[0065] refer to Figure 1 and Figure 2 Reference numeral 10 generally indicates a patient support device including a support frame 14 and a guardrail assembly 18. The guardrail assembly 18 includes a support guardrail 22 and a plurality of pivot supports 26 connecting the support guardrail 22 to the support frame 14. The plurality of pivot supports 26 extend away from the support frame 14 at a lateral angle α between 95 degrees and 120 degrees relative to a planar extension 30 of the support frame 14. The plurality of pivot supports 26 operate to move the support guardrail 22 between an extended position, in which the support guardrail 22 is spaced apart from the support frame 14, and in a retracted position, the support guardrail 22 is adjacent to the support frame 14.
[0066] Refer again Figure 1 and Figure 2 The illustrated patient support device 10 includes a mattress 34 supported on a support frame 14. The mattress 34 may include a substantially waterproof mattress cover 38 designed to protect the mattress 34. The support frame 14 may include an adjustable mattress support 42 configured to elevate one or more of the head section 46, body section 50, and foot section 54. The head end 58 of the support frame 14 may include a push handle 62 adjustable according to caregiver preferences. Additionally, the head end 58 of the support frame 14 may include a canister support 64 for supplying a contained gas (such as oxygen) to the patient. The support frame 14 is mounted on a plurality of casters 66, which may be powered or unpowered. Foot brakes 70 may be provided at each caster 66 to minimize movement of the patient support device 10. The foot end 74 of the support frame 14 includes a foot plate 78, which may include a graphical user interface for interacting with the control system of the patient support device 10. Figure 28 ) and other features.
[0067] Still referencing Figure 1 and Figure 2 The guardrail assembly 18 includes first and second supporting guardrails 22 on a first side and a second side of the supporting frame 14, respectively. For example... Figure 1 and Figure 2As clearly shown, the support rails 22 on the second side of the support frame 14 flare outward at an angle between 95 and 120 degrees relative to the planar extension 30 of the support frame 14. In some cases, the angle may vary between 100 and 115 degrees relative to the planar extension 30 of the support frame 14. It is conceivable that each support rail can be adjusted in this manner. As shown, the support rails 22 on the second side of the support frame 14 include a wireless patient monitoring interface 82. It is conceivable that the support rails 22 on the first side of the support frame 14 may also include a wireless patient monitoring interface 82. Each support rail 22 is supported on a plurality of pivot supports 26. Figure 1 and Figure 2 In the configuration shown, five pivot supports 26 are attached to each support rail on the first and second sides of the support frame 14. It is generally anticipated that the pivot supports 26 can operate between an extended and retracted position. For each of the support rails 22, the pivot support 26 rotates downwards along arrow A until the attached support rail 22 is adjacent to and parallel to the support frame 14. It is also envisioned that multiple intermediate stops can be defined between the retracted and extended positions. These intermediate stops may be sufficient to hold each support rail 22 at a height between the retracted and extended positions. This operability is not only convenient for supporting patients of different sizes but also facilitates the patient's ability to enter and exit relative to the patient support device 10.
[0068] Now for reference Figure 3 The illustrated patient support device 100 includes a support frame 104 having a guardrail assembly 108, which includes a first support guardrail 114 and a second support guardrail 114. Each support guardrail 114 is pivotally connected to the support frame 104 and operable between a retracted position and an extended position. The first support guardrail 114, the second support guardrail 114, or both, may include a wireless patient monitoring interface 118. In the illustrated configuration, the wireless patient monitoring interface 118 is located at the middle portion of the second support guardrail 114 of the guardrail assembly 108. The first support guardrail 114 includes a first opening and a second opening 122 respectively located at a front and a rear portion of the first support guardrail 114. Similarly, the second support guardrail 114 includes a first opening and a second opening 122 located at a front and a rear position of the second support guardrail 114.
[0069] In addition, such as Figure 3As shown, a portion of each of the first and second openings 122 of the first support rail 114 is at least partially closed by a transparent substrate 130. Similarly, a portion of each of the first and second openings 122 of the second support rail 114 is at least partially closed by a transparent substrate 130. The transparent substrate 130 provides visibility to the patient. It is generally conceivable that one or both of the first and second openings 122 of the support rail 114 may include a hole 140. The size of the hole 140 is determined to receive a limb of the patient, such as an arm. It is conceivable that a caregiver can monitor the patient's vital signs or draw blood from the patient through the hole 140. It should be noted that for Figure 3 The construction described herein is such that the front and rear sides of each of the support rails 114 are generally symmetrical and generally represent mirror images of each other. To move the support rails 114 to the retracted position, at least one four-bar linkage 144 is operatively coupled between each of the support rails 114 and the support frame 104. The top surface of each of the support rails 114 may also include an arm plate 146 molded into the top surface of the support rail 114, which allows for various procedures, such as venipuncture procedures.
