Abstract
Description
Technical Field
[0001] This disclosure relates to battery cells and battery packs including such battery cells, as well as vehicles. Background Technology
[0002] Unlike primary batteries, which are non-rechargeable, secondary batteries are rechargeable batteries that can undergo charge and discharge cycles. Secondary batteries are widely used not only in portable electronic devices but also in electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) powered by electric sources.
[0003] Because secondary batteries not only have the major advantage of significantly reducing the use of fossil fuels, but also the advantage of not producing byproducts in energy use, these secondary batteries are attracting attention as a new energy source for promoting environmental friendliness and energy efficiency.
[0004] The types of rechargeable batteries widely used today include lithium-ion batteries, lithium polymer batteries, nickel-cadmium batteries, nickel-metal hydride batteries, and nickel-zinc batteries. A single rechargeable battery cell (i.e., a single battery cell) operates at a voltage of approximately 2.5V to 4.5V. Therefore, when a higher output voltage is required, multiple battery cells can be connected in series to form a battery pack. Alternatively, multiple battery cells can be connected in parallel according to charge / discharge capacity requirements to form a battery pack. Thus, the number of battery cells included in a battery pack and the type of their electrical connections can be varied depending on the required output voltage or total charge / discharge capacity.
[0005] Meanwhile, cylindrical, prismatic, and pouch-type battery cells are known as types of unit secondary battery cells. In the case of a cylindrical battery cell, an insulating separator is disposed between the positive and negative electrodes, and the electrodes and separator are wound to form a wound-core electrode assembly, which is then housed within a cylindrical battery casing to constitute the battery cell. Furthermore, a current collector can be connected to the uncoated portions of the positive and negative electrodes, and the current collector electrically connects the electrode assembly to the electrode terminals exposed on the outside of the cell. Additionally, an electrolyte capable of lithium-ion movement is injected into the interior of the battery casing. Furthermore, a battery cover is attached to one side of the battery casing to prevent electrolyte leakage and separation of the electrode assembly. In this case, a sealing gasket is inserted between the battery casing and the battery cover to maintain electrical insulation between them, preventing not only electrolyte leakage but also moisture intrusion.
[0006] However, when electrolyte accumulates on the inner bottom of a cylindrical battery casing for an extended period, it can corrode the casing. When the casing corrodes, nickel may deposit, damaging the separator of the electrode assembly. If the separator is damaged, a micro-short circuit may occur, leading to a drop in the battery cell voltage. Summary of the Invention

[0039] Throughout this instruction manual, unless the context otherwise indicates, each part may be singular or plural.
[0040] Figures 1 to 3 This is a diagram illustrating a battery cell (101) according to one embodiment of the present disclosure. Figure 1 This is a 3D view of the battery cell (101). Figure 2 It is a three-dimensional view of the longitudinal cross-section of the battery cell (101), and Figure 3 This is a longitudinal cross-sectional view of the battery cell (101).
[0041] Reference Figures 1 to 3 According to one aspect of the present disclosure, the battery cell (101) includes a battery housing (400), an electrode assembly (110), and an insulator (501).
[0042] In addition, the battery cell (101) may also include at least one of a cover plate (450), a sealing gasket (240), a current collector (220, 320), an electrode terminal (330), and a terminal gasket (340).
[0043] The electrode assembly (110) includes a first electrode having a first polarity, a second electrode having an opposite polarity, and a diaphragm disposed between the first electrode and the second electrode. For example, the first electrode may be a negative electrode or a positive electrode, and the second electrode may correspond to an electrode having a polarity opposite to that of the first electrode.
[0044] The electrode assembly (110) may have a structure in which a first electrode, a second electrode, and a diaphragm inserted therebetween are wound in a single direction. The electrode assembly (110) may have, for example, a core structure. That is, the electrode assembly (110) may be manufactured by winding a laminate in one direction around a winding center, the laminate being formed by stacking sheet-like first electrode current collectors and sheet-like second electrode current collectors at least once with the diaphragm inserted therebetween. However, aspects of this disclosure are not limited to the foregoing description, and any core structure known to those skilled in the art may be applied without limitation.
