AI Technical Summary
Conventional thermoplastic polyurethanes used in automotive applications, particularly for high-temperature cable coatings, face challenges in combining good mechanical properties with high temperature stability and recyclability, while also avoiding the limitations of materials like ETFE and networked polyolefin compounds.
A thermoplastic polyurethane is developed by combining an isocyanate composition containing at least one polyisocyanate with a polyol composition and a diamine with a molecular weight between 50 g/mol and 700 g/mol, which is initially implemented with a thermoplastic polyester to form an amid, before being reacted with the isocyanate and polyol compositions.
The resulting thermoplastic polyurethane exhibits enhanced mechanical properties and high temperature resistance, making it suitable for demanding automotive applications such as cable coatings, while also potentially offering recyclability advantages.
Description
[0001] The present invention relates to a thermoplastic polyurethane obtainable or obtained by a process comprising reacting a thermoplastic polyester (PE-1) with a diamine (D1) to obtain a composition (Z1) comprising an amide (PA-1), and reacting the resulting composition (Z1) with an isocyanate composition (I1) comprising at least one polyisocyanate and a polyol composition (P1), wherein the diamine (D1) has a molecular weight in the range from 50 g / mol to 700 g / mol. The present invention further relates to a process for producing such a thermoplastic polyurethane and to molded articles comprising a thermoplastic polyurethane according to the invention.
[0002] Thermoplastic polyurethanes are widely known for their good mechanical properties, high abrasion resistance, and high elasticity. They are therefore widely used in a wide variety of applications.
[0003] US 2018 / 291141 A1 discloses a process for producing thermoplastic polyurethanes and the corresponding thermoplastic polyurethane in which a diamine is used as a chain extender.
[0004] Thermoplastic polyurethanes are also used in a variety of ways in the automotive sector. High thermal stability is required for certain applications, such as charging cables for hybrid and electric vehicles. The relevant standards for cables in automotive applications are LV 112 and ISO 6722, which classify the materials according to specific temperature classes.
[0005] For new applications, manufacturers often choose cables suitable for applications close to the engine with temperature class D up to 150°C. Examples include the engine cable harness or the transmission connection. Electric and hybrid vehicles place particularly high demands on the cable harness and cables, which are only partially comparable with conventional on-board electrical systems. Due to high voltages of up to 1000 V and correspondingly high currents, these cables must withstand significantly higher temperatures than their predecessors. The cables must withstand the standard winding test after 3000 hours of hot air aging at 150°C.
[0006] For temperature class D (up to 150 °C), ethylene tetrafluoroethylene copolymers (ETFE) are used, among others. In the event of a fire, corrosive gases are released when ETFE is used, which often limits the use of these materials.
[0007] Another material is special cross-linked polyolefin compounds. However, these cross-linked polyolefin compounds are very complex and expensive to produce due to the necessary subsequent cross-linking through irradiation or vulcanization, and they often reach their limits due to their chemical resistance and low mechanical strength. These cross-linked materials also have the disadvantage of not being recyclable and causing watertightness issues when molding connectors and grommets.
[0008] The now widely used LV 112 standard also introduces stricter requirements regarding hydrolysis resistance at high temperatures. While ISO 6722 requires service lives of 1,000 to 3,000 hours at 85 degrees Celsius and 85 percent relative humidity, LV 112 requires a service life of 3,000 hours.
[0009] The remaining requirements for cable sheathing are largely identical in both regulations and are now standard for the materials offered for this purpose. These include resistance to cold, media resistance, and inhibition of fungal growth, as well as compatibility with other materials in the cable harness, such as adhesive tapes, heat-shrink tubing, and connectors.
[0010] However, for many applications, there are no materials available that combine good mechanical properties with the specific requirements of automotive applications. Even many conventional thermoplastic polyurethanes degrade under these stresses.
[0011] One object underlying the present invention was therefore to provide thermoplastic polyurethanes which have good mechanical properties and high temperature stability.
[0012] According to the invention, this object is achieved by a thermoplastic polyurethane obtainable or obtained by a process comprising the reaction of an isocyanate composition (II) containing at least one polyisocyanate and a polyol composition (P1),
[0013] wherein at least one diamine (D1) having a molecular weight in the range from 50 g / mol to 700 g / mol is used and wherein the diamine D1 is reacted with a thermoplastic polyester (PE-1) to form an amide (PA-1) before the reaction with the isocyanate composition (I1) and the polyol composition (P1).
[0014] According to the invention, this object is thus also achieved by a thermoplastic polyurethane, obtainable or obtained by a process comprising the reaction of an isocyanate composition (II) containing at least one polyisocyanate and a polyol composition (P1), wherein at least one diamine (D1) having a molecular weight in the range from 50 g / mol to 700 g / mol is reacted with a thermoplastic polyester (PE-1) to form an amide (PA-1) before the reaction with the isocyanate composition (II) and the polyol composition (P1).
[0015] Accordingly, the present invention also relates to a thermoplastic polyurethane obtainable or obtained by a process comprising steps (i) and (ii) (i) reacting a thermoplastic polyester (PE-1) with a diamine (D1) to obtain a composition (Z1) containing an amide (PA-1), (ii) reacting the composition (Z1) obtained according to step (i) with an isocyanate composition (I1) containing at least one polyisocyanate and a polyol composition (P1), wherein the diamine (D1) has a molecular weight in the range of 50 g / mol to 700 g / mol.
