Description

Technical Field

[0001] This invention relates to a wasp management system that uses one or more wasp feeding stations to control foraging wasps without causing harm or stress to the wasps or the environment. The invention also relates to a semi-solid wasp feed for wasps to consume. Background Technology

[0002] Wasp infestations are a global problem affecting businesses, the public, and agriculture. They can lead to brand damage and lost revenue due to negative perceptions, potential insurance claims, and crop damage. Wasps' natural food supplies dwindle in late summer, and facing hunger, they seek alternatives such as food, drinks, and sugar consumed at parties. This can lead to conflict with humans. Conventional solutions such as wasp traps have proven ineffective and unpleasant. Traps send a negative message and have been shown to potentially increase the incidence of stings.

[0003] Since the intensive cultivation of vineyards, orchards, and fruit farms, and the development of sugary foods (including soft drinks and alcoholic beverages), humans have inadvertently fed wasps, as wasps are adapted to feed on these human-produced food sources to prevent starvation in late summer. The wasp pest phenomenon is a consequence of human food production, which has led to wasps gradually being viewed as pests.

[0004] Wasps are not picky when they begin to feel hungry, and during wasp pest season, they will forage from any available food source. Wasps searching for food are not deterred by traps or the presence of humans. They are attracted to processed foods with added sweeteners, flavorings, and aromatherapy, such as those offered at theme parks, candy stores, bakeries, cafes, bars, and garbage collection points where food scraps, packaging, and containers are disposed of.

[0005] Unlike other pollinating insects, hungry wasps are attracted by the smell of sugar and syrup in soft drinks and alcoholic beverages. Although wasps are considered beneficial insects in vineyards, orchards, and fruit farms, when hungry, they will swarm and feed on ripe fruit, causing damage and disease, and increasing the likelihood of stings to staff and visitors.

[0006] In venues such as theme parks, eradicating wasp nests is essential. Wasps frequently nest in areas that can pose a danger to visitors and staff in queuing areas, public walkways, and on rides. Although many nests are discovered and eradicated during wasp infestation season, overwhelming wasp infestations can persist because many nests are difficult to locate or eradicate. Wasps may also fly in from nests outside the theme park boundaries to feed.

[0007] Deploying traditional wasp traps actually attracts more wasps to one area, increasing the potential danger. Trapped, distressed, and dying wasps release pheromones, warning other wasps to become defensive and aggressive and more likely to sting. Trapping systems are largely ineffective at reducing intrusion or sting rates, and these devices are unsightly and unpleasant when installed near food suppliers.

[0008] Overuse of pesticides to kill wasps can have adverse environmental impacts. These chemicals are often highly toxic. They can damage soil and contaminate groundwater. As a result of cross-contamination, these toxins can harm other non-target species and may cause health problems in humans. Many of these chemical pesticides are no longer permitted for use.

[0009] Social wasps are highly evolved insects, exhibiting a high level of social organization; in other words, they are fully social species. Wasps are an integral part of food webs and play a vital role in maintaining ecosystem harmony. Healthy native wasp populations can be considered a good indicator of the overall health of the local biodiversity system.

[0010] As apex predators, wasps are vital insects in global food production. They spend much of their lifespan as natural biological control agents, preying on lepidopteran pests that could otherwise devastate entire food crops. A UK estimate suggests that wasps remove 14,000 tons of harmful pests from fruits, crops, and gardens annually.

[0011] Wasps are active pollinators when foraging for insects or nectar, collecting pollen on their nearly invisible hairs and inadvertently transferring it from one flower to another. Hibernating queen wasps store essential yeasts (particularly yeasts of the species *Saccharomyces cerevisiae*) in their intestines during the winter. They keep these yeasts alive until spring, when the queen wasp then transmits them to her colony, which ventures out and disperses the yeasts to crops used in the production of wine, beer, and bread. Wasps are also a food source for many other organisms, such as birds, spiders, dragonflies, reptiles, frogs, toads, and various small mammals, all of which include wasps in their diet.

