Abstract
Description
Devices and methods for wireless communication in a wireless networkTECHNICAL FIELD
[0001] The present disclosure relates to wireless communications. More specifically, the present disclosure relates to devices and methods for wireless communication in a wireless communication network.BACKGROUND
[0002] IEEE 802.11-based WLANs (also referred to as Wi-Fi networks) have become popular at an unprecedented rate. The 802.11 family of standards is constantly expanded by amendments and new generations of previous 802.11 standards to provide WLAN technology with new and improved technical features.
[0003] 802.11ax (also referred to as "Wi-Fi 6" ) has introduced a resource unit (RU) as a portion of the entire bandwidth (BW) that can be allocated to a specific station (STA) or group of STAs to support OFDMA transmissions. A set of valid RUs of different sizes has been defined in 802.11ax. Each RU comprises a set of consecutive tones.
[0004] 802.11be, the currently discussed next amendment of the 802.11 standard and also referred to as "Wi-Fi 7" , extends the set of valid allocations to Multiple RUs (MRUs) consisting of 2 or 3 RUs (as defined in 802.11ax) .
[0005] Both 802.11ax and 802.11be define trigger-based (TB) transmissions, where an access point (AP) solicits uplink (UL) transmission from one or more STAs and allocates each STA or each group of STA a specific RU / MRU. All the STAs indicated by the AP in a trigger frame should transmit immediately a TB physical layer protocol data unit (PPDU) using transmission parameters indicated by the AP. However, the AP may also indicate the STA to check channel availability by performing a clear channel assessment (CCA) within the allocated RU / MRU. If any one of the allocated channels is busy, the STA will refrain from transmitting the TB PPDU.
[0006] Consequently, when any one of the channels within the allocated RU is busy, the STA will lose the opportunity to transmit even if part of the channels are idle leading to an inefficient use of transmission resources.
[0007] SUMMARY
[0008] It is an objective to provide improved wireless devices for wireless communication in a wireless network, in particular an IEEE 802.11 based wireless communication network, i.e. a Wi-Fi network, as well as a corresponding method providing for a more efficient use of transmission resources.
[0009] The foregoing and other objectives are achieved by the subject matter of the independent claims. Further implementation forms are apparent from the dependent claims, the description and the figures.
[0010] According to a first aspect a non-access point, non-AP, station for OFDMA communication with an access point, AP, is provided. The non-AP station comprises a communication interface configured to receive a trigger frame from the AP, wherein the trigger frame comprises information about a target resource unit, RU, or multi resource unit, MRU, defining a plurality of channels within an allocated bandwidth, wherein the information about the target RU or MRU comprises an indication indicative of the target RU or MRU. The non-AP station further comprises a processing circuitry configured to select, in case at least one of the channels of the target RU or MRU is busy, an adjusted target RU or MRU within the allocated bandwidth excluding the at least one busy channel. The communication interface is further configured to transmit a response frame to the AP, wherein the response frame comprises an indication of up to 5 bits indicative of the adjusted target RU or MRU.
[0011] Thus, an improved wireless non-AP station for wireless communication in a wireless network, in particular an IEEE 802.11 based wireless communication network, i.e. a Wi-Fi network, is provided allowing for a more efficient use of transmission and signalling resources.
[0012] In a further possible implementation form, the indication indicative of the adjusted target RU or MRU comprises a bit sequence of 4 or 5 bits and the processing circuitry is configured to determine the bit sequence based on a look-up table comprising a plurality of candidate bit sequences, wherein the look-up table is stored in a memory of the non-AP station.
[0013] In a further possible implementation form, the plurality of candidate bit sequences are arranged in the look-up table in an order based on an order of a plurality of channel puncturing patterns.
[0014] In a further possible implementation form, the plurality of candidate bit sequences are arranged in an ascending order in the look-up table.
[0015] In a further possible implementation form, the processing circuitry is configured to select, in case at least one of the channels of the target RU or MRU is busy, an adjusted target RU or MRU within the allocated bandwidth including at least one anchor channel.
[0016] In a further possible implementation form, the at least one anchor channel is pre-defined or wherein the information about the target RU or MRU comprises the indication indicative of the target RU or MRU and an indication of the at least one anchor channel.
[0017] In a further possible implementation form, the processing circuitry is further configured to select instead of a target modulation and coding scheme, MCS, of a plurality of MCSs for the target RU or MRU a different MCS for the adjusted target RU or MRU and the response frame further comprises an indication indicative of the different MCS selected for the adjusted target RU or MRU.
