Description

CROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATION

[0001] This application claims the benefit of Korean Patent Application No. 2017-0036562 filed on March 23, 2017, with the Korean Intellectual Property Office, the disclosure of which is incorporated herein by reference. BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION 1. Field of the invention

[0002] Embodiments of the present invention relate to a disc brake for vehicles and, more particularly, to a disc brake for vehicles adapted to reduce rattling noises caused by a friction lining contacting a brake caliper housing. 2. Description of the state of the art

[0003] A vehicle disc brake is a device designed to slow a wheel by using friction pads to press against both sides of a disc rotating with the wheel.

[0004] For example, disc brakes of the floating caliper brake type are known from the documents DE 196 50 592 A1, DE 39 03 251 A1, DE 689 04 258 T2, JP H06-8 347 Y2 and DE 10 2014 212 307 A1.

[0005] Generally, a disc brake for vehicles comprises a pair of friction pads arranged on both sides of a disc, a caliper housing and a piston configured to press the pair of friction pads against the disc, and a motion guide configured to guide the friction pad pressed against the disc by the caliper housing and the piston.

[0006] Furthermore, in some disc brakes for vehicles, a disc brake for vehicles is provided with a pair of guide arms, each of which is integrally connected to a movement guide via a vehicle steering knuckle and is arranged on both outer sides of a brake caliper housing, and a pair of outwardly directed projections extending between the pair of guide arms and the brake caliper housing and arranged on both sides, so that a friction lining is slidably supported by the pair of guide arms.

[0007] However, such a disc brake for vehicles has a problem in that abnormal noise is generated when the brake caliper housing comes into contact with the outward projections of the friction pad due to the inertia of the brake caliper housing in the direction of rotation of the disc during emergency braking of a vehicle. DETAILED DESCRIPTION

[0021] Hereinafter, embodiments of the present disclosure will be explained in more detail with reference to the accompanying drawings. The embodiments described below are provided as examples to fully convey the spirit of the present disclosure to those skilled in the art. The present disclosure is not limited to the embodiments described below and may be embodied in other forms. Parts irrelevant to the description are omitted from the drawings in order to clearly explain the embodiments of the present disclosure, and the widths, lengths, and thicknesses of components shown in the accompanying drawings may be exaggerated for convenience in description. Like components are denoted by like reference numerals in the description.

[0022] As in the Fig. 1 to 2, a disc brake for vehicles according to the embodiment includes a pair of friction pads 2 and 3 arranged on both sides of a disc 1 rotatable with a wheel, a caliper housing 4 and a piston 5 configured to press the pair of friction pads 2 and 3 against the disc 1, and a movement guide 6 configured to guide the movement of the pair of friction pads 2 and 3 pressed against the disc 1 by the caliper housing 4 and the piston 5.

[0023] Friction elements 2a and 3a may be respectively fixed to the inner surfaces of the friction pads 2 and 3 facing the disc 1, and the pair of friction pads 2 and 3 may be divided into the inner friction pad 2, which is located on an inner side of the disc brake for vehicles and is pressed against the disc 1 by the piston 5, and the outer friction pad 3, which is located on an outer side of the disc brake for vehicles opposite the inner side of the disc brake for vehicles.

[0024] The motion guide 6 comprises a pair of guide arms 8 arranged on both outer sides of the brake caliper housing 4 and integrally connected via a steering knuckle 7 attached to a vehicle body. The pair of guide arms 8 can extend from both sides of the steering knuckle 7 beyond the disc 1 parallel to an axis line of the disc 1.

[0025] The caliper housing 4 may include a cylinder 4a in which a bore 4b is formed such that the piston 5, which is configured to press the inner friction pad 2 against the disc 1, is installed to be movable forward and backward, a finger 4c configured to press the outer friction pad 3 against the disc 1, and a cover 4d configured to connect upper portions of the cylinder 4a and the finger 4c. The caliper housing 4 may be installed to cover the pair of friction pads 2 and 3 from an outer side of the disc 1 to an inner side thereof in the radial direction of the disc 1.

