Description

[0001] The invention relates to a steering column assembly for a motor vehicle according to the preamble of claim 1 and to a steering system with such a steering column assembly.

[0002] Such a steering column assembly and such a steering system are known from US 2 769 351 A.

[0003] The steering systems used in motor vehicles usually comprise a steering column assembly in which the steering wheel is coupled to at least one steering column, via which a steering torque or a steering angle applied by the driver is transmitted.

[0004] In so-called steer-by-wire steering systems, the steering torque or steering angle applied by the driver is recorded by sensors that transmit the corresponding data to a control module, which controls the vehicle's wheels accordingly to execute the desired steering command. Steer-by-wire steering systems typically feature a force feedback actuator connected to the steering column to simulate the forces acting on the steering wheel from the road and the steering system's geometry, i.e., the steering gear and the rack. This gives the driver the impression of a conventional, fully mechanical steering system. For example, the force feedback actuator is designed as a rotary drive.

[0005] Furthermore, (mechanical) steering systems are known that include electromechanical steering assistance, such as power steering. These steering systems also include an actuator, which can be designed as a rotary drive.

[0006] In general, (mechanical) steering systems with an additional actuator can be referred to as EPS steering systems (EPS - Electric Power Steering), since they provide a torque in addition to the steering torque mechanically applied by the driver or in dependence on this.

[0007] Furthermore, it is known that modern motor vehicles have steering systems that are operated at least partially autonomously. This means that, among other things, the motor vehicle steers independently, without manual intervention on the part of the driver, for example in an autonomous parking mode. Provision can be made for a mechanical interruption between the steering wheel and the steering gear in the steering system, in particular via a clutch. Furthermore, the steering systems can comprise two or more different steering modes, for example a manual steering mode and an autonomous steering mode, wherein the steering wheel is adjusted axially along the steering column in the autonomous steering mode compared to the manual steering mode, in order, among other things, to signal to the driver that the autonomous steering mode is activated and to provide the driver with more space. In these steering systems that include an autonomous steering mode, the steering wheel may also be designed to rotate when a steer-by-wire steering system or EPS steering system operates in autonomous steering mode. Accordingly, an actuator must be provided that generates a corresponding torque that is transmitted to the steering wheel.

[0008] In order to realize the above-mentioned functions, it is known that external steering systems include, among other things, motors, clutches and gearboxes in order to telescopically adjust the steering column, mechanically decouple the steering wheel from the steering gear or generate a rotational movement of the steering wheel.

[0009] However, it has turned out to be a disadvantage that the installation space required for such a steering system is significantly larger than that required for a conventional (mechanical) steering system that does not have a vehicle mode for autonomous driving or an autonomous steering mode.

[0010] The object of the invention is to provide a steering column assembly and a steering system that provide the additional function of an autonomous steering mode and yet require little installation space.

[0011] The object is achieved according to the invention by a steering column assembly for a motor vehicle having the features of claim 1 and by a steering system having the features of claim 10.

[0012] The steering column assembly according to the invention for a motor vehicle has a rotationally fixed outer tube, a telescopic steering column which is at least partially received in the outer tube, and a rotary drive which is configured to telescopically adjust the telescopic steering column, wherein the telescopic steering column comprises a first steering column section and a second steering column section which at least partially encloses the first steering column section, wherein the two steering column sections are coupled to one another in a telescopic section such that they can be displaced telescopically relative to one another, and wherein the rotary drive is engaged with the first steering column section such that the rotary drive transmits a force to the first steering column section in order to telescopically adjust the telescopic steering column.

[0013] The basic idea of the invention is to design a compact steering column assembly by integrating a telescopic adjustment mechanism into the steering column assembly, in particular in the rotationally fixed outer tube. The telescopic adjustment mechanism is driven by the rotary drive, which is directly coupled to the first steering column section, in order to adjust the telescopic steering column accordingly. In this respect, the structure of a conventional (mechanical) steering system is used, in particular an EPS steering system, which additionally enables the telescopic displacement of the steering wheel, which is used, for example, in an autonomous steering mode.

[0014] The telescopic adjustment mechanism comprises the telescopic steering column, in particular the two steering column sections, as well as the rotary drive with which the telescopic steering column is driven accordingly in order to be adjusted telescopically.

[0015] The second steering column section can have a steering wheel interface at an end opposite the first steering column section, via which a steering wheel can be attached. Accordingly, the vehicle driver can initiate a steering movement via the steering wheel attached to the second steering column section, which is then correspondingly detected or implemented by the steering column assembly. Alternatively, the steering wheel can be actively driven via the second steering column section, thereby generating a rotational movement of the steering wheel. This is provided, among other things, in an autonomous steering mode, so that the vehicle driver can quickly detect the steering movement made on the steering wheel.

