Abstract

The present invention provides a potentiometer for mains-powered electrical circuits that can be used for both power control and reliable load disconnection. The targeted arrangement of multiple sliding contacts and conductive or insulating track sections creates a mechanically defined switching logic in which arcing is specifically kept away from the critical resistive sliding contact. This reduces wear, improves long-term stability, and allows for a compact, cost-effective design of the entire control system. Furthermore, integration into a phase-angle control circuit enables sensitive control of, for example, an electric motor or a heating load, without the need for additional components or separate mains switches.