[0070] Now for reference Figure 4A and 4BThe illustrated patient support device 200 includes a guardrail assembly 204 comprising a first support guardrail 208 and a second support guardrail 208, both pivotally coupled to a support frame 212 of the patient support device 200. The first and second support guardrails 208 are each operable between a stowed position and an extended position. For example, on the left side of the patient support device 200, the first support guardrail 208 can be rotated from the extended position to the stowed position by rotating it outward and downward along arrow 216. The second support guardrail 208 will similarly rotate outward and downward, but on the right side of the patient support device 200. To extend the right side, the second support guardrail 208 will rotate outward and upward. The first support guardrail 208 will similarly move outward and upward to extend the left side. A wireless patient monitoring interface 224 is positioned at the middle portion of at least one of the support guardrails 208, but can be positioned anywhere along either support guardrail 208. Furthermore, openings 220 are provided at the front and rear portions of each support rail 208. Openings 220 may include a tray 230 operable between vertical positions, in which the planar extension of tray 230 is substantially aligned with the planar extension of support rail 208, and the tray is positioned within the corresponding opening 220. Each tray 230 can rotate approximately 270 degrees about arrow 228 to a horizontal position, in which the tray 230 extends at least partially over the mattress 236 of the support frame 212. It is generally conceivable that the tray 230 can be rotated outwards to a position substantially parallel to the top surface of the mattress 236 or the floor of the care facility.
[0071] Refer again Figure 4A and 4B The body section 240 or head section 242 of the mattress 236 of the patient support device 200 can rotate to allow the patient to assume an upright sitting position. In other words, when the patient is in an upright sitting position, the body section 240 or head section 242 of the mattress 236 can rotate upward to provide back support to the patient. In this configuration, the tray 230 defines an armboard surface configured to support the patient's arms for monitoring vital signs or various procedures, such as venous cut-off procedures. It is generally conceivable that the tray 230 of each supporting guardrail 208 of the guardrail assembly 204 can also provide support for the patient's personal belongings, such as drinks, snacks, mobile phones, and similar items.
[0072] like Figure 5As shown, the example configuration for the patient support device 300 includes a support frame 304 with a guardrail assembly 308. The guardrail assembly 308 includes a two-section or single-section telescopic guardrail in the form of sliding guardrail segments 312. Each sliding guardrail segment 312 may include one or more sliding bars 320. It is conceivable that each sliding guardrail segment 312 can extend to provide additional protection to the patient and minimize entry or exit relative to the patient support device 300. It is also conceivable that the ends of the sliding guardrail segments 312 can be independently adjusted to provide additional coverage when needed. Alternatively, the ends of the sliding guardrail segments 312 can be synchronized such that the ends of each sliding guardrail segment 312 move uniformly inward and outward. In this case, when the handle 316 at the end of one of the sliding guardrail segments 312 is pulled outward, the sliding guardrail segments 312 on opposite sides of the guardrail assembly 308 move outward simultaneously. Furthermore, each sliding guardrail segment 312 may have an intermediate stop to provide multiple lengths of sliding guardrail segments 312 during use. In other words, the sliding guardrail segment 312 can move from an extended position to a retracted position, as well as various positions between the extended and retracted positions. Notably, the entirety of each sliding bar of each sliding guardrail segment 312 can be cleaned as a whole. This is due to the configuration of the sliding guardrail segment 312 and the fact that each sliding bar is at least partially exposed between the extended and retracted positions for ease of cleaning. It is also worth noting that it is conceivable that the guardrail assembly 308 of the patient support device 300 may include only one support guardrail, and further, each guardrail assembly 308 may include only one sliding guardrail segment 312 instead of two sliding guardrail segments 312.
[0073] Refer again Figure 5 Although each sliding guardrail segment 312 includes three side bars 320, it is also conceivable that a configuration with two side bars 320, and possibly even one side bar 320, could be provided. Each sliding guardrail segment 312 may also include more than three side bars 320. As shown, each sliding guardrail segment 312 includes multiple openings through which the side bars 320 extend. Additionally, the recessed top portion of the support rail 310 is configured to receive the topmost bar 320 of each sliding guardrail segment 312. Furthermore, the bars 320 of each sliding guardrail segment 312 may be vertically spaced at equal or unequal distances. A handle 316 is provided on the distal end of the bar 320 to provide support for the caregiver or patient. It is conceivable that the handle 316 may be made of a polymer material, and the outer edge of the handle 316 may be substantially aligned with the outer edge of the sliding guardrail segment 312 to which it is attached.
