[0014] Specific embodiments of one or more implementations of the devices and methods disclosed herein are presented by way of example rather than limitation, with reference to the accompanying drawings.

[0015] Figure 1 A simplified schematic diagram of a carbon capture system 1 according to one or more embodiments is shown. The carbon capture system 1 may include a manufacturing or chemical system 10 that generates flue gas, which is intended to be captured without being released into the environment. The flue gas may be discharged from the outlet of the manufacturing or chemical system 10. Such gases include, for example, carbon dioxide, nitrogen, sulfur dioxide, and carbon monoxide. The manufacturing or chemical system 10 can be of any type, including but not limited to oil refineries.

[0016] The carbon capture system 1 may further include an absorption tower 100. The absorption tower 100 may be a regenerated foam contactor (RFC) equipped with a corrugated screen packing assembly 110, which includes a plurality of corrugated screen packing modules 111.

[0017] Figure 2 A non-limiting example of a corrugated screen packing module 111 is shown. The corrugated screen packing module 111 may be formed of a plurality of corrugated structures 114. The corrugated screen packing module 111 may further include other structures, such as a mesh layer, a support structure for supporting the corrugated screen packing module and / or its components, and / or a mounting structure for mounting the corrugated screen packing module 111 on the outer wall of the absorption tower 100.

[0018] The input gas line 501 can extend from the outlet of the manufacturing or chemical system 10 to the input gas inlet 107 of the absorption tower 100. The input gas inlet 107 can be located in or near the upstream portion of the absorption tower 100. The input gas inlet 107 can be located upstream of the entire corrugated screen packing assembly 110.

[0019] The carbon capture system 1 may further include a solvent tank 210. The solvent tank 210 can store a liquid solvent. The liquid solvent can be an amine, amino acid salt, carbonate system, ammonia, immiscible liquid, ionic liquid, or another liquid solvent known in the art to be effective for carbon capture. As described below, the liquid solvent in the solvent tank 210 can be a lean liquid solvent. A lean solvent line 502 can extend from the lean solvent outlet of the solvent tank 210 to the lean solvent inlet 108 of the absorber tower 100. The lean solvent inlet 108 can be located in or near the upstream portion of the absorber tower 100. The lean solvent inlet 108 is located upstream of the entire corrugated screen packing assembly 110.

[0020] As described above, the input gas inlet 107 and the lean solvent inlet 108 can be located upstream of or near the absorber 100, upstream of the corrugated screen packing assembly 110. Therefore, the absorber 100 can cause the input gas from the gas inlet 107 and the lean solvent from the lean solvent inlet 108 to flow downstream in parallel through the corrugated screen packing assembly 110. That is, the absorber 100 can include a parallel flow contactor system in the form of the corrugated screen packing assembly 110. The parallel flow of the input gas and lean solvent through the corrugated screen packing assembly 110 results in the absorption of carbon dioxide from the input gas into the solvent, removal of carbon dioxide from the input gas, and the formation of a carbon dioxide-rich solvent.

[0021] The input gas and lean solvent fed into the absorber 100 can flow downstream in a gas-liquid co-current configuration under pulsed hydrodynamic conditions. Each corrugated screen packing module in the corrugated screen packing module 111 can be formed by a vortex screen that maximizes the solvent pulse effect while minimizing the metal packing material. The corrugated screen packing assembly 110 can cause the absorber 100 to operate under foam conditions in a two-phase flow, wherein millions of bubbles and droplets are formed in the absorber 100. Bubbles can be generated and regenerated as the foam zone collapses. The lean solvent in the liquid phase and the input gas in the gas phase can be fed into the absorber in a co-current flow from the upstream section, flow through the corrugated screen packing assembly 110 under pulsed conditions, and exit at the downstream section of the absorber 100. Depending on the flow rate and the design of the corrugated screen packing assembly 110, pulsed flow may occur due to hydrodynamic multiphase phenomena. Gas can pass through multiple foam zones along the corrugated screen packing assembly 110, and carbon dioxide can be absorbed into the lean solvent.