[0045] The first electrode includes a first electrode current collector and a first electrode active material coated on one or both surfaces of the first electrode current collector. At one end of the first electrode current collector in the width direction, a first uncoated portion (111) uncoated with the first electrode active material is provided. The first uncoated portion (111) can serve as a first electrode tab. The first uncoated portion (111) is provided at the upper part of the electrode assembly (110) housed in the battery casing (400) in the height direction. That is, the first electrode current collector includes a first uncoated portion (111) with no active material layer coated on its long side end and exposed to the outside of the separator, and a portion of the first uncoated portion (111) itself serves as an electrode tab. For example, in this specification, the first electrode can be a negative electrode, and the first uncoated portion (111) can serve as a negative electrode tab.
[0046] The second electrode includes a second electrode current collector and a second electrode active material coated on one or both surfaces of the second electrode current collector. At the other end of the second electrode current collector in the width direction, a second uncoated portion (112) uncoated with the second electrode active material is provided. The second uncoated portion (112) can serve as a second electrode tab. The second uncoated portion (112) is provided at the lower part in the height direction of the electrode assembly (110) housed in the battery casing (400). That is, the second electrode current collector includes a second uncoated portion (112) with no active material layer coated on its long side end and exposed to the outside of the separator, and at least a portion of the second uncoated portion (112) itself serves as an electrode tab. For example, in this specification, the second electrode can be a positive electrode, and the second uncoated portion (112) can serve as a positive electrode tab.
[0047] Meanwhile, as an example, the first uncoated portion (111) may be provided at the upper part of the electrode assembly (110) housed in the battery housing (400) in the height direction, and the second uncoated portion (112) may be provided at the lower part of the electrode assembly (110) housed in the battery housing (400) in the height direction. Therefore, the first uncoated portion (111) may alternatively be provided at the lower part of the electrode assembly (110) in the height direction, and the second uncoated portion (112) may be provided at the upper part of the electrode assembly (110) housed in the battery housing (400) in the height direction.
[0048] In this way, the first uncoated portion (111) and the second uncoated portion (112) can extend in opposite directions along the height direction of the cylindrical battery cell (101). In this disclosure, the positive electrode active material coated on the positive electrode plate and the negative electrode active material coated on the negative electrode plate can be used without limitation, as long as they are active materials known to those skilled in the art.
[0049] An opening may be formed at the top of the battery casing (400). That is, the opening may be located at the top of the battery cell (101). The battery casing (400) accommodates the electrode assembly (110) through the opening formed at the top, and also accommodates the electrolyte.
[0050] Meanwhile, the electrode terminal (330), which will be described later, can be disposed on the lower surface opposite the opening of the battery casing (400). For example, in this specification, the electrode terminal (330) can be electrically connected to a second uncoated portion (112) that can be used as a positive electrode. That is, the electrode terminal (330) can be a positive terminal.
[0051] Specifically, the battery housing (400) includes a circular bottom (411), a side portion (412) extending from the bottom (411), and a press-fit portion (430) formed by bending the end of the side portion (412) inward. That is, the battery housing (400) may include a hollow cylindrical shape.
[0052] Additionally, the battery casing (400) may also include a rolled edge (420) formed by pressing inward the side (412) adjacent to the crimping portion (430).
[0053] The crimping portion (430) can be bent and extended toward the inside of the battery housing (400) to wrap around and secure the edge of the cover plate (450) together with the sealing gasket (240) described later.
[0054] Specifically, a crimping portion (430) may be formed in the upper region of the battery housing (400). The crimping portion (430) may be bent inward and extend inward from the upper periphery of the battery housing (400) along the radial direction of the cylindrical battery cell (101). The crimping portion (430) is provided in a region corresponding to the edge periphery of the cover plate (450), which will be described later, and fixes the cover plate (450), thereby preventing the cover plate (450) from detaching upward.