[0074] Now for reference Figure 6The illustrated patient support device 400 includes a guardrail assembly 404 having a support guardrail 408 pivotally connected to a support frame 412 and operable between a stowed position and an unfolded position. The support guardrail 408 includes a base 416 and a top section 420. The base 416 includes a two-part foldable assembly having a top portion 422 and a bottom portion 424. The top portion 422 and the bottom portion 424 are configured to rotate downwards along arrow 426 beneath a mattress 428. In other words, the guardrail assembly 404 is configured to rotate to a position positioned beneath the mattress 428 on the patient support device 400. This movement creates an unobstructed area and allows caregivers to assist the patient without the obstruction of the support guardrail 408. It is generally conceivable that the hinge feature 432 (such as a pivot or hinge) can be positioned between the base 416 and the top section 420 so that the base 416 and the top section 420 can be easily rotated to a position under the mattress 428.
[0075] like Figure 7 As exemplified, the patient support device 500 includes a guardrail assembly 504 with a support rail 508. The patient support device 500 includes a support frame 512 and a mattress 516. The support rail 508 of the guardrail assembly 504 is operatively coupled to the support frame 512. More specifically, the support rail 508 is pivotally coupled to the support frame 512 and is operable between a stowed position and an extended position, the stowed position being under or adjacent to the mattress 516. The support rail 508 includes a two-part construction. Each support rail 508 includes a base 520 and a top section 524. The top section 524 is laterally slidable relative to the base 520 between a foot position adjacent to the foot plate 522 of the patient support device 500 and a head position adjacent to the head of the patient support device 500. It is also contemplated that the top section 524 can be adjusted to virtually any position between the foot position and the head position. In some cases, it is envisioned that release devices may be provided on one or both of the top section 524 and the base 520 to allow the top section 524 to retract relative to the base 520 for cleaning, repair, or replacement. Additionally, it is envisioned that an electrical connection may be provided between the base 520 and the top section 524. This electrical connection is configured to provide data, power, or both to a wireless patient monitoring interface 530 disposed at the intermediate portion of at least one of the support rails 508. Figure 7 The patient support device 500 may be included on each of the first and second sides of the patient support device 500, or on only one side of the patient support device 500.
[0076] Now for reference Figure 8The illustrated patient support device 600 includes a support frame 604, a guardrail assembly 608, a foot section 610, a body section 612, and a head section 614, all of which are adjustable. A monitor holder 620 is coupled to the foot section 610 of the support frame 604. When the foot section 610 is adjusted, the monitor holder 620 moves with the foot section 610. Figure 8 As illustrated, the monitor stand 620 includes a baffle 624 that prevents items from falling off the base 626 of the monitor stand 620 when the foot section 610 rotates downward. The monitor stand 620 may include sufficient structural strength to support even the weight of a caregiver or patient. However, the monitor stand 620 is generally envisioned for use with computers, televisions, etc., for information or entertainment purposes.
[0077] refer to Figure 9 The patient support device 700 includes a guardrail assembly 704 with a support guardrail 708 operatively coupled to a support frame 712. The support guardrail 708 is operable between a stowed position and an extended position. The support frame 712 includes a head section 714, a body section 716, and a foot section 718. A monitor holder 720 is disposed near the foot section 718 and is movable between multiple positions. The monitor holder 720 is adjustable between a raised vertical position and a lower vertical position. In other words, the monitor holder 720 is configured to rotate about a vertical axis near the foot section 718 of the support frame 712. The planar extension of the monitor holder 720 is configured to remain parallel to the floor when the foot section 718 is hinged downwards, using an improved parallel arm mounted between the foot section 718 and the support frame 712.
