System and method for image registration of ultrasound image data

Abstract

A system and a computer-implemented method for image registration of ultrasound image data is provided. The method for image registration of ultrasound image data comprises a) receiving first ultrasound image data of a subject; b) performing, using a first registration method, a first image registration of the first ultrasound image data with three-dimensional, particularly ultrasound or CT or MRI, image data of a subject, the three-dimensional image data acquired prior to the first ultrasound image data; c) receiving second ultrasound image data of the subject, the second ultrasound image data acquired after the first ultrasound image data; and d) performing, using a second registration method, a second image registration of the second ultrasound image data with the three-dimensional image data, so as to provide an updated image registration, wherein the first registration method has higher registration accuracy than the second registration method.
