[0001] This application claims priority to European patent application No. 24156141.4, filed on February 6, 2024, entitled "Colorant for Siliconization of Syringes", the disclosure of which is incorporated herein by reference in its entirety.
[0002] Background of the Invention Field of the Invention The present invention generally relates to a coloring oil comprising a combination of at least one oil (e.g., one or more silicone oils and / or one or more hydrocarbon oils) and at least one coloring compound selected from one or more fluorescent compositions (e.g., one or more acrylic fluorescent compositions and / or one or more ultraviolet dyes). In one embodiment, the present invention relates to a coloring oil comprising a combination of at least one oil and at least one coloring compound, wherein the oil is selected from one or more silicone oils, one or more hydrocarbon oils, or any two or more of them, wherein the viscosity of the at least one oil is in the range of about 500 centipoise to about 1500 centipoise, and the coloring compound is selected from one or more fluorescent acrylic compositions, one or more ultraviolet dyes, or any two or more of them, wherein the at least one coloring compound fluoresces at a wavelength of about 100 nm to about 400 nm.
[0003] Description of related technologies Some devices require slow and controlled initiation and maintenance of sliding movement between two surfaces. It is well known that two stationary surfaces in a sliding relationship typically exhibit sufficient resistance to the initiation of movement so that gradually increasing forces applied to one surface do not induce movement until a threshold force is reached, at which point the surfaces undergo a sudden sliding or shear separation. This sudden separation of stationary surfaces into a sliding relationship is referred to herein as “breakout” or “breakloose”.
[0004] "Breakout force" refers to the force required to overcome the static friction between the surfaces of a syringe assembly that was previously moving in a sliding relationship but has remained stationary ("parked") for a short period of time (e.g., milliseconds to hours). A less well-known but important frictional force is "breakloose force," which refers to the force required to overcome the static friction between the surfaces of a syringe assembly that was not previously moving in a sliding relationship or has been stationary for a longer period of time, typically due to chemical or material bonding or surface deformation caused by aging, sterilization, temperature cycling, or other treatments.
[0005] In liquid dispensing devices (e.g., syringes) used to deliver small, precisely metered amounts of liquid via a linear advance that smoothly increases from one surface to the second, the starting and releasing forces are particularly cumbersome. This problem also arises in devices using stopcock valves (e.g., burettes, pipettes, feeding funnels, etc.), where careful drop-by-drop flow control is required.
[0006] Problems of excessive starting and releasing forces are related to friction. Friction is generally defined as the resistance that arises when the surface of one material slides or tends to slide on its own or on an adjacent surface of another material. Between contacting solid surfaces, there may be two types of friction: (1) the resistance to the force required to initiate movement from one surface to another, usually called static friction; and (2) the resistance to the force required to move from one surface to another at a variable, fixed, or predetermined speed, usually called kinetic friction.
[0007] The forces required to overcome static friction and to initiate or loosen the motion are respectively called "starting force" or "loosening force," and the force required to maintain stable sliding of one surface on another after initiation or loosening is called "holding force." Static friction is generated by two main factors: viscosity and inertia, which in turn generate starting or loosening forces. The terms "adhesion" or "viscosity" as used herein refer to the tendency of two statically contacting surfaces to develop a degree of mutual adhesion. The term "inertia" is generally defined as the maladaptive tendency to motion that must be overcome to make an object move. In the context of this invention, inertia is understood to refer to the component of the starting or loosening force that does not involve adhesion.
[0008] The initiation or release force, and especially the degree of adhesion, varies depending on the surface composition. Generally, elastic materials exhibit greater adhesion than inelastic materials. The length of time that surfaces remain in contact with each other also affects the initiation and / or release force. In the syringe industry, the term "dwell time" refers to the storage time, retention time, or interval between filling and dispensing. Dwell time typically increases the initiation or release force, especially if the syringe is refrigerated or heated during the dwell time.