[0078] like Figure 10 As shown, the illustrated patient support device 800 includes a support frame 804 with a guardrail assembly 808 having a support guardrail 812 pivotally connected to the support frame 804. The support guardrail 812 can be similar to... Figure 1The guardrail assembly 18 operates between a retracted position and an extended position. A wireless patient monitoring interface 816 is positioned at the middle portion of the support guardrail 812. Multiple pivot supports 820 connect the support guardrail 812 to a support frame 804. The multiple pivot supports 820 operate to move the support guardrail 812 between an extended position and a retracted position, in which the support guardrail 812 is spaced apart from the support frame 804, and in the retracted position, the support guardrail 812 is adjacent to the support frame 804. A support tray 824 is provided and is operable between a vertical position (left support guardrail 812) and a horizontal position (right support guardrail 812), in which the body 826 of the tray 824 is positioned adjacent to the pivot supports 820, and in the horizontal position, the body 826 of the tray 824 extends substantially perpendicular to the pivot supports 820. It is generally conceivable that the tray 824 can be configured to rotate approximately 270 degrees about a horizontal axis between the vertical and horizontal positions.
[0079] Now for reference Figure 11 The illustrated patient support device 900 includes a support frame 904 with a guardrail assembly 908 having at least one support guardrail 912 pivotally connected to the support frame 904 between a retracted position and an extended position. A wireless patient monitoring interface 914 is disposed at the distal end of at least one support guardrail 912. A plurality of pivot supports 916 connect the support guardrail 912 to the support frame 904. The pivot supports 916 operate to move the support guardrail 912 between an extended position and a retracted position, in which the support guardrail 912 is spaced apart from the support frame 904, and in the retracted position, the support guardrail 912 is adjacent to the support frame 904.
[0080] Refer again Figure 11 The monitor tray 920 is attached via a support arm 926 to the middle section of the support frame 904, near the foot section 924. The monitor tray 920 can rotate approximately 180 degrees to either a first or second side of the support frame 904 via the support arm 926. This provides excellent flexibility during patient transport by the caregiver and also serves as a surface for the patient when the monitor tray 920 is not in use. It is conceivable that... Figure 11 The monitor tray 920 may include a positioning release device to allow caregivers to easily remove the monitor tray 920 and support arm 926 from the middle section of the support frame 904 when not in use.
[0081] refer to Figure 12The illustrated patient support device 1000 includes a foot segment 1002, a body segment 1004, and a head segment 1006. The support frame 1010 of the patient support device 1000 includes at least one protrusion 1011 having at least one intravenous infusion (IV) bar socket 1012 at its distal end 1014 of the foot segment 1002. The IV bar socket 1012 of the at least one protrusion 1011 is configured to receive an IV bar or other components useful to the caregiver or patient. It is also contemplated that the at least one IV bar socket 1012 located in the body segment 1004 may be used to support a monitor frame or be configured to attach to other components of the patient support device 1000. It is also contemplated that the IV bar socket 1012 may be located in the head segment 1006 and may support an IV bar, bar, or monitor frame to support a monitor or other computing unit, or for attaching to any other component of the patient support device 1000. Any of the various guardrail components can be used in conjunction with the patient support device 1000, such as Figure 12 As shown.
[0082] Now for reference Figure 13 and Figure 14 The illustrated patient support device 1100 includes a support frame 1104 having a mattress 1108 defining a patient support surface 1109. The support frame 1104 includes a foot segment 1106, a body segment 1107, and a head segment 1110. The mattress 1108 includes a foot segment 1112, a body segment 1114, and a head segment 1116, which, when the mattress 1108 is positioned on the support frame 1104, correspond to the foot segment 1106, body segment 1107, and head segment 1110, respectively. The foot segment 1106 of the support frame 1104 is rotatable downward relative to the body segment 1107 of the support frame 1104. The support frame 1104 includes a connecting feature 1118 disposed near the foot segment 1106. A leg support 1120 is configured to attach to the connecting feature 1118 of the support frame 1104. The leg support 1120 extends at an upward angle relative to the patient support surface 1109 of the mattress 1108. The support frame 1104 includes a base 1124 having a first arm 1128 and a second arm 1130 extending away from the base 1124 to generally define a Y-shaped configuration. The distal ends of each of the first arm 1128 and the second arm 1130 of the Y-shaped configuration are supported by casters 1134.
[0083] Refer again Figure 13 and Figure 14Each leg support 1120 includes an elongated body 1138 pivotally coupled to a support frame 1104. The leg support 1120 is slidably coupled to and stabilized beneath the support frame 1104. The leg support 1120 is operably coupled to the support frame 1104 via a ball joint. It is generally contemplated that the foot section 1106 of the support frame 1104 can be detachably coupled to the support frame 1104. Additionally, the leg support 1120 can be configured to abut and support the patient's lower leg. Furthermore, the leg support 1120 can be configured to abut and support the patient's foot. A central portion of the support frame 1104 may include a foot support bar 1140 configured to engage with or otherwise operably coupled to the leg support 1120. During use, the caregiver slides the patient down the mattress 1108 toward the foot section 1112. The foot section 1112 of the mattress 1108 is removed, folded, or stowed, and the leg support 1120 extends from the middle portion of the support frame 1104. The patient's lower leg or foot can be placed on the leg support 1120, thereby moving the patient to the lithotomy position.
