able to move relative to the inlet opening 136 of the outer member 120 along at least a portion of the fluid flow path 143.

[0059] For reference only. Figure 5 The figure is a simplified diagram illustrating the outward annular sealing region 152 of the channel 132 and the annular seal 150 at a location along the fluid flow path 143, such that only two channels in the channel 132 are in the open state 166. Therefore, the angular range of the spray pattern of the pressurized fluid 176 is very narrow. Figure 5 The spiral pattern 142 of the entrance opening 136 of the channel 132 is illustrated.

[0060] As illustrated, channels 132 with intervening portions 178 can be positioned at regular intervals around the inner surface 122 of the outer member. As illustrated, the adjustable sprayer 100 may include twenty channels 132. In alternative embodiments, the number and angle range of the channels may be varied. For example, in an alternative embodiment, the adjustable sprayer 100 may include fifteen channels positioned within an angle range of 270°, or the adjustable sprayer may include thirty channels with an angle range of 360°.

[0061] Figures 6 to 11B

[0062] Figures 6 to 11B An example is shown of the central member 110, wherein, when pressurized fluid 176 is provided, due to the rotational movement of the central member 110 relative to the outer member 120, the annular seal 150 and the associated outward annular sealing region 152 are positioned at different locations along the fluid flow path 143. More specifically, Figures 6 to 7B An example is shown of the central member 110, which is in an open position 170 relative to the outer member 120, i.e., all channels in the channel 132 are in an open state 166. Figures 8 to 9B An example is shown of a central member 110 in a closed position 174 relative to the outer member 120, i.e., all channels in the channel 132 are in a closed state 164. Figures 10 to 11B An example is a central member 110 in a partially open position 172 relative to an external member 120, wherein at least one channel 132 is in a closed state 164 and at least one channel 132 is in an open state 166.

[0063] Now for reference Figures 6 to 7B All inlet openings in inlet opening 136 are positioned between fluid inlet opening 140 and outward annular sealing region 152 of annular seal 150, such that all channels in channel 132 are in fluid communication with both fluid inlet opening 140 and fluid outlet region 114. The spray angle range 161 emitted by adjustable sprayer 100 is 360°.

[0064] Now for reference Figures 8 to 9BAll inlet openings in inlet opening 136 are positioned along fluid flow path 143 between fluid output region 114 and outward annular sealing region 152 of annular seal 150, such that none of the channels in channel 132 are in fluid communication with either fluid inlet opening 140 or fluid output region 114. The spray angle range 162 emitted by adjustable sprayer 100 is 0°. In other words, adjustable sprayer 100 is "closed" so that no water leaks from sprayer 100.

[0065] Now for reference Figures 10 to 11B Five of the inlet openings 136 are positioned along the fluid flow path 143 between the fluid inlet opening 140 and the outward annular sealing area 152 of the annular seal 150, such that the five channels 132 are in fluid communication with both the fluid inlet opening 140 and the fluid outlet area 114. The remaining fifteen inlet openings 136 are positioned along the fluid flow path 143 between the fluid outlet area 114 and the outward annular sealing area 152 of the annular seal 150, such that the fifteen channels 132 are in a closed state 164 and are not in fluid communication with both the fluid inlet opening 140 and the fluid outlet area 114. The spray angle range 163 emitted by the adjustable sprayer 100 is approximately 90°. The range of the partial opening positioning 172 of the central member 110 relative to the outer member 120 extends from only one channel 132 in the open state 166 to all but one of the channels 132 in the open state 166 (i.e., at least one channel 132 in the open state 166 and at least one channel 132 in the closed state 164). As previously noted, in a particular embodiment of the adjustable sprayer, the number of channels 132 may vary within the scope of the disclosed subject matter.

