Abstract

A system for controlling the operation of a host vehicle includes at least one sensor configured to receive real-time environmental data from the host vehicle. The system includes a controller adapted to perform a driver assistance function and receive this environmental data. The controller is designed to determine a contact time between a first adjacent vehicle and the host vehicle when the first adjacent vehicle is traveling at or above a predefined minimum speed. The controller is designed to command the host vehicle to accelerate forward in a first lane when the contact time is less than a threshold time and the respective distance between the host vehicle and a second adjacent vehicle is at or above a predefined threshold distance.An overlay steering command is generated to move the host vehicle to an adjacent lane if the respective distance is less than the predefined threshold distance.