[0012] At the end of the season, a small number of stingless male wasps are born for reproductive purposes. Otherwise, all adult wasps are female. Wasps have proboscis-like mouthparts and generally do not feed on solid food. Adult wasps spend their lives preying on insects and insect larvae, then bringing them back to the hive and chewing them up to feed the young wasp larvae. In return, the larvae secrete a nutrient syrup for the adult wasps to consume. This is a food exchange process known as copulation. Besides nectar and sap, the syrup produced by these larvae is the primary food source for adult wasps.

[0013] This food exchange process naturally decreases in late summer. As the queen bee's egg-laying decreases, the food supply from the larvae also diminishes. Faced with hunger, wasps have few options but to seek alternative food sources. Therefore, they are attracted to places with readily available carbohydrate sources, such as commercial and public places where people gather, as well as commercial areas such as hotels, leisure facilities, and gardens.

[0014] The present invention aims to provide an improved wasp management system that solves the above-mentioned problems. Summary of the Invention

Detailed Implementation

[0047] Refer to the accompanying drawings and refer to the accompanying drawings first. Figures 1 to 5 The figure illustrates a wasp feeding station according to the invention, generally indicated by reference numeral 1. The wasp feeding station 1 includes and provides a semi-solid wasp feed supply, such as gels, jellies, pastes, waxes, or similar substances, for wasp feeding and control. The wasp feeding station 1 includes a housing 2. A wasp entry vent 3 adjacent to the upper end of the housing 2 provides a passage for wasps to enter and exit the housing 2. A wasp feed module 4 is installed within the housing 2 and has an associated weighing device 5 for weighing the wasp feed module 4. A vapor distribution device 6 is installed within the housing 2 and operable to discharge wasp attractant vapor 7 to attract wasps into the housing 2, thereby feeding them at the wasp feed module 4.

[0048] The wasp feed module 4 is suspended inside the housing 2 by a hanger cable 9, which is connected to a weighing device, a weight sensor 10, which is connected to an associated indicator 11.

[0049] See details Figures 3 to 5 The wasp feed module 4 includes a plurality of spaced-apart wasp feed boxes 12. Each wasp feed box 12 includes a rectangular outer frame 14 having a top wall 15 and a bottom wall 16 interconnected by end walls 17 and 18. A feeding grid 20 is mounted within the frame 14 and includes a tube 21 with an end opening for receiving wasp feed. It should be noted that each tube 21 has dimensions that allow wasps to move through the tube 21 to access the feed inside. Each tube 21 is filled with semi-solid wasp feed. The structure of the feeding grid 20 provides an ideal surface for foraging wasps to land and feed. The feeding grid 20 is formed by intersecting horizontal panels 26 and vertical panels 27 within the frame 14 to form an array of rectangular cross-section tubes 21.

[0050] Multiple boxes 12 are spaced apart and mounted on a bracket 22 having a top plate 23 and a bottom plate 24, which respectively engage the top wall 15 and the bottom wall 16 of each wasp feed box 12 to fix the wasp feed boxes 12 to the bracket 22 in an upright, spaced parallel orientation. Figure 2 A bracket 22 is shown, which includes three stacks of wasp feed boxes 12 and two vertically spaced intermediate plates 25 to provide a stack of eighteen wasp feed boxes 12 on the bracket 22.

[0051] Special reference Figure 1 The housing 2 is an upright structure with a rectangular base 30 having an outwardly extending flange mounting plate 31. The outwardly extending flange mounting plate has a through hole 32 at each corner for securing the mounting plate 31 to a horizontal support surface, such as the ground or a flat roof, by means of mounting bolts or rivets (not shown).

[0052] Upright sidewalls 33 extend upward from the base 30, and the upper ends of these upright sidewalls are connected by a rectangular top 34. When the housing 2 is installed on the ground, wasp entry vents 3 are provided at the upper end of each sidewall 33, typically 4 or 5 meters above the base 30.

[0053] A technical access port 35 is provided in the side wall 33 at the lower end of the housing 2, and this technical access port is combined with an adjustable air intake vent 36. Multiple UVC illuminators 37 are installed inside the housing 2 and can operate at night to disinfect the internal structure and components inside the housing 2.