[0084] Now for reference Figure 15 and Figure 16 The illustrated patient support device 1200 includes a support frame 1202 having a leg support 1203 in the form of a stirrup 1204, which can be secured in an elevated position. The stirrup 1204 includes a calf support 1205 supporting the patient's legs. The stirrup 1204 can be coupled to a body segment 1206 or a foot segment 1208 of the support frame 1202, or to a middle portion of the support frame 1202. Furthermore, it is conceivable that the stirrup 1204 can be completely removed from the support frame 1202. A mattress 1210 is positioned on the support frame 1202 and includes a head segment 1212, a body segment 1214, and a foot segment 1216. Figure 16 As exemplified, it is conceivable that the foot section 1216 of the mattress 1210 can be removed to minimize bodily fluid exposure to the foot section 1216 of the mattress 1210. In some cases, the foot section 1208 of the support frame 1202 can be rotated downwards or can be removed relative to the support frame 1202. The stirrups 1204 are then rotated upwards to a preferred angle and locked in place by the lever 1220.
[0085] like Figure 17 and Figure 18As shown, the example configuration for the patient support device 1300 includes a support frame 1304 with a tiltable mattress 1308. The tiltable mattress 1308 defines a patient support surface 1306. The support frame 1304 includes a head section 1310, a body section 1312, and a foot section 1314. In this configuration, the patient is adjusted such that the patient's feet are close to the head section 1310 of the support frame 1304. Here, a leg support 1320 can be operatively coupled to a connecting feature 1324 disposed near the head section 1310. The patient support device 1300 may include a guardrail assembly 1328 having at least one support guardrail 1330 operatively coupled to the support frame 1304. At least one sliding guardrail 1334 can be operatively coupled to at least one support guardrail 1330. At least one support guardrail 1330 is rotatably movable between an extended position and a retracted position. At least one sliding guardrail 1334 may include one or more lateral extension bars 1338, the distal ends of which have handles 1340 for a patient or caregiver to grip. A leg support 1320 is configured for attachment to a connection feature 1324 of the head section 1310. The leg support 1320 extends at an upward angle relative to a patient support surface 1306 defined by a tiltable mattress 1308. At least one sliding guardrail 1334 is contemplated.
[0086] Now for reference Figure 19A and Figure 19BThe illustrated patient support device 1400 includes a support frame 1404 having a head section 1408, a body section 1410, and a foot section 1412. The foot section 1412 is pivotable relative to the body section 1410, and the body section 1410 of the support frame 1404 includes a connecting feature 1416. A mattress 1418 is disposed on the support frame 1404. At least one stirrup assembly 1420 is operatively coupled to the connecting feature 1416 and may include a stirrup 1422 and a support boot 1426, which are slidably and rotatably coupled to a support rod 1430 of the stirrup assembly 1420 via a connecting feature 1432. The support boot 1426 is pivotable vertically relative to the support frame 1404 via the support assembly 1434. The patient support device 1400 also includes a guardrail assembly 1440 having a support guardrail 1444 pivotally connected to the support frame 1404 between a stowed position and an extended position. A wireless patient monitoring interface 1450 may be positioned at the middle portion of the support guardrail 1444. The support boot 1426 is slidably and rotatably adjustable relative to the support rod 1430 between an unlimited number of positions. Notably, the patient support device 1400 also includes a removable mattress portion 1460 adjacent to the foot section 1412 of the support frame 1404. When one or more stirrups 1422 are in use, the foot section 1412 is configured to rotate downwards to create space. In use, it is conceivable that the stirrups 1422 of the stirrup assembly 1420 may be attached to the support frame 1404, and that the support boot 1426 may be attached to the support rod 1430. The patient then slides toward the foot section 1412 of the support frame 1404, and the patient's leg is placed in the stirrups 1422 or the support boot 1426. The foot section 1412 of the support frame 1404 is folded down, and a portion of the mattress 1418 near the foot section 1412 is removed to minimize fluid exposure.
