Abstract

A system for managing food in a household, comprising: • an electronic terminal with an input unit, in particular a camera for optically capturing barcodes, • a processing unit, • a storage unit, and • an output unit, characterized in that the processing unit is configured to: • identify a foodstuff based on a captured barcode or on manual input and assign it to a name and / or a derived food category, • permanently store the captured barcode, if available, together with the associated information in the storage unit so that repeated identification is possible without further external querying, • process a best-before date of the foodstuff, • determine an additional shelf life based on the name and / or food category using an assignment rule stored in the storage unit.• to add this additional period to the best before date in order to calculate an extended shelf life, and • on the basis of this extended shelf life, to provide information on the expected edibility of the food via the dispensing unit.