[0009] A common method to overcome starting or loosening is to apply a lubricant to the surface-to-surface interface. Commonly used lubricants are hydrocarbon oils, such as mineral oil, peanut oil, and vegetable oil. A disadvantage of these products is their solubility in various fluids, making them suitable for applications such as drug carriers. Furthermore, these lubricants are susceptible to oxidation by air, leading to changes in viscosity and undesirable color. They are also particularly prone to migrating from the surface to the surface interface. This lubricant migration is often attributed to the increase in starting or loosening force over time during parking.
[0010] Given the above, silicone oil is typically applied to syringes to achieve the aforementioned benefits. The silicone coating can be deposited on the inner wall of the syringe barrel by spraying, dipping, or other suitable application techniques. After application, the silicone coating is usually treated to prevent interaction with the components of the drug or agent contained within the syringe barrel. For example, for silicone coatings containing poly(dimethylsiloxane) emulsions, the coating is typically annealed to form a so-called "baked silicone," making the coating less reactive with the drug / agent contained in the syringe barrel.
[0011] While silicone oils and various hydrocarbon oils provide adequate lubrication within syringes, it should be recognized that these oils may not be well detected under various conditions. For example, silicone oils may not be well detected when low layer thicknesses are present (such as in the case of baked silicone), which can make it difficult to determine the uniformity of the layer and the presence of any pores in the silicone or hydrocarbon oil coating applied to / to the glass syringe barrel (e.g., a Neopak barrel). As another example, silicone oils may not be well detected when rapid detection of silicone or hydrocarbon oils in a syringe barrel (with 4, 5, 6, 7, or even 8 measurement lines along the syringe diameter) is desired. Yet another example: when using conventional silicone oils, detecting X-Si particles in solution relative to other types of particles can be difficult during drug-syringe interaction studies. Finally, silicone oils may not be well detected at the glass-stop interface.
[0012] Therefore, there is a need for an improved oil for medical devices, including but not limited to syringes, that allows for better testing, property determination, and / or quality control based on improved contrast using one or more coloring compounds detailed herein. In another case, there is a need for improved detection / observation of silicone or hydrocarbon oils to enable faster analysis and understanding of their behavior in syringes, medical device stops, AGF testing, etc. Summary of the Invention

[0044] First, an exemplary syringe will be described, wherein at least a portion of the syringe (e.g., the syringe barrel) is made of a suitable glass or plastic material associated with the coloring oil of the present invention. However, it should be noted that the coloring oil of the present invention is not limited to the one or more syringe embodiments described below, but can be broadly applied to any syringe or other medical device requiring one or more visual tests to determine the behavior of one or more materials in and / or on the syringe stop to produce better visual observation results.
[0045] refer to Figures 1 to 3 The diagram illustrates a non-limiting embodiment of syringe 10, which can be used to implement various aspects or embodiments of the present disclosure. According to some aspects of the present disclosure, syringe 10 can be configured as a pre-filled syringe, which provides the convenience of rapidly delivering the liquid therein to a patient without first aspirating the medication from another container and measuring its volume.
[0046] like Figure 1 and Figure 2As shown, syringe 10 typically includes a syringe barrel 12 and a plunger assembly 14. For example, the plunger assembly 14 can be moved along a longitudinal axis within the syringe barrel 12 to a forward position to facilitate the administration of an injectable fluid (e.g., a medication) to a patient. The syringe barrel 12 is formed of a suitable glass or plastic material and includes a generally cylindrical outer wall 16 and an end member 18, which together define a chamber 20 for retaining fluid therein. The syringe barrel 12 includes an open proximal end 22 and a distal end 24, the open proximal end 22 being configured to receive the plunger assembly 14 therein, and the end member 18 being located at the distal end 24. The proximal end 22 of the syringe barrel 12 may include a flange 26 to facilitate manipulation and positioning of the syringe 10 and to maintain the relative position of the syringe barrel 12 with respect to the plunger assembly 14 during medication administration. At the distal end 24, the end member 18 may include a hub 30 that narrows relative to the cylindrical outer wall 16 and extends distally from the cylindrical outer wall. The hub portion 30 is formed as a partially hollow member that defines a passage through which it is in fluid communication with the chamber 20. The needle 34 is attached to the hub portion 30 within the passage, for example by gluing or otherwise securing it to the hub portion 30. According to some aspects of this disclosure, the syringe 10 may also include a cap 35 that is coupled to the hub portion 30 of the syringe barrel 12 to protect the needle 34.