[0054] Once secured in place via the flat base mounting plate 31, the unit's height provides a safe 360° wasp entry vent 3 above the human interaction area, making it suitable for ground installation. The 360° wasp entry vent 3 allows wasps to freely enter and exit the wasp feed module 4 in both directions. The wasp feed module 4 is inserted and attached to the suspension cable 9 via the technical access port 35, and raised within the housing 2 to the desired operating height, securing it in place near the wasp entry vent 3 at the top of the housing 2.

[0055] An internal vapor distribution device 6 (such as an atomizer, evaporator, or similar technology) can be operated intermittently to disperse the wasp attractant aroma through the 360° wasp entry vent 3, thereby accelerating the wasp attraction process. An adjustable air intake vent 36 located at the base of the technical access port 35 provides an upward flow of internal air. A UVC illuminator 37 installed within the housing 2 operates at night to disinfect the internal structure and components.

[0056] In operation, the wasp feed module 4 is inserted into the wasp feeding station 1, which is suspended on a hanging cable 9. This hanging cable has an inline weight scale sensor 10 and an indicator 11. When the wasps consume the feed, the inline weight scale sensor 10 actively monitors the amount of feed supplied.

[0057] Once the wasp food supply is nearly depleted to a predetermined low measurement value, indicator 11 automatically sends a warning notification via Wi-Fi, mobile network, Bluetooth, or similar communication technology to a remote receiving device (such as mobile phone 13 or computer) to notify that the wasp food supply is due for replacement. The wasp food supply is then replaced as needed.

[0058] Now for reference Figure 6 The diagram illustrates another wasp feed module according to a different embodiment of the invention, generally indicated by reference numeral 40. Components similar to those previously described are designated with the same reference numerals. In this case, the wasp feed module 40 includes a wasp feed jelly block 41 mounted on a rectangular support plate 42, wherein an upwardly extending plate support cable or rod 43 is suspended within the housing 2 by a hanger cable 9 as previously described. The wasp feed jelly block 41 is manufactured using 3D printing, molding, or other suitable processes.

[0059] Now for reference Figure 7 Another wasp feed module according to another embodiment of the invention is shown, generally indicated by reference numeral 50. Components similar to those previously described are designated by the same reference numerals. In this case, a bracket 22 having a wasp feed box 12 is supported within a housing 2 on a weighing sensor plate 51, which forms a weighing device with an associated indicator 11. Using this wasp feed module 50, both feed supply and warning notification function as previously described. This wasp feed module 50 is suitable for use in other wasp feeding stations 1 as a replacement for the wasp feed module 4 previously described.

[0060] Now for reference Figure 8 This illustrates another wasp feed module according to another embodiment of the invention, generally indicated by reference numeral 54. Components similar to those previously described are designated with the same reference numerals. This is consistent with... Figure 6 The arrangement shown is similar; however, in this case, the wasp feed jelly block 41 is mounted on the weight scale sensor plate 51. Using this wasp feed module 54, both the feed supply and warning notification functions as previously described. This wasp feed module 54 is suitable for use in other wasp feeding stations 1.

[0061] Figures 9 to 12Various arrangements for mounting the housing 2 on multiple different supports are shown. Components similar to those previously described are designated with the same reference numerals.

[0062] Figure 9 A housing 2 is shown, wherein a horizontal base plate 55 protrudes outward at the bottom of the housing 2 and has a through hole 56 for bolting the base plate 55 to a horizontal support surface, such as the ground or a flat roof.

[0063] Figure 10 A suspension cable 58 or rod is shown mounted on the top of housing 2 for suspending housing 2 on an overhead support.

[0064] Figure 11 An angled base plate 59 is shown at the bottom of the housing 2, which is used to mount the housing 2 on a sloping roof or the like.

[0065] Figure 12 A housing 2 with laterally projecting mounting brackets 60 is shown for securing the housing 2 to, for example, a wall. Each mounting bracket 60 has a horizontal inner leg 61 that projects outward from the housing 2 and terminates in an upright outer leg 62 with a through hole 63 for fasteners to secure the outer leg 62 to an upright support surface, such as a wall or column.