[0055] Additionally, when the battery casing (400) is provided with a rolled edge (420), a pressing portion (430) can be formed above the rolled edge (420). The pressing portion (430) extends from the rolled edge (420) and has a bent and extended shape to surround the outer surface of the cover plate (450) placed on the rolled edge (420) and a portion of the upper surface of the cover plate (450). The upper end of the pressing portion (430) can extend inward a predetermined distance along the radial direction of the cylindrical battery cell (101) and wrap around a portion of the upper surface of the cover plate (450). In this way, the pressing portion (430) fixes the periphery of the edge of the upper surface of the cover plate (450). That is, the area around the edge of the cover plate (450) is inserted between the upper end of the pressing portion (430) and the rolled edge (420) and fixed to the battery casing (400) to cover the opening of the battery casing (400).
[0056] Alternatively, the crimping portion (430) can be formed to wrap around a portion of the first current collector (220), which will be described later, together with the edge of the cover plate (450). In this case, the end of the crimping portion (430) of the battery housing (400) can be bent so as to be pressed into the sealing gasket (240) surrounding the edge of the cover plate (450).
[0057] A rolled edge (420) can be formed by pressing the outer periphery of the battery housing (400) inward. That is, the rolled edge (420) has a shape that is recessed to a predetermined depth in the radial direction from the outer surface of the battery housing (400) and extends in the circumferential direction of the battery housing (400). The rolled edge (420) prevents the electrode assembly (110) having a size corresponding to the width of the battery housing (400) from disengaging through the upper opening of the battery housing (400) and can be used as a support for mounting a cover plate (450) thereon.
[0058] Alternatively, the battery casing (400) can be made of a material containing nickel. For example, the battery casing (400) can be made of nickel-plated steel sheet.
[0059] The cover (450) has an edge pressed against the crimp portion (430) of the battery housing (400) to cover the open end of the battery housing (400).
[0060] In other words, the cover plate (450) forms one side of the battery cell (101), that is, the side opposite to the bottom (411) of the battery casing (400). Therefore, one bottom surface of the battery casing (400) becomes the bottom (411), and the other bottom surface of the battery casing (400) is covered by the cover plate (450).
[0061] For example, the cover plate (450) is non-polar and can be made of a metallic material to ensure rigidity. That is, even if the cover plate (450) is made of a conductive metallic material, it may not be polar. In other words, the cover plate (450) may be electrically insulated from the battery casing (400) used as the negative terminal and from the electrode terminal (330) used as the positive terminal. Therefore, the cover plate (450) does not need to be electrically connected to the electrode assembly (110) or the battery casing (400), and its material does not necessarily need to be a conductive metal.
[0062] Meanwhile, in one aspect of this disclosure, the vertical orientation of the battery cell (101) can be changed as needed depending on the configuration in which the battery cell (101) is housed in the battery pack (10), which will be described later. That is, as... Figures 1 to 3 As shown, the electrode terminals (330) are arranged facing downwards and the cover plate (450) is arranged facing upwards. However, the arrangement of the battery cell (101) is not limited to this, and the electrode terminals (330) may alternatively face upwards with the cover plate (450) facing downwards. Therefore, the first uncoated portion (111) may be positioned at the lower part of the electrode assembly (110) housed in the battery housing (400) in the height direction, or alternatively, the second uncoated portion (112) may be positioned at the lower part of the electrode assembly (110) housed in the battery housing (400) in the height direction.
[0063] A sealing gasket (240) is pressed together with the edge of the cover plate (450) via the crimping portion (430) of the battery housing (400), thereby sealing the battery housing (400). In this case, the sealing gasket (240) can be bent together with the curved shape of the crimping portion (430) of the battery housing (400). When the battery housing (400) includes a rolled edge (420), the sealing gasket (240) can be disposed between the upper surface of the rolled edge (420) and the upper end of the crimping portion (430).
[0064] Therefore, the sealing gasket (240) is inserted between the cover plate (450) and the crimped portion (430) of the battery housing (400) to seal the top of the opening of the battery housing (400) and to electrically insulate the battery housing (400) from the cover plate (450). Thus, the sealing gasket (240) can be formed of a material having insulating and elastic properties, and can include a polymer resin.
[0065] For example, the sealing gasket (240) may include one or more heat-resistant resins selected from the group consisting of polypropylene (PP), polyethylene (PE), polyimide (PI), polycarbonate (PC), polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) and polystyrene (PS).
