Abstract

The present invention relates to a method and system for recovering low carbon ferro-chrome from a feed material comprising chromite ore and aluminum particles using an inert gas (e.g., argon) to perform a thermit melting process within a hearth of an electric arc furnace. The thermit melting process produces a molten low carbon ferro-chrome metal bath, where in the chamber, molten slag floats on the molten low carbon ferro-chrome metal bath. The molten low carbon ferro-chrome metal and molten slag are separately extracted and processed to provide a cured low carbon ferro-chrome metal product and a cured slag particulate product, respectively. A method for recycling, recovery and reuse of the inert gas, and a system for effecting recycling, recovery and reuse of the inert gas.