[0016] According to the invention, the rotary drive is designed as a force feedback actuator. Accordingly, the rotary drive serves, among other things, to initiate force feedback at the steering wheel, which is provided, for example, in a steer-by-wire steering system to simulate the influences of the road, the wheels, and the steering geometry.

[0017] Alternatively, the rotary drive can be part of an electromechanical steering assistance system, for example a power steering system.

[0018] One aspect provides for a first switchable closure element coupled to the outer tube and the second steering column section, wherein the first switchable closure element has an open position and a closed position. The closure element thus makes it possible to couple the second steering column section to the outer tube, so that the second steering column section is connected in a rotationally fixed manner to the rotationally fixed outer tube, preventing rotation of the second steering column section. The steering wheel coupled to the second steering column section is therefore not rotated.

[0019] In particular, the first switchable closure element in the open position enables a relative rotation of the second steering column section with respect to the outer tube and / or the first switchable closure element in the closed position prevents a relative rotation of the second steering column section with respect to the outer tube. Thus, in the closed position, it is not possible for the vehicle driver to turn the steering wheel, as the steering wheel is coupled to the rotationally fixed outer tube. Also, in the closed position of the first closure element, no rotational movement of the steering wheel is initiated. The open position of the first switchable closure element, on the other hand, is particularly suitable for a manual steering mode in which the vehicle driver manually operates the steering wheel, as this allows a relative rotation between the second steering column section and the rotationally fixed outer tube.Furthermore, the open position of the first switchable closure element is suitable for the steering wheel to be actively driven in an autonomous steering mode in order to execute a rotational movement that corresponds to the autonomously executed steering movement.

[0020] According to a further aspect, a second switchable closure element is provided, which is coupled to the first steering column section and the second steering column section, wherein the first switchable closure element has an open position and a closed position. The two steering column sections can thus be coupled and uncoupled with each other depending on the position of the closure element. This allows different functions to be provided.

[0021] In particular, the second switchable closure element in the open position enables a relative movement of the second steering column section with respect to the first steering column section and / or the second switchable closure element in the closed position prevents a relative movement of the second steering column section with respect to the first steering column section. In the closed position, the two steering column sections are therefore coupled to one another in a rotationally fixed manner, so that the closed position is suitable for use in manual steering mode, so that a steering movement applied to the second steering column section is transmitted to the first steering column section. Likewise, the two steering column sections are coupled to one another in a rotationally fixed manner if the steering wheel is to be actively controlled in an autonomous steering mode in order to simulate the steering movement on the steering wheel, in particular via the rotary drive. In the open position of the second switchable locking element, however, a relative movement of the two steering column sections can be achieved, making this position suitable for a telescopic adjustment mode in which the telescopic steering column is adjusted telescopically. In this respect, an axial and rotary movement can generally be opened or closed via the second locking element.

[0022] According to one embodiment, the steering column assembly has a telescopic adjustment mode in which the first switchable closure element is in its closed position and the second switchable closure element is in its open position. In addition, the steering column assembly can have a manual steering mode in which the first switchable closure element is in its open position and the second switchable closure element is in its closed position. In the telescopic adjustment mode, a relative movement of the two steering column sections to one another is thus possible, so that the telescopic steering column can be adjusted telescopically. In the telescopic adjustment mode, the second switchable closure element is correspondingly in its open position, so that a relative movement of the two steering column sections to one another is possible, whereby the two steering column sections can be adjusted in the axial direction relative to one another, i.e., telescopically.Furthermore, in the telescopic adjustment mode, the first switchable closure element is in its closed position, so that the second steering column section is rotationally fixedly coupled to the non-rotatably arranged outer tube. This means that the non-rotatably arranged outer tube is axially displaced together with the second steering column section when the second steering column section is telescopically adjusted relative to the first steering column section.

[0023] In manual steering mode, however, the two steering column sections are rotationally coupled to one another, preventing any relative movement between the two steering column sections. If the driver initiates a rotational movement on the steering wheel, this is transmitted accordingly via the two steering column sections. If the steering system is a steer-by-wire steering system, the applied steering torque or the intended steering angle can be recorded via sensors. The sensors can be provided on the steering wheel, on the second steering column section and / or on the first steering column section. In addition, the rotary drive, which engages with the first steering column section, can generate force feedback during manual steering mode.In manual steering mode, however, the first switchable locking element is in its open position, so that rotation of the second steering column section relative to the rotationally fixed outer tube is possible.

