Abstract

Method for detecting the condition of a road surface using a 3D camera of a vehicle, wherein at least one image of the environment in front of the vehicle is taken with the 3D camera, wherein height profiles (h) of the road surface are determined from the image data of the 3D camera along a plurality of lines (5) transversely (y) to the direction of travel (1) of the vehicle and the condition (2; 6; 7; 8) of the road surface is detected from the determined height profiles (h), characterized in that the condition (2; 6; 7; 8) of the road surface is detected by comparing the determined height profiles (h) with stored height profiles of known condition, wherein a condition classifier is pre-trained which thereby learns which detected height profiles correspond to which road surface conditions.
