The invention relates to a method for operating a drive unit for a motor vehicle, which has an exhaust gas generating drive unit and an exhaust gas turbocharger fluidically connected to the drive unit.The invention provides that, during operation of the drive unit, an operating parameter of the exhaust gas turbocharger and a state parameter of the exhaust gas turbocharger occurring when the exhaust gas turbocharger is operated at that operating parameter are recorded and stored in a turbocharger model (1). Within the framework of an optimization process using the operating parameter as an input parameter, the state parameter of the exhaust gas turbocharger is estimated using the turbocharger model (1) and checked for compliance with a condition. The optimization is performed to determine an extreme value of the operating parameter using different values ​​for the operating parameter, and the drive unit is operated with a value of the operating parameter that is limited to this extreme value.
