Adaptive virtual exterior mirror system (10) for a vehicle, comprising: a fixed acrylic glass panel (24) comprising PMMA, which is mounted in the area of ​​an inner side window (14) of the vehicle in the window frame of a vehicle door, a transparent OLED display (12) which is mounted on the acrylic glass panel (24), a polymer-dispersed liquid crystal layer, PTLC (16), behind the OLED display (12), at least one exterior mirror camera (18) for capturing a rear area, an eye-tracking system (20) for capturing a driver's gaze direction, a control unit (22) which, based on the captured gaze direction and the camera images, controls the OLED display (12) in such a way, in particular in such a way that the display of a virtual exterior mirror only takes place in an area of ​​the side window (14) which corresponds to the position of an analog exterior mirror.