[0026] Within the guide arms 8, guide pins 9 may be coupled to both sides of the steering knuckle 7, and sliding couplings 4e slidably coupled to the guide pins 9 may be provided on both sides of the cylinder 4a of the brake caliper housing 4. Consequently, the brake caliper housing 4 may be installed between the two guide arms 8 so as to be displaceable in a direction perpendicular to the disc 1.

[0027] Piston 5 may be configured to perform a forward operation by means of brake hydraulic pressure generated by a driver depressing a brake pedal. Accordingly, a hydraulic pressure guide bore (not shown) may be provided in cylinder 4a to transmit the brake hydraulic pressure generated during braking to bore 4b.

[0028] The piston 5 may be driven by a motor in contrast to the embodiment, and here the motor designed to move the piston 5 forward and backward may be installed behind the piston 5 in a state in which the bore 4b and the bore for hydraulic pressure guidance (not shown) are removed.

[0029] A piston seal 10 may be installed between an outer surface of the piston 5 and an inner circumference of the bore 4b, and the piston seal 10 may return the piston 5, which is moved forward to press the inner friction lining 2, to an initial state using a restoring force thereof.

[0030] In addition, pad springs 11 in the form of a leaf spring can provide elastic support between the inner friction pad 2 and the piston 5 and the outer friction pad 3 and the finger 4c.

[0031] Each of the friction pads 2 and 3 includes a pad body 20 pressed by the caliper housing 4 and the piston 5 and disposed at the center thereof, and a pair of outward projections 30 provided on both sides thereof so as to extend between the pair of guide arms 8 and the caliper housing 4, and is slidably supported by the guide arms 8 by means of the pair of outward projections 30.

[0032] The outwardly directed projection 30 may include a sliding guide 31 arranged on a side of an upper part of the pad body 20 so as to be located between the guide arm 8 and the cover 4d of the caliper housing 4, and a connecting portion 32 configured to connect the pad body 20 and the sliding guide 31. Sliding bearing surfaces 31a and 8a, which are slidably supported against each other, may be formed on a bottom side of the sliding guide 31 and a top side of the guide arm 8, respectively.

[0033] The following describes a braking process and a brake release process of the disc brake for vehicles with the structure described above.

[0034] When a driver steps on the brake pedal, the piston 5 first presses the inner friction pad 2 against the disc 1 due to a brake hydraulic pressure acting on an interior of the bore 4b, and the brake caliper housing 4 slides along the guide pin 9 in the rearward direction of the piston 5 due to a reaction force caused by the hydraulic pressure remaining in the bore 4b and presses the outer friction pad 3 against the disc 1 by means of the finger 4c. Accordingly, the disc 1 can be pressed between the friction elements 2a and 3a attached to the inner surfaces of the friction pads 2 and 3 arranged on both sides of the disc 1 and the vehicle can be braked.

[0035] When the driver releases the brake hydraulic pressure on the bore 4b by taking his foot off the brake pedal, the piston 5 returns to the initial state by a restoring force of the piston seal 10, and a friction force between the disc 1 and the friction pads 2 and 3 arranged on both sides of the disc 1 is then reduced and a braking state of a wheel is released.

[0036] Pad clips 40 for providing elastic support between the outward projections 30 and the caliper housing 4 are fitted to the outward projections 30 of the friction pads 2 and 3. Since the pad clips 40 provide elastic support between the outward projections 30 of the caliper housing 4 and the caliper housing 4 in a state where direct contact between the outward projections 30 and the caliper housing 4 is blocked, contact noise between the caliper housing 4 and the outward projections 30 due to the inertia of the caliper housing 4 in the rotation direction of the disc 1 during emergency braking is prevented.

[0037] Since a direction of movement of the caliper housing 4 through the disc 1 in a case where the vehicle is moving forward is opposite to a direction of movement in a case where the vehicle is moving backward, and accordingly there is a risk that the caliper housing 4 comes into contact with both the forward-direction outward projection 30 and the reverse-direction outward projection 30 according to the forward or reverse direction of the vehicle during emergency braking, the pad clips 40 are preferably individually attached to the outward projections 30 on both sides of the friction pads 2 and 3 in order to solve a contact problem between the caliper housing 4 and the outward projections 30 arranged on both sides during emergency braking.