[0018] In a further possible implementation form, each MCS of the plurality of MCSs is identified by a MCS index and the indication indicative of the different MCS selected for the adjusted target RU or MRU is indicative of the different MCS having a MCS index that is by one larger than a MCS index of the target MCS.
[0019] In a further possible implementation form, each MCS of the plurality of MCSs is identified by a MCS index and the indication indicative of the different MCS selected for the adjusted target RU or MRU is indicative of a MCS index of the different MCS within a range of MCS indexes defined by the trigger frame.

[0026] transmitting a response frame to the AP, wherein the response frame comprises an indication of up to 5 bits indicative of the adjusted target RU or MRU.
[0027] Thus, an improved method for operating a wireless non-AP station for wireless communication in a wireless network, in particular an IEEE 802.11 based wireless communication network, i.e. a Wi-Fi network, is provided allowing for a more efficient use of transmission and signalling resources.
[0028] The method according to the second aspect of the present disclosure can be performed by the non-AP station according to the first aspect of the present disclosure. Thus, further features of the method according to the second aspect of the present disclosure result directly from the functionality of the non-AP station according to the first aspect of the present disclosure as well as its different implementation forms described above and below.

[0092] TF Trigger Frame –in 802.11ax, the Trigger Frame was introduced as a means to trigger a non-AP STA or multiple non-AP STAs to transmit simultaneously and in a synchronized manner to the triggering AP
[0093] Figure 1a shows a diagram illustrating RUs for a bandwidth of 80 MHz as defined by the standard 802.11ax, while Figure 1b shows a diagram illustrating MRUs for a bandwidth of 160 MHz as defined by the standard 802.11be.
[0094] Figure 1c shows a schematic diagram illustrating transmission with RU adaptation in case of a busy channel, in particular a RU adaptation applied for a TB PPDU in case a portion of the assigned BW is not available. The main idea of RU adaptation is to allow the wireless device to use the available channels and transmit the TB PPDU using the available portions of the allocated BW.
[0095] As will be described in more detail below, the communication interface 123 of the non-AP station 120 shown in figure 1 is configured to receive a trigger frame from the AP 110, wherein the trigger frame comprises information about a target resource unit, RU, or multi resource unit, MRU, defining a plurality of channels within an allocated bandwidth, wherein the information about the target RU or MRU comprises an indication indicative of the target RU or MRU to be used by the non-AP station 120. The processing circuitry 121 of the non-AP station 120 is configured to select, in case at least one of the channels of the target RU or MRU is busy, an adjusted target RU or MRU within the allocated bandwidth excluding the at least one busy channel. Moreover, the communication interface 123 of the non-AP station 120 is further configured to transmit a response frame to the AP 110, wherein the response frame comprises an indication of up to 5 bits indicative of the adjusted target RU or MRU. In an embodiment, the indication indicative of the adjusted target RU or MRU comprises a bit sequence of 4 or 5 bits, wherein the processing circuitry 121 of the non-AP station 120 is configured to determine the bit sequence based on a look-up table comprising a plurality of candidate bit sequences and wherein the look-up table is stored in a memory 125 of the non-AP station 120. In the context of figures 3 to 6 further embodiments of this indication of up to 5 bits, in particular 4 or 5 bits, indicative of the adjusted target RU or MRU will be described in more detail below.
[0096] Complementary to the non-AP station 120, the processing circuitry 111 of the AP shown in figure 1 is configured to generate a trigger frame, wherein the trigger frame comprises information about a target resource unit, RU, or multi resource unit, MRU, defining a plurality of channels within an allocated bandwidth, wherein the information about the target RU or MRU comprises an indication indicative of the target RU or MRU to be used by the non-AP station (s) 120. The communication interface 113 of the AP is configured to transmit the trigger frame to the non-AP station (s) 120 and to receive, in response to transmitting the trigger frame, a response frame from the non-AP station (s) 120, wherein the response frame comprises an indication of up to 5 bits indicative of an adjusted target RU or MRU used by the non-AP station (s) 120. In the context of figures 3 to 6 different embodiments of this indication of up to 5 bits, in particular 4 or 5 bits, indicative of the adjusted target RU or MRU will be described in more detail below.
