Research indicates that sleep-related deaths can occur when infants with inherent vulnerability to sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) are placed in unsafe sleep environments. Co-sleeping can result in the placement of a cradle or other infant bedding on top of the adult bed itself, which can pose a risk of entrapment or suffocation for the child.
[0005] Therefore, there is a need for a universal and safe child sleep device, such as a cradle, which can be positioned next to, mounted to, or otherwise securely supported on or adjacent to the parents' bed to assist infants and toddlers in having a safe sleep environment. Additionally, there is a need for an alternative to placing an infant or cradle directly on the bed to sleep. A device is also needed to prevent improper use of the cradle directly on the bed or other unstable surfaces. Summary of the Invention
[0006] A cradle typically includes any type of enclosure that allows the baby to sleep or rest near the caregiver. A cradle basically consists of some kind of support structure and an enclosure that usually includes some kind of soft, supportive surface for the baby.
[0007] It is advantageous that the cradle can be removed or disassembled from the cradle frame or other supporting structure. However, once the cradle is removed, the user may decide to use it improperly in a way that could harm the baby (e.g., placing the cradle on an unstable surface such as a sofa cushion).
[0008] The aforementioned needs are met by a cradle system comprising a cradle and a mounting assembly, which provides a primary mode of use when used in a conventional / appropriate manner (e.g., the cradle attached to the mounting assembly) and one or more secondary modes when the cradle is not attached to the mounting assembly and is otherwise not properly supported (e.g., when removed from the mounting structure and placed on a surface).
