Cross-references to related applications
[0001] This application claims priority to European patent application No. 24305171.1, filed on January 31, 2024, entitled "Needle Cover for Medical Injection Device", the disclosure of which is incorporated herein by reference in its entirety.
[0002] Background of the Invention Field of the Invention This disclosure generally relates to medical injection devices for delivering fluid or liquid medications. More specifically, this disclosure relates to a needle cap adapted to be mounted on a tip of a medical injection device for covering a needle attached to that tip. This disclosure also relates to a medical assembly comprising a medical injection device and a needle cap for enclosing a needle of the medical injection device.
[0003] Description of related technologies Medical injection devices (e.g., syringes) are well known in the art. These devices typically include a container for containing a medical composition (e.g., a liquid drug). The container typically includes an end piece in the form of a longitudinal tip that defines a fluid path through which the medical solution is dispensed. A needle may be attached to the end piece to puncture the patient's skin and administer the injection of the medical composition.
[0004] To maintain sterility before use and reduce the risk of accidental needlestick injuries, it is important to protect the needle. Therefore, a needle cap can be installed at the end of the syringe barrel to enclose the needle. This makes the needle physically inaccessible to people around the device. The needle cap can include an inner cover of a material with elastic properties and can also include an outer cover of rigid plastic surrounding the inner cover. In some examples, the inner needle cover can be made of rubber. The inner needle cover ensures the seal of the medical injection device. To this end, the inner needle cover includes a sealing portion that seals against the outer surface of the syringe tip to provide a tight seal. The inner needle cover prevents the drug composition from being contaminated by the external environment, thereby ensuring the integrity of the container closure. The inner needle cover also prevents any leakage of the composition from the needle outlet to the external environment. For this purpose, it is preferable to insert the needle into the inner needle cover. The rigid outer cover can be made of a rigid or semi-rigid material surrounding the inner needle cover.
[0005] The inner needle cap creates an interference force with the tip of the medical injection device to ensure a complete seal of the liquid within the device. In some examples, the integrity of the seal of the opening of the medical injection device is achieved through radial compression of the inner needle cap at the tip. Using a rigid outer needle cap below the tip increases the radial compression at the tip to prevent any unintentional displacement of the needle cap from the device. Many of these characteristics of the needle cap also affect the magnitude of the force required to remove it from the medical injection device.
[0006] When designing a needle cap, several characteristics that affect its performance level must be considered. Specifically, these characteristics include the container closure integrity at the tip of the medical injection device, the unintentional displacement of the needle cap from the medical injection device, and the ability to pull the needle cap out of the medical injection device using a reasonable amount of force. These characteristics of the needle cap typically define three distinct properties, which often makes it difficult to adjust the performance level of a single characteristic without affecting the performance levels of the other characteristics. Summary of the Invention
[0007] In view of the problems identified above, there is a need for a needle cap that improves the container closure integrity at the tip of a medical injection device, reduces the possibility of the needle cap being unintentionally displaced from the medical injection device, and reduces the force required to remove the needle cap from the medical injection device.
[0008] According to a non-limiting embodiment or aspect, a needle cap for protecting a needle mounted on an end of a medical injection device, wherein the end extends distally from the medical injection device, the needle cap may include: an inner cover extending along a longitudinal axis; and an outer cover at least partially surrounding the inner cover and operatively connected to the inner cover. The outer cover may further include an extension strip disposed on a proximal portion of the outer cover and extending distally to a position held between the inner cover and the end.
[0009] According to a non-limiting embodiment or aspect, when the outer cover covers the needle, the extension band may contact the inner surface of the inner cover. When the outer cover covers the needle, the extension band may not contact the end or the inner cover. The extension band may be made of the same material as the outer cover. The extension band may be made of a rigid plastic material. The extension band may be integrally formed with the outer cover. The outer cover may define at least one opening through which a proximal portion of the inner cover extends when the needle cap covers the needle. As the outer cover is pulled or pushed in the distal direction, the proximal portion of the outer cover may contact a proximal portion of the inner cover held in at least one opening of the outer cover, thereby moving the inner cover also in the distal direction. As the inner cover moves in the distal direction, the extension band of the outer cover may interleave between the end and the inner cover to peel or separate the inner cover from the end. The longitudinal length of the at least one opening may be the same as or substantially similar to the longitudinal length of the extension band of the outer cover.
