Abstract

The invention relates to an optical sensor (1) for detecting objects in a detection area, comprising a receiver unit in the form of an image sensor with an arrangement of pixel elements, and a computing unit (9) in which an output signal is generated depending on the image signals from the image sensor. The image sensor is an event camera (3), whose image signals are changes in the light intensity of the pixel elements that constitute events. N regions of interest (ROIs) (14a to 14d) are defined within the field of view (5) of the event camera (3), with each ROI (14a to 14d) being assigned a switching output (23). For each ROI (14a to 14d) within a defined accumulation time window, the events occurring there are detected and evaluated with temporal and spatial resolution.Front (A) and rear (B) edges of objects are determined, wherein for each ROI (14a to 14d) when a front edge (A) of an object is determined, the switching output (23) assigned to this ROI (14a to 14d) is set, and that when the rear edge (B) of the object is subsequently determined, the switching output (23) is reset.