[0087] like Figure 20 and Figure 21As shown, the illustrated patient support device 1500 includes a support frame 1504 having a head segment 1506, a body segment 1508, and a foot segment 1510. The foot segment 1510 is pivotally coupled to the support frame 1504. The patient support device 1500 also includes a guardrail assembly 1514 having at least one linear support guardrail 1518. The at least one linear support guardrail 1518 includes a foot support 1522 disposed at a first end of the at least one linear support guardrail 1518 and a wireless patient monitoring interface 1526 disposed at a second end of the at least one linear support guardrail 1518. A plurality of pivoting supports 1532 are disposed on the at least one linear support guardrail 1518 and connect the at least one linear support guardrail 1518 to the support frame 1504. Multiple pivot supports 1532 operate to move at least one linear support rail 1518 between an extended position and a retracted position. In the extended position, at least one linear support rail 1518 is spaced apart from the support frame 1504, and in the retracted position, at least one linear support rail 1518 is adjacent to the support frame 1504. It is contemplated that the multiple pivot supports 1532 may extend away from the support frame 1504 at a lateral angle between 95 and 120 degrees relative to the plane of the support frame 1504. A foot support 1522 of at least one linear support rail 1518 may be integrally formed with the at least one linear support rail 1518 as a single unit. It is anticipated that the foot support 1522 may be curved or angled to provide adequate support to the patient's foot. It is generally contemplated that each of the linear support rails 1518 may be positioned in an intermediate position between the retracted and extended positions to provide a comfortable position for the patient to place their feet. It is also conceivable that the foot section 1510 of the support frame 1504 can be hinged downwards while maintaining attachment to the patient support device 1500. Furthermore, a portion of the foot section 1510, a portion of the body section 1508, or both may include a gatch mechanism 1540, which can be vertically adjusted to elevate the patient's pelvis when the patient rests on the foot support 1522 of at least one linear support rail 1518.
[0088] Now for reference Figure 22 and Figure 23The illustrated patient support device 1600 includes a support frame 1604 having a head segment 1606, a body segment 1610, and a foot segment 1614. A Gage mechanism 1620 is positioned near at least one of the body segment 1610 and the foot segment 1614. The Gage mechanism 1620 is configured to elevate the patient's pelvis. The foot segment 1614 is capable of downward rotation of approximately 45 to 75 degrees. A foot support 1624 is operatively coupled to the foot segment 1614 and is capable of rotating relative to the foot segment 1614 between an extended position and a retracted position. When in the extended position, the foot support 1624 can extend upward relative to the foot segment 1614, and when in the retracted position, the foot support can be generally aligned with the planar extension of the foot segment 1614. The patient support device 1600 also includes a guardrail assembly 1626 having at least one support guardrail 1628 pivotally connected to the support frame 1604 and operable between a raised position and a lowered position. The foot support 1624 can be configured to adjust to multiple intermediate positions between an extended position and a retracted position. Furthermore, the foot support 1624 may include an arched engagement surface 1630 and an elongated body 1634. The foot support 1624 can be locked in any of the multiple intermediate positions. It is generally contemplated that the foot support 1624 can be locked by laterally pulling the elongated body 1634 of the foot support 1624 away from the support frame 1604, rotating the grasped elongated body 1634 of the foot support 1624 to a desired angle, and pushing the grasped foot support 1624 laterally inward toward the support frame 1604. It is also conceivable that the foot support 1624 may be laterally biased by a spring to pull the elongated body 1634 inward toward the foot segment 1614. The foot support 1624 may include a first foot support 1624 and a second foot support 1624, which are laterally biased inward toward each other. A portion of the foot segment 1614 may be vertically raised to support the patient's pelvis. This portion of the foot segment 1614 is generally adjacent to the body segment 1610. It is also conceivable that a portion of the body segment 1610 may be vertically raised to support the patient's pelvis. The wireless patient monitoring interface 1640 may be positioned at the middle portion of at least one support rail 1628 or elsewhere along at least one support rail 1628.
[0089] Now for reference Figure 24 and Figure 25The illustrated patient support device 1700 includes a support frame 1704 having a head end 1706 and a foot end 1708. A mattress 1712 is disposed on the support frame 1704 and configured to support a patient in a prone or supine position. A support rod 1716 is coupled to one of the head end 1706 and foot end 1708 of the support frame 1704 and is rotatable relative to the support frame about a pivot 1720. The support rod 1716 is operable to support an IV bag or other patient accessory and is also operable to provide a handle for moving the patient support device 1700. The support rod 1716 may be rotatably coupled to the support frame 1704. Alternatively, the support rod 1716 may be telescopically coupled to the support frame 1704.
