Description

Technical Field

[0001] This invention relates to the field of polymer materials technology, specifically to a flame-retardant and heat-insulating polypropylene composite honeycomb board and its preparation method. Background Technology

[0002] Polypropylene (PP) materials are characterized by low density, chemical resistance, good fatigue resistance, and excellent processing and molding properties, making them widely used in building decoration, transportation, packaging, and composite panels. Compared to traditional solid PP sheets, honeycomb structure sheets, through the formation of a regular honeycomb structure within the sheet, can reduce the overall weight of the sheet while increasing the specific strength and specific stiffness of the material, thus showing promising application prospects in the field of lightweight thermal insulation panels. However, PP is a flammable thermoplastic material with a low limiting oxygen index, making it prone to melting, softening, and continuous combustion upon heating, potentially accompanied by dripping during combustion. This limits its application in areas requiring high flame retardancy. Existing technologies typically improve its flame retardancy by adding flame retardants to the PP matrix, but uneven dispersion of the flame retardant with PP can affect the molding quality and performance of the honeycomb sheet.

[0003] Existing polypropylene honeycomb panels primarily utilize the honeycomb structure to reduce material weight and increase structural rigidity. However, the numerous interconnected cavities within the honeycomb cells, while reducing heat conduction to some extent, still influence thermal insulation performance due to factors such as cell size, cell wall thickness, pore structure, and the surface structure of the panel. When the bonding between the honeycomb structure and the surface layer is insufficient, or when the sides of the honeycomb cells are open, heat transfer channels can easily form at the panel edges. Furthermore, dust, moisture, or other media may enter the honeycomb cells, affecting the panel's long-term thermal insulation performance.

[0004] To address this technical deficiency, a solution is proposed. Summary of the Invention

[0046] Compared with the prior art, the beneficial effects of the present invention are as follows:

[0047] 1. The silica used in this invention is itself an inorganic heat-resistant particle. Epoxy-modified silica has better compatibility with polypropylene, improving its dispersibility and allowing it to be uniformly dispersed in the polypropylene matrix. This prevents structural defects caused by inorganic particle agglomeration and simultaneously improves the heat resistance of the matrix material. Modified hydrotalcite, after modification, has increased reactive sites. It forms Schiff base structures (-C=N-) through aldehyde-amine condensation and subsequently connects to polypropylene via chemical bonds, ensuring dispersion stability and avoiding mechanical and heat-resistant defects caused by agglomeration. Furthermore, during high-temperature combustion, hydrotalcite decomposes and releases non-flammable gases, diluting the concentration of combustible products generated by polypropylene pyrolysis and slowing the combustion spread rate. The resulting magnesium and aluminum oxides also serve as an inorganic framework, supporting the char layer and maintaining its structural integrity. Zinc borate is a flame retardant that also promotes char formation and glass phase construction. During heating, it gradually decomposes to generate molten B2O3, which can promote the dehydration and carbonization of the matrix, accelerate the formation of a dense char layer, and fill the pores and defects in the char layer. It reacts with silica at high temperatures to generate a more stable borosilicate glassy continuous phase, further blocking the transfer of oxygen and combustible pyrolysis gases, while also preventing heat conduction to unburned areas. Zinc borate works synergistically with the nitrogen-rich char layer constructed from Schiff bases, the inorganic framework provided by silica and magnesium aluminum oxides, and the three work together to form a composite char layer that combines structural strength and barrier function. This not only prevents the char layer from cracking and collapsing but also enhances the overall flame retardant and heat insulation effect.

[0048] 2. In this invention, by using the initiator BPO to graft intermediate III onto polypropylene, the interfacial compatibility between inorganic particles and the polypropylene matrix can be effectively improved, inhibiting the aggregation of inorganic particles and avoiding the defects of easy migration and aggregation of traditional physically blended flame retardants. The nitrogen atom in the Schiff base structure (-C=N-) can coordinate with the zinc in zinc borate, anchoring zinc borate and allowing it to be more uniformly dispersed in the matrix material. This prevents zinc borate particles from agglomerating, ensuring its stable and gradual decomposition during heating. Simultaneously, it shortens the spatial distance between zinc borate, silica, and the char-forming sites of the Schiff base, strengthening the synergistic effect among the three. This is more conducive to the rapid formation of a dense and stable composite barrier char layer, thus better protecting the integrity of the honeycomb porous structure and allowing its thermal insulation performance to continue to function, further improving the overall flame retardant and thermal insulation stability of the material. The uniform dispersion of inorganic particle components in polypropylene not only fully utilizes the synergistic flame retardant and char-forming effect of the multi-component components but also constructs a uniformly distributed inorganic particle network structure. Maleic anhydride-grafted polypropylene can also enhance the interfacial bonding force between the matrix and inorganic particles. While improving the melt strength of the system, it avoids the introduction of inorganic particles that would lead to a decrease in the mechanical properties of the composite material, thus ensuring the structural stability of the honeycomb structure for complete molding and long-term use. At the same time, it can also assist in supporting the composite carbon layer structure during combustion, further enhancing the barrier and protective effect of the carbon layer, allowing the complete honeycomb porous structure to continuously play its heat insulation role.

[0049] 3. In this invention, the melt index of the flame-retardant and heat-insulating polypropylene composite particles is 2.2-5 g / 10 min, and the melt index of the polypropylene particles is 2-5.8 g / 10 min. The melt viscosity of the core layer and the surface layer is similar. During hot-pressing at 160-165℃, the surface sheet and the honeycomb pore wall contact surface can be fully fused. The core layer pore wall has sufficient thermal creep resistance due to the inorganic particle network structure and the interface enhancement brought by maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene, and will not buckle or collapse. The honeycomb pore structure remains intact after hot pressing. A dense protective shell is formed on the surface of the honeycomb pore wall through the carbon layer, which inhibits the spread of flame along the pore wall and the dripping of melt. Even when heated, the pore wall can still maintain a certain structural integrity, allowing the internal cavity to continue to play a heat insulation role. Attached Figure Description

[0187] Data Analysis:

[0188] As shown in Table 1, the flame-retardant and heat-insulating polypropylene composite particles prepared by this invention possess both good flame-retardant and heat-insulating properties. Compared to Comparative Examples 1-3, the limiting oxygen index of the embodiments of this invention is higher than that of the comparative examples, and the thermal conductivity of the embodiments can be reduced to as low as 0.0985 W / m·K, exhibiting excellent heat-insulating performance. In Comparative Example 1, the lack of flame retardant compared to Example 1 naturally reduces the flame-retardant performance. In Comparative Example 2, compared to Comparative Example 1, intermediate III is not chemically bonded to polypropylene, resulting in reduced dispersibility. This hinders the uniform dispersion of intermediate III, which possesses both flame-retardant and heat-insulating functions, within the polypropylene matrix. Consequently, a continuous and stable heat-insulating layer and a flame-retardant charred layer cannot be formed within the matrix, allowing heat and oxygen to penetrate the material more easily, leading to a simultaneous decrease in both flame-retardant and heat-insulating performance.

[0189] Although embodiments of the present invention have been shown and described, it will be understood by those skilled in the art that various changes, modifications, substitutions and variations can be made to these embodiments without departing from the principles and spirit of the present invention. All equivalent changes and improvements made within the scope of the present invention should still fall within the patent coverage of the present invention.