[0024] In addition to the manual steering mode, an autonomous steering mode with steering simulation can be provided, in which the first switchable locking element is in its open position and the second switchable locking element is in its closed position. However, in this autonomous steering mode with steering simulation, no torque is applied by the driver; instead, the steering torque generated by a control module is reproduced via the rotary drive, so that the steering wheel rotates according to the steering movement. The driver can thus reproduce the autonomously performed steering movements on the steering wheel, as it is controlled accordingly by the rotary drive via the two steering column sections. This is possible because, on the one hand, the second switchable closure element provides a coupling of the two steering column sections and the first switchable closure element enables a relative rotation of the second steering column section with respect to the rotationally fixed outer tube.

[0025] According to one aspect, the first steering column section has an outer adjustment geometry on the outside, which corresponds to an inner adjustment geometry on the inside of the second steering column section. The inner adjustment geometry and the outer adjustment geometry are provided in the telescopic section of the telescopic steering column, in which the two steering column sections are coupled to one another. Accordingly, the two steering column sections can be adjusted relative to one another via the respective geometries present. It can be provided that the respective geometries on the outside and inside extend over an axial distance of approximately 250 mm to 350 mm, in particular 300 mm, so that a corresponding adjustment range is available.

[0026] In particular, the outer adjustment geometry and / or the inner adjustment geometry comprise or includes a thread, a spiral serration and / or a ball screw nut. These geometries ensure that the two steering column sections can be adjusted telescopically relative to one another, provided that the rotary drive rotates the first steering column section in the telescopic adjustment mode. As a result, the second steering column section, which is rotationally fixedly coupled to the outer tube in the telescopic adjustment mode, is telescopically adjusted in the axial direction via the corresponding geometries, since it cannot rotate with it. The correspondingly designed geometries translate the rotary movement of the first steering column section of the telescopic steering column into an axial movement of the second steering column section, such that the two steering column sections are moved axially relative to one another in the telescopic section.

[0027] Furthermore, the invention provides a steering system with a steering column assembly of the aforementioned type. The steering system can be a steer-by-wire steering system, such that the rotary drive is a force feedback actuator. Alternatively or additionally, the steering system can comprise an assistance system, for example, an autonomous parking unit, an autonomous lane keeping assistant, and / or an autonomous driving unit. Furthermore, alternatively or additionally, the steering system can comprise an electromechanical steering assistance system having a corresponding actuator. It is thus possible to accommodate an autonomous steering mode and a manual steering mode in a steering system in a compact manner, since no additional or external components need to be used to implement a telescopic adjustment mechanism provided therein, which is used in an autonomous steering mode. The telescopic adjustment mechanism is integrated into the steering column assembly, specifically the non-rotatably mounted outer tube, allowing the use of the same components as those used in a conventional EPS steering system. Thus, no external components are required to implement the additional function of the telescopic adjustment mechanism, as the telescopic adjustment mechanism is implemented using the components typically found in a steering column assembly of a (mechanical or steer-by-wire) steering system.

[0028] Further advantages and features of the invention will become apparent from the following description and the drawing, to which reference is made. The single figure shows a steering system according to the invention.

[0029] The single figure shows a steering system for a motor vehicle in a sectional view, which has a steering column assembly 10.

[0030] The steering column assembly 10 comprises a rotationally fixed outer tube 12 in which a telescopic steering column 14 is at least partially arranged. The telescopic steering column 14 comprises a first steering column section 16 and a second steering column section 18, which at least partially encloses the first steering column section 16 in a telescopic section 20 in which the two steering column sections 14, 16 are coupled to one another.

[0031] The second steering column section 18 comprises a steering wheel interface 22, via which a steering wheel (not shown here) can be coupled to the second steering column section 18, so that a driver of the motor vehicle can operate the steering column assembly 10 accordingly, in particular in a manual steering mode, as will be explained below.

[0032] The second steering column assembly 18 is rotatably mounted within the rotationally fixed outer tube 12 via a bearing 24, wherein a first switchable closure element 26 is provided between the outer tube 12 and the second steering column section 18, which is only shown schematically.