[0038] In addition, since a state in which the sliding bearing surface 31a of the outward projection 30 is in stable contact with the sliding bearing surface 8a of the guide arm 8 is maintained, in a structure in which the pad clip 40 provides elastic support between the outward projection 30 and the caliper housing 4, noise due to sliding actions in which the friction pads 2 and 3 slide the guide arms 8 during braking can also be effectively reduced.

[0039] As in the Fig. 3 to 5, the pad clamp 40 may include a support plate 50 configured to support an outer surface of the outwardly directed projection 30, locking members 60 that bend and extend from a plurality of positions of an edge of the support plate 50 and fix the support plate 50 to the outwardly directed projection 30 to cover a periphery of a side surface of the outwardly directed projection 30 and define the outwardly directed projection 30, and a spring 70 that bends and extends from the edge of the support plate 50 and is disposed between the locking members 60 to provide elastic support between the support plate 50 and the caliper housing 4.

[0040] The pad clamp 40 can be formed by cutting and bending a metal plate member, and the support plate 50, the locking member 60 and the spring 70 included in the pad clamp 40 can be integrally manufactured into one body in one operation of forming the pad clamp 40.

[0041] The support plate 50 may be a main body of the pad clip 40 and may be provided in the form of a plate having substantially the same shape and area as the outward projection 30 to form most of a support surface of the pad clip 40 for the outward projection 30. Alternatively, the support plate 50 may also be provided to support a portion of the outer surface of the outward projection 30 located on one side of the slide guide 31. The outer surface of the outward projection 30 supported by the support plate 50 indicates an outer surface of the outward projection 30 located on an outer side of the friction pads 2 and 3 to which the friction elements 2a and 3a are not attached.

[0042] The locking parts 60 may be provided in hook shapes configured to cover a periphery of a side surface of the outward projection 30, and may fix the support plate 50 in a state where the support plate 50 is supported from the outward projection 30 by a plurality of locking parts 60 that cooperate with each other and are configured to define the outward projection 30.

[0043] The positions and number of the locking pieces 60 can be varied within a range where the locking pieces 60 define a plurality of positions on a periphery of the outward projection 30 except for one side of the sliding bearing surface 31a, so that a sliding operation of the slide guide 31 is not affected by the locking pieces 60. Furthermore, the shapes of the locking pieces 60 can be freely varied within a range where the locking pieces 60 elastically cover the side surface of the outward projection 30.

[0044] The locking parts 60 according to the embodiment are formed of four parts and are provided for defining four positions on the circumference of the outwardly directed projection 30, which consist of three positions on the circumference of the sliding guide 31 and one position on the circumference of the connecting portion 32.

[0045] The plurality of locking members 60 and the spring 70 of the pad clamp 40 may be provided to extend from the edge of the support plate 50 in a pressing direction of each of the friction pads 2 and 3, which are adapted to press the disc 1 in consideration of the mountability of the outward projection 30.

[0046] Since the pad clamp 40 presses the support plate 50 against the outward projection 30 in a state in which the ends of the locking pieces 60 on an outer side of the outer surface of the outer projection 30 are arranged to face the periphery of the outer projection 30, the plurality of locking pieces 60 elastically open to the outside of the support plate 50, and accordingly, the support plate 50 is supported by the outer surface of the outward projection 30, and in this case, a state of the plurality of locking pieces 60 is converted to a state in which the plurality of locking pieces 60 restrict the periphery of the side surface of the outward projection 30, and thus the pad clamp 40 can be easily assembled with the outward projection 30.

[0047] The pad clamp 40 assembled with the outwardly directed projection 30 can serve as a leaf spring configured to provide elastic support between the outwardly directed projection 30 and an outer side wall 4f of the caliper housing 4 using the spring 70.

[0048] Since the spring 70 extends obliquely outwardly from the edge of the carrier plate 50 in a pressing direction in which the friction linings 2 and 3 press against the disc 1, the spring 70 can provide elastic support between each of the outwardly directed projections 30, which are spaced apart from each other, and the brake caliper housing 4. For reference, Fig. 5 is a view showing a state in which the outer friction lining 3 is removed.

[0049] On one side of an end portion of the spring 70, a mounting guide 71 may be provided in the radial direction of the disc 1, bending and extending toward an inner side of the support plate 50 in a direction perpendicular to the spring 70.