[0067] As previously noted, the adjustable sprayer 100 may include a flow control mechanism 180 for changing the volume of fluid flowing through the adjustable sprayer 100. The flow control mechanism 180 may include: a fourth set of threads 184, which may include a portion of the external member 120; and a third set of threads 182 attached to a shaft 186 (e.g., integrally formed with or fixed to the shaft) and a rotatable shank 191. The third set of threads 182 and the fourth set of threads 184 engage with each other such that rotation of the fourth set of threads 184 relative to the third set of threads 182 causes lateral movement of the fourth set of threads 184 relative to the third set of threads 182. Therefore, rotation of the rotatable shank 191 changes the level of obstruction provided by the shaft 186 to the passage 130. Figures 12A to 12B A first blocking level 188 is illustrated, in which axis 186 almost completely blocks passage 130. Figures 13A to 13B A second blocking level 190 is illustrated, in which shaft 186 provides almost no obstruction to passage 130. Of course, the first blocking level 188 and the second blocking level 190 are merely illustrative. By rotating the rotatable handle 191 to... Figures 12A to 13B Other blocking levels can be achieved beyond the illustrated positioning.

[0068] Figures 14 to 15B

[0069] Figures 14 to 15B An alternative embodiment of the adjustable sprayer 200 is illustrated. The adjustable sprayer 200 differs from the adjustable sprayer 100 in that the set of channels 232 is positioned on the central member 210 rather than on the outer member 220. Furthermore, the intermediate annular space 296 for receiving the annular seal 250 is defined by the outer member 220. By rotating the central member 210 relative to the outer member 220, the annular seal 250 can be positioned or moved to different locations along the fluid flow path 243, such that the central member 210 can be in a closed position, an open position, or a partially open position 272 relative to the outer member 220. In the open position, the inlet opening 236 of each channel in the channels 232 is disposed between the inward annular sealing region 252 of the annular seal 250 and the fluid inlet opening 240, such that all channels in the channels 232 are in an open state 266, wherein all channels in the channels 232 are in fluid communication with both the fluid inlet opening 240 and the fluid outlet region 214. In closed positioning, the inlet opening 236 of each channel in channel 232 is positioned between the inward annular sealing region 252 and the fluid output region 214, such that all channels in channel 232 are in a closed state 264 and are not in fluid communication with either the fluid inlet opening 240 or the fluid output region 214. In partially open positioning 272 (e.g.) Figures 14 to 15B In the example, at least one channel 232 is in the open state 266, and at least one channel 232 is in the closed state 264.

[0070] Figures 14 to 15B The illustrated adjustable sprayer 200 includes a central member 210 and an outer member 220. The adjustable sprayer 200 may include an axial dimension 202, a lateral dimension 204, a first end 206, and a second end 208. The first axial direction 203 and the second axial direction 205 are... Figure 15AThe orientation is indicated in the axial direction. For example, a first axial direction 203 may extend from the fluid inlet opening 240 of the adjustable sprayer 200 toward the fluid outlet region 214 of the adjustable sprayer 200, and a second axial direction 205 may extend from the fluid outlet region 214 toward the fluid inlet opening 240. A fluid flow path 243 extends from the fluid inlet opening 240 through the fluid outlet region 214.

[0071] The central member 210 may also include a central member outer surface 212 that defines a fluid output region 214, a set of channels 232, and a central member threaded region 218. The fluid output region 214 may include a sloping annular region 216. In various embodiments, the sloping annular region 216 widens along the fluid flow path 243 (e.g., along a first axial direction 203) (i.e., across the lateral dimension 204). The sloping annular region 216 deflects fluid (e.g., water or water containing additives such as fertilizer or pesticides) away from the adjustable sprayer 200.

[0072] The outer surface 212 of the central member also defines a set of channels 232 having an intervening portion 278. Each channel 232 includes an inlet opening 236 and an outlet opening 238. The inlet opening 236 is arranged in a spiral pattern 242 offset along the fluid flow path 243.

[0073] The threaded region 218 of the central member may include a set of outwardly oriented threads 226. This set of outwardly oriented threads 226 may include one or more recessed paths 268. When assembled and supplied with pressurized fluid 276, the fluid 276 will pass through the recessed paths 268. The one or more recessed paths 268 allow fluid to pass through the threaded region 218 of the central member.

[0074] Although not illustrated, the adjustable sprayer 200 may also incorporate a flow control mechanism 180 (illustrated in conjunction with a first embodiment of the adjustable sprayer 100) for changing the volume of fluid flowing through the adjustable sprayer 200.