[0010] According to a non-limiting embodiment or aspect, a medical injection device may include: a barrel extending from a proximal side to a distal side, wherein a tip is provided on the distal side of the barrel; and a needle cap for protecting a needle mounted on the tip of the medical injection device. The needle cap may include: an inner cover extending along a longitudinal axis; and an outer cover at least partially surrounding the inner cover and operatively connected to the inner cover. The outer cover may include an extending band disposed on a proximal portion of the outer cover and extending distally to a position held between the inner cover and the tip.
[0011] According to a non-limiting embodiment or aspect, when the outer cover covers the needle, the extension band may contact the inner surface of the inner cover. As the outer cover is pulled or pushed in the distal direction, the proximal portion of the outer cover may contact a proximal portion of the inner cover held in at least one opening of the outer cover, causing the inner cover to also move in the distal direction. As the inner cover moves in the distal direction, the extension band of the outer cover may be interlocked between the end and the inner cover to peel or separate the inner cover from the end. The longitudinal length of the at least one opening may be the same as or substantially similar to the longitudinal length of the extension band of the outer cover. The inner cover can be made of soft materials, including elastomers or thermoplastic elastomers.

Detailed Implementation
[0034] The following description is provided to enable those skilled in the art to make and use the described embodiments intended for carrying out the invention. However, various modifications, equivalents, variations, and substitutions will still be apparent to those skilled in the art. Any and all such modifications, variations, equivalents, and substitutions are intended to fall within the spirit and scope of the invention.
[0035] In the following text, for descriptive purposes, the terms “upper,” “lower,” “right,” “left,” “vertical,” “horizontal,” “top,” “bottom,” “lateral,” “longitudinal,” and their derivatives shall be used in connection with the present invention as oriented as shown in the accompanying drawings. However, it should be understood that the invention may employ various alternative variations unless explicitly stated otherwise. It should also be understood that the specific devices shown in the accompanying drawings and described in the following specification are merely exemplary embodiments of the invention. Therefore, the specific dimensions and other physical characteristics associated with the embodiments disclosed herein should not be considered limiting.
[0036] In the following discussion, "distal" refers to the direction generally toward the end of the medical injection device suitable for contact with the patient's skin, and "proximal" refers to the direction opposite to the distal, that is, the direction away from that end of the medical injection device. In other words, "distal direction" should be understood as indicating the direction of injection. The distal direction corresponds to the direction of travel of the plunger during injection, from which the drug composition initially contained in the cartridge is expelled. "Proximal direction" should be understood as indicating the direction opposite to the injection direction. For the purposes of this disclosure, the foregoing is used in the description of the components of the medical injection device according to this disclosure.
[0037] refer to Figures 1 to 3 The medical injection device 10 may include a cylinder 12 extending along a longitudinal axis X from a proximal side 14 to a distal side 16, the cylinder defining a reservoir 18 for a pharmaceutical composition (e.g., a liquid drug). The medical injection device 10 may also include a stop (not shown) and a plunger rod (not shown) that is translatably movable within the cylinder 12 from a proximal position to a distal position to inject the composition.
[0038] The medical injection device 10 also includes a distal end 20 extending along a longitudinal axis X from the distal side 16 of the barrel 12. The distal end 20 may be at least partially hollow to form a fluid path in fluid communication with the barrel 12. A needle 22 may be attached to the distal end 20 of the medical injection device 10 and may be in fluid communication with the fluid path. It should be noted herein that the distal side 16 of the barrel 12 is located near the shoulder of the medical injection device 10.
[0039] Preferably, the medical injection device 10 is made of glass; more preferably, the medical injection device is a glass syringe. Such glass syringes are primarily used in hospital environments and are easily sterilized. In other examples of this disclosure, the medical injection device 10 may be made of medical-grade plastic. Preferably, the medical injection device 10 is a pre-filled syringe or a pre-charged syringe. More preferably, the medical injection device 10 is a syringe with a needle 22.
[0040] Continue to refer to Figures 1 to 3The medical injection device 10 may also include a needle cap 200. The needle cap 200 may conceal and cover the needle 22. The needle cap 200 may include an outer cover 202 and an inner cover 204 that covers the needle 22. In one embodiment, the outer cover 202 covers at least a portion of the inner cover 204. In another embodiment, the outer cover 202 covers the entire inner cover 204.
[0041] refer to Figure 2 and Figure 3 The outer cover 202 according to an example of this disclosure is described in more detail. Preferably, the outer cover 202 is made of a rigid material (e.g., rigid plastic). The outer cover 202 may be made of medical-grade plastic. The rigid material gives the outer cover 202 rigidity, which allows the outer cover 202 to better protect the needle cap 200 from impact. This improves the structural integrity of the needle cap 200.