[0047] The plunger assembly 14 of the syringe 10 is formed by an elongated plunger rod 36 (hereinafter more generally referred to as "plunger 36") and a plunger head or stop 38. The plunger 36 may include a body 40 extending between a proximal plunger end 42 and a distal plunger end 44. A thumb press 46 is positioned at the proximal plunger end 42, which can be engaged by a user's thumb (or other finger) to apply a distal force to the plunger assembly 14, thereby moving the plunger 36 relative to the syringe barrel 12. The distal plunger end 44 is configured to mate with the stop 38. In other embodiments, the distal plunger end 44 may be a threaded end that mates with the stop 38.
[0048] The stop 38 of the plunger assembly 14 is positioned at the distal end 44 of the plunger so that it can move with the plunger 36 within the chamber 20 of the syringe barrel 12. That is, when a distal force is applied to the plunger rod 36 (e.g., to the thumb press portion 46), both the plunger rod 36 and the stop 38 are caused to move distally through the syringe barrel 12, wherein the stop 38 is configured to maintain a seal with the inner surface of the syringe barrel 12 as it moves through the syringe barrel 12.
[0049] Now for reference Figures 4 to 9 And continue to refer to Figures 1 to 3According to a non-limiting aspect or embodiment of this disclosure, the structure of various stops 38 that may be included in the syringe 10 is shown in more detail. Each stop 38 is defined by a body 52 including a proximal end 54 and a distal end 56. The proximal end 54 may be configured as an open proximal end engaging the distal end of a plunger 36, while the distal end 56 is configured as a closed distal end engaging the barrel 12 of the syringe 10. The closed distal end 56 of the body 52 includes a generally cylindrical portion 58 and a top 60 extending distally from the cylindrical portion 58. In some embodiments, the top 60 is configured as a conical portion ( Figure 4 , Figure 7 and Figure 9 The conical portion extends distally from the cylindrical portion 58 to the end to provide a closed distal end 56. In other embodiments, as another non-limiting example, the top 60 is formed as a flat surface. Figure 6 and Figure 8 ) or dome surface ( Figure 5 ).
[0050] As is known in the art, the body 52 of the stop 38 is partially hollow and is sized and configured to receive the distal end 44 of the plunger 36 therein. The body 52 of the stop 38 defines an inner cavity (not shown), which in some embodiments may include a threaded inner surface configured to receive and engage with the threaded distal end 44 of the plunger 36. In other embodiments, the cavity may define an inner contoured surface having a recess therein configured to receive a flanged extension of the plunger 36.
[0051] The outer surface 68 of the cylindrical portion 58 of the body 52 includes one or more ribs located thereon, which extend circumferentially around the entire outer surface 68 of the cylindrical portion 58. In each of these illustrated embodiments, the stop 38 includes a plurality of ribs 70; however, it should be appreciated that other embodiments may include only a single rib 70. The ribs 70 may be integrally formed with the body 52, for example, by a molding process. The plurality of ribs 70 may include two ribs 70, wherein a first or distal rib is positioned toward the distal end 56 of the body 52 and a second or proximal rib is positioned toward the proximal end 54 of the body 52, or more ribs may include three or more ribs 70 spaced apart along the cylindrical portion 58, wherein an interrib region 72 is provided between each pair of adjacent ribs. The interrib region 74 of the cylindrical portion 58 may have a generally flat outer surface 68 or a curved outer surface 68.