[0022] The absorber 100, according to one or more embodiments, can accommodate high gas flow rates and liquid / gas ratios without excessive back pressure or overflow within the absorber 100. The absorber 100 can also be used in processes with precipitated solvents or high entrained solids content, thereby creating a three-phase contactor. Even under high particle loads and high viscosity, the absorber 100 can experience minimal or no scaling or additional pressure drop losses.

[0023] The absorption tower 100 may include a liquid phase outlet and a gas phase outlet.

[0024] It has been found that because the corrugated screen packing assembly 110 can generate extreme turbulence to induce severe mixing of the input gas and solvent and form a multi-bubble liquid, the separation of the liquid and gas phases in the absorption tower 100 can produce a main liquid phase still containing some gas components and a main gas phase still containing some liquid components. In other words, the absorption tower 100 can separate the mixture into a main liquid phase with some gas-carrying components and a main gas phase with entrained liquid components.

[0025] The carbon capture system 1 may further include a post-absorption tower treatment assembly 300. The post-absorption tower treatment assembly 300 may include a first container 310 and a second container 320. The first container 310 may be a gas-liquid separator or a liquid degassing container, and the second container 320 may be a gas-liquid separator or a gas separation container.

[0026] Figure 3A and Figure 3B A non-limiting example of a first container 310 is shown. The first container 310 may define a first direction and a second direction. The first direction may be an upward direction and the second direction may be a downward direction, but this disclosure is not limited thereto. The first container 310 may include a liquid inlet 311, and a liquid line 505 may connect the liquid inlet 311 of the first container 310 to a liquid outlet of the absorber tower 100. The first container 310 may include a housing 317. The first container 310 may include a mesh layer 319 in the first direction of the liquid inlet 311. The first container 310 may include a liquid outlet 313 at or near an end portion of the housing 317 in the second direction and a gas outlet 315 at or near an end portion of the housing 317 in the first direction.

[0027] The main liquid phase of the mixture exits the liquid phase outlet of the absorber 100 and enters the first container 310 via the liquid phase line 505, where the mixture can be further separated into liquid component L1 and gas component G1'. Gas component G1' may include some liquid. Gas component G1' can rise from the liquid phase inlet 311 and pass through the grid layer 319 to be further separated into gas component G2' and liquid component L2. Gas component G2' may include some liquid. Gas component G2' can exit the first container 310 through the gas outlet 315. Liquid component L1 from the liquid phase inlet 311 and liquid component L2 from the grid layer 319 can fall by gravity and form a pool 318 at the end portion of the shell 317 in the second direction. Then liquid components L1 and L2 can exit the first container 310 from the liquid outlet 313.

[0028] Figure 4A and Figure 4BA non-limiting example of a second container 320 is shown. The second container 320 may define a first direction and a second direction. The first direction may be upward, and the second direction may be downward, but this disclosure is not limited thereto. The second container 320 may include a first gas inlet 321 and a second gas inlet 322. A first gas line 506 may connect the first gas inlet 321 of the second container 320 to the gas outlet of the absorption tower 100, and a second gas line 507 may connect the second gas inlet 322 of the second container 320 to the gas outlet 315 of the first container 310. The second container 320 may include a housing 327. The second container 320 may include a mesh layer 329 in the first direction of the first gas inlet 321 and the second gas inlet 322. The second container 320 may include a liquid outlet 323 at or near an end portion of the housing 327 in the second direction and a gas outlet 325 at or near an end portion of the housing 327 in the first direction.

[0029] The main gas phase of the mixture can exit the gas phase outlet of the absorber 100 and enter the second container 320 via the first gas phase inlet 321 through the first gas phase line 506. Gas exiting the first container 310 via the gas outlet 315 can enter the second container 320 via the second gas phase inlet 322 through the second gas phase line 507. Gas component G3' can rise from the first gas phase inlet 321, and gas component G4' can rise from the second gas phase inlet 322 and pass through the grid layer 329 to separate into gas component G5' and liquid component L3. Gas components G3', G4', and G5' may include some liquid. Gas component G5' can exit the second container 320 via the gas outlet 325. Liquid component L3 from the grid layer 329 can fall by gravity and form a pool 328 at the end portion of the housing 327 in the second direction. Although not shown, the gas phase entering the first gas phase inlet 321 and / or the gas entering the second gas phase inlet 322 may include a liquid component, which falls by gravity into a pool 328 at the end portion of the housing 327 in the second direction. The liquid component L3 can then exit the second container 320 from the liquid outlet 323.