[0042] The outer cover 202 includes a body 206 having a proximal end 208 and a distal end 210. The body 206 extends along the longitudinal axis Y. When the needle cap 200 is mounted on the end 20 of the medical injection device 10, the longitudinal axis Y coincides with the longitudinal axis X.
[0043] In one example, the body 206 may be generally cylindrical in shape. The body 206 may define an inner cavity 212 that at least partially receives the inner sheath 204 of the needle cap 200. In one embodiment, the distal end 210 of the outer sheath 202 may include at least one opening for providing sterilization to the needle cap 200.
[0044] Continue to refer to Figure 2 and Figure 3 The present disclosure describes an example of an inner cover 204. The inner cover 204 may extend along a longitudinal axis Z. When the inner cover 204 is at least partially enclosed within an outer cover 202, the longitudinal axis Z may coincide with the longitudinal axis Y. Preferably, the inner cover 204 has a cylindrical shape and a circular cross-section.
[0045] Preferably, the inner cover 204 is made of a material with elastic properties. The inner cover 204 may be made of a soft material including an elastomer or thermoplastic elastomer. In this way, when the inner cover 204 is attached to the medical injection device 10, at least a portion of the inner cover 204 can deform slightly to match the shape of the tip 20. Simultaneously, the distal portion of the needle tip 20 or needle 22 can penetrate the inner cover 204. This further reduces the risk of the drug composition leaking into the external environment via the needle 22. Preferably, the material with elastic properties is a thermoplastic elastomer, elastomer, or rubber. Preferably, the material with elastic properties is sterilizable.
[0046] In one embodiment, the outer cover 202 at least partially surrounds the inner cover 204. The outer cover 202 is secured to the inner cover 204. The inner cover 204 and the outer cover 202 can be secured together by a snap-fit connection or a friction fit, or other connection methods. When the needle cap 200 is mounted on the medical injection device 10, the inner cover 204 encloses at least a portion of the end 20 of the barrel 12. Thus, the needle cap 200 is tightly and sealingly connected to the end 20. In one embodiment, the inner cover 204 forms a sufficiently tight seal with the end 20 of the medical injection device 10 to ensure a sterile and fluid tight seal between the end 20 of the medical injection device 10 and the inner cover 204.
[0047] To mount the needle cap 200 onto the medical injection device 10, the outer cover 202 is first placed on the inner cover 204, and then the entire needle cap 200 is mounted onto the medical injection device 10. After the needle cap 200 is positioned on the medical injection device 10, the needle cap 200 can be moved distally to remove the needle cap from the medical injection device 10. As the user applies a pulling force to the outer cover 202, the outer cover 202 moves distally together with the inner cover 204. As the outer cover 202 moves distally, the proximal end 208 of the outer cover 202 will begin to contact and abut against the proximal portion 220 of the inner cover 204. Once the proximal end 208 of the outer cover 202 contacts the proximal portion 220 of the inner cover 204, the proximal end 208 begins to push the proximal portion 220 distally. As the proximal portion 220 is pushed distally, the inner cover 204 is pulled radially away from the medical injection device 10.
[0048] Continue to refer to Figure 4 and Figure 5 The inner cover 204 includes a proximal portion 220 that receives the tip 20 of the medical injection device 10. The inner cover 204 forms a seal with the tip 20 of the medical injection device 10. The proximal portion 220 of the inner cover 204 extends radially outward through an opening 222 defined in the outer cover 202. Therefore, as the user pulls or pushes the outer cover 202 in a distal direction, the proximal end 208 of the outer cover 202 abuts against the proximal portion 220 of the inner cover 204, forcing the inner cover 204 to also move in a distal direction.
