Abstract

A cured fabric useful in a battery can be prepared by impregnating a PET fabric with a binder emulsion containing a self-crosslinking acrylic polymer binder and an anionic surfactant, the anionic surfactant contains (1) a lipophilic moiety and (2) an anionic hydrophilic moiety bound to the lipophilic moiety by an oxygen-containing organic moiety. The combination of the binder and the anionic surfactant provides rapid wetting of the fabric. The impregnated fabric is cured by heating to crosslink the acrylic polymer. The resulting cured fabric has high tensile strength and good wettability with acid solutions used in batteries.