[0050] As in Fig. 6, the mounting guide 71 prevents the spring 70 from being damaged by being caught or deformed by being pressed by the caliper housing 4 during a process in which the friction pads 2 and 3 and the caliper housing 4 are assembled such that the two side walls 4f of the caliper housing 4 are supported between the pair of outwardly directed projections 30 on which the caliper clamps 40 are mounted. An arrow of the Fig. 6 indicates a mounting direction of the friction linings 2 and 3 and the brake caliper housing 4.

[0051] In addition, a sliding guide 72 may be provided at one end of the spring 70 in an extension direction thereof, which slide guide 72 bends and extends in a movement direction of the friction linings 2 and 3 to the inside of the carrier plate 50 in order to guide the spring 70 for displacing the brake caliper housing 4.

[0052] As in Fig. 7, by providing the slide guide 72 so as to gradually bend outward from the support plate 50 in a direction opposite to a direction of inclination of the support plate 50 so as to be open to the outside, a smooth sliding operation can be ensured in which the spring 70 moves toward the disc 1 in a state in which the spring 70 is in contact with the side wall 4f of the brake caliper housing 4 during braking. An arrow of the Fig. 7 indicates a displacement direction of the brake caliper housing 4 and the pad clamp 40 during braking.

[0053] Although it is illustrated and described in the drawings that the lining clip 40 includes four locking members 60 and a spring 70 and is installed on the outwardly directed projection 30 of each of the friction linings 2 and 3, the lining clip 40 is not limited thereto and can be modified and used in various forms. For example, the example of the lining clip 40' according to another embodiment of the present disclosure is shown in Fig. 8 and Fig. 9. The same reference numerals as in the previous drawings refer to elements that serve the same functions.

[0054] On the Fig. 8 and Fig.9, the pad clamp 40' according to the embodiment may include a support plate 50 configured to support an outer surface of an outwardly directed projection 30, and locking pieces 60 and 60' that bend and extend from a plurality of positions on an edge of the support plate 50 fix the support plate 50 to the outwardly directed projection 30 to cover and define a periphery of a side surface of the outwardly directed projection 30, and of a plurality of locking pieces 60 and 60', the locking piece 60' facing a side wall 4f of the caliper housing 4 may be provided to provide elastic support between the support plate 50 and the caliper housing 4. That is, the pad clamp 40' according to the embodiment has a structure in which a locking part 60 and the spring 70 of the pad clamp 40 according to the previous embodiment are integrally formed as one body.Accordingly, the locking part 60', which faces the side wall 4f of the brake caliper housing 4, extends such that it is open outwardly from the support plate 50, and in this way, the locking part 60' can be provided such that it is supported by the side wall 4f of the brake caliper housing 4 during the assembly of the friction pads 2 and 3.

[0055] In addition, as in the previous embodiment, an assembly guide 61 and a sliding guide 62 may be provided on the locking part 60' opposite the side wall 4f of the caliper housing 4 to prevent deformation of the pad clip 40' and to smoothly assemble the caliper clip 40' in a process in which each of the friction pads 2 and 3, to which the pad clip 40' is mounted, is installed into the caliper housing 4. That is, the assembly guide 61 bends and extends toward an inner side of the support plate 50 in a direction perpendicular to the locking part 60', and the sliding guide 62 is formed by an end portion of the locking part 60' bending and extending toward the inner side of the support plate 50.

[0056] The locking parts 60 and 60' of the pad clamp 40' can be variously changed in a range in which the locking parts 60 and 60' limit a plurality of positions on a circumference of the outwardly directed projection 30 except on a side of a sliding bearing surface 31a, so that a sliding operation of a sliding guide 31 is not affected by the locking parts 60 and 60'.

[0057] In this case, the pad clamps 40 and 40' according to the embodiments can be coated with Teflon in order to prevent corrosion of the pad clamps 40 and 40', since they are assembled in such a way that they are exposed to the outside.

[0058] As apparent from the above description, a disc brake for vehicles according to the embodiment of the present disclosure can reduce rattling noises caused by a caliper housing contacting a friction pad during emergency braking because a pad clip assembled with an outward projection of the friction pad provides elastic support between the caliper housing and the outward projection.
