AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Existing slurry polymerization processes for ethylene polymers face challenges with heat exchanger fouling, inefficient cleaning methods, and labor-intensive maintenance procedures, particularly during shutdowns and restarts.

Method used

A process for slurry polymerization that allows for maintenance of external reactor system components without emptying the polymerization reactor, involving steps such as closing reactor inlets, cooling, stopping agitators, and stopping circulation loop pumps, enabling prolonged shutdowns without product loss.

Benefits of technology

This approach enables efficient maintenance of external reactor system components during shutdowns, reducing labor and time requirements, and preventing product loss by maintaining the reactor slurry within the reactor.

Abstract

A slurry polymerization process for the preparation of polyethylene in a polymerization reactor at a temperature from 40°C to 150°C and a pressure from 0.1 MPa to 20 MPa to obtain an ethylene-based polymer, wherein the polymerization occurs in a polymerization reactor at least in the presence of a catalyst, ethylene and diluent in a reactor slurry, wherein the process comprises a shut-down phase in which the at least one reactor inlet is closed, the reactor is cooled down to a predetermined temperature threshold, the agitator is stopped letting the reactor slurry settle down to the bottom of the internal reactor volume, the active cooling of the reactor and heat exchanger is stopped and the circulation loop pump is stopped.