[0033] The first switchable closure element 26 has an open position in which a relative rotation of the second steering column section 18 with respect to the rotationally fixed outer tube 12 is possible, namely via the bearing 24. Furthermore, the first switchable closure element 26 has a closed position in which the outer tube 12 is rotationally fixedly coupled to the second steering column section 18, so that no relative rotation between the outer tube 12 and the second steering column section 18 is possible. Generally, the second steering column section 18 cannot be rotated when the first closure element 26 is in the closed position. The functioning of the first switchable closure element 26 will be explained below.

[0034] The first steering column section 16, which is coupled to the second steering column section 18 in the telescopic section 20, is also engaged with a rotary drive 28, so that the rotary drive 28 can drive the first steering column section 16 in rotation. The rotary drive 28 can be a worm drive that drives the first steering column section 16 in rotation, in particular in both directions.

[0035] The rotary drive 28 can be designed as a force feedback actuator 30, via which feedback from the road, the wheels or the steering geometry, i.e. the steering rod, is usually simulated, provided that the steering system is a steer-by-wire steering system that has no mechanical connection from the steering wheel to the wheels.

[0036] Alternatively or additionally, the rotary drive 28 can be part of an electromechanical steering assistance, which is, for example, part of a power steering system.

[0037] The rotary movement generated by the rotary drive 28 can be transmitted via the first steering column section 16 to the second steering column section 18, provided that a second switchable closure element 32 is in its closed position, which is coupled to the first steering column section 16 and the second steering column section 18.

[0038] The second switchable closure element 32 is assigned to the telescopic section 20 of the telescopic steering column 14, wherein, in addition to the closed position, it can assume an open position in which a relative movement of the two steering column sections 16, 18 to one another is possible.

[0039] In the closed position of the second switchable closure element 32, however, a rotationally fixed connection of the two steering column sections 16, 18 is provided, so that a steering torque applied by the driver or a corresponding steering angle can be transmitted over the entire telescopic steering column 14, i.e. over both steering column sections 16, 18 coupled to one another. In this case, a mechanical connection can be provided from the steering wheel, which is arranged on the second steering column section 18, to the wheels, provided that it is a conventional (mechanical) steering system.

[0040] Alternatively, the steering system can be designed as a steer-by-wire steering system, so that the applied steering torque or the steering angle is detected by at least one sensor, which forwards the corresponding signals to a control module for the wheels, which are controlled electronically accordingly.

[0041] In this respect, the steering system has a manual steering mode, which can be designed as a mechanical steering mode or as a steer-by-wire steering mode.

[0042] In addition, the steering system includes a telescopic adjustment mode in which the telescopic steering column 14 is adjusted telescopically. In the telescopic adjustment mode, the two steering column sections 16, 18 are adjusted telescopically relative to each other, which is achieved via the telescopic section 20.

[0043] In the telescopic adjustment mode, the first switchable closure element 26 is in its closed position, so that relative rotation of the second steering column section 18 to the rotationally fixed outer tube 12 is not possible. Furthermore, the second switchable closure element 32 is in its open position, so that relative movement of the two steering column sections 16, 18 to each other is possible.

[0044] If the rotary drive 28 now applies a rotary movement to the first steering column section 16 with which the rotary drive 28 is engaged, this rotary movement of the first steering column section 16 is converted into an axial, translational movement of the second steering column section 18, since the first steering column section 16 comprises on its outer side 34 a correspondingly designed adjustment outer geometry 36 which cooperates with a corresponding adjustment inner geometry 38 of the second steering column section 18, which is provided on the inner side 40 of the second steering column section 18.

[0045] The geometries can be a thread, a spiral spline, and / or a ball screw nut, so that the rotational movement of the first steering column section 16 is correspondingly converted into the translational movement of the second steering column section 18 with respect to the first steering column section 16. This is possible because the second steering column section 18 is rotationally fixedly coupled to the outer tube 12, so that the second steering column section 18 is also rotationally fixed but axially displaceable.

[0046] In this respect, the second steering column section 18 is translationally adjusted in the axial direction with respect to the first steering column section 16, whereby this can be done over a distance of 250 mm to 350 mm, in particular 300 mm. The distance is defined by the respective geometries 36, 38 of the two steering column sections 16, 18 in the telescopic section 20. In the closed position of the second switchable closure element 32, however, a rotationally fixed connection of the two steering column sections 16, 18 is provided, so that a steering torque applied by the vehicle driver or a corresponding steering angle can be transmitted across the entire telescopic steering column 14, i.e., across both coupled steering column sections 16, 18. In this case, a mechanical connection can be provided from the steering wheel, which is arranged on the second steering column section 18, to the wheels, provided it is a conventional (mechanical) steering system.