[0066] Additionally, the battery housing (400) can be electrically connected to the first uncoated portion (111) of the electrode assembly (110). In this case, the battery housing (400) can have the same polarity as the first uncoated portion (111). For example, the battery housing (400) can be used as the negative terminal. On the other hand, the battery housing (400) must be insulated from the second uncoated portion (112) of the electrode assembly (200).
[0067] The electrode terminal (330) may have a riveting structure. Specifically, the electrode terminal (330) may be riveted through a through hole formed in the bottom (411) of the battery housing (400). In addition, a terminal washer (340) may be provided between the electrode terminal (330) and the outer diameter of the through hole.
[0068] The electrode terminal (330) can be electrically connected to the second uncoated portion (112) of the electrode assembly (110). In this case, the electrode terminal (330) can have the same polarity as the second uncoated portion (112). For example, the electrode terminal (330) can be used as a positive terminal.
[0069] The current collectors (220, 320) may include a first current collector (220) electrically connecting a first uncoated portion (111) of the electrode assembly (110) to the battery housing (400), and a second current collector (320) electrically connecting a second uncoated portion (112) of the electrode assembly (110) to the electrode terminal (330).
[0070] Specifically, one end of the first current collector (220) can be inserted between the sealing gasket (240) and the rolled edge (420) to contact the rolled edge (420), while the other end can contact the first uncoated portion (111) of the electrode assembly (110). In this case, when the end of the crimp portion (430) of the battery housing (400) is bent to be pressed into the sealing gasket (240), one end of the first current collector (220) can be pressed and fixed together with the edge of the cover plate (450).
[0071] An insulator (501) is inserted between the electrode assembly (110) and a bottom surface of the battery housing (400). For example, one side of the bottom of the battery housing (400) may be the bottom (411). Furthermore, the insulator (501) may be formed such that the area in contact with the inner bottom surface of the battery housing (400) is smaller than the area in contact with the electrode assembly (110).
[0072] Specifically, the insulator (501) electrically insulates the second electrode of the electrode assembly (110) from the battery housing (400). More specifically, the insulator (501) may be inserted between the second current collector (320) connected to the second electrode of the electrode assembly (110) and the bottom (411) of the battery housing (400) to prevent the second current collector (320) from being electrically connected to the bottom (411) of the battery housing (400).
[0073] The insulator (501) may be formed of various materials known to those skilled in the art to which this disclosure pertains. For example, the insulator (501) may include silicon.
[0074] Figure 4 This is an enlarged rear perspective view illustrating the insulator (501) used in a battery cell (101) according to one aspect of this disclosure.
[0075] Reference Figure 4 The insulator (501) may include a flat plate portion (510) and a protrusion portion (550), the flat plate portion (510) contacting the electrode assembly (110), and the protrusion portion (550) extending from the bottom surface of the flat plate portion (510) toward the battery housing (400) and contacting the bottom surface of the battery housing (400) on one side.
[0076] Additionally, as described above, the battery casing (400) may include a hollow cylindrical shape. The flat plate portion (510) of the insulator (501) may include a circular shape corresponding to the bottom (411) of the battery casing (400). Furthermore, the flat plate portion (510) of the insulator (501) may have a through hole (511) formed in the center. As described above, the electrode terminal (330) may be mounted on one side of the bottom surface of the battery casing (400) and electrically connected to the electrode assembly (110). In this case, the electrode terminal (330) can be electrically connected to the electrode assembly (110) by passing through the through hole (511) formed in the insulator (501).
[0077] Additionally, the protrusion (550) of the insulator (501) may be formed in an annular shape. For example, the protrusion (550) of the insulator (501) may include a first annular protrusion (551) formed along the edge of the plate portion (510) and a second annular protrusion (552) formed along the edge of the through hole (511) formed at the center of the plate portion (510).
[0078] In addition, the annular shape of the protrusion (550) and the circular shape of the flat plate (510) can be concentric.
[0079] With this structure, the insulator (501) can ensure structural rigidity while minimizing the contact area with the bottom surface of one side of the battery housing (400).