[0052] The stop 38 may be made of a material different from that of the plunger 36 and capable of forming a tight seal with the syringe barrel 12 as the stop passes through it. [0058] Suitable high Mooney viscosity rubbers include, but are not limited to, one or more polybutadiene rubbers, one or more polyisobutylene rubbers, one or more polyisoprene rubbers, natural rubber, one or more ethylene propylene rubbers, one or more ethylene propylene rubbers, one or more styrene-butadiene rubbers, or blends of any two or more thereof.
[0059] In one embodiment, the stop 38 is made of a polymeric material, which has a significantly lower coefficient of friction and contact area / pressure compared to conventional rubber stops. Therefore, in this embodiment, the stop 38 can be used with the syringe 10 without silicone oil or other lubricants. Furthermore, the syringe barrel 12 can be made of the same, similar, or even completely different material as the material used to form the stop 38.
[0060] In one embodiment, a suitable seal is achieved by contact pressure through any one or more stops, depending on the syringe that can be used in conjunction with the invention, because the polymeric material is used to form the stop (or any disclosed alternative stop design incorporated herein by reference), wherein the stop is formed of any one or more polymeric materials having one or more of the properties disclosed herein. That is, suitable sealing performance of the stop for any syringe that can be used in conjunction with the invention is achieved by one or more of the following: the geometry of the stop, the Young's modulus of the polymeric material used to form such a stop, the indentation modulus of the laminate sealing surface, and / or the roughness of the stop surface and / or the inner surface of the cylinder (or other container) to which the stop is designed to seal.
[0061] In one embodiment, the surface roughness of the glass, polymer, metal, or other type of material forming the surface sealed by the stop of any syringe that can be used in conjunction with the present invention (e.g., a vial, syringe, or other type of container) is independently within the following ranges: about 0.0001 micrometers to about 6 micrometers, or about 0.0002 micrometers to about 5.9 micrometers, or about 0.0003 micrometers to about 5.8 micrometers, or about 0.0004 micrometers to about 5.7 micrometers, or about 0.0005 micrometers to about 5.6 micrometers, or about 0.0006 micrometers to about 5.5 micrometers, or about 0.0007 micrometers to about 5.4 micrometers, or about 0.0008 micrometers to about 5.3 micrometers, or about 0.0009 micrometers to about 5.2 micrometers, or about 0.001 micrometers to about 5.1 micrometers, about 0.0011 micrometers to about 5 micrometers, or about 0.0012 micrometers to about 4.9 micrometers, or about 0.0013 micrometers to about 4.8 micrometers, or about 0.0014 micrometers to about 4.7 micrometers, or about 0.0015 micrometers to about 4.6 micrometers, or about 0.0016 micrometers to about 4.5 micrometers, or about 0.0017 micrometers to about 4.4 micrometers, or about 0.0018 micrometers to about 4.3 micrometers, or about 0.0019 micrometers to about 4.2 micrometers, about 0.002 micrometers to about 4.1 micrometers, or about 0.0021 micrometers to about 4 micrometers, or about 0.0022 micrometers to about 3.9 micrometers, or about 0.0023 micrometers to about 3.8 micrometers, or about 0.0024 micrometers to about 4.5 micrometers, or about 0.0024 micrometers to about 4 ... [0066] In one embodiment, according to any syringe that can be used in conjunction with the invention, the contact pressure generated by the stop formed of the polymeric material at the sealing surface (glass, polymer, metal, or other type of material forming the surface to be sealed), measured over a width of about 0.01 mm, is greater than about 90% of the indentation modulus or yield strength of the corresponding polymeric material film used to form such a stop. It is well known that the indentation modulus describes the elastic surface behavior of a material (in this case, a polymeric material) during indentation.