[0030] The gas component G5' exiting the second container 320 from gas outlet 325 can be the input gas, wherein carbon dioxide is removed from the input gas via absorber 100, and most or all of the solvent is removed therefrom via absorber 100, the first container 310, and the second container 320. Gas outlet 325 of the second container can be connected to gas discharge line 504. The input gas from which carbon dioxide and solvent have been removed can be removed from the carbon capture system 1 via gas discharge line 504. Alternatively, the input gas from which carbon dioxide and solvent have been removed can be discharged from the carbon capture system 1 via gas discharge line 504.

[0031] Liquid components L1, L2, and L3 can be rich solvents in which carbon dioxide from the input gas is absorbed, but gaseous components are removed. The liquid outlet 313 of the first container 310 can be connected to the first rich solvent line 508, and the liquid outlet 323 of the second container 320 can be connected to the second rich solvent line 509.

[0032] Although the mesh layer 319 for the first container 310 and the mesh layer 329 for the second container 320 have been disclosed above, the first container 310 and the second container 320 are not limited thereto and may include other defogging structures.

[0033] The post-absorption tower treatment assembly 300 allows for the removal of gas from the liquid phase and liquid from the gas phase according to desired and controlled levels. The sizes of the first container 310 and the second container 320 can be set based on the phase separation criteria for the specific application of the carbon capture system 1.

[0034] As described above, the mixture within absorber 100 can be separated into a primary liquid phase containing some gas and a primary gas phase containing entrained liquid. A pump (not shown) can be used to move the rich solvent to stripper 200. However, solvent with excess gas may cause cavitation in the pump. A post-absorber treatment assembly 300 according to one or more embodiments removes gas from the rich solvent in a controlled manner to prevent or minimize such cavitation.

[0035] Furthermore, gases containing excess liquid may not meet process separation component specifications, may not meet environmental expectations, and / or may result in solvent loss through emissions. A post-absorption tower treatment assembly 300, according to one or more embodiments, removes liquid from the gas phase in a controlled manner to prevent non-compliance with process separation component specifications of the carbon capture system 1, reduce or eliminate non-environmentally desirable emissions, and / or reduce solvent loss.

[0036] Additionally, liquid droplets in the gas can damage the gas transport system. A post-absorption tower treatment assembly 300 according to one or more embodiments can remove liquid from the gas phase in a controlled manner to prevent or minimize such damage.

[0037] Although Figure 1 A first container 310 for removing gas from the liquid phase of a mixture and a second container 320 for removing liquid from the gas phase of a mixture are shown. However, in applications where the absorber 100 sufficiently removes gas from the liquid phase, the post-absorber treatment assembly 300 may include only the second container 320, and in applications where the absorber 100 sufficiently removes liquid from the gas phase, the post-absorber treatment assembly 300 may include only the first container 320.

[0038] The carbon capture system 1 may also include a stripping tower 200. The stripping tower 200 may define a first direction and a second direction. The first direction may be upward, and the second direction may be downward, but this disclosure is not limited thereto. A first rich solvent line 508 may extend from the liquid outlet 313 of the first container 310 to the first rich solvent inlet of the stripping tower 200, and a second rich solvent line 509 may extend from the liquid outlet 323 of the second container 320 to the second rich solvent inlet of the stripping tower 200. Alternatively, the first rich solvent line 508 and the second rich solvent line 509 may be combined into a single rich solvent line extending to a single rich solvent inlet of the stripping tower 200.

[0039] The first rich solvent inlet and the second rich solvent inlet, or a single rich solvent inlet, of the stripping tower 200 may be located at or near the end portion of the stripping tower 200 in a first direction. The rich solvent may move from the liquid outlet 313 of the first container 310 via the first rich solvent line 508 and from the liquid outlet 323 of the second container 320 via the second rich solvent line 509, and be fed into the first rich solvent inlet and the second rich solvent inlet, or a single rich solvent inlet, of the stripping tower 200. The rich solvent may be pumped into the stripping tower 200. The rich solvent may be heated, for example, by a heat exchanger before being fed into the stripping tower 200. The carbon capture system 1 may also include a solvent line 511 extending from the solvent outlet of the stripping tower 200 to the solvent inlet of the solvent tank 210.

