Abstract

A method of immunotherapy of a patient with a malignant tumor is described, comprising administering to the patient an antibody that inhibits signaling from the PD-1 / PD-L1 signaling pathway or a combination of such an antibody and an antibody to CTLA-4. The present invention also provides a method of immunotherapy of a patient with a malignant tumor, comprising selecting a patient who is a suitable candidate for immunotherapy based on an assessment that in an examined tissue sample from the patient the proportion of cells that express PD-L1 on the cell surface exceeds a predetermined threshold level, and administering an antibody to PD-1 to the selected subject. The present invention further provides rabbit monoclonal antibodies that specifically bind to a cell-surface expressed PD-L1 antigen in an FFPE tissue sample, and an automated IHC method for assessing cell surface expression in FFPE tissues using the provided antibodies to PD-L1.
