CROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED REGISTRATIONS
[0001] The present application is based on and claims priority of the preliminary US patent application No. 62 / 790,711 filed on January 10, 2019, the disclosure of which is incorporated herein by reference. AREA OF THE FORMS OF DISCLOSURE
[0002] The present disclosure relates to a Christmas tree fastening element comprising a tether that couples a cap of the fastening element to a base thereof. BACKGROUND
[0003] Fasteners can be used to join components together. Christmas tree clips, also known as Christmas tree fasteners or simply Christmas trees, are a type of fastener often used to secure trim or other softer materials to a surface of a rigid object. Christmas tree fasteners can be single- or double-ended and typically include a rounded head from which a shaft extends. Such fasteners may also include multiple ribs or wings extending outward from the shaft in an annular configuration. The fastener is configured to be driven through an opening in the rigid object during operation, with the ribs or wings designed to engage a circumferential edge of the opening to secure the Christmas tree fastener within the rigid object. The configuration of the ribs or wings allows the fastener to be secured to a wide range of materials with varying densities or thicknesses. Fir tree fasteners can be releasable or non-releasable. Furthermore, fir tree fasteners may incorporate a drive feature (for example, a receptacle, slot, or the like) configured to accept the working end of a drive tool, thus providing a user with the means to install the fastener in an opening using the drive tool.
[0004] Christmas tree fasteners are typically manufactured as individual, self-contained parts. Consequently, additional, related fasteners or mounting hardware are usually supplied separately. In one specific application, Christmas tree fasteners are used in automotive applications, for example, with brackets or conductor channel guides. In these situations, the Christmas tree fasteners are often supplied in combination with the additional mounting hardware, but they are not provided with any type of retention mechanism to secure the Christmas tree fastener during shipping.
[0005] In many cases, components of a Christmas tree fastener assembly can be lost or misplaced because they are provided in a loose configuration relative to one another. Given the above, there is a need for an improved Christmas tree fastener assembly where different components are attached or tied together. Such an improved assembly can increase installation efficiency by reducing the time a user might otherwise spend searching for lost or misplaced components. SUMMARY
[0006] Embodiments of the present disclosure generally relate to a Christmas tree fastening element arrangement comprising a cap, a base, a band connecting the cap to the base, and a shaft extending from the base. Several first wings and several second wings extend outwards from the shaft, the several first wings being longitudinally offset from the several second wings.
[0007] The Christmas tree fastener assembly is designed to secure one or more soft materials to the exterior of the rigid object during operation. The shaft of the Christmas tree fastener is designed to be driven through an opening in the rigid object, such that the first and second wings abut an interior surface of the rigid object, preventing the fastener assembly from being ejected from the opening. The base of the fastener abuts an exterior surface of the rigid object, and a rim extends upward from the base. The band that connects the base to the cap extends outward from the base. The cap is configured to be secured to the rim by locking features.
[0008] When attaching a soft material to a rigid object, an opening in the soft material is guided over the edge, the tape is wrapped around a circumferential edge of the soft material, and the cap is secured to the edge using the locking features. This secures the soft material between the cap and the base, thus attaching it to the rigid object.
[0009] In some embodiments, the Christmas tree mounting element assembly is attached to the soft material before being attached to the rigid object. In other embodiments, the Christmas tree mounting element assembly is fixed to the rigid object before being subsequently attached to the soft material.
[0010] In some embodiments, the Christmas tree fastener assembly may include a drive feature on its base, the drive feature being configured to receive the working end of a drive tool (for example, a screwdriver, socket wrench, or other) so that a user can use a drive tool to move the fastener assembly forward through the opening in the rigid object. The drive feature may comprise a slot, opening, receptacle, notch, polygonal projection, or any other structure designed to interact with the working end of a drive tool.
[0011] In a particular embodiment, a Christmas tree fastening element assembly comprises a cap, a base, a band connecting the cap to the base, and a shaft extending from the base. Several wings extend radially outward from the shaft. It is also possible for the cap, band, base, and shaft to be integral. Furthermore, the multiple wings can include multiple first wings and multiple second wings, such that the multiple first wings are longitudinally offset from the multiple second wings. The cap can also be fixed to the base by means of one or more locking features extending from the cap and / or the base. The one or more locking features can include a first locking feature comprising at least one arm suspended from a first surface of the cap.The one or more locking features may further include a second locking feature comprising an annular rim extending upward from a second face of the base, the annular rim being configured to engage with the at least one arm. The at least one arm may include multiple first arms separated by multiple spaces. Furthermore, the annular rim may include one or more slots or spaces configured to allow one of the multiple first arms to be accessible to a tool to disengage the cap from the base when the fir-tree fastener assembly is in a locked configuration.
[0012] In another embodiment, a one-piece Christmas tree fastener assembly comprises a cap, a base, a band connecting the cap to the base, a shaft extending from the base, and several wings extending radially outward from the shaft. The one-piece Christmas tree fastener is movable between an unlocked configuration, such that the cap is positioned at a first distance from the base, and a locked configuration, such that the cap is positioned at a second distance from the base. The first distance is greater than the second distance.
[0013] Furthermore, the multiple wings may comprise multiple first wings and multiple second wings, with the multiple first wings being longitudinally offset from the multiple second wings. Additionally, the cap may be detachably fixed to the base by at least one locking feature when the one-piece Christmas tree fastener is in the locked configuration. The at least one locking feature may include at least one first arm extending from the cap and an annular rim extending from the base, the at least one first arm being configured to engage with the annular rim when the one-piece Christmas tree fastener is in the locked configuration.Furthermore, the at least one first arm can comprise multiple first arms hanging from a bottom of the cap, the multiple first arms being arranged in a radial configuration and separated by multiple spaces. The cap can further comprise a central hole extending axially through it, the multiple first arms being arranged radially around the central hole, the annular rim of the base being configured to extend axially through the central hole when the one-piece fir-tree fastener is moved into the locked configuration. It is also conceivable that the annular rim of the base can define the perimeter of a recessed area, and that a drive feature can be located in the recessed area, the drive feature being configured to interact with a working end of a drive tool.
[0014] In yet another embodiment, a fastening element arrangement is provided for attaching at least one material to an outer surface of a first object, wherein the at least one material contains an opening and the outer surface of the first object contains a bore. The fastening element comprises a cap with a first locking feature, a base with a second locking feature, a band connecting the cap to the base, a shaft extending from the base, and several wings extending radially outward from the shaft. The fastening element arrangement is movable between an unlocked configuration, such that the first locking feature is not engaged with the second locking feature, and a locked configuration, such that the first locking feature is engaged with the second locking feature.
[0015] It is conceivable that the base, band, and shaft could be integrally formed. Furthermore, the second locking feature could include an annular rim extending axially upward from a top surface of the base. When the fastener assembly is in the unlocked configuration, the opening of the at least one material could also be configured to pass over the annular rim of the base, so that subsequent movement of the fastener assembly from the unlocked to the locked configuration secures the at least one material between the cap and the base.In addition, the annular rim can define a perimeter of a recessed area, wherein the recessed area contains a drive feature therein, the drive feature being configured to engage with a drive tool so that the drive tool can be used to install the fastener assembly in the bore of the first object.