[0080] Even if the vertical orientation of the battery cell (101) changes, the electrolyte tends to accumulate at the contact surface between the insulator (501) and the battery casing (400). If the electrolyte remains accumulated at the contact surface for an extended period, it may corrode the battery casing (400). When the battery casing (400) corrodes, nickel may be deposited from the battery casing (400), thereby damaging the separator of the electrode assembly (110). If the separator is damaged, a micro-short circuit may occur, resulting in a voltage drop in the battery cell (101).
[0081] However, according to one aspect of this disclosure, since the contact area between the insulator (501) and the bottom surface of one side of the battery housing (400) is minimized, the accumulation of electrolyte at the contact surface between the insulator (501) and the battery housing (400) can be reduced, thereby suppressing corrosion of the battery housing (400).
[0082] Meanwhile, this disclosure is not limited to the structure of the battery cell (101) described above. If the insulator (501) that insulates the positive or negative electrode of the electrode assembly (110) and the current collector (220, 320) connected thereto from the battery casing (400) has a structure that is inserted between the bottom surface of the electrode assembly (110) or the current collector (220, 320) and the battery casing (400), then the insulator (501) can also be applied to battery cells (101) with a different structure than the structure described above.
[0083] With this configuration, according to one aspect of the present disclosure, the fluidity of the electrolyte can be improved, thereby suppressing corrosion of the battery casing (400).
[0084] In the following text, refer to Figure 5 The insulator (502) used in another aspect of this disclosure will be described.
[0085] In another aspect of this disclosure, at least one of the first annular protrusion (553) and the second annular protrusion (554) of the insulator (502) may be formed as a discontinuous shape in which at least one region is broken.
[0086] Therefore, since the electrolyte can move through the discontinuous space of one or more of the first annular protrusion (553) and the second annular protrusion (554), the contact area between the protrusion (550) and the bottom surface of one side of the battery casing (400) can be further reduced, and the fluidity of the electrolyte can be further improved.
[0087] With this configuration, according to another aspect of this disclosure, the fluidity of the electrolyte can be further improved, thereby suppressing corrosion of the battery casing (400). In this way, as the fluidity of the electrolyte inside the battery cell increases, the total resistance can be reduced.
[0088] In the following text, refer to Figure 6 The insulator (503) used in another aspect of this disclosure will be described.
[0089] In another aspect of this disclosure, the insulator (503) may have protrusions (555) including a plurality of pillars.
[0090] Therefore, the area of contact between the protrusion (550) and the bottom surface of one side of the battery casing can be reduced, and the strength of the insulator can be ensured while improving the fluidity of the electrolyte.
[0091] With this configuration, according to another aspect of this disclosure, the fluidity of the electrolyte can be further improved, thereby suppressing corrosion of the battery casing (400). In this way, as the fluidity of the electrolyte inside the battery cell increases, the total resistance can be reduced.
[0092] Figure 7 Examples include Figure 1 A diagram of the battery pack (10) with battery cell (101).
[0093] Reference Figure 7 The battery pack (10) according to this disclosure may include at least one battery cell (101) according to the above disclosure. Additionally, the battery pack (10) according to this disclosure may include a battery pack housing (20) configured to house at least one battery cell (101). Furthermore, in addition to the battery cell (101), the battery pack (10) may also include various other components known at the time of filing of this disclosure, such as a battery management system (BMS), a battery disconnect unit (BDU), relays, and current sensors.
[0094] Figure 8 Examples include Figure 7 The diagram of the vehicle (1) with battery pack (10).
[0095] Reference Figure 8 The vehicle (1) according to this disclosure may include at least one battery pack (10) according to this disclosure.
[0096] The battery pack (10) according to this disclosure can be applied to a vehicle (1) such as an electric vehicle or a hybrid vehicle. That is, a vehicle (1) according to this disclosure may include the battery pack (10) according to this disclosure. In addition to the battery pack (10) according to this disclosure, a vehicle (1) according to this disclosure may also include various other components included in the vehicle. For example, in addition to the battery pack (10), a vehicle (1) according to this disclosure may also include a body, a motor, and control devices such as an electronic control unit (ECU).
