Abstract

The invention relates to a method for operating a fuel cell device (100) for a motor vehicle. The fuel cell device (100) comprises a fuel cell (110) for generating electricity from hydrogen and a hydrogen circulation system for transporting hydrogen from a supply unit via a fuel cell unit (145) and a water separator (120) with a drain valve (115). The method includes a reading step and an output step. In the reading step, the valve signal, which represents the actual flow rate of a liquid through the drain valve (115) of the fuel cell device (100), is read. In the output step, the control signal for controlling a component of the vehicle and / or an output unit is output in response to the valve signal.