[0075] The outer member 220 may include an inner surface 222 that defines a passage 230 through the outer member 220. When assembled, the central member 210 is at least partially positioned within the passage 230.

[0076] The external component 220 may include a seal receiving region 271. The seal receiving region 271 includes a first annular edge 292 and a second annular edge 294. An intervening annular space 296 for receiving the annular seal 250 is disposed between the first annular edge 292 and the second annular edge 294 along the fluid flow path 243.

[0077] The inner surface 222 of the outer member may further define a threaded region 224 of the outer member. The threaded region 224 of the outer member may include a set of inwardly oriented threads 211. This set of inwardly oriented threads 211 of the outer member 220 engages with this set of outwardly oriented threads 226 of the central member 210, such that rotational movement of the central member 210 relative to the outer member 220 causes movement of the central member 210 relative to the outer member 220 along the fluid flow path 243. Therefore, the set of inwardly oriented threads 211 is shaped to engage with the set of outwardly oriented threads 226, allowing the central member 210 to be rotatably engaged with the outer member 220. Furthermore, the annular seal 250 includes an inwardly annular sealing region 252 that engages with at least a portion of the outer surface 212 of the central member and forms a fluid-impermeable seal 254 therewith.

[0078] Therefore, the rotational movement of the central member 210 relative to the outer member 220 alters the positioning of the inward annular sealing region 252 relative to the inlet opening 236 of the channel 232 along the fluid flow path 243. Thus, the central member 210 and the inlet opening 236 are movable relative to the inward annular sealing region 252 of the outer member 220 along the fluid flow path 243.

[0079] Each channel 232, having a corresponding inlet opening 236 disposed along the fluid flow path 243 between the inward annular sealing region 252 and the fluid inlet opening 240, is in an open state 266 and is in fluid communication with both the fluid inlet opening 240 and the fluid outlet region 214. Each channel 232, having a corresponding inlet opening 236 disposed along the fluid flow path 243 between the inward annular sealing region 252 and the fluid outlet region 214, is in a closed state 264 and is not in fluid communication with both the fluid inlet opening 240 and the fluid outlet region 214. Therefore, axial movement of the inward annular sealing region 252 changes both the number and angular range of the channels 232 in the open state 266.

[0080] Channels 232, having an intervening portion 278, are positioned at regular intervals around the outer surface 212 of the central member. As illustrated, the adjustable sprayer 200 may include 18 channels 232. In alternative embodiments, the number and angle range of the channels may be varied. For example, in an alternative embodiment, the adjustable sprayer may include 15 channels positioned within an angle range of 270°, or the adjustable sprayer may include 30 channels with an angle range of 360°.

[0081] in conclusion

[0082] It should be noted that in some embodiments, channels 132, 232 may extend along fluid flow paths 143, 243, and may therefore include axial channels 132, 232.

[0083] Fluid flow paths 143 and 243 can be in the following states: open when all channels 132 and 232 are open; partially open when at least one channel 132 and 232 is open (166 and 266) and at least one channel 132 and 232 is closed (164 and 264); or closed when all channels 132 and 232 are closed (164 and 264). If such a level of blockage is available in the specific embodiments discussed, fluid flow paths 143 and 243 can also be completely blocked by using flow control mechanism 180.

[0084] In addition, in various alternative embodiments, in addition to the mating set of threads 111, 211, 126, 226, different mechanisms can be used to move and reposition the central members 110, 210 relative to the external members 120, 220.

[0085] It should also be noted that channels 132, 232 and intermediate portions 178, 278 may each be elongated in shape.

[0086] In various implementation schemes, the adjustable sprayers 100, 200 may be used, for example, in conjunction with a drip irrigation system.

[0087] While specific embodiments and applications of the invention have been illustrated and described, it should be understood that the invention is not limited to the precise configurations and components disclosed herein. Various modifications, alterations, and variations that will be apparent to those skilled in the art can be made to the arrangement, operation, and details of the components, methods, and systems of the invention disclosed herein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