[0097] Figure 2 shows a table listing different flexibility modes or levels implemented by the non-AP station (s) 120 and the AP 110 according to an embodiment for wireless OFDMA communication with RU / MRU adaptation. Thus, according to embodiments disclosed herein, the RU / MRU adaptation implemented by the by the non-AP station (s) 120 and the AP 110 according to an embodiment may not only involve a RU / MRU adaptation but also an adjustment of other transmission parameters to an adapted RU / MRU size. According to an embodiment, in a first level only the RU / MRU may be adjusted by the non-AP station (s) 120 (the transmission power may be adjusted by the non-AP station (s) 120 to a new RU size to preserve the PSD) . In a second level the non-AP station (s) 120 according to an embodiment may further change adjust the modulation and coding scheme (MCS) and / or the number of spatial streams (referred to as Nss) of the adjusted target RU or MRU, where the allowed change is predefined or restricted to a certain range, such as by adjusting the MCS index by 1. In a third level the non-AP station (s) 120 according to an embodiment may update MCS / Nss to any other value, based on criteria indicated by the AP 110. In an embodiment, the trigger frame from the AP 110 may comprise an indication indicative of one or more transmission power constraints and the processing circuitry 121 of the non-AP station 120 may be configured to adjust a transmission power for the adjusted target RU or MRU based on the one or more transmission power constraints indicated in the trigger frame (TF) .
[0098] The standard 802.11be defines an indication of punctured channels within a U-SIG field, i.e. channels that are not available and, thus, are not used for transmission in a current PPDU. Figure 2a shows a table illustrating an example of this puncturing indication in the U-SIG field of a standardized PPDU. As will be described in more detail below, the indication for an adapted RU / MRU implemented by the non-AP station (s) 120 makes beneficial use of the puncturing indication scheme defined by 802.11be.
[0099] In the following several embodiments for indication signalling implemented by the non-AP station (s) 120 and the AP 110 for wireless communication with exemplary bandwidths of 80 and 160 MHz with RU / MRU adaptation will be described that are based on the following ideas and findings. Because of the larger bandwidth RU adaptation may be less relevant for an allocated BW of 320 MHz (i.e. less likely to be used for a TB PPDU for a single non-AP station 120 allocated with a bandwidth of 320 MHz) . Thus, the embodiments disclosed below define the number of bits required for an indication based on RU / MRU combinations for an allocated bandwidth smaller than 320 MHz. According to an embodiment, combinations of 320 MHz may be adjusted to fit this number of bits.
[0100] For an allocated bandwidth of 40 MHz there are 2 possible RU / MRU combinations. For an allocated bandwidth of 80 MHz there are 10 possible combinations, namely 4 MRUs (single hole of 20 MHz) , 4 RUs of 242 tones, 2 RUs of 484 tones. For an allocated bandwidth of 160 MHz there are 26 possible combinations, namely 12 MRUs (single hole of 20 / 40 MHz) , 8 RUs of 242 tones, 4 RUs of 484 tones, 2 RUs of 996 tones. The embodiments below allow to indicate a further option for any allocated bandwidth that no RU / MRU adaptation has occurred. Therefore, the embodiments disclosed below allow to indicate all possible RU / MRU combinations for the relevant bandwidths by up to 5 indication bits, as will be described in more detail in the following.
[0101] Figure 3 shows a table listing indication signalling implemented by the non-AP station (s) 120 and the AP 110 according to an embodiment for wireless communication with an exemplary bandwidth of 80 MHz with RU / MRU adaptation. In this embodiment, 4 bits may be used to identify all possible RU / MRU combinations. In the embodiment illustrated in figure 3 the RU / MRU adaptation indication implemented by the non-AP station (s) 120 and the AP 110 makes use of the indication of puncturing channels as defined in the 802.11be standard for MRUs combinations (as illustrated in figure 2a) . The possible RU combinations may be added as further rows of the table illustrated in figure 3, which may be implemented as a look-up table in the memory 125 of the non-AP station 120.
[0102] According to a further embodiment, the RU / MRU adaptation indication implemented by the non-AP station (s) 120 and the AP 110 may be based on a look-up table, where all the RU / MRU combinations are organized in ascending order. Figure 4 shows an example of such a look-up table implemented by the non-AP station (s) 120 and the AP 110 according to an embodiment for an exemplary bandwidth of 80 MHz and an adapted RU / MRU indication comprising 5 bits.
[0103] Figure 5 shows a table listing indication signalling implemented by the non-AP station (s) 120 and the AP 110 according to a further embodiment for wireless communication with a bandwidth of 160 MHz with RU / MRU adaptation with a limited RU size. The table illustrated in figure 5 may be implemented as a look-up table in the memory 125 of the non-AP station 120.