[0016] According to an alternative embodiment, the present invention also relates to a thermoplastic polyurethane as described above, wherein the diamine (D1) is used as a chain extender.
[0017] Thus, according to a further embodiment, the present invention also relates to a thermoplastic polyurethane as described above, wherein the process comprises the reaction of components (a) to (c): (a) the isocyanate composition (II) containing at least one polyisocyanate, (b) the polyol composition (P1), and (c) the diamine (D1) as chain extender.
[0018] If the diamine (D1) is used as a chain extender, the process can be carried out under standard conditions. Butyl and Z is selected from the group consisting of CH 2 , CHCH 3 , C(CH 3 ) 2 , O and S. Accordingly, the present invention also relates to a thermoplastic polyurethane obtainable or obtained by a process comprising the reaction of an isocyanate composition (II) containing at least one polyisocyanate and a polyol composition (P1), wherein at least one diamine (D1) having a molecular weight in the range from 50 g / mol to 700 g / mol is used, selected from compounds of the general formula (I) or (II): wherein R1 and R2 are independently selected from the group consisting of O-CH 3 , CH 2 CH 3 , S-CH 3 , NH-CH 3 , N(CH 3 ) 2 and H , , or where a) X 1 = X 2 = Y 1 = Y 2 = H, b) X 1 = X 2 = Y 1 = Y 2 = CH 3 c) X 1 = X 2 = Y 1 = Y 2 = isopropyl d) X 1 = X 2 = Y 1 = Y 2 = C 2 H 5 , e) X 1 = X 2 = Y 1 = Y 2 = butyl f) X 1 = X 2 = Y 1 = Y 2 = tert. [0078] The following examples serve to illustrate the invention. EXAMPLES 1. Input materials
[0079] PC polyol: Polycarbonate polyol E1195A: Standard TPU (benchmark), Elastollan 1195 A, thermoplastic polyurethane based on polyether, available from BASF Polyurethanes 785A HPM: Standard HPM TPU (Benchmark), Elastollan 785 A HPM, thermoplastic polyurethane based on polyester, available from BASF Polyurethanes Ethacure 300 Dimethylthiotoluenediamine (E300) Ethacure 100 Diethyltoluenediamine (E100) 2. General manufacturing example:
[0080] 2.1 The synthesis is carried out by reactive extrusion in a self-cleaning twin-screw extruder, based on the process described in EP1419188B1. In the twin-screw extruder, with a screw length to screw diameter ratio of 48, residence times of at least 40 s, preferably greater than 60 s, are achieved. The polymer melt obtained after transamidation and subsequent chain formation is processed into granules by underwater or strand granulation.
[0081] 2.2 Various samples were investigated for their mechanical properties. Compositions containing thermoplastic polyurethanes and dimethylthiotoluenediamine or diethyltoluenediamine were prepared using a one-shot process or a prepolymer process.
[0082] In the one-shot process, all components (diisocyanate (a), polyol (b), chain extender (c), and catalyst (e)) were introduced into a first zone of the extruder. The temperature was set between 150°C and 230°C at 200 rpm. After mixing the components and reacting for at least 40 seconds, preferably at least 60 seconds, granules were obtained from the polymer melt by strand pelletizing or underwater pelletizing.
[0083] For the semi-prepolymer process, diisocyanates (a), polyol (b), chain extender (c), and catalyst (e) were initially added in a first zone of the extruder. After thorough mixing and pre-reaction of these feedstocks, additional chain extender was added in the third or fifth zone. After this reaction for at least 40 seconds, preferably at least 60 seconds, granules were obtained from the polymer melt by strand pelletizing or underwater pelletizing. 2.3 Conditions for aging
[0084] SI specimens were stored in a forced-air oven at the appropriate temperature for the specified time. After the heat treatment, they were removed and cooled to room temperature. Mechanical tests were performed on the treated specimens.
[0085] The aging study shows that the inventive thermoplastic polyurethanes with different hard segment contents, produced using dimethylthiotoluenediamine or diethyltoluenediamine, remained dimensionally stable and retained their flexibility after storage at 180°C, 190°C, and 200°C for 6 hours. Furthermore, they still exhibited more than 50% of their original elongation at break after storage at 150°C for 3000 hours. Thus, the materials meet the requirements of a T4 standard for automotive applications. 3. Examples
[0086] 3.1 The following examples were produced in a Coperion ZSK58 MC twin-screw extruder with a process length of 48D (12 barrels). The melt was discharged from the extruder via a gear pump. After melt filtration, the polymer melts were processed into granules by underwater pelletizing, which were then continuously dried in a heated fluidized bed at 60-90°C to a water content of less than 0.03%.
[0087] The polybutylene terephthalate, Ultradur B4500 from BASF SE, was metered into the first zone. After the PBT melted, the reagent for transamidation, e.g., Etacure 100, and, if required, a catalyst, were added in the third zone. After transamidation, the other reaction components, such as diisocyanate and polyols, were added in the fifth zone. Additional additives were added in zone 8. Melt discharge and underwater pelletizing took place at melt temperatures of 220–230°C.
[0088] The barrel temperatures for the feed zone (zone 1) are 150°C. Melting and transamidation (zones 2-5) occur at temperatures of 250-300°C. Polymer buildup in zones 6-12 occurs at barrel temperatures of 240-210°C. The screw speed is between 180 and 240 rpm. The throughput is in the range of 180-220 kg / h. 3.2 Compositions