[0090] refer to Figure 26 The illustrated patient support device 1800 includes a support frame 1804 with a push handle 1808 that can extend or retract upwards or downwards for better vertical ergonomic adjustment by the user or caregiver. A button-release member allows for independent adjustability of each push handle 1808. The telescopic nature of the push handle 1808 allows it to be set at virtually any height preferred by the caregiver. Controls 1812 are provided on the grips 1816 of each push handle 1808 to aid in moving and manipulating the patient support device 1800.
[0091] Now for reference Figure 27 and Figure 27A The illustrated patient support device 1900 includes a support frame 1904 having a head end 1906 and a foot end. A mattress 1912 is disposed on the support frame 1904 and configured to support a patient in a prone or supine position. An air canister holder arm 1916 rotates with the support frame 1904 about arrow 1918 and is operable between an extended position and a retracted position. In the extended position, the air canister holder arm 1916 can receive an air canister; in the retracted position, the air canister holder arm 1916 is disposed below a portion of the support frame 1904. Figure 27A As shown, IV rod 1920 can be stably held within receiving slot 1922 defined by support frame 1904 and is configured to be positioned on the upper support region of support frame 1904. IV rod 1920 can be inserted into hole 1924 of support arm 1928.
[0092] Now for reference Figure 28The illustrated patient support device 2000 includes a display assembly 2002 having a light source 2004 operatively coupled to a support frame 2006 and configured to emit light through a lens to define an icon 2008 onto a remote surface 2012 relative to the support frame 2006. The light source 2004 is configured to convey patient information to a caregiver. As shown, the light source 2004 is located at a wheel support 2016 at the foot end 2014 of the patient support device 2000, which is pivotally coupled to a wheel 2020. The light source 2004 can be configured to emit light with a wavelength between 550 nm and 595 nm. It is generally conceivable that when the icon 2008 is illuminated in a specific color (such as green or blue), the patient support device 2000 is plugged in or may be fully charged. When unplugged, once the stored charge of the patient support device 2000 falls below a certain threshold, the light defining the icon 2008 will illuminate with an amber light. If no action is taken, the amber light will begin flashing to warn caregivers that the patient support device 2000 needs to be plugged in. Different power states can be associated with which functions fail when a specific action is not performed. For example, loss of articulation power can be indicated by a steady amber light, loss of weighing power by a slowly flashing amber light, and loss of power for the bed exit alarm by a rapidly flashing amber light. It should be understood that any number of light colors and flashing patterns can be used to indicate any number of power or operational states.
[0093] It is also conceivable that an electronic medical record (EMR) connected timer could be provided to capture the time required to move from the triage area to the patient's room, the time from the patient's room to the meeting with the caregiver, etc. The EMR-connected timer could utilize the display component 2002 described above to display time-related information. For example, the display component 2002 could project or otherwise project time-related images onto the floor or walls of the care facility. Alternatively, timing information could be provided on one of the wireless patient monitoring interfaces described herein. Furthermore, the EMR-connected timer could also serve as a nightlight alternative, displaying the time of day or other timing sequences, such as the time until a surgical event, a doctor's visit, or a visit by another caregiver. In yet another instance, a liquid crystal display (LCD) projector could be used to provide colorful or interesting animated graphics that might be suitable for younger patients. It should be understood that the timer, such as the EMR-connected timer, could be illuminated from any light source located on one of the patient support devices 2000 described herein, including but not limited to light source 2004. Alternatively or additionally, a status indicating the selection of EMR data could also be provided. For example, the availability of laboratory orders or results can be projected or otherwise displayed by a light source mounted on the patient support unit 2000. As other examples, specific patient precautions, such as allergies or other patient information, such as when laboratory results are available or when procedures are scheduled, can be projected or projected onto the walls or floors of the care facility for caregivers to use.
[0094] It should be understood that any individual component of the patient support device assembly described above, such as the frame, side rails, or casters, can be configured to emit light of different colors to provide different or specific information to the patient or caregiver. Alternatively, light can be projected onto various parts of the patient support device to provide information to the patient or caregiver. The light source can include light-emitting diodes (LEDs) or other light-emitting devices. Color changes can be based on the safety status of various functions, such as green for safety, amber for alarm, and red for emergency. It should be understood that these color changes are merely illustrative, and any color can be assigned to any status. As an example, if the side rails are in the extended position, the light source can project a green color onto the side rails. In other instances, if the casters are not locked, light can be emitted from the light source onto the casters to indicate that the casters are not in a safe position. In yet another instance, if the mattress of the patient support device is not moved to a lower position, the base frame can be illuminated in amber. Of course, any or all components of the patient support device can have a light source disposed therein that emits light rather than projecting light onto the respective component.