[0047] Alternatively, the steering system can be designed as a steer-by-wire steering system, so that the applied steering torque or the steering angle is detected by at least one sensor, which forwards the corresponding signals to a control module for the wheels, which are controlled electronically accordingly.

[0048] In this respect, the steering system has a manual steering mode, which can be designed as a mechanical steering mode or as a steer-by-wire steering mode.

[0049] In addition, the steering system includes a telescopic adjustment mode in which the telescopic steering column 14 is adjusted telescopically. In the telescopic adjustment mode, the two steering column sections 16, 18 are adjusted telescopically relative to each other, which is achieved via the telescopic section 20.

[0050] In the telescopic adjustment mode, the first switchable closure element 26 is in its closed position, so that relative rotation of the second steering column section 18 to the rotationally fixed outer tube 12 is not possible. Furthermore, the second switchable closure element 32 is in its open position, so that relative movement of the two steering column sections 16, 18 to each other is possible.

[0051] If the rotary drive 28 now applies a rotary movement to the first steering column section 16 with which the rotary drive 28 is engaged, this rotary movement of the first steering column section 16 is converted into an axial, translational movement of the second steering column section 18, since the first steering column section 16 comprises on its outer side 34 a correspondingly designed adjustment outer geometry 36 which cooperates with a corresponding adjustment inner geometry 38 of the second steering column section 18, which is provided on the inner side 40 of the second steering column section 18.

[0052] The geometries can be a thread, a spiral spline, and / or a ball screw nut, so that the rotational movement of the first steering column section 16 is correspondingly converted into the translational movement of the second steering column section 18 with respect to the first steering column section 16. This is possible because the second steering column section 18 is rotationally fixedly coupled to the outer tube 12, so that the second steering column section 18 is also rotationally fixed but axially displaceable.

[0053] In this respect, the second steering column section 18 is adjusted translationally in the axial direction relative to the first steering column section 16, which can be done over a distance of 250 mm to 350 mm, in particular 300 mm. The distance is defined by the respective geometries 36, 38 of the two steering column sections 16, 18 in the telescopic section 20.

[0054] The telescopic adjustment mode is particularly suitable for an autonomous steering mode of the steering system, in which the motor vehicle automatically carries out the steering movement so that the steering wheel is moved into a retracted position compared to the manual or steer-by-wire steering mode in order to give the driver more space.

[0055] The two steering column sections 16, 18, in particular in the telescopic section 20, as well as the rotary drive 28 together represent a telescopic adjustment mechanism 42 of the steering column assembly 10, via which the steering wheel can be adjusted accordingly in a telescopic manner, for example until it rests on the dashboard of the motor vehicle.

[0056] If a manual steering mode is to be provided, in particular a mechanical or steer-by-wire steering mode, the first switchable closure element 26 is switched to its open position, whereas the second switchable closure element 32 is switched to its closed position, so that the second steering column section 18 can rotate relative to the rotationally fixed outer tube 12 and, at the same time, a rotational coupling is established between the two steering column sections 16, 18. The second steering column section 18 is in rotational connection with the rotary drive 28 via the first steering column section 16.

[0057] In a steer-by-wire steering system, the rotary drive 28 can then function as a force feedback actuator 30, so that it generates corresponding torques in the steering wheel, which are intended to simulate the road, the wheels or the steering geometry accordingly in order to give the driver the feeling of a conventional (mechanical) steering system.

[0058] Furthermore, the first switchable closure element 26 can be in its open position and the second switchable closure element 32 can be in its closed position if an autonomous steering mode with steering simulation is selected. In this case, the motor vehicle performs the steering movements autonomously, which are indicated to the driver via the steering wheel, in particular its rotational movement. Based on the positions of the closure elements 26, 32, the rotary drive 28 can drive the second steering column section 18 and the steering wheel attached thereto accordingly in rotation, in order to reproduce the autonomously executed steering movements on the steering wheel.

[0059] The telescopic adjustment mechanism 42, in particular the telescopic section 20, is generally designed via the two geometries 36, 38 in such a way that angular movements and torques can be transmitted.

[0060] The steering column assembly 10 is further configured to have an energy absorption area 44 located outside the telescopic section 20 in the event of an accident. For example, the energy absorption area 44 is provided between the telescopic section 20 and the rotary drive 28. Furthermore, the energy absorption section 44 can be provided between the telescopic section 20 and the steering wheel interface 22.

[0061] Thus, a steering column assembly 10 and a steering system are created with which a telescopic adjustment mechanism 42 is formed in a compact manner, which can be provided for an autonomous steering mode.