[0040] The stripping column 200 can be a stripping column known in the art for separating carbon dioxide from a carbon dioxide-rich solvent. As a non-limiting example, the stripping column 200 may include packing material (not shown), and at least a reboiler 201, a condenser 203, and a reflux condenser 205 may be connected to the stripping column 200. The rich solvent fed into the rich solvent inlet of the stripping column 200 may fall along a second direction on the packing material due to gravity to the end portion of the stripping column 200, where the solvent can be fed into the reboiler 201. Although... Figure 1A separate line from the solvent line 511 fed into reboiler 201 is shown, but the feed line into reboiler 201 can branch off from solvent line 511. Reboiler 201 can heat the solvent, causing water in the solvent to vaporize and be fed back into stripper 200. The vapor and carbon dioxide can rise in a first direction to the end portion of stripper 200 and flow through condenser 203, where they are cooled to form liquid water and gaseous carbon dioxide, which are then fed into reflux 205. Water can be fed back into stripper 200 from reflux 205 and mixed with solvent in a second reverse direction and / or at solvent tank 210 at the end portion of stripper 200. Thus, lean solvent can be fed into solvent tank 210 and subsequently recycled back to absorber 100 as described above. Gaseous carbon dioxide can be removed from reflux 205 via carbon dioxide line 513. Gaseous carbon dioxide can then be cooled into a liquid and stored and / or used for other applications.

[0041] Although the above references to the manufacturing or chemical system 10 are non-limiting examples of refineries, the carbon capture system 1 can be applied to a variety of carbon capture platforms, including, for example, natural gas processing, post-combustion capture, air pollution control, indoor air quality management, and direct air capture.

[0042] Figure 5 The diagram illustrates a post-absorption tower treatment tower 300 according to one or more embodiments. The absorption tower 100 may include only a single outlet that feeds a mixture (“mixture”) of an input gas from which carbon dioxide has been removed and a solvent-rich mixture in which carbon dioxide has been absorbed to the post-absorption tower treatment assembly 300. The mixture may be moved from the absorption tower 100 to a first container 310 of the post-absorption tower treatment assembly 300 via a mixture line 503. Figure 5 The post-absorption tower treatment assembly 300 shown is similar to Figure 1 The post-absorption tower processing assembly shown, and its first container 310 may be similar to Figure 1 And the first container 310 shown in Figure 3. However, instead of Figure 1 The single second container 320 shown is used to process the gas leaving the first container 310, but the post-absorption tower treatment assembly 300 may include multiple containers to do so. The post-absorption tower treatment assembly 300 may include, for example, a second container 320a, a third container 320b, a fourth container 320c, and a fifth container 320d. However, Figure 5 The five containers shown are not limited in any way, and the post-absorption tower treatment assembly 300 may include three containers, four containers, six containers, etc., to adequately remove liquid from the input gas leaving the absorption tower 100.

[0043] The second container 320a, the third container 320b, the fourth container 320c, and the fifth container 320d can be similar to Figure 1 And the second container 320 shown in Figure 4.

[0044] The second container 320a can receive the gas exiting the first container 310 and separate the droplets from the gas via the second gas phase line 507. The gas separated from the second container 320a can be received by the third container 320b via the third gas phase line 510a, and the liquid separated from the second container 320a can be received by the stripping tower 200 via the second rich solvent line 509a.

[0045] The third container 320b can separate droplets from the gas received from the second container 320a. The gas separated from the third container 320b can be received by the fourth container 320c via the fourth gas phase line 510b, and the liquid separated from the third container 320b can be received by the stripping tower 200 via the third rich solvent line 509b.

[0046] The fourth container 320c can separate droplets from the gas received from the third container 320b. The gas separated from the fourth container 320c can be received by the fifth container 320d via the fifth gas phase line 510c, and the liquid separated from the fourth container 320c can be received by the stripping tower 200 via the fourth rich solvent line 509c.