[0104] Figure 5a shows a table listing indication signalling implemented by the non-AP station (s) 120 and the AP 110 according to a further embodiment for wireless communication with a bandwidth of 160 MHz with RU / MRU adaptation. In this embodiment, 5 bits may be used to identify all possible RU / MRU combinations. In the embodiment illustrated in figure 5a the RU / MRU adaptation indication implemented by the non-AP station (s) 120 and the AP 110 makes use of the indication of puncturing channels as defined in the 802.11be standard for MRUs combinations (as illustrated in figure 2a) . In an embodiment the table shown in figure 5a may be implemented as a look-up table, for instance, in the memory 125 of the non-AP station 120.
[0105] As will be appreciated, for the bandwidth of 160 MHz 4 bits (for the embodiment of figure 5) or 5 bits (for the embodiment of figure 5a) may be used to identify all possible RU / MRU adaptations. Thus, in comparison to the 80 MHz embodiments with 4 bits illustrated in figures 3 and 4, in the case of a bandwidth of 160 MHz the number of necessary indication bits may be reduced by limiting the number of possible RU / MRU combinations in case of 160 MHz.
[0106] In an embodiment, the minimum size of a RU / MRU may be limited to 80 MHz in case of a PPDU bandwidth of 160 MHz. In this case, the number of possible RU / MRU combinations is 15 (for a BW < 160 MHz the same table as in figures 3 and 4 may be used) . Also for this bandwidth, either the punctured channel indication may be used (similar to figure 3) or a new table with ascending order may be used (similar to figure 4) . As will be appreciated, the table illustrated in figure 5 makes use of the punctured channel indication.
[0107] Figure 6 shows a table listing indication signalling implemented by the non-AP station (s) 120 and the AP 110 according to an embodiment for wireless communication with a bandwidth of 160 MHz with RU / MRU adaptation using anchor channels. The table illustrated in figure 6 may be implemented as a look-up table in the memory 125 of the non-AP station 120. As used herein, anchor channels are those channels (predefined or indicated by the AP 110) that need to be included within each TB PPDU. If an anchor channel is busy, the non-AP station (s) 120 will not transmit the TB PPDU (similar to current rule in 802.11be) .
[0108] One or more anchor channels may be defined by the AP 110 in different ways. In an embodiment, the AP 110 may be configured to define the one or more anchor channels based on a predefined rule defining, for instance, a specific 20 MHz channel within the allocated BW, such as the channel with the lowest or highest frequency range. In a further embodiment, the AP 110 may be configured to use a dynamic indication in the trigger frame (TF) . For instance, an index of the 20 MHz channel that is defined as the anchor channel for a specific allocation may be indicated within a User Specific Info field of the trigger frame (in an embodiment this field may comprise 3 bits) . In a further embodiment, the AP 110 may be configured to announce a static anchor allocation in a beacon frame or a probe (e.g. a bitmap of 16 bits) .
[0109] For the embodiment that the anchor channel (s) is announced by the AP 110 the number of possible adapted RU / MRU combinations is reduced. For example, for an allocated bandwidth of 80 MHz only a single RU of 242 / 484-tones is valid. Thus, in this case, 4 indication bits are sufficient. The table shown in figure 6 also includes all the MRU combinations to simplify the parsing of the table. Also for this embodiment, either the punctured channel indication may be used (similar to figure 3) or a new table with ascending order may be used (similar to figure 4) . As will be appreciated, the table illustrated in figure 6 makes use of the punctured channel indication.
[0110] As already described above, in addition to adapting the RU / MRU the non-AP station (s) 120 may be configured to adapt further transmission parameters, such as the modulation and coding scheme (MCS) , the number of spatial streams (Nss) and / or the transmission power used for the transmission to the AP 110.
[0111] In an embodiment, as already described above, the non-AP station (s) 120 may adapt the MCS by adapting the MCS index only by a value 1, i.e. to a MCS having a MCS that is by 1 larger (or smaller) than the original MCS. In an embodiment, the AP 110 may indicate this mode by a single bit of the trigger frame. In an embodiment, the non-AP station (s) 120 may indicate by a single bit whether the MCS has been adapted, such as ‘0’ = no change, ‘1’ = MCS has been increased.
[0112] In a further embodiment, the non-AP station (s) 120 may adapt the MCS by adapting the MCS index within a range of allowed MCS indexes defined by the AP 110. In an embodiment, the AP 110 may indicate this by means of 4 bits in the trigger frame indicating the range of allowed MCS indexes (in this embodiment 4 zero bits may indicate that no change is allowed) . Likewise, in an embodiment, the non-AP station 120 may explicitly indicate by means of 4 bits the adapted MCS index value.
