Abstract

A system and method for converting a direct current (DC) voltage from one voltage level to another comprises a power supply circuit (102) for receiving an input DC voltage from a source (104) and a load circuit (106) for supplying an output DC voltage to one or more loads (108). A first transformer (112) converts the input DC voltage to the output DC voltage with a specified step-up or step-down conversion ratio and has a predetermined power rating. A second transformer (114) with a lower power rating than the predetermined power rating is arranged in parallel with the first transformer (112) and converts the input DC voltage with the specified step-up or step-down conversion ratio.A control unit (116) selectively operates one of the transformers based on the load requirements compared to the predetermined rated power capacity of the first transformer (112).
