AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Current methods for producing doped lithiated solid-state electrolyte materials, such as doped lithium lanthanum zirconium oxides, are energy-intensive and not scalable, requiring extensive high-temperature heating and involving processes like ball milling and solvent removal.

Method used

A method involving benign aqueous precipitation chemistry, where a lithium species is contacted with a solid comprising lanthanum, zirconium, and dopant species, forming a precipitate that is then calcined to produce the doped lithiated solid-state electrolyte material, potentially at lower temperatures.

Benefits of technology

This method reduces energy consumption, is more scalable, and generates minimal harmful waste, while effectively producing doped lithiated solid-state electrolyte materials with improved properties.

Abstract

Provided herein is a method of making a doped lithium lanthanum zirconium oxide. The method comprises contacting an aqueous solution comprising lithium ions with a solid comprising lanthanum, zirconium and one or more dopant species for incorporation into the doped lithium lanthanum zirconium oxide; forming a precipitate comprising lithium; and calcining the precipitate comprising lithium to form the doped lithium lanthanum zirconium oxide. Also provided are related methods, products, starting materials and intermediates.