[0066] Now for reference Figure 13 and Figure 14 The figure illustrates a wasp feeding station according to another embodiment of the invention, generally indicated by reference numeral 70. Components similar to those previously described are designated by the same reference numerals. In this case, the wasp feeding station 70 has a housing 2 mounted on a mobile support chassis comprising a semi-trailer 71 having a loading bed 75 on which the housing 2 of the wasp feeding station 70 is mounted. The housing 2 is of two segments, namely a lower segment 72 and an upper segment 73. The upper segment 73 is hingedly attached to the lower segment 72 by a hinge 74, such that the upper portion 73 of the housing 2 can be mounted on the loading bed 75 as follows: Figure 13 The upright operating position shown is similar to... Figure 14 The load bed 75 shown is folded between horizontal storage positions. In the storage position, the upper end 76 of the housing 2 is supported at the front end of the semi-trailer 71 in an associated upwardly opening receiver slot 77 on the support frame 78.

[0067] It should be understood that the wasp feeding station 70 can be easily transported to any desired location, with the housing 2 in a folded storage position, and subsequently folded and unfolded into an upright operating position on the loading bed 75 of the semi-trailer 71 for use. This is particularly useful for controlling wasps in temporary events such as concerts, markets, or sporting events.

[0068] UV tracer dyes can be added to semi-solid wasp feed to facilitate the tracing of wasp nest locations. Then, at night, UV-emitting drones and other suitable UV-emitting devices are used to survey the area to locate wasp nests. The wasp feeding station 1 may include a camera system integrated with species recognition and AI technologies to warn of invasive species and provide scientific data such as wasp population fluctuations.

[0069] Various wasp feeding station configurations combine the technologies and processes described previously.

[0070] This invention utilizes insertable semi-solid wasp feed, which features active monitoring of feed quantity and automatic notification of feed replenishment upon expiration. The control system also incorporates a method for tracing wasp nest locations.

[0071] Advantageously, the wasp pest management system of the present invention produces a wasp-free environment. The system generally brings benefits to businesses, organizations, agriculture, and society, and has a positive impact on biodiversity and the environment by providing wasp control without harming the ecosystem.

[0072] In operation, the control process removes wasps from food suppliers, dining areas, and waste disposal points. This feeding technology works without harming the insects and eliminates any need for a trapping system. Once activated, the carbohydrate-seeking wasp pest population feeds exclusively from this system. Interaction between wasp pests and humans ceases, and sting rates and wasp complaints drop to near zero.

[0073] The present invention provides a wasp feeding station that provides an insertable semi-solid wasp feed supply, such as gel, jelly, paste, wax or similar substances, for wasp feeding and control, and the wasp feed supply can be replaced as needed during the control process.

[0074] Advantageously, the amount of wasp food is actively monitored using weight, size, or other suitable sensor devices or apparatus to detect the depletion of wasp food supplies. When the amount of wasp food in the wasp feeding station is sensed to be at a preset low level or near depletion, the monitoring device automatically sends a warning notification via networking technologies such as Wi-Fi, mobile networks, or Bluetooth to a remote receiving device such as a mobile phone or computer, notifying the wasp food supply of its due date for replenishment.

[0075] The present invention also provides a method for providing semi-solid wasp feed in a box, container, or other suitable containment structure or arrangement that provides an ideal environment and surface for wasps to feed on the wasp feed supply. This method can provide semi-solid wasp feed as jelly blocks produced using 3D printing, molding, or other suitable manufacturing processes.

[0076] The present invention also provides a method for locating wasp nests by adding UV dyes included in wasp feed supplies and for surveying areas using UV tracking devices such as UV-emitting drones and other UV-emitting devices.

[0077] The apparatus and method of the present invention may also include: integrating a camera system with species identification and AI technologies to warn of invasive species and provide scientific data such as wasp population fluctuations.

[0078] Conveniently, the present invention provides a series of wasp feeding stations suitable for deployment in a variety of applications, such as ground mounting, suspended, side mounting, roof mounting and mobile deployment.

[0079] This invention provides a method for controlling wasps by feeding them semi-solid wasp feed without causing harm or stress to the insects or the environment.

[0080] Although the shell 2 described herein has a rectangular cross-section, it may have other configurations. For example, it may have a cylindrical cross-section.

[0081] The terms “including” and “contains” and any variations thereof required for grammatical reasons shall be considered interchangeable and given the broadest possible interpretation.

[0082] The present invention is not limited to the embodiments described above, but may be modified in both construction and details within the scope of the appended claims.