[0047] The fifth container 320d can separate droplets from the gas received from the fourth container 320c. The liquid separated from the fifth container 320d can be received by the stripping tower 200 via the fifth solvent-rich line 509d. The gas separated from the fifth container 320d (which is the input gas with carbon dioxide and solvent removed) can be removed from the carbon capture system 1 via the gas discharge line 504. Alternatively, the input gas with carbon dioxide and solvent removed can be discharged from the carbon capture system 1 via the gas discharge line 504.

[0048] Figure 6 The diagram illustrates an absorption and post-absorption treatment process according to one or more embodiments. In step S1, an input gas containing feed gas or feed vapor and lean solvent are fed into absorption tower 100. The feed gas used for feed vapor can be, for example, carbon dioxide from direct capture or manufacturing or chemical system 10. However, the feed gas or feed vapor is not limited to this. The lean solvent can come from solvent tank 210 or from another source.

[0049] In step S2, the absorber 100 may induce the input gas and lean solvent to flow in parallel through the corrugated screen packing assembly 110 of the absorber 100 to form a mixture (“mixture”) in which a rich solvent in which the feed gas or feed vapor is absorbed and an input gas in which the feed gas or feed vapor is removed.

[0050] In step S3, if the absorber 100 has multiple outlets, such that there are separate outlets for the liquid phase and the gas phase of the mixture, the process moves to step S4.

[0051] In step 4, the absorber 100 separates the mixture into a main liquid phase primarily containing a solvent-rich phase of feed gas or vapor and a main gas phase primarily containing input gas from which the feed gas or vapor has been removed. The main liquid phase is fed into the first container 310 of the post-absorber processing assembly 300, and the main gas phase from the absorber 100 is fed into the second container 320 of the post-absorber processing assembly 300. As described above, the main liquid phase may still contain some gas, and the main gas phase may still contain some liquid.

[0052] In step S5, the first container 310 removes gas from the liquid phase and feeds the liquid into the stripping tower 200, while the separated gas is fed into the second container 320. The separated gas may still contain some liquid.

[0053] In step S6, the second container 320 can remove liquid from the gas phase and can discharge gas while feeding the separated liquid into the stripping tower 200. Steps S5 and S6 can occur simultaneously and / or continuously. The gas discharged from the second container can be removed from the post-absorption tower treatment assembly 300.

[0054] In step S3, if the absorption tower 100 has a single outlet for the mixture, the process moves to step S7.

[0055] In step S7, the mixture is fed from the absorption tower 100 into the first container 310 of the post-absorption tower treatment assembly 300.

[0056] In step S8, the first container 310 separates the mixture into a liquid phase and a gas phase, and feeds the liquid into the stripping tower 200 while feeding the separated gas phase into the second container 320. The separated gas may still contain some liquid.

[0057] In step S9, the second container 320A removes liquid from the gas phase and feeds the separated liquid into the stripping tower 200, while the separated gas phase can be fed into the third container 320B or discharged. Step S9 can be repeated until liquid is sufficiently removed from the gas phase. For example, if the separated gas phase is fed into the third container, step S9 can be repeated, and the gas phase can be fed into the fourth container or discharged, and so on.

[0058] Although the absorption tower 100 and the post-absorption tower treatment assembly 300 have been described above in the context of carbon capture system 1, this is merely illustrative and the absorption tower 100 and the post-absorption tower treatment assembly 300 are not limited thereto. That is, the absorption tower 100 and the post-absorption tower treatment assembly 300 can be used in other systems. For example, the absorption tower 100 and the post-absorption tower treatment assembly 300 can be used in systems that remove any other gas or vapor from the input gas, including but not limited to corrosive gas emissions, acidic fumes, odors, sulfur dioxide, and carbon monoxide. Carbon dioxide and any other gas or vapor removed from the input gas are examples of feed gas or feed vapor.

[0059] While the post-absorption tower processing assembly 300 in one or more of the above embodiments feeds liquid from the first container and the second container 320 to the stripping tower 200, this is not intended to limit it. For example, an additional container similar to the first container 310 may be provided downstream of the first container 310 and / or the second container 320 to further separate the liquid from the first container 310 and / or the second container into liquid and gas, provided that the liquid from the first container 310 and / or the second container still contains some gas trapped therein.