[0113] In an embodiment, as already described above, the non-AP station (s) 120 may adapt the number of spatial streams Nss by adapting Nss only by a value 1. In an embodiment, the AP 110 may indicate this mode by a single bit of the trigger frame. In an embodiment, the non-AP station (s) 120 may indicate by a single bit whether Nss has been adapted, such as ‘0’ = no change, ‘1’ = Nss has been decreased.
[0114] In a further embodiment, the non-AP station (s) 120 may adapt Nss by adapting the number of spatial streams within a range of allowed Nss values defined by the AP 110. In an embodiment, the AP 110 may indicate this by means of 3 bits in the trigger frame indicating the range of allowed Nss values (in this embodiment 3 zero bits may indicate that no change is allowed) . Likewise, in an embodiment, the non-AP station 120 may explicitly indicate by means of 3 bits the adapted Nss value.
[0115] In a further embodiment, the AP 110 may be configured to indicate or define one or more further RU / MRU adaptation constraints in the trigger frame. In an embodiment, the one or more further RU / MRU adaptation constraints may comprise one or more of the following: a maximum RU size change, e.g. the size of the adapted RU cannot be smaller than half or a quarter of the size of the original RU; an allow total transmission power change, e.g. the AP 110 may indicate a maximum allowed total power change in dB; an allowed maximum PSD change, e.g. the AP 110 may indicate the maximum allowed PSD change in dB.
[0116] As already mentioned above, these further RU / MRU adaptation constraints may be provided in the trigger frame generated by the AP 110. In an embodiment, the AP 110 may be configured to use a standardized EHT variant trigger frame with an extended Trigger Dependent User Info field extended by 1-2 octets. In a further embodiment, the AP 110 may be configured to provide the further RU / MRU adaptation constraints within the reserved bits of the Common Info Field of the standardized trigger frame (same constraints for all the non-AP stations 120) . In a further embodiment, the AP 110 may be configured to provide the further RU / MRU adaptation constraints within a Special User Info field of the trigger frame dedicated to RU adaptation (same constraints for all the non-AP stations 120) .
[0117] The 802.11 framework of standards defines a list of parameters that need to be provided by the PHY layer to the MAC layer in the wireless receiver, e.g. the AP 110. This list of parameters is called an RX_VECTOR. Each parameter has a dedicated field and each field has two main properties. First this field of the received PPDU defines whether it should be included in the RX_VECTOR, indicated in 802.11be as Y (yes) or N (no) . Secondly, this field defines whether it comprises a single value per PPDU or multiple values (MU) , one per non-AP station (indicated by Y for single value and MU for multiple values) .
[0118] Thus, in an embodiment, the processing circuitry 111 of the AP 110 is configured to implement a PHY processing layer and a MAC processing layer, wherein the PHY processing layer is configured to forward at least a portion of the information contained within the response frame to the MAC processing layer, as defined by the RX_VECTOR. In an embodiment, the PHY processing layer is configured to forward information about the adjusted target RU or MRU to the MAC processing layer. In an embodiment, the PHY processing layer is configured to forward information about an adjusted number of spatial streams of the adjusted target RU or MRU to the MAC processing layer.
[0119] To this end, in an embodiment illustrated in figure 6a, the standardized RU_ALLOCATION field description may be changed from N to MU. In a further embodiment illustrated in figure 7 a new field may be provided, which may comprise the following subfields: Parameter, Condition, Value, TX_VECTOR, and RX_VECTOR. In a further embodiment illustrated in figure 7a, the Nss field may be changed from N to MU.
[0120] As will be appreciated, embodiments disclosed herein provide a scheme for indicating an adapted RU / MRU, where the number of bits used for the indications is optimized with respect to all the available RU / MRU combinations. As described above, anchor channels may be defined that are indicated as mandatory for transmission. In the prior art there are no predefined anchor channels that need to be used for transmission, which means that the AP 110 cannot predict where the signal will be transmitted. Thus, without anchor channels the AP 110 would need to search and check every channel within the allocated BW to determine which channels are used. This may significantly increase implementation complexity. However, according to embodiments disclosed herein, due to the set of anchor channels that need to be part of the transmission regardless of the selected adapted RU / MRU, the requirements for the AP 110 may be relaxed. According to embodiments disclosed herein both the MAC and PHY layer of the AP 110 are aware of all the transmission parameters, which may be advantageously used for further transmissions.
