Abstract

A processor is provided for ray tracing. The processor is configured to provide an acceleration structure that includes at least one branch node, determines rays with associated detail base and detail attenuation parameters, and traverses the acceleration structure using the generated rays. The branch node includes a link factor, a pointer to a low-detail acceleration structure, and a pointer to a high-detail acceleration structure. The processor is configured to determine a branch input value based on the detail base parameter, the detail attenuation parameter, and a distance value, and compares the branch input value with the branch factor to determine which acceleration structure with which detail level to traverse.