[0095] Now for reference Figure 29The illustrated patient support device 2100 includes a one-touch cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) button 2104 present on a wireless patient monitoring interface 2108. The graphical user interface 2112 of the wireless patient monitoring interface 2108 may include the one-touch CPR button 2104. The one-touch CPR button 2104 may be present if the patient support device 2100 includes a powered articulation feature. In this case, CPR actions can be performed when the caregiver selects the one-touch CPR button 2104. This configuration is generally envisioned to act quickly, thereby increasing the likelihood of a positive outcome during a cardiopulmonary event.
[0096] Now for reference Figure 30 The diagram illustrates a Day Surgery Center (ASC) workflow system 2200. In this setup, the patient is placed on a patient support device 2202 and prepared for the surgical procedure in step 2204. The patient's vital signs are monitored by a contactless continuous monitoring (CFCM) sensor 2210, which has controls on a wireless patient monitoring interface 2220 on the bed rail assembly of the patient support device 2202. During the surgical procedure (step 2224), progress is tracked and displayed on a status panel 2230. The status panel 2230 can be viewed by caregivers, facility staff, family members, or all or any combination of these individuals to view the progress of the surgical procedure and the patient's vital signs at any given time. Once postoperatively (step 2234), the patient can be repositioned and monitored during recovery on the patient support device 2202. The patient's status, including vital signs, can be displayed on the wireless patient monitoring interface 2220.
[0097] Now for reference Figure 31 and Figure 32The illustrated patient support device 2300 includes a smart position-sensing caster assembly 2304, which includes at least one caster 2306. The caster 2306 includes an axle 2308 with an axle sensor 2310. A stem sensor 2312 is located at the caster stem or kingpin 2315, near the caster 2306. The axle sensor 2310 measures the precise distance traveled, while the stem sensor 2312 measures the angle at which the caster 2306 is positioned relative to the support frame 2313 of the patient support device 2300. When the power interface of the patient support device 2300 is plugged into a power supply 2314 fixed to the wall 2316 to charge the battery of the patient support device 2300, the position of the patient support device 2300 is identified by the controller, and the position of the caster 2306 is zeroed by the controller's processor relative to that position. This allows for periodic recalibration of the position of the patient support device 2300. In use, the intelligent position-sensing caster assembly 2304 can be matched with the digital layout of the unit plan 2320 to determine a precise position. In other words, zero-position calibration can occur when the patient support device 2300 is charging from the power source 2314. As the patient support device 2300 moves through a portion of the unit plan 2320, the axle and vertical axis sensors 2310, 2312 locate the distance traveled and the angle of the caster 2306 during travel to the final position 2330. The final position 2330 is calculated using the axle and vertical axis sensors 2310, 2312 based on the distance, angle, and zero point, and then superimposed onto the digital layout of the unit plan 2320. Therefore, the system does not require positioning sensors within the hospital infrastructure. By measuring the rotation of the caster 2306 (which is equivalent to the distance traveled) and the angle of the caster 2306 relative to the support frame 2313, the approximate precise position of the patient support device 2300 can be determined.
[0098] Now for reference Figure 34 and Figure 35 An example of a patient support device 2400 with a support frame 2402 is provided. The support frame 2402 includes a release grip 2404 for the illustrated head-down, foot-up assembly. The head-down, foot-up release grip 2404 may include a release handle 2408 on either side of the patient support device 2400. The release handle 2408 allows a caregiver to operate the head-down, foot-up release device for patients of all weights and sizes using one hand at the head end 2412 of the patient support device 2400 or at the side of the patient support device 2400. One-handed operation is particularly advantageous for larger or heavier patients. In other words, it will be understood that the release handle 2408 can be a one-handed release device. Figure 35As shown, a head-down, feet-up release grip 2404 extends through a section of the support frame 2402. The head-down, feet-up release grip 2404 is positioned at the head end 2412 of the patient support device 2400, near the release handle 2408. The release handle 2408 is adjacent to the release grip 2404 and can be depressed to influence movement in the head-down, feet-up position. The release handle 2408 can be spring-loaded to a locked or static position, requiring the caregiver to apply pressure against the spring bias to release the release handle 2408.
