Lithium-ion battery with a lithiated Nafion electrode

Abstract

A rechargeable lithium-ion battery is provided. The battery comprises a cathode with a current collector and an active electrode layer coated onto the current collector. The active electrode layer includes an active cathode material and a lithiated nafion (Li-nafion) in direct contact with the active cathode material and the liquid electrolyte. The Li-nafion is deposited directly onto the outer surface of the cathode material, thus forming an interface between the liquid electrolyte and the cathode material. The Li-nafion can be deposited as a coating or as a multitude of particles covering a portion of the outer surface of individual cathode material particles.The cathode with Li-Nafion-coated cathode material particles provides improved discharge rate performance, cycle stability, and fast charging capability resulting from high voltage stability and Li-ion conductivity.