[0049] According to a non-limiting embodiment or aspect of this disclosure, the outer cover 202 of the needle cap 200 may further include an extension band 240 disposed on or near the proximal end 208 of the outer cover 202. The extension band 240 may be formed of the same material as the outer cover 202 (e.g., a rigid plastic material). The extension band 240 may be integrally formed with the outer cover 202. The extension band 240 extends distally from the proximal end 208 of the outer cover 202 to a location where it is positioned between the tip 20 of the medical injection device 10 and the proximal portion 220 of the inner cover 204. In one example, the extension band 240 contacts the inner surface of the proximal portion 220 of the inner cover 204 but does not contact the tip 20 of the medical injection device 200. The extension band 240 is provided to avoid a non-functional contact area between the rubber or elastic inner cover 204 and the glass tip 20 of the medical injection device 10. Instead, the extension band 240 forms a contact area between the rigid outer casing 202 and the glass end 20 of the medical injection device 10. By forming a contact area between the rigid plastic material of the extension band 240 of the outer casing 202 and the glass end 20 of the medical injection device 10, rather than between the rubber or elastic material of the inner casing 204 and the glass end 20 of the medical injection device 10, the pull-out force required to remove the inner casing 204 from the end 20 of the medical injection device 10 is reduced due to the deformation of the inner casing 204 during removal from the end 20 of the medical injection device 10. Figure 6 and Figure 7 The images depict the positions where the inner cover 204 is held on the end 20 of the medical injection device 20 and the positions where the inner cover 204 has been removed from the end 20 of the medical injection device 20. In one non-limiting embodiment or aspect of this disclosure, the longitudinal length of the extension band 240 is equal to or substantially equal to the longitudinal length of the opening 222 defined in the outer cover 202.
[0050] refer to Figure 8 and Figure 9 According to another non-limiting embodiment or aspect of this disclosure, a needle cap 300 is shown and illustrated. The needle cap 300 is assembled and operated in a manner similar to the needle cap 200 described above, but the extension band 340 of the outer cover 302 differs somewhat. In this non-limiting embodiment or aspect, the inner cover 304 includes a proximal portion 320 that receives the end 20 of the medical injection device 10. The inner cover 304 forms a seal with the end 20 of the medical injection device 10. The proximal portion 320 of the inner cover 304 extends radially outward through an opening 322 defined in the outer cover 302. Therefore, as the outer cover 302 is pulled or pushed by the user in a distal direction, the proximal end 308 of the outer cover 302 abuts the proximal portion 320 of the inner cover 304, forcing the inner cover 304 to also move in a distal direction.
[0051] According to a non-limiting embodiment or aspect of the invention, the outer cover 302 of the needle cap 300 may further include an extension band 340 disposed on or near the proximal end 308 of the outer cover 302. The extension band 340 may be formed of the same material as the outer cover 302 (e.g., a rigid plastic material). The extension band 340 may be integrally formed with the outer cover 302. The extension band 340 extends distally from the proximal end 308 of the outer cover 302 to a location where it is positioned between the end 20 of the medical injection device 10 and the proximal portion 320 of the inner cover 304. In this example, when the outer cover 302 and the inner cover 304 are held in a covered position on the end 20, the extension band 340 does not contact the inner surface of the proximal portion 320 of the inner cover 304, nor does it contact the end 20 of the medical injection device 10 (see [link to relevant documentation]). Figure 10 The extension band 340 is provided to avoid a non-functional contact area between the rubber or elastic inner cover 304 and the glass end 20 of the medical injection device 10 when the inner cover 304 is pulled or pushed distally by the outer cover 302. Instead, the extension band 340 forms a contact area between the rigid outer cover 302 and the glass end 20 of the medical injection device 10. By forming a contact area between the rigid plastic material of the extension band 340 of the outer cover 302 and the glass end 20 of the medical injection device 10, the pull-out force required to remove the inner cover 304 from the end 20 of the medical injection device 10 is reduced by deforming the inner cover 304 during removal from the end 20 of the medical injection device 10. The extension band 340 can be inserted between the inner cover 304 and the end 20 when the outer cover 302 is pulled or pushed from the end 20 of the medical injection device 10 to peel or separate the inner cover 304 from the end 20 of the medical injection device 10.
[0052] Figures 10 to 12 The images depict the following positions: the inner cover 304 held on the end 20 of the medical injection device 10; the middle position where the extension band 340 removes the contact area between the inner cover 304 and the end 20 of the medical injection device 10; and the position where the inner cover 304 has been removed from the end 20 of the medical injection device 10. In this example of the present disclosure, when the inner cover 304 covers the needle, the extension band 340 does not eliminate the contact area between the inner cover 304 and the end 20 of the medical injection device 10; however, instead, when the inner cover 304 is removed from the end 20 by the outer cover 302, the extension band 340 eliminates the contact area between the inner cover 304 and the end 20 of the medical injection device 10.
[0053] Although this disclosure has been described as having an exemplary design, it may be further modified within the spirit and scope of this disclosure. Therefore, this application is intended to cover any variations, uses, or adaptations of this disclosure using its general principles. Furthermore, this application is intended to cover such deviations from this disclosure that are within the known or customary practices in the field to which this disclosure pertains and fall within the limitations of the appended claims.
